Fly-in fishing at Meta Lake Lodge
Tumblr media
Last week I went fishing in Ontario for four nights at the Meta Lake Lodge and Outpost Camps. We flew in from Nakina, Ontario on Tuesday and flew back out on Saturday.
The fishing was great. Everything we tried (minnows, spinners, plugs, and spoons) was successful. We caught lots of fish every day and enjoyed a great walleye dinner on Wednesday night, taken from our catch that day.
I caught the biggest pike of my fishing career, trolling a spoon down the middle of the lake. The walleye were plentiful, and I even caught some nice ones fishing off the dock after supper.
The accommodations and food were outstanding. If you've ever contemplated a fly-in trip, this location is definitely worth considering.

After Inheriting Ancestral Land, These Black Families Are Defying The Odds To Keep It
A street sign on a dirt road leading up to a large plot of land in Nakina, North Carolina, lets you know you’re traveling down Roland Smith Lane. On that land sits a large white house — the only house standing on the 60-acre plot — that has become a vacation home for several generations of the Smith family to gather at.
The Smiths say they have done everything right to hold on to their land — and they have no intention of selling. Still, Evelyn S. Booker, who inherited the land from their father, says she and her seven siblings receive letters and texts weekly from developers with offers to buy.
“We’ve established that if anyone wants to sell their property, they will do so to a sibling and not an outsider,” Booker said.
By 1910, Black Americans like Smith’s ancestors had acquired a cumulative 16 million acres of rural land, according to the American Economic Association. But over the century that followed, 90% of that land was lost because of threats, violent force or systematic rejection from programs offered to white landowners to help keep land through economic hardships like the Great Depression.
With distrust of local governments, which had been charged with regulating property ownership in Southern states hostile to Black equality, and legal systems that had shut out Black families, many took informal routes to pass down ownership. Attorneys and others who work to help landowners gain clear title to their land say that for decades, countless Black property owners simply passed their land on to heirs through word of mouth. But instead of guaranteeing generational wealth, the lack of clear ownership on paper has created headaches and, at worst, opened families up to losing their land in the end.
Those vulnerabilities create a perfect storm for what’s known as an heirs’ property hunter.
Today, some of the siblings earn money from the timber on their land, and the entire family rents some of the land to local farmers. -(source: nbc news)

"SAVE THREE FLIERS, PLANE FROM NORTHERN MUSKEG," Toronto Star. May 14, 1943. Page 2. ---- Indians Made 150 Trips to Salvage Machine Forced Down on Lake ---- BRIDGE OF TREES ---- "Our first consideration was to save the lives of the men, and then, If possible, salvage the valuable parts of the plane." Hon, Norman Hipel said today. He was describing the rescue of three R.C.A.F. men and the salvage of their Avro Anson bomber from the muskeg of northwestern Ontario by his staff of the provincial air service.
The airmen, lost during a flight from Nakina to Armstrong, made an emergency landing on one of the countless lakes which dot the northwestern section of the province. They were there for three days before being found by Pilot A. C. MacMillan and Observer C. Pike.
Their rescue and the salvaging of the plane called for all the ingenuity at the command of the air service personnel at Geraldton. W. U. Fiskar, acting district forester, supervised the operations.
"The men were pretty hungry when we got to them," he reported. "One of the crew had attempted to get out but sank out of sight when he stepped from the wing and was rescued with difficulty by his companions.
"MacMillan and Pike, who had landed on a lake a mile away from the spot where the big bomber was bogged down, made their way to where the crew had reached shore and fed them. Then they took them aboard the forestry plane."
At first R.C.A.F. officials believed it would be impossible to salvage the plane because of the "bottomless" muskeg and the inaccessibility of the spot.
A 200-foot spruce carpet was laid from the store. This carpet consisted of small trees and limbs to form a foundation and then bigger saplings for a surface. It was strong enough to bear a ton weight or more."
"There was very little water in the lake," Fiskar continued. "Not enough to row a boat but to attempt to walk on the muck and vegetation meant certain death."
After the parts were dismantled the Indians carried them to the forestry plane, a mile away. The Indians made some 150 trips. Image caption:
DAMAGED AND SUNK deep in the muskeg of Northern Ontario, this R.C.A.F. plane was found by a searching plane of the Ontario Air Service. It had been. missing three days. Its crew of three was rescued.
A SALVAGE JOB followed the rescue. With the aid of a winch and cable flown from Geraldton, the plane was drawn ashore and stripped of $50,000 worth of equipment. Indians helped, carrying salvaged parts on "stretchers" over the trail to planes landed as near as possible.

Bedrest
Last night, dinugo me @ 6th week of pregnancy. I cried so much.
Nakina Ate Kath pa man din kami and after a while dinugo me, sumakit puson. Tinawagan ni Lovey si Dra. Anna and she advised that I should be on strict bed rest until Tuesday. And if spotting doesn’t stop, magkakaron kami ng ultrasound sa Tuesday.
We are praying that the babies are okay. Healthy and doing great. And I believe God heard all my cries and prayers. But His will be done, not mine.
I know that God knows the desires of my heart. Of our hearts. I’m really thankful that He gave me a husband who can help me through this. Who is considerate and loves me super
Thank You, Lord.

This is my home.  Northern Ontario.  A primal, mysterious and magical land of maternal beauty.  An ancient feminine spirit can be felt in these parts.  Her wrath can be witnessed in the rise and fall of Lake Superior’s frothing white mountains.  Her kindness, when she weaves herself a blanket of dancing white stars on a cloudless summers day.  It’s a place where artists come to soak in her spirit and attempt to capture the essence of this ancient force.
It’s the place where Anishnaabe folklore claims the gods split Turtle Island and created all forms of life.  It’s the place where The Anishnaabe have suffered in silence for generations at the hands of the Canadian government.  It’s a place where people are dying everyday due to extreme racism.  It’s a place where the first peoples are now reclaiming their ancient ways.  It’s a place where a cultural war is beginning.  It’s a place that will be home to momentous spiritual shift that will change the way Canadian society operates.
The North has rested for a long time but she’s giving her children the strength to rise again.  She’s ready to put up a fight.

“Bolshie To Prison,” Daily British Whig (Kingston). March 2, 1920. Page 04. ---- ‘I think your gentle Bolshevik had better travel towards Kingston,’ said Justice Logie to C. J. F. Collier in Chambers at Osgoode Toronto. ‘Technically your man may escape, but upon the evidence he does not appear to be a very desirable citizen.’ Joseph Wolkow, Frazier, Algoma on the G. T. P. R., had threatened to shoot the first policeman he saw and as a Bolshevik would do as he liked. Thereupon, H. Munro, justice of the peace at Grant, despatched Wolkow to Kingston for two years. Mr. Collier moved to hold Wolkow in Northern Ontario until his case was disposed of, but Justice Logie thought otherwise.
