Heyooo ☺️ Ich werde für Harrys Konzert in Wien sein und hab gleich noch einige Tage in Wien für Stadtferien angehängt :)

Hast du irgendwelche (Insider-)Tipps, was ich tun könnte? Z.B. Cafés oder Restaurants, oder Museen, die du magst (und es darf ruhig auch ein wenig ausserhalb der Stadt sein). Ich war vor einigen Jahren schon mal in Wien und hab rein theoretisch den ganzen hardcore Touristenkram bereits gesehen, aber falls du trotzdem irgendwelche „touristischen“ Tipps hast, sehe ich mir die natürlich auch gerne an :D

Cafes/ Restaurants: Siebenstern, Disco Volante, Liebling, Europa, Erich/ Ulrich, Propeller, Tata 7, Budapest Bistro, Swing Kitchen (bestes veganes Fastfood der Welt trust me), Edison, Budapest Bagel, Neni am Naschmarkt (Naschmarkt generell 10/10 da findest du immer irgendwas zu essen, auf das du Bock hast), Cafe Frida (auch generell Yppenplatz findet man auch immer was), Palmenhaus (pricey aber fancy), Veganista für tiptop Eis

Museen kann ich immer das naturhistorische Museum, MUMOK und Albertina empfehlen, generell is es ne gute Route wenn man zum Beispiel am Museumsquartier startet und dann bis zur spanisches Hofreitschule durchgeht, da nimmt man viele Sehenswürdigkeiten mit und das is ein guter Spaziergang. Sonst noch Burggarten oder auf die Gloriette raus (in Schönbrunn rein muss man echt nicht, das lohnt sich nicht) und wir haben auch einen echt schönen botanischen Garten am Belvedere, am Burggarten ist auch das Schmetterlingshaus, das ich mega süss finde. Wenn das Wetter gut is kannst du gut an die alte Donau (dort kann man auch baden) oder auf den Donaukanal, dort is es einfach relativ chillig zum sitzen und was trinken. Prater is auch cool, selbst wenn man mit nichts fahren will is es gut zum einfach mal durchgehen und anschauen.

Ich würde halt alle so mega touri mäßigen Restaurants und Cafes wie Central oder Sacher auslassen, das lohnt sich meiner Meinung nach wirklich null.

Week 4 in Prague (With a Viennese Interlude): Tour Guide Tales and Austrian Adventures

This week, my Prague narrative took an intriguing twist, blending the roles of a tourist and a tour guide, as I ventured to Vienna for a weekend jaunt and returned to play host to friends from back home. The experience was a delightful mix of rediscovering Prague through fresh eyes and indulging in the imperial charm of Vienna.

Vienna: A Weekend of Wiener Schnitzel and Waltzes Vienna greeted us with its stately architecture and cafes that make you feel underdressed. The city is a living museum, where every street corner boasts a story, and the coffee houses insist you understand the art of leisure. If you think Prague has crazy villas and museums, Vienna is that but 20x. We wandered through the MuseumsQuartier, marveled at the Schönbrunn Palace, and I developed a newfound respect for the term "Kaffeehauskultur" (coffee house culture) as we embraced the local tradition of spending hours in a café, a slice of Sachertorte in one hand and an Einspänner coffee in the other. At night, we went to Travel Shack, a hub for all tourists and foreigners with some crazy drink options- a must in my opinion. After that, we went to Prater Dome, probably the most fun club I’ve been to in all of Europe so far. Drinks were by far the cheapest we’ve seen them and let’s just say, we got there when the subway closed for the night, and left when the people were taking the morning train back to work.

Tip for Vienna: Dive into the café culture with gusto. Each coffee house is a universe unto itself, offering a unique glimpse into Vienna's soul. ALSO, must try restaurants: Ulrich and Erich (amazing brunch/lunch food- best french toast I have ever had), Neni Am Naschmarkt (Middle Eastern), and Mochi (Japanese).

As their guide, I was tasked with unveiling the layers of Prague, from the sprawling vistas atop Petřín Hill to the solemn beauty of the Vyšehrad Cemetery. ALSO, take your friends to the Dubliner. It probably has the best vibe out of any bar I have been to in Prague with the live music and the whole bar singing along. They’ll absolutely love it.

Cultural Exchange: Sharing Traditions and Creating Memories Playing host wasn't just about showing off Prague's sights; it was a cultural exchange. I introduced my friends to the joys of Czech cuisine, from the heartiness of goulash to the sublime simplicity of a perfectly baked trdelník. In return, we shared stories of home, reminiscing and creating new memories in this city that was becoming more familiar by the day.

Culinary Tip: In both Vienna and Prague, seek out the local markets. They're treasure troves of authentic flavors and a window into the daily lives of the city's residents.

The Joy of Reconnection: Bridging Home and Abroad Having friends visit served as a poignant reminder of the connections that endure, regardless of distance. It was a blend of my worlds—bringing pieces of home into my new life in Prague. The experience was a reminder that while I'm here to immerse myself in a new culture, my roots remain a vital part of who I am. The presence of friends from home in Prague was a bridge between my life back home and present, which felt great as I got both comfort and excitement equally.

Wir blicken, wohl vom obersten Stockwerk des Hauses an der Operngasse 7 (heute: Café Museum) aus Richtung Naschmarkt.

Der Wienfluss war zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme bereits eingewölbt, ein Teil des Naschmarkts bestand noch beim Freihaus an der Wiedner Hauptstraße. Heute befindet sich dort ein Teil der TU Wien inkl. der Bibliothek mit der markanten Eulenskulptur.

There’s this Italian restaurant at the Naschmarkt I loved. The National Bibliothek us a MUST HAVE, Belvedere was beautiful and you really have to get some nice cake and coffee (or something like that) in a café. The Karlskirche was also very impressive, same goes for the Heldenplatz. Friends told me that the Naturhistorisches Museum was cool and the Burgtheater was MARVELLOUS— I think that were my fav things to see/do :))

Jours 83 et 84

Premier réveil autrichien tranquille. On prend la route dans la région viticole. On découvre une importante région productrice de betteraves sucrières mais aussi de potirons, ceux ci étant alignés en rangs dans les champs.Nous nous posons dans un restaurant de campagne très typique pour goûter au fameux schnitzel accompagnés de frites. Dans l'après midi, nous nous rendons au bord du Danube dans la ville de Tull an der Donau où j'en profite pour me faire couper les cheveux. Nous faisons quelques boutiques et nous promenons le long du second plus grand fleuve d'Europe. Pour la nuit, nous nous calons à côté de la gare de Kritzendorf.

Le jour 84, nous prenons le train pour nous rendre dans la capitale autrichienne. Nous commençons la visite par la découverte de l'hôtel de ville et du parlement. Bien que magnifiques, tous ces bâtiments sont en travaux en ce moment. Nous continuons en direction du sud pour arriver au niveau du museum quarter et nous nous calons au marché Naschmarkt pour déjeuner. En début d'apres midi, on découvre l'opéra de Vienne puis on va dans un café pour un capuccino avec gâteaux 🍰 autrichiens. On va ensuite au palais du Belvédère et on va voir le village Hundertwasser avec ses immeubles façons Gaudi à Barcelone. On se rend dans la vieille ville où l'on admire la cathédrale Saint Etienne. Enfin, on se pose boire un coup dans un café et on finit par dîner dans un resto italien. Retour en train le soir jusqu'au van après une journée riche et une super découverte d'une capitale vraiment somptueuse ou la densité des choses à voir nous rappelle Paris; Vienne mérite sa réputation.

Wien Tag 5

Salut zusammen,

heute war der Tag der Abreise. Wer sich ausgedacht hat, dass man gegen 10Uhr auschecken muss, den möchte ich auch mal am Abend besuchen. Mit Sack und Pack machte ich mich auf den Weg zunächst ein paar kleine ausgewählte Läden ansteuernd. Dabei verirrte ich mich immer mehr in den Bezirk Neubau, der mit seinen vielen kleinen süßen Läden genau das richtige für mich war. Dabei war das Ziel doch nur ein Paar Schuhe zu kaufen. Erreicht wurde es, natürlich in einem ganz anderen Laden als geplant, aber hej, alle hatten Spaß. So machte ich mich auf neuen Sohlen auf zum letzten Programmpunkt auf der Liste. Im Museumsquartier gab es eine Ausstellung namens "Critical Care – Architecture for a broken planet“ und die sollte mich nun zwei Stunden beschäftigen. Es wurden Projekte vorgestellt bei denen die Architekten nachhaltig Vorhandenes umfunktionierten, Zerstörtes klüger wieder aufbauten und Vergessenes wieder zugänglich machten. Alles in allem eine sehr empfehlenswerte Ausstellung.

Und so beendete ich meinen Aufenthalt in Wien, wie ich ihn begonnen hatte. Auf dem Naschmarkt, diesmal setzte ich mich auch in eins der vielen Restaurants und beobachtete den Trubel.

Viel hab ich gesehen in Wien und vieles musste ich auf ein nächstes Mal verschieben. Wien ist groß, Wien ist klassisch, Wien ist modern und vor allem ist Wien offen. Steht man mal etwas verloren in der Gegend herum, weil man sich erstmal mit sich einigen muss, aber auch durch aufkommenden Hunger gar nicht mehr wirklich weiß, was man überhaupt will, kommt sicherlich bald eine liebe Oma auf euch zu und empfiehlt euch das nächstgelegene Café, fragt, ob man denn danach weiß, wo man hinwill und dass man ja sonst auch einfach an der Info fragen kann. Also einfach immer freundlich gucken und ihr bekommt bestimmt ein Lächeln zurück. Für mich geht es jetzt quer durch Österreich weiter nach Innsbruck. Dort ist das Programm „Wandern&Entspannen“ angesagt. Ich melde mich, falls ich vom Berg wieder hinunter komme. ;)

non-traditional café one: vollpension

After reviewing my last post, I posed the question to myself: is it possible for a modern establishment to create the intimacy of place that a, for lack of a better term,‘mom and pop shop’ can?

To complement Café Hawelka in this question I chose Vollpension. Vollpension, located near the Naschmarkt, is a revolutionary café that invites in retired Omas and Opas to bake for a few hours a week. They help out behind the counter, selling their wares, and get to get out of the house and meet people. In this way, I found that it forges the ‘human connection’ that is so important to Café Hawelka’s history.

While the demographics here are a bit different, there is a younger crowd with a more diverse spread of locals and tourists, the style is oddly similar. The retro decor of Café Hawelka is well worn, a staple of its nostalgia, while the 60s and 70s furniture at Vollpension is mostly flea market finds that have been paired with mismatched dishes and silverware. The space they create feels like someone’s living room. This is similar to Café Hawelka, however it feels much more intentional here. Café Hawelka maintains its effortless, shabby chic aesthetic due to actual wear and tear.

Although Vollpension is in a league of its own when it comes to Vienna’s establishments, I was inspired to compare it to Café Hawelka due to the parallels I found between the two. Perhaps Vollpension is the modern attempt at creating Café Hawelka’s rich sense of place, but there is something about the consistency of the two owners sitting day in and day out at the front of Café Hawelka that cannot be easily replicated in any modern establishment, even one that emphasizes human interaction with their business model.

Zero waste Vídeň

V zimě 2018 jsem se na tři měsíce přestěhovala do Vídně, abych si tam jako stážistka české Stálé mise vyzkoušela trošku diplomacie. A okusila jsem tam samozřejmě i kousek vídeňské zero waste scény.

V rámci stáže jsem pracovala na sekci pro OBSE – Organizaci pro bezpečnost a spolupráci v Evropě (ta dělá spoustu věcí hlavně na Balkáně a ve Střední Asii, ale teď nejvíce v rámci konfliktu na východě Ukrajiny). Nejvíce pracovního času jsem trávila přímo v centru Vídně v palácovém komplexu Hofburgu, kde OBSE sídlí. I tam se mi zero waste připomínalo při každém zasedání. Nikdy se totiž na stolech neobjevily petky. Místo nich se servírovala voda pěkně ve skleněných vratných sklenicích. Nosila jsem si s sebou čaj v termohrnku a nabízenou vodu ráda využila.

Bezobalové obchody

První dva měsíce jsem žila v domnění, že je ve Vídni jediný bezobaláč. Němčinu moc neovládám, a tak se mi podařil vygooglit jen Lunzerns nedaleko Prátru. Což bylo přesně na druhé straně města, než jsem bydlela. Takže jsem si tam občas dělala sobotní výlety. Vzala jsem si knížku, sedla do metra, skoro hodinu si četla, nakoupila si, a to samé zase při cestě zpět. V březnu jsem narazila na stránku, která mi prozradila, že bezobalových obchodů je ve Vídni mnohem více a také, že některé mám výrazně blíže. V žádném případě si ale netroufám tvrdit, že jsem našla všechny.

Do dvou menších místností se vejde nejen bezobalový obchod, prodej čerstvé zeleniny, miniart galerie, kavárna a prostor na kreativní dílny. Prodávají jak potraviny (standardní výběr včetně těstovin a čerstvého pečiva), tak drogerii (například prášek na mytí zubů a nebalené a nebělené toaletní papíry), a také sklenice, lahve a další zero waste pomůcky. Mají také slušný výběr různých nápojů ve skleněných lahvích, hlavně džusy, vína a pivo.

Já jsem si tu na chvíli sedla k práci, dala jsem si Fritz-limo a skvělý makový koláč, který naservírovali na dřevěném talíři. Hodně hipster, koneckonců jako celý obchod. Přestože vídeňské bezobaláče jsou hipster tak nějak celkově, tento je nejvíc.

Prostorná prodejna a bistro staví na tom, že mají potraviny bio, lokální a bez obalů. Prodávají chutné polévky (2,5–4 eur), jídlo dne (cca 7 eur), sendviče (cca 4 eura) a také kávu a čaj. Na Vídeň jsou v bistru poměrně dobré ceny. Některá jídla mají i ve veganské variantě.

Mají zajímavě zpracovaný prodej stáčených výrobků a celkově hezký design interiéru. Uprostřed prodejny je čerstvá zelenina, naproti vstupu pultový prodej pečiva a chlazených potravin (sýry, olivy atp.). Výběr je tu neskutečně široký, nadstandardně co se týče koření, čajů a sladkostí. Výběr doplňují potraviny ve sklenicích a základní kosmetika a drogerie.

Obchod leží za rohem od známé Mariahilfer Straße, kterou stojí za to si projít. Je to široký bulvár plný obchodů rychlé módy, které budete chtít nejspíše minout. Najdete mezi nimi však několik pekáren, kostelů a na konci i celou MuseumsQuartier. Zde stojí za návštěvu sbírky Schieleho a Klimta v Muzeu Leopoldových, stejně tak jako MUMOK (muzeum moderního umění). S dětmi zajděte do ZOOM Kindermuseum.

Obchod leží nedaleko od Prátru a mají v něm tak nějak všechno. Standardní výběr bezobalových potravin, včetně pečiva (chleba, linecké, cookies) a docela velkého výběru chlazených sýrů a dalších mléčných výrobků (mléko, jogurty). Spoustu džusů, vín a piv ve skle a dost stáčených olejů. I přes zimu měli dobrý výběr biozeleniny a ovoce (místní kořenová zelenina, brambory, zelí, dýně a jablka, další z dovozu).

Z kosmetiky a drogerie mají od všeho po pár kusech (stáčené čistící prostředky, mýdla, dřevěné hřebeny, bambusové kartáčky atd). Nadstandardní a moc zajímavý je tu výběr různých zero waste pomůcek (včetně ručního bidetu – na poslední fotce z tohoto obchodu). Kdyby vám to nestačilo, tak vám tu připraví i kávu a v sobotu do 15. hodiny i snídani, se kterou si můžete sednou ke stolečkům před prodejnou.

Naprosto kouzelná bezobalová prodejna se základními surovinami a zero waste pomůckami. To, co ztrácí na výběru, více než dohání na atmosféře. V ní se odráží přístup a nadšení, které do tohoto místa vkládají jeho zakladatelky sestry Christiane Wenighofer-Wanitsová a Stephanie Wanitsová. Dbají na to, aby všechno v obchodě bylo co nejvíce místní a sezónní, vše bio a všichni dodavatelé dostali férově zaplaceno. Já jsem si Warenhandlung zamilovala.

Není to jen klasický bezobaláč, ostatně jak je ve Vídni běžné, ale také pekárna a kavárna. Ze všech vídeňských bezobalových prodejen má asi nejvíce míst k sezení a taky nejpříjemnější atmosféru. Já jsem si s sebou vzala knížku, dala si kávu a pečivo se sýrem. Dostala jsem ho i s plátěným ubrouskem. A to jsem pak ještě později zahlédla, že jídlo chystají pěkně zero waste a místo jednorázových rukavic si myjí ruce. Celkově to prostě jen dotváří ten příjemný dojem poctivosti, která nikam nespěchá. Slow food jak vyšité.

Unverschwendet není bezobalový obchod, ale se zero waste má mnoho společného. Sourozenci Cornelia a Andreas Diesenreiterovi si založili byznys, který vykupuje neprodejnou zeleninu a ovoce (kvůli vzhledu i přebytkům) a vaří z nich luxusní marmelády, čatní, sirupy, marinády, kompoty, hořčice, no prostě cokoli, co si zrovna vymyslí. A vymýšlí to v opravdu hodně zajímavých a lákavých kombinacích.

Jejich prodejna stojí na jednom z menších vídeňských trhů Schwendermarkt. Slouží zároveň i jako kancelář a vzadu se skrývá malá profesionální kuchyň, ve které se všechny ty dobroty tvoří. Mají vtipný vizuál, kterým se snaží veřejnost upozornit na problém plýtvání ovocem a zeleninou a také jím ukazují možnosti, jak plýtvání předcházet. S Cornelií jsem se potkala osobně a udělala s ní povzbuzující rozhovor, tak třeba jej i jednou zpracuju…

Trhy

Trhů je ve Vídni hodně. Pokud tam nejste v zimě. Před Vánoci si teda můžete samozřejmě užít vánoční trhy, ale v lednu „tržně“ ve Vídni žijí hlavně stálé tržnice. Farmářské trhy jsou většinou otevřené jen v pátek odpoledne a v sobotu dopoledne. Já jsem žádný nenavštívila a z celotýdenních tržnic jsem zavítala jen na dvě.

Meidlinger Markt

Mnohem menší a méně turistický trh v jedné z chudších vídeňských čtvrtí jsem si oblíbila více než slavný Naschmarkt. Zavedla mne na něj spolužačka Alicia, Vídeňačka, se kterou jsem studovala v Dánsku žurnalistiku. Zrovna se vrátila z Kolumbie, já v létě byla ve Středoafrické republice. Tak jsme si sedly do jedné z kavárniček, vyhřívaly se v nesmělém jarním slunci a povídaly si dvě hodiny.

Kromě několika kaváren zde najdete i stánky se zeleninou a ovocem, sýry a uzeninou, oblečením a různým drobným zbožím. V pekařství Market 111 prodávají i bezlepkové pečivo. MarctStandl zase nabízí veganské a vegetariánské jídlo, bio ovoce a zeleninu, jídla ve sklenicích a také malý výběr bezobalových surovin.

Naschmarkt

Nedaleko od centra leží nejznámější vídeňský trh Naschmarkt, který navíc funguje celoročně. Jsou v něm stánky, kavárny i restaurace. Ale žádny raw, vege, bio, local. Tedy raw a vege trochu jo, ale pak je to spíše turecký humus a falafel, italské těstoviny a zelenina a ovoce z dovozu z celého světa. Bezobalové nakupování je tu ale naprosto bezproblémové. Široký výběr zeleniny a ochotní prodavači desítek příchutí falafelu, stačí si přinést vlastní krabičky. Já tu občas právě na humus a falafel chodila. Pokud sem zamíříte, tak se nezapomeňte pokochat i zdobeným vstupem do metra.

Kavárny a bistra

Kaváren jsou ve Vídni stovky. Já teda moc po kavárnách nechodila, přeci jen jsem ve Vídni byla na stáži se stážistickým platem. Zašla jsem si ale do vídeňských klasik – Café Hawelka a Café Jelínek, které si zachovávají stejnou podobu jako před sto lety. Kouzelně ošumělý interiér nedýchá historií jen na oko, vybavení je tu opravdu staré těch sto let. Když si s sebou nepřinesete mobil ani notebook, snadno se ponoříte do dávných časů. A vzhledem k tomu, že většina židlí jsou kouzelné thonetovky, které se stále vyrábějí jen pár kilometrů od mé rodné vesnice, cítila jsem se tu trochu jako doma.

Z těch modernějších kaváren jsem byla v philu, což je nejen kavárna, ale také knihkupectví. Vlastní kavárnu má i každý bezobaláč a pak je tu minimálně ještě jedna sympatická kavárna, které si jednou drobností zaslouží být v souvislosti se zero waste zmíněna…

Biokavárna téměř naproti bezobaláče Lieber Ohne, která nabízí snídaňové a denní menu. Na výběr je z veganských i vegetariánských jídel. Ceny jsou trochu vyšší, polévka 5 eur, hlavní jídlo 8 eur. Kromě toho, že je jejich jídlo připravované ze surovin vypěstovaných v ekologickém zemědělství, dostaly mne jejich toalety. Mají na nich totiž místo jednorázových papírových utěrek malé látkové ručníky. Přes léto mají před kavárnou zahrádku, která dokrášluje milou atmosféru tohoto podniku.

Další místa, která mne ve Vídni zaujala

Top Kino – Malé undergroundové kino s ještě menšími promítacími sály a barem v předsálí. Byla jsem tam na Třech billboardech kousek za Ebbingem, v angličtině. Taky doporučuji.

Nationalbibliothek – Knihovna v areálu Hofburgu. Je možné si do ní zakoupit denní vstupenku, já si ale zařídila celoroční kartičku a po práci nebo mezi zasedáními tam chodila pracovat. Součástí je i několik menších muzeí a (podle fotek) nádherný Státní sál (Prunksaal). Do nich je ale třeba koupit zvláštní lístek, takže já tam nezavítala.

MAK – Muzeum aplikovaného umění plné nádherných židlí, váz, koberců a zajímavých uměleckých instalací o současných tématech. Já měla štěstí a narazila na výstavu, která hledala odpověď na otázku, jestli máme odvahu být udržitelní. MAK patří k menším muzeům, takže se dá pohodlně projít za 2 až 3 hodiny. Já tam byla v úterý večer, kdy je muzeum otevřené až do 22. hodin, a pokud přijdete po 17. hodině, vstupné je jen 5 eur.

Donauinsel – Umělý ostrov na Dunaji, který vznikl při regulování toku v druhé polovině 20. století. V létě je to oblíbená destinace na koupání, procházky, kafíčka i párty. Já jsem tam byla, když foukalo a svítilo jen mrazivé sluníčko, a i tak to byla příjemná procházka. Na ostrově jsou dvě stanice metra, takže se dá hezky dojet na jednu a projít se ke druhé.

Alte Donau – Staré slepé rameno Dunaje, na jehož březích se nachází několik pláží a také marín. V nich je možné si půjčit šlapadlo, vyjet na Dunaj (jen ten starý), opalovat se, koupat se, chillovat. V červnu po stáží jsem měla cestu přes Vídeň z Bruselu, vedro bylo k praštění, na přestup jsem měla čtyři hodiny. Tak jsem znovu napsala Alicii a navrhla, ať se jdeme koupat. Do řeky. Uprostřed Vídně, kdo by to čekal…

Först såg jag Naschmarkt, som är en utomhusmarknad med mat, godis, souvenirer mm. Därefter kom jag till Stephansdomen, som är en megastor kyrka i gotisk stil. Mäktig och enorm, liksom alla liknande kyrkor jag besökt. Jag laddade både mina och mobilens batterier på ett café som jag läst om, där jag beställde Sachertårta, en viennesisk specialitet. Lite torr för min smak men den tjänade sitt syfte att fylla på mitt blodsocker. Jag promenerade längs vad jag trodde var Donau-floden, men som jag sedan insåg bara var en liten kanal intill den enorma floden, som jag fortfarande inte sett.
