Meanwhile, in Toronto…
Playing almost simultaneously with Liam Broady’s match was an interesting encounter between third seeds Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury and Max Purcell/Andrey Rublev. The latter pair stunned the fifth seeds Hugo Nys/Jan Zielinski 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and Nathaniel Lammons/Jackson Withrow 7-6(5), 7-6(7) in the second round, while Ramsbury tried to get their form back by defeating in-form and Roland Garros runner-up this year Sander Gille/Joran Vliegen 6-7(3), 6-3, [12-10] after getting a first-round bye. Somehow, the key to prevail in this match differed by an inch as this match went by.
Purcell/Andrey started their first set with flying colors, emphasizing on anticipation as Purcell’s backhand to put an offense in a net exchange opened the path to a 2-point lead before Andrey’s anticipation resulted in Raj and Joe getting over to their forehand (or volley) side from his forehand returns, resulting in an early break to 1-0. They proceeded to consolidate to 2-0, and Ramsbury hung on well in the first set but they were not able to create further chances thanks to Purcell/Andrey’s defense.
Somehow, Purcell/Andrey almost had the first set earlier in the ninth game thanks to Andrey’s swift forehand return that set the initial set point. Raj’s two unreturned service games saved them from trouble, forcing Andrey to serve for the first set in the tenth game. Eventually, a working short rally ended with Purcell’s smash, which resulted in Purcell/Andrey taking the first set 6-4. Definitely a strong start while Ramsbury tried to figure things out again, likely just like their second-round match.

📸 Eurosport LV
The (main) doubles sector in the US Open was then sealed with the Men's Doubles sector, where the seventh seed and Wimbledon runner-up Max Purcell/Jordan Thompson (hereby referred to as Purson), who previously defeated American thirteenth seeds Nathaniel Lammons/Jackson Withrow 6-4, 7-6(4), took on tenth seed Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz (hereby referred to as Krapuetz), who also stunned the Roland Garros champions and fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo/Mate Pavic 6-3, 6-7(9), 6-4 in the semifinals, for the title. Although the flow appeared rapid, the pair who made necessary adjustments and used it to their advantage, especially on shot winners, prevailed at the end of the match.
Right at the first game, J. Thompson fired a forehand return ace for Purson's earlier break point after a double fault (to 0-0* 15-40), but Krapuetz ended that game with a massive hold to 1-0. It took several games before Krapuetz's unforced error created the Australians' break point, which was the eighth unforced error for the former (who erred 4 times more than the latter's 2 by that time), followed by M. Purcell's functional volley to break 3-2. This was continued by Purson's smooth service game hold to 4-2.
J. Thompson then started the ninth game with his working volley that somehow accidentally hit T. Puetz's body to secure their one-point lead to 5-3* 0-15, but the German tenth seeds still held their serves to 5-4. As a result, the seventh seeds earned their chance to serve for the first set, but they survived 2 break points (the second that was saved with M. Purcell's ace) that was made from K. Krawietz's working smash before ultimately taking the first set 6-4, putting themselves on the course to finally win a Grand Slam title within 34 minutes of play.

Raven Klaasen/Nathaniel Lammons Cruise To Seoul Title | ATP Tour
Raven Klaasen and Nathaniel Lammons’ fledgling partnership claimed its first ATP Tour title Sunday at the Eugene Korea Open Tennis Championships in Seoul, where the top-seeded pairing claimed a 6-1, 7-5 championship match victory against Nicolas Barrientos and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela. Klaasen and Lammons’ only previous tour-level appearance together was on the clay in Lyon in May, where they reached the quarter-finals. Yet the pair settled quickly into their campaign in Seoul, where they dropped just one set all week. On Sunday, the South African-American duo broke the serve of their second-seeded opponents Barrientos and Reyes-Varela four times en route to a 83-minute final triumph at the ATP 250 hard-court event in the South Korean capital. The win extends Lammons’ winning streak at all levels to 11. The American won the ATP Challenger Tour event in Cary in early September before claiming his maiden ATP Tour crown in San Diego a week ago. Both of those triumphs came alongside fellow American Jackson Withrow. It was the 19th tour-level doubles title of Klaasen’s career, and the 39-year-old’s first since he won in Washington in 2021 alongside Ben McLachlan.
