Remembering and Honoring: Patriot Day 2024
Today, we pause to remember the profound impact of September 11th on our nation and the world. Patriot Day is a solemn reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience that define the American spirit. As we honor the memory of those we lost, let us also reflect on our unity and strength in the face of adversity. We will never forget.

AmeriCorps: 30 Years of Impactful Service
Tumblr media
  Remembering 9/11 Through Service
AmeriCorps CEO Joins National Day of Service in Washington, DC AmeriCorps, the national service organization dedicated to addressing critical needs across the United States, marked a momentous September this year. Led by CEO Michael D. Smith, AmeriCorps engaged in a series of impactful events, paying tribute to the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance and celebrating its 30th anniversary.   A Day of Unity and Giving Back On Monday, September 11, Michael D. Smith stood shoulder to shoulder with members of AmeriCorps and Ambassador Katherine Tai, the U.S. Trade Representative, in Washington, D.C. The occasion was the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Together with the 9/11 Day Organization, AmeriCorps volunteers engaged in meal-packing efforts in 18 cities across the nation, collectively providing 6.5 million meal packs for those in need. “Our lives have been shaped by how we, as a country, came together to respond in the wake of 9/11,” said Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps. “Through a spirit of unity and an enduring commitment to our most cherished values, 9/11 Day of Service provides Americans an opportunity to reflect, remember, and act, knowing we're unstoppable when we stand together.”
Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis
AmeriCorps CEO Engages in Roundtable Discussion On Monday, September 18, Michael D. Smith journeyed to New York for a significant roundtable event hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative. This gathering focused on the pressing mental health crisis affecting youth across the nation, particularly in minority and rural communities. Leading thinkers and influencers came together to deliberate on strategies to address these challenges.   A Grand Celebration at Yankee Stadium Later that same evening, Smith was the guest of honor at Yankee Stadium, where the New York Yankees, a proud AmeriCorps partner, celebrated the organization's 30th anniversary in style. The event paid tribute to Street Lab, which was recognized by the Yankees earlier this year.
Advocating for Workforce Development
AmeriCorps CEO at the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference On Saturday, September 23, Michael D. Smith attended the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference, where he met with members of the African American Mayors Association. The discussions revolved around workforce development partnerships and included county officials, labor leaders, and philanthropic figures from across the nation, spanning from Long Beach to Little Rock. “We had a great discussion on workforce development partnerships with the African American Mayors Association, county officials, and labor and philanthropic leaders from across the nation – from Long Beach to Little Rock,” Smith commented following the event. In September, AmeriCorps not only remembered the tragic events of 9/11 through service but also looked forward, addressing critical issues and celebrating three decades of impactful service to the nation. As AmeriCorps continues its mission to strengthen communities and tackle pressing challenges, its commitment to unity and service remains steadfast.   Sources: THX News & AmeriCorps. ✊🏿🖤☮ #ArtIsAWeapon A revolutionary brilliant Black king was born 95 years ago today (January 15, 1929). I do not have the words to adequately convey my deep gratitude, respect and admiration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s service, sacrifice, courage and love. Thank you @berniceaking for continuing your father and mother's work.
Tumblr media
I do not know when or where Dr. King made the speech from which this clip was taken (I have researched for several years). I watch this often - especially when I hear white supremacists and white liberals alike attempt to sanitize Dr. King's radical, revolutionary messages to us. Watch him speaking more of these powerful, transformative words on @youtube: https://youtu.be/voV9ld-Qooc
youtube
"I come here tonight to plead with you. Believe in yourself and believe that you are somebody. I said to a group last night: Nobody else can do this for us. No document can do this for us. No Lincolnian emancipation proclamation can do this for us. No Johnsonian civil rights bill can do this for us.
If the Negro is to be free, he must move down into the inner resources of his own soul and sign with a pen and ink of self-assertive manhood his own emancipation proclamation.
Don’t let anybody take your manhood. Be proud of our heritage…we don’t have anything to be ashamed of.
Somebody told a lie one day. They couched it in language. They made everything Black ugly and evil. Look in your dictionaries and see the synonyms of the word Black. It’s always something degrading and low and sinister. Look at the word White, it’s always something pure, high and clean. Well I want to get the language right tonight.
I want to get the language so right that everyone here will cry out: ‘Yes, I’m Black, I’m proud of it. I’m Black and beautiful!'" - Dr. King
Images and caption reposted from @zebablay I am honestly so deeply depressed and disgusted by everything at the moment. But, a few thoughts on this day: Allyship should not be transactional. Genocide is not and never will be justifiable. And, there is something so deeply perverse about how Western imperial powers harass, surveil and ultimately kill freedom fighters/leaders like MLK only to sanitize and sloganize their messages, then suppress/weaponize their legacies in the name of genocide and empire. This country did not deserve Martin Luther King Jr. Did not. Enjoy your day off or whatever.

Today, Susan’s good friend from @flipjackranch came to help her prune her roses after attending @birdsongorchards pruning workshop. When one prunes, they are investing their time with the hope of a health garden. Volunteering is also investing time with the hope of a healthier community. This coming Monday, Martin Luther King Day, many people across the country are honoring his memory by volunteering. On that fiery day When the towers gave way NY had her heart broke NY had her heart broke . Many heroes died Trying to save someone inside When NY had her heart broke NY had her heart broke . And the world changed that day Forever some will say When NY had her heart broke But like a lover she will rise Once again to touch the skies Yeah, NY had her heart broke NY had her heart broke . Ahh, but she will rise Again . ~ excerpted from John Hiatt’s ‘When New York Had Her Heart Broke’ 📷: Det.
