Tumblr media
  Remembering 9/11 Through Service
AmeriCorps CEO Joins National Day of Service in Washington, DC AmeriCorps, the national service organization dedicated to addressing critical needs across the United States, marked a momentous September this year. Led by CEO Michael D. Smith, AmeriCorps engaged in a series of impactful events, paying tribute to the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance and celebrating its 30th anniversary.   A Day of Unity and Giving Back On Monday, September 11, Michael D. Smith stood shoulder to shoulder with members of AmeriCorps and Ambassador Katherine Tai, the U.S. Trade Representative, in Washington, D.C. The occasion was the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Together with the 9/11 Day Organization, AmeriCorps volunteers engaged in meal-packing efforts in 18 cities across the nation, collectively providing 6.5 million meal packs for those in need. “Our lives have been shaped by how we, as a country, came together to respond in the wake of 9/11,” said Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps. “Through a spirit of unity and an enduring commitment to our most cherished values, 9/11 Day of Service provides Americans an opportunity to reflect, remember, and act, knowing we're unstoppable when we stand together.”
Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis
AmeriCorps CEO Engages in Roundtable Discussion On Monday, September 18, Michael D. Smith journeyed to New York for a significant roundtable event hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative. This gathering focused on the pressing mental health crisis affecting youth across the nation, particularly in minority and rural communities. Leading thinkers and influencers came together to deliberate on strategies to address these challenges.   A Grand Celebration at Yankee Stadium Later that same evening, Smith was the guest of honor at Yankee Stadium, where the New York Yankees, a proud AmeriCorps partner, celebrated the organization's 30th anniversary in style. The event paid tribute to Street Lab, which was recognized by the Yankees earlier this year.
Advocating for Workforce Development
AmeriCorps CEO at the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference On Saturday, September 23, Michael D. Smith attended the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference, where he met with members of the African American Mayors Association. The discussions revolved around workforce development partnerships and included county officials, labor leaders, and philanthropic figures from across the nation, spanning from Long Beach to Little Rock. “We had a great discussion on workforce development partnerships with the African American Mayors Association, county officials, and labor and philanthropic leaders from across the nation – from Long Beach to Little Rock,” Smith commented following the event. In September, AmeriCorps not only remembered the tragic events of 9/11 through service but also looked forward, addressing critical issues and celebrating three decades of impactful service to the nation. As AmeriCorps continues its mission to strengthen communities and tackle pressing challenges, its commitment to unity and service remains steadfast.   Sources: THX News & AmeriCorps. What is the Mental Health of kids?
Tumblr media
The emotional, psychological, and social well-being of children is referred to as their "mental health." It influences children's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and how they cope with stress, interact with others, and make decisions. A child's mental health is crucial to their overall development and can have a big impact on their success at school, in their relationships, and in the future.
Typical issues with children's mental health include:
Generalized anxiety disorder, particular phobias, separation anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder are examples of anxiety disorders. Children with anxiety disorders may worry, fear, and avoid specific situations excessively.
Depression: Children can experience depression, which may manifest as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It can impact a child's ability to focus, follow instructions, and control impulsive behavior.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD is a developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and behavior. Children with ASD may struggle with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities.
Eating Disorders: Conditions like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder can develop in childhood or adolescence. These disorders involve distorted eating patterns, body image issues, and potentially serious physical health consequences.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Children who experience or witness traumatic events, such as abuse, violence, or natural disasters, can develop PTSD. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional distress.
Behavioral Disorders: Two instances of behavioral disorders are oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. These problems can cause children to act aggressively, defy authority figures, break rules, and have trouble controlling their impulses.
It's crucial to remember that this list is not all-inclusive and that children might experience a wide range of mental health issues. Promoting kids mental health and addressing any issues they may have requires early identification, appropriate care, and access to mental health services.

Unveiling The Facets of Mental Health: Harnessing Data to Improve Wellbeing
In the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced lives, mental health has emerged as a significant issue demanding our attention. While it’s often overlooked, mental health is just as important as our physical wellbeing. It’s time we dig deeper into the numbers and statistics to understand this complex topic more clearly. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1 billion people globally suffer from a mental disorder, with depression being the leading cause of illness and disability. While these numbers are alarming, they also offer an opportunity for us to take proactive measures in mitigating these conditions.
Another key data point we should consider is the significant gap in mental health services around the world. Around 75% of people in low- and middle-income countries cannot access the mental health services they need. It emphasizes the importance of advocating for increased funding and resources for mental health services across the globe.
Looking at the demographic patterns, we find that youth are particularly affected. Recent data indicates that suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds. Given the integral role of mental health in shaping our future generations, it’s crucial to create an open dialogue around it.
While these statistics can be overwhelming, they also highlight the immense importance of self-care and early intervention. Whether it’s setting aside time for mindfulness meditation, taking up a hobby, or reaching out to a mental health professional, remember - it’s okay not to be okay. Always prioritize your mental health and encourage others to do the same.
We will continue to bring forward unique data and insights to highlight the importance of mental health and ways to improve it. Remember, every conversation, every share, every like brings us one step closer to breaking the stigma associated with mental health.

Is Duke-NUS Research the Key to Solving Singapore's Youth Mental Health Issues?
Depression and anxiety symptoms among Singaporean youths have resulted in them missing on average 190 hours—or 24 days—of school, according to a survey of parents in Singapore by Duke-NUS Medical School and the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). The survey also found that these youths’ school performance dropped by an estimated 63%. While youths missed an average of 24 days because of their symptoms, 13% of them missed three months or more. The parents reported a similar reduction in their child’s ability to engage in other daily activities, revealing that these conditions permeate all facets of the child’s life.   “The real effects of untreated mental health conditions among youth will extend well into adulthood when they are less able to obtain rewarding and high-paying jobs due to poor school performance and other challenges resulting from their illness,” said Professor Eric Finkelstein, a health economist from Duke-NUS’ Health Services & Systems Research and senior author of the study.   This study follows on from a similar survey among Singaporean adults published recently, which showed that depression and anxiety among adults are responsible for as much as a 2.9% reduction in Gross Domestic Product due to roughly 1 in 5 adults having such symptoms. This latest survey, conducted between April and June 2022, asked 991 parents about their children, totalling 1,515 youths, in order to gauge the state of youth mental health. The initial screening survey identified 104 parents whose children, aged 4 to 21, had depression or anxiety symptoms. These parents then filled out a more comprehensive survey with questions on school absences, school performance and healthcare utilisation. The parents’ responses indicated that nearly 12% of the youths had symptoms consistent with depression while approximately 13% had symptoms consistent with anxiety; in total, 16.2% of the youths were reported to have symptoms consistent with at least one of these conditions. Despite this, only 15% had a formal diagnosis from a health professional, suggesting that many remain untreated. This may explain why nearly two-thirds of the affected youths had an unplanned visit to an emergency department and just over half required inpatient hospitalisation over the past year. The parents reported spending an average of S$10,250 on medical care as a result of their children’s mental health condition. At the population level, direct healthcare costs for these conditions among youths are estimated to be S$1.2 billion.   Assistant Professor Irene Teo from Duke-NUS’ HSSR program and co-author of the study added, “The results from our study show that greater outreach efforts are needed to encourage both children and adults to take advantage of the many avenues to obtain mental health treatments in Singapore.”   Associate Professor Daniel Fung, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Mental Health, and a co-author of the study said: “These findings point to the importance of early intervention to help reduce the risk of long-term complications and improve outcomes. For this to happen, mental health awareness and literacy is necessary. For instance, if the parent recognises the symptoms (awareness) and knows what to do (literacy), they could encourage the child to talk about it or suggest getting some help,”   Professor Finkelstein added, “Along with greater access to evidence-based treatments, we should be implementing screening programmes for both children and adults to identify mental health conditions early, make better use of peer support programs and increase efforts to destigmatise mental health. With the high prevalence and costs of mental illness among both children and adults, a successful mental health strategy should take on the same level of urgency as Singapore’s War on Diabetes.”   Sources: THX News & Duke-NUS Medical School.
