Leave a comment if you have any questions. In all I haven’t been this excited about a Machine expansion since Pulswerk came out like 2 years ago and I really recommend you checkout this one if you are into synthpop, and especially the 80s / early 90s sound. New patterns and projects for instant inspiration. The links are provided solely by this site's users for informational and educational purposes. LUSH SYNTH POP Exclusive sounds for modern synth pop production. Don’t get me wrong, the leads sound good too, but you can cook up most of them in Massive without too much tweaking. None of the files shown here are hosted or transmitted by this server. I’m especially impressed by the basses and the pads, not so excited by the leads. Neon Drive The sounds of synths throughout the age Queensbridge Story Created by Mobb Deeps Havoc, one of hip hops living legends Molten Veil Dynamic, dark. Moving on to the instruments, those sounds really good too. My favourite so far is the Neon Lights kit. This mix was created on a Native Instruments Traxtor Kontrol S4. The kits and individual hits really brings back the 80s in style, while at the same time feeling fresh and up to date. Sun Ra Was Right (Kususa Remix) STUDIO APARTMENT, Monique Bingham, Kususa N.E.O.N. The first thing that struck me was the quality of the included drum kits and one shots. I’ve been dabbling in 80s pop sounds for a while now so getting this one was a no-brainer. Neon Drive promises ‘a cascade of lush chords, pads, enraptured melody, and distinct retro drums’ that will ‘teleport through 80s production techniques and arrive in the future’, and it certainly does not disappoint. NEON DRIVE features a library of sounds drawing heavily on production techniques, instrumentation, and melodic construction native to 80s synth pop. It was initially added to our database on 01. The latest version of Native Instruments Neon Drive is currently unknown. It was checked for updates 63 times by the users of our client application UpdateStar during the last month.

ID. STELLA BEATRIX TRAVERS. AGE.  TWENTY FIVE. RESIDENTIAL AREA.  SOUTHSIDE VILLAGE. HOMETOWN.  SIESTA KEY NATIVE. JOB.  CASHIER AT DAVE’S RECORD SHOP. FACECLAIM.  KAIA GERBER
late-night surf & skate sessions, the scent of spray paint and cigarettes, torn stockings & combat boots, vinyl collection, video games, dinosaur nuggets covered in “bloody” ketchup, tired eyes,   uncertain paths, wasting time on youtube, living in the shadows, feeling out of place, driving fast, blasting music late at night, neon signs,   tattoos, the smell of perfume masking marijuana.
biography.
Growing up was very unusual for Stella, to say the least. For a while, she was convinced her brother was actually her father. Despite there only being a ten-year difference in age, she didn’t know any better. He was the only person raising her. Memories of her parents are blurry; if not totally made up in her head. The human mind is powerful enough to have imagined being cared for by anyone other than her brother. The only thing she knows for sure is that her parents were hippies and never around. When she was old enough, she learned through her brother that their father was imprisoned for child endangerment among other charges. He apparently left his stash of mushrooms out and baby Stella got into the bag and almost swallowed them. If it weren’t for her brother’s quick reflexes, who knows if she would still be alive. She’ll always be grateful to him that he took such good care of her at such an early age.
After their father was arrested, their mother ran off with some lover boy to continue her life as a free spirit. Stella believes she’s a little bit of a flower child herself. She loves the rain and sunshine and can spend all day and night outdoors with the earth. She also works in a record shop and has taken to old 70s and 80s bands like The Doors and Sublime. But she’d be lying if she said she didn’t inherit some of her brother’s thorns. She experiences rage blackouts and carries around a switchblade everywhere she goes. Dante gave it to her as a birthday gift when she turned sixteen after an ex-boyfriend tried to assault her inside his car. She’s not much for relationships anymore but loves making out with people - mostly her girlfriends. For years, she thought it was just a matter of fun, but she’s since come to terms with her bisexuality. She doesn’t openly talk about it, but a lot of her friends already know.
Currently, she’s what you would consider homeless. For the past year, she’s been couch-surfing, hopping from one friend’s house to the next. Prior to this, she was living with her brother but moved out on her own. He never asked her to leave. She just thought it would be better if they had their privacy. She was also a little tired of hearing him talk to her like a parent. They were older now, she didn’t want to be watched over and given rules to abide by. Especially when she knows he’s not following any rules himself. Her rebellious nature is an exact correlation to that. She’s become wild and crazy because he’s wild and crazy. But she’s also very nurturing and loves to cook for him and take care of him too whenever she’s given the chance. Not just because she owes him, but because he’s the most important person she has in her life.
about.
Living: Stella is currently couch-hopping between friends. Before that, she was living with her older brother Dante. He didn’t kick her out or anything like that. She just wanted to give them both more space. It’s been a year.
Profession: She’s currently working behind the cash register at Dave’s Record Shop. She loves music, mostly old-school rock, but can’t play any instruments herself. However, that doesn’t stop her from singing during long car drives and hot showers.
Interests:  She loves surfing (her brother taught her everything she knows), skateboarding, spray painting, 80s slasher movies, and parties.
Relationship: Single and bisexual. For as long as she can remember she’s been attracted to both sexes, but more recently she’s come to terms with her sexuality. Making out with her friends wasn’t just for fun, she actually likes girls too.
Challenge: Growing up and moving forward with her life. She’s always relied on other people, and she’s still doing that now. She’s coasting through life instead of trying to put down roots and build a future. She doesn’t like planning ahead. Her life is in the present and figures, whatever happens, happens.
Personality: She’s very guarded, but also very fun. Her upbringing was unusual, to say the least. For years she thought her brother was her father. They’re only ten years apart, but what did she know? He was the only person taking care of her since … birth. Her parents were hippies and never around and any memories of them are blurry or probably made up. She knows (from her brother) that her dad went to jail and she almost died when she got into his drug stash. Her mother took off with some lover boy and that was the last they saw of her. Stella was only four. Because her brother had so much responsibility at such a young age, he was more of a friend than a parent. They would surf, play video games, eat dinosaur nuggets with lots of ketchup and pretend it was blood. He made her life an adventure and she still likes to live it that way even at 25.

more jazz please
My roommates Leong, Sophie, (Charles) and I were coming from a Yale sporting event. The sky looked like a dirty Swiffer-mop and the wind seemed to be ignoring the posted 20mph speed limit. It was a typical spring day in New Haven, overcast, 65°, with intermittent, drizzling rain. I was thinking it was a good day to be a duck.
We were looking for something to gnaw on and a beverage - of the alcoholic variety. We picked up some Mike’s hard cider (featured in our refrigerator now), which proves college students really do plan for the future.
It was about 4pm and the streets were puddled, slick-looking and empty. The lone passing car sounded like it was riding on a sponge. I was wearing a navy blue, short sleeve Polo dress, a matching Polo bucket hat (for the rain) and a slub knit hoodie that I ‘borrowed’ from Sunny forEVER (seriously, I ordered her a replacement from Amazon) and Roxy boat shoes.
On a side street, a “party-bike” sat parked, sad and abandoned in the rain. A party-bike is a tram fitted up as a bar that slowly drives noisy drunks around. The drunks sit around a “U” shaped bar, on small, backless stools welded onto the tram. Yes, an open-air bar on wheels. I can’t help thinking that a lawyer came up with the idea, because what could go wrong?
The first time I saw a “sightseeing” party-bike was on Beale Street, in Memphis Tennessee. Memphis is the Disneyland of barbeque and the blues. Every storefront for blocks is an open air blues bar, a barbeque place or souvenir shop (or all three at once). Party-bikes make sense there, because intoxication is like oxygen in Memphis. It's a party-bikes native environment. In New Haven, they seem cheap, excessive and opportunistic.
As we were walking, in the distance, we heard the wail of a saxophone and a beat so clear, that the sound seemed to linger and shimmer in the air, like a cartoon neon ‘Jazz’ sign. We instantly turned that way and discovered it was coming from a place called “Three Sheets” which was having open-mic tryouts for the house band.
It’s a bar that serves food and there’s a ‘beer goddess’ painted on one wall. In Georgia, we’d call it a ‘fern bar.' We found a table in the darker back, out of the way, and settled in. A waitress quickly took our orders and brought us several IPA beers.
Near a platform stage, there were 6 or 8 musicians sitting around (with their instruments) waiting to take a turn forming a trio with the house drummer and bass who were laying down a constant beat. One would step in with a guitar and play for a hot minute, then a guy with the sax, another with a trumpet and yet another with a clarinet, it went on and on. They each had a solo, at some point, and it made me wonder why I don’t listen to more jazz.
Our afternoon of music was something Sophie had wished for. Earlier that morning, as we were leaving the residence, she’d said, “I wish there was a concert or something going on tonight - something musical,” and boom, we get this. Still, I don’t subscribe to the idea of holy intervention.
I hate it when I hear people say, “God never gives us more than we can handle.” I bristle, my head snaps in the direction of the speaker, I want to see who that dumb-ass is. My parents and sister are doctors, and believe me, people are dying every day in situations that are more than they can handle. Heart attacks, staph infections, gunshot wounds, covid, cancer - Uggg, sorry, I got off track and boiled-over there.
Anyway, we had some jazzy music and incredible Vietnamese pulled-pork sandwiches with fries and a smoky ketchup that I could have just drunk. . . *I put (Charles) in brackets because, as our driver and escort, he’s usually there in the background when we’re not in the residence. But his presence is circumscribed, because he’s not there socially. Is it rude not to include him in every narrative? I don’t know - it's a habit.

Indie Country Music Up & Comer Seth Alexander Set To Release “Till Your Boots Are Dirty”
Tumblr media
Nashville-based singer-songwriter and indie country recording artist Seth Alexander (Platform EightyNine Music) announced the scheduled release of his newest single “Till Your Boots Are Dirty.”* Penned by Nashville songwriters Danny Wells, Billy Croft and Richard Donahue, and co-produced by Donahue/Next Level Entertainment (Nashville, TN), the track will be available via all digital retail outlets and streaming platforms Friday, March 17, 2023. (Presale/pre-save event begins March 3, 2023; digital services provided by Ed Gertler/Digital Streaming Services.) Signature guitar licks keep steady time with hard-hitting percussion to drive home matter-of-fact lyrics that reinforce a storyline staking claim to a prideful rural recognition earned. The mid-tempo leads toward a dancefloor favorite. “I come from a small farm town in Idaho; when I initially heard the demo, it just hit home for me,” said New Plymouth, Idaho native, Seth Alexander. “Working a farm or a ranch is not a trend; you have to live the lifestyle to really understand it. Wearing dirty boots comes with the territory, and that dirt carries a lot of prideful weight.” YOU AIN’T COUNTRY  TIL YOU HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR LEND A HAND DO A FAVOR TAKE UP THE SLACK GIVE SOMETHING BACK YOU AIN’T COUNTRY  TIL YOUR FOUR-WHEEL PLOW BEHIND THE TRACTOR BREAKS SOME GROUND  AND STIRS UP SOME DUST  YEAH THAT’S A MUST YOU AIN’T COUNTRY TIL  YOU STUCK YOUR TRUCK, KNEE-DEEP OUT IN THE MUD WAY BACK IN THE STICKS THAT’S HOW IT IS LATE TO BED AND BACK UP EARLY YOU AIN’T COUNTRY NO TIL YOUR BOOTS ARE DIRTY The corresponding “Till Your Boots Are Dirty” lyric video will be available March 23, 2023. Track Info Artist: Seth Alexander Song Title: “Till Your Boots Are Dirty” Label: Platform EightyNine Music Written by: Danny Wells/Billy Croft/Richard Donahue Produced by:  Richard Donahue Distribution by: Ed Gertler/Digital Retail Streaming Services Release Date: March 17, 2023 Presale/Pre-Save Event: March 3, 2023 Run Time: 3:09 ABOUT The Oregon-born dream seeker moved to Music City in 2018. Within 12 months of Seth Alexander’s arrival, his day job landed him a chance to meet with one of Nashville’s respected producers, Richard Donahue. Donahue, who was a former band member of The Accents (signed to RCA Records for 12 years), transitioned to artist development and production. The two quickly developed camaraderie. The working relationship brought Seth into the studio where he recorded alongside the likes of Kerry Marx (Musical Director for the Grand Ole Opry), Catherine Marx and Tommy Harden (Reba’s keyboard player and drummer) and Tony King (harmony vocalist for Brooks and Dunn). Seth’s musical tastes were influenced early on by the tunes that sang from the car stereo of his granddad’s old red Datsun (Haggard, Jones, Keith Whitley, George Strait and Garth), and “cousin Bobby” who played at fairs and festivals, and carried Seth in tow. Seth learned to play guitar as a six-year-old on an instrument that his granddad bought for him at a garage sale. Honing his song craft, Seth took cues from Bobby and two of his favorite songwriters, Craig Wiseman and Jeffrey Steele. An active member of the Music City community, Seth maintains a steady writing appointment schedule with some of Nashville’s finest; he’s performed at notable venues including The Local, Live Oak and Commodore Grille. He released two original tunes in 2022 (“Millionaire” and “Neon Bar”); the corresponding “Millionaire” music video debuted on The Country Network. Read the full article

There are certain moments in life in which one can tell are important. Even without the benefits of hindsight, you just know that whatever is happening is pivotal, memorable. Life is appreciated retrospectively until you are submerged in scenarios and situations that seem significant.
Ethan knows this is important, he's known this for a while. He's had time to mentally prepare himself for the sudden surge of dread that washes over him, the stickiness of his palms and the tsunamis of self-doubt. This is a big moment, it will be a big moment, and he does not need hindsight to figure this out. He feels as though he's in some coming-of-age Disney Channel movie his sister used to watch when she'd monopolize the television during summer vacations. Ethan's worked hard for this, he just doesn't want to play a sepia montage of childhood to understand this moment's importance.
He thinks of his first-ever music lesson, with Mr Schumer in first grade. He remembers the maracas being nauseatingly sticky and the tambourine's tiny cymbals being stuck together by some unidentifiable congealed substance. His backside was numb from being sat crosslegged on the linoleum floor, his legs tingling with pins and needles, but he remembers feeling overwhelmingly happy. The tinny ringing of the background disk hummed in the stuffy classroom air as innocently unrhythmic arms shook instruments violently, grins plastered on lunch-stained faces. Ethan tastes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
He ran into Mr Schumer a few weeks back, in the supermarket. He was buying wine for his wife, he'd told Ethan it was their fifteen-year anniversary. This made Ethan feel old, he recalled a clean-shaven young man bringing his girlfriend into their classroom on a Friday afternoon, subjecting her to their inquisitive eyes and naively inappropriate questions. Mr Schumer knew about the band, he said he'd seen them on posters plastered on street corners, even heard the odd song on the local radio station. Apparently, he always knew that Ethan would pursue music, or at least something creative. This was strange because Ethan was never prodigal or exceptionally good, he must have been enthusiastic.
Ethan thinks about the first time he really listened to music. It was when he and his father had taken a drive out of town to fetch the Christmas tree from a family friend's farm. Grayson could barely breathe through his clogged sinuses and Cameron was helping their mother assemble a gingerbread house, too afraid to face the cold. Ethan reckons he must have been around six. Just him and his dad in their car. This was when he'd first been introduced to The Beegees, his father urging him to appreciate 'proper' music. Ethan relives the fact he was unable to comprehend why Barry, Robin and Maurice were singing in such high-pitched voices, marvelling at their ability to not sound stupid. 'I know your eyes in the morning sun' were words he'd soon know but not fully understand, as familiar as the taste of cinnamon and cloves.
"You nervous?"
His brother's lumbering entrance cracks open his blissful reverie. Grayson looks positively terrified, his face pale and eyebrows drawn inward into an unsettling crease. His frame fills the doorframe, blocking the neon lighting of the hallway. The dressing room falls dim. Ethan licks his lips in search of words but decides to shake his head anyway.
"You know, nerves are good. They mean you give a shit, and that's important."
Ethan doesn't reply. Grayson, suddenly alarmed by his silence continues. "Everyone believes in you, E. You guys have got this in the bag - like you've basically already won. Pretty much everyone in the crowd is wearing a SU t-shirt."
Ethan turns to look at himself in the mirror. Sadly, it is not framed with dying lightbulbs, it's not particularly atmospheric. He notes that he doesn't look especially nervous or apprehensive, he looks normal. Griff had told him to dress nice, Ethan does not really know what that means.  He settled for black jeans and an oversized white t-shirt, he looks like himself. "If you wanna talk about it, you know, vent and like let everything out, you can-" "I'm fine, Gray." "That's the kind of shit nervous people say." "I'm not nervous." "OK," Grayson does not sound very convinced, he rolls his eyes at his brother's stoicism, "Griff and Manny have gone for a drink." "I know." "Are they planning on getting drunk or something?" "They're getting coffee." "Oh."
Ethan runs a tattooed hand through his hair, purposefully dishevelling it to his desired look. He gives himself another glance in the mirror, then turns to sit on the fake leather couch the venue has provided them, crossing one leg over the other. Maybe he should have accepted Griff's invitation to join them on their venture for coffee, he feels encased in the grimy walls of their dressing room. Grayson appears jittery; he fiddles with the signet ring on his index finger, twisting it relentlessly. This is his first time backstage and it shows.
"Mom and Cam are in the audience," he says once he's bored of his heirloom jewellery. "Mom's here?" Ethan can't tell whether the knowledge of his mother's presence in the crowd makes him feel better or worse. "In merch and all." "Jesus."
Ethan imagines his mother being thrown about in the sweat-drenched mosh, her perfectly styled hair getting tousled by rambunctious, inebriated youths. He can picture her grimace, grinning through the pain for the sake of her son, singing words she's not too fond of but were written in her garage. She never really wanted him to pursue the band, she didn't think it would amount to anything worthwhile; a trio of slightly overzealous boys writing songs about girls who listen to The Smiths and drink vodka straight. Ethan's mother loves him, she wants the best for him and until the video of the boys performing a Beatles song when viral on YouTube, she had assumed law school was the way to go.
"Don't let Manny curse," Grayson's eyes are wide with trivial fear. "I can't make any promises."
It's incredibly naive to assume that Manny won't speak profanely onstage, it's very rare that he does not. Being on the synthesizer, he is restricted from engaging with the crowd the same way in which Griff, their frontman can. Manny has developed an affinity for screaming various explosives into his mic as the beat drops in their more upbeat songs, grinning wide with unabashed pride as the audience cheers in response. Both Ethan and Grayson know their mother will not be impressed, it's almost as though they are constantly trying to prove to her that this was the right decision. Letting them move to Los Angeles to follow their dreams was not an easy thing for her to do, they knew this all too well.
"Do you know which song you're gonna play?" Grayson moves to perch himself against the precarious dressing table, his broad frame covering the mirror entirely, "Probably There's a Reason Why." "Nice," he elongates the vowel. "It's the video that has the most views, we're assuming that it's the one that people are most likely to know." "Smart move."
Griffin Fraser is trustworthy. Of all people, Grayson Dolan would know this. When he scuffed his knee on the kindergarten tarmac on their first day of school, to when his collarbone popped out on the football field during their championship game, Griff was there. With floppy hair and a tendency to speak almost irritatingly slowly, Griff has always been a hit with the ladies, swanning his way through school at the top of the hierarchy. As Grayson's best friend and Ethan's bandmate, it's almost as though he's their triplet - a third Dolan brother. His voice sounds like the lovechild of a Gallagher brother and an indistinguishable eighties superstar that everyone's uncle adores. Griff calls the shots and nobody complains.
"What are Patchwork gonna play?" "I overheard their Stefan talking to one of the runners, I didn't recognise the song's name. That can't be a good thing."
Ethan shakes his head in denial, Patchwork are good. LA natives with catchy melodies and heavy bass, they're popular at house parties and with those lighting spliffs in their parents' basements. Ethan listens to them himself, he likes their stuff. With three edgy musicians oozing sex appeal and singing about problematic boyfriends and systematic sexism, they are always crowd-pleasers. This battle had become a war as soon as El Rey had announced that the competition would pit Sunday’s Unrest (Ethan’s band) against Patchwork. Things get personal when bands are compared, particularly when they are familiar with one another. Ethan is too familiar with Patchwork. Too caught up in figuring out whether this familiarity is a blessing or a curse. "I wouldn't worry about them, E." "This is a competition, I'm supposed to worry." "Not if you're the best band." "That's not up to you to decide." "Unfortunately."
There's a laugh from outside. A loud, ferocious female laugh that has Ethan and Grayson sharing a confused look. She waltzes into the room without knocking on the opened door, her hair fanning behind her. "No way were you just listening to our conversation," the younger twin groans, running a hand over his face. "This is a competition," she mocks, a smirk taking over her flushed face and Ethan wishes he doesn’t recall how her lips taste, "I'm supposed to eavesdrop."
Ethan rolls his eyes at her, not being able to believe the fact he hadn't seen this coming. The intimidation tactic. Sending Y/N Y/L/N into their dressing room as a means of psyching the band out, getting into his head. Dangling the most brilliant prize in front of him, only to snatch it away with his own regret. It’s just him and her. And his brother. "Nice to see you, Y/N," he deadpans, untangling his legs and sitting upright on the couch. "You too, E," she leans against the doorframe and crosses her arms over her chest.
Y/N Y/L/N could easily be the face of her generation. She's just too cool. In a worn looking Paul McCartney T-shirt and a black miniskirt, Y/N exudes confidence. Her effortlessly messy hair has been tucked behind her ears, showing an array of silver studs in her lobes. An embodiment of edgy, the perfect frontwoman. Patchwork burst onto the music scene a few years ago, garnering attention with their memorable choruses and ability to soundtrack melancholy lyrics with an upbeat melody. Y/N, a personable and eccentric vocalist and guitarist, is venerated by many a journalist. Her interviews go viral online as she giggles and charms her way through somewhat tricky questions, always relatable and consistently loveable. There's Maria on the drums. She's rather quiet, not usually partaking much in press events but is gorgeous nonetheless, in a mysterious nobody-can-tell-what-she's-thinking-but-they-want-to-know-everything-about-her kind of way. Sara is on bass, she's the funny member of the band, hilariously clumsy and adorable. Her self-deprecating sense of humour makes her a hit with audience members as she cracks jokes at her own expense during their sets. Patchwork are the whole package, people either want to sleep with them or be them. It's almost irritating how perfect they are.
"How've you been, Y/N?" Grayson asks politely, cocking his head to one side as though the analyze her every detail. "Not too bad, I'm a little nervous though," there's an edge to her voice that sounds sincere, Ethan wants to feel sympathy for her because he can empathize wholeheartedly. But, she's competition and he desperately wants to detach any feeling from her. Grayson nods his head slowly, unsure of what to say. It's as though he doesn't want to offer her comfort in fear that it might give her a sudden boost of confidence which, in turn, would lead to Patchwork winning the competition. Is he a sadist?
"What song are you guys playing tonight?" Y/N looks at Ethan almost hopefully. He figures there's no harm telling the truth, "There's a Reason Why." "I like that one." "Yeah, me too."
Grayson senses some uneasiness in the room, as though they're dancing around a topic that he is utterly unaware of. It's like they're communicating telepathically or something. He feels a slight pang of jealous, telepathy is his and Ethan's thing. "What about you, Y/N?" he asks, despite knowing the answer. "If I Could Change Your Mind," she shrugs, "it's kind of an old one." "I know it," Ethan says with a certain intensity that makes her pout a little, her bottom lip jutting outwards ever so slightly. "I expect to see you singing along then," Y/N says, looking at him intently before turning on her heel and walking out through the opened door.
"May the best band win!" she calls from down the corridor.

The room is gently spinning. The edges of objects like tables and chairs are soft and blur into one another. This is a suitable state of tipsy. Appropriate. Enjoyable but sensible, knocking the edge off. Ethan, Manny and Griff are celebrating. Charlamagne just went gold and they could not be happier. They're not even twenty-one but their management (consisting of a middle-aged man named Stefan) snuck them into this indistinctive bar downtown, buying rounds of drink and clapping each of the boys on the back.
"We've made it," Manny slurs, "We've actually fucking made it. Shit. Fuck." "I know," Griff's eyes are wide and he looks as though he's seeing in colour for the first time in his life, "this is insane." "Really insane," is all Ethan can manage.
He sips at his whisky, unable to distinguish whether he enjoys the burn it leaves in his throat. He's never gone out drinking before, only ever passed around a bottle of wine or gotten pissed of Manny's dad's beers in their basement. This is what being a rockstar tastes like, he thinks. Ethan called Grayson a few hours ago to tell him the news. Then he'd called his mother and then his grandmother and then his aunt and then he'd shoved his phone into his back pocket and shaken his head in disbelief. The song he's written. The song he'd shown Griff and asked for some help with. The song Manny said was shit, to begin with, but then actually really liked once they got to play it. Charlamagne. Gold.
"We're fucking famous," says Manny, puffing out his chest a little. "Sort of," Ethan half laughs. "Three boys from New Jersey with weird music tastes," Griff muses, "this is the kind of shit they make movies about." "Indie movies," Ethan clarifies.
He lets his eyes roam across the room for a second, dancing over the warped figures in his drunken haze. And that's when he sees her. The girl he'd hooked up with within the first month of moving to Los Angeles. The one with the weird taste in music like him, with the messy hair and wide smile and obnoxious laugh. It had been at Griff's apartment, (it was essentially a room in an almost dilapidated building, Griffin used words like 'rustic' and 'charming' in order to describe it) she'd flirted nonchalantly with him and he was slightly enamoured. Ethan thought she was perfect; her snide remarks at Manny's bad jokes, the way she and her bandmates acted like sibling rather than colleagues and the way she told him his Jersey accent was impossibly strong. Ethan doesn't think he has an accent. They'd vanished into Griff's 'bedroom', high on adrenaline and Manny and Sara's secondhand smoke. Neither of them was intoxicated, and yet the night is a blur of tangled limbs and sheer excitement with flashes of clarity in her laugh and smile.
Y/N Y/L/N.
She's here with her band too, he remembers that Stefan is also their manager. They are good. Stitchwork? Crochet? Patchwork. "Holy shit! It's Maria! And Sara! Fucking hell, Y/N!" Manny yells, drawing the attention of all the drinkers in the velvet-adorned room.
The three girls seem so glide towards them, catching eyes and throwing smiles in all directions like confetti. Ethan notices that Stefan catches them before Patchwork meets Sunday's Unrest. Their manager is gesticulating wildly, causing Y/N to chuckle, Maria to snort and Sara rolls her eyes mockingly. He thinks maybe Stefan is warning them of the state of the boys' drunkenness as if to preface their meeting with a few words of caution. Ethan figures this is sensible.
"Get over here!" Manny howls, waving his heavy arms above his head like he's drowning in a cola and Bacardi riptide. "If it isn't Captain Fuckboy and his devout followers!" Sara retorts, swaggering past her manager and straight towards the boys' booth. Griff's eyebrows draw inwards, "Sara, are you pissed?" "Pissed off," she shrugs, folding her arms over her leather-clad chest and glaring at Ethan Dolan with intensity.
Shit.
"Oh," Manny is as smug as a younger sibling, grinning at Ethan with little camaraderie, "you're talking about Ethan." "You know I am." "Listen, neither Manuel or I am responsible for our bandmate's endeavours," Griffin attempts to sound unfazed. Ethan has nothing to say, he feels his cheeks heating up with what could be embarrassment or shame, but he's reached the stage of drunkenness in which all emotions bleed into a melancholic mess.
Sara ignores both of the floppy-haired boys, her stare focusing on Ethan, "You could have called her, or texted her. She really liked you."
Ethan Dolan is not a douchebag. He does not mess girls around, he never has and doubts he ever will. But he slipped up when it comes to Y/N Y/L/N. To say he is intimidated by her is a pathetic excuse, but it's the closest he can come to an explanation. Guys like him do not get with girls like her, she's too cool. He was scared, terrified of his imminent failure when it comes to dating. So he decided it would be best if he pretended their encounter never happened. It gave him peace of mind for maybe an hour or so. "I didn't think Y/N wanted to pursue anything," is what comes out of his mouth, his voice sounds alien.
"You're a dick, Ethan."
----
O C T O B E R  2 0 1 9
Grayson Dolan waits until the girl in the Paul McCartney t-shirt is out of earshot. He listens to the rhythmic clicking of her ankle-boots on the hallway floor, hearing them fade until he and his brother are sat in silence. "Remind me when you wrote the song," he says. "Excuse me?" "Remind me when you wrote There's A Reason Why." "I don't know, man. Like this time last year?" Ethan knows exactly when he wrote it, he can tell you which room it was written in. "Right," his brother doesn't sound convinced.
It's about Y/N. It's blatantly obvious that Ethan Dolan wrote the song about her. Or at least about that night in the unknown bar, avoiding her the whole time they were there. It's about how she tried to make conversation with him, asking him if he's been busy, fishing for clues as to why he never replied to her texts or answered her calls.
Y/N does not chase anyone, she gets chased. Ethan Dolan was the only exception. He was worth chasing. She reached out to him maybe five or six times, kicking herself when she'd been ignored. She's better than that and she knew it.
Ethan puffs air through his lips, drumming his palms quickly on his thighs and stands up. He stretches his tense arms out in front of him, shaking away his apprehension. This is too important, this opportunity is too big. He can't let himself fall into the chasm of anxious thoughts, all the 'what ifs' and 'maybes'.
"I'm gonna go find Griff and Manny," he rasps.
----
D E C E M B E R  2 0 1 8
He can't feel his hands. He watches his fingers press down on the stiff keys, he hears the sound it makes. But his hands are numb. His head spins, his chest burning with the leftover alcohol. He'd staggered into his apartment, making a beeline for his bedroom. Ethan needs to write, or at least map out a melody for a tune that's swimming around in his head. He's a drummer by nature, rhythms are practically ingrained in his identity, but this melody is so salient in his mind that he has no choice but to get it out.
'There's a reason why I never returned your calls I wish I could forget it all But I never returned your calls 'Cause I'd fall in again'
He hums as he mixes various chords. The electronic ring of the Casio comforting his dissociated haze. Seeing her has brought it all back, the fear. Ethan needs her out of his system and the best way to dispel her lingering legacy is through his lyrics. He won't sing them because he's not a singer, he can't slur notes together smoothly the way Griffin can, his pronunciation is not as seductive or as nice to listen to. Ethan carries the tune. Pulling out his phone from the back pocket of his jeans, Ethan records the succession of chords he's just haphazardly composed.
G. C. G. C. D. C.
It's lighthearted, it sounds like a synth-pop song that his mother would hum in the car as she drove him and his brother to football practice. The chords are simple and memorable, but his lyrics need to explain what he's feeling. How he has felt.
'Don't talk I'd have run to kiss your mouth Is it me Or just a dream that never dies?'
The words are forming effortlessly, flowing into one another without much of a struggle. Ethan reminds himself that he is very drunk and it is very likely that this sounds really awful, but he keeps going, somehow recording a few verses and the skeletons of a bridge. He likes it. He'd listen to it if it was being played on the radio, maybe he'd even turn it up. Manny could work wonder with some kind of synth-riff melody hybrids he conjures up when they rehearse. Griff could add some quirkiness with his performance, maybe changing up the melody a little to suit his voice. Ethan plays the recording back to himself, cringing at how bare his voice sounds. It's raspy and sonorous, but the melody is clear and is catchy. He taps out a beat on his legs, imagining the song post-production. He closes his eyes, trying his best to picture the band onstage, seeing the faces of thousands of enthused fans belting the lyrics he's just written. The music video would have to be eighties inspired, perhaps they could hire some dancers or something or film it in a proper studio.
He's tempted to crawl to his drum set that currently lives in his living room. He wants to play on top of the recording, hear it properly. Ethan's limbs are too heavy, his body weak with tequila and guilt. How was he to know that Y/N actually liked him? Jesus, he is stupid. Ethan wants to apologise to her but he knows that would make him look bad, desperate even. As if sliding back into her text messages to say sorry for pretending their little rendezvous didn't happen would somehow make her want him again. Sorry is a great word, but it only goes so far.
Ethan must have fallen asleep at the keyboard. He wakes the next morning to light streaming through his opened blinds. Head pounding, nausea pulsing through him. He needs water and an aspirin.
This song is a fucking bop.
------
O C T O B E R  2 0 1 9
She's gorgeous. Otherworldly in the misty blue lights of the stage. She looks back at Maria, watching the brunette hits out a count of four with her sticks. Sara strums a chord, enticing the audience into the introduction of their song; a twang of the guitar and a heavy beat. On each accent, she throws her head back, her grin lighting up her face. The lights change colour to dusty pink, framing the girls and encapturing their beauty. Everyone has been sucked into their world, desperate to live in it.
Y/N presses her lips to the mic, tucking her hair behind her ear to keep it from her eyes. She glances at the people lining the front of the stage, smirking knowingly. She has them wrapped around her finger. On the cue of her voice, the beat drops. Maria pushes on with the pounding rhythm, hypnotizing and sharp. Sara quickly plucks a riff that has even Manny cheering.
'No Please don't cry I've never done this before Drove a million miles'
She's breathing melodically as if music pours from her soul. Y/N doesn't even look like she's trying, hitting every punch of the beat with her body. Swaying side to side as she fills the auditorium with high tempo melancholy. Ethan is so in awe of her. He wants her presence, wants to be that good of a performer. He's jealous of Maria's ability to keep perfect time, even as they play live. He wants to play the bass guitar with Sara's dexterity and verve. He wants Y/N.
'If I could change your mind I would hit the ground running It took time to realize And I never saw it coming Forgive my lying eyes Gonna give you all or nothing If I could change your mind I could make you mine, make you mine'
It's a great song. Like Grayson had mentioned earlier, it's not one he recognises. However, as he looks out into the mismatched faces of the audience, he notices that the majority of them seem to know the words. People are singing along, screaming and dancing. He wonders if his mother is enjoying, if Cameron is impressed. He certainly is.
"They're good, E," Grayson yells over the amps from behind him. "I know." "I wonder if this one's about you."
He does not have to turn around to see the smirk on his brother's face. This song is not about him, Y/N would never immortalise him in music. He's not great enough. There’s nothing to say that Maria or Sara did not write this song, it’s not exactly explicit. This song has a deep sentimental value to someone, his relationship (if it can even be called that) with Y/N is not one of deep sentimental value. Yes, it’s the main cause of all his daydreams - but it’s not love. He loves the idea of being in love with her, reckons he probably could fall in love with her within a few days. It’s utterly terrifying when it’s put into practice.
She turns to the wings, grinning at Manny who is bopping fiercely along to the tune. It’s as if the world presses the fastforward button on its remote when her eyes meet his. Everything rapidly speeds up, it’s almost headache-inducing. She’s narrowed her glitter-lined eyes gently, as if to focus on his features, to gauge whether or not he’s enjoying her performance. Y/N brings the mic to her lips, juts out her hip and sings to him. Regardless of whether or not the song was written about him or even written by her, this bit stings;
‘But if I was to say I regret it Would it mean a thing?’
Battles in the music world are dangerous, in the same way they are common. Battles in the music world with unexplored and unfinished feelings are incredibly perilous, in the same way they are uncommon. Ethan takes a deep breath.
------------
Hello! Long time no see! I’ve been so confused recently, but I was inspired by the lovely @ethanhes‘ post of a sort of band-inspired collage. I hope you guys like this! I’ve used Blossoms and HAIM’s music for each band, I just really love the vibe of the music and the lyrics seemed too appropriate! Lots of love x

concert: Alexandra Savior
On a steamy basement stage at Café Du Nord in San Francisco, Alexandra Savior’s show was a spooky and sultry Valentine’s Day romp. In the heart of the Castro district, the night was an expressly intimate venue, date, and aesthetic.
After an excited line outside the venue, the sold-out audience filed down a staircase to view a classic bar, blue curtains, and bright red neon Café Du Nord sign over the stage. The friendly, if a little tipsy, crowd included romantic partners, friends, and a wide range of ages freely chatting before the opening act, Al Harper, took the stage at 9pm. After their performance, the buzzing room was treated to Valentine’s cards in the intervening break as communal anticipation set in.
Featuring a haunting bass and synth combination, Alexandra Savior took the stage a little after 10, and immediately set the tone for her show opening with “Vanishing Point” from her 2017 record “Belladonna of Sadness.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The twenty-four-year-old Portland, Oregon native fronted a five-piece band with bright blue eyeshadow, drooping doll-like mascara lines, and black hearts painted on her cheeks. The theatricality of her look extended to the sometimes-comedic quality of her performance in “Shades” from the same album.
With a sardonic “Happy Halloween!” to the crowd, Savior introduced “Howl” from her 2020 album “The Archer.” The song featured an instrument change from lead guitarist Mel Guéreson to a violin, which would routinely be utilized throughout the night, adding to the self-described “feminist angst horror film feel” Savior commits to. “Mirage” included a lyrical call out to the painted-on teardrops, or tonight hearts, Savior characteristically adds to her bright pink cheeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a dazed theatricality to Alexandra Savior’s entire band, allowing them to avoid the too-cool attitude of similar artistic sad-girl pop acts. This allows them to stand out, but it is not an affectation or a front, the music truly backs up every inch of their performative quality. In “Saving Grace,” keyboard and synth player Lily Breshears’ lilting backing vocals dreamily mixed with Savior’s over a driving bass line, and her upbeat synth and keyboard combination in “Can’t Help Myself” continued the other-worldly fun tone of the night. Guéreson’s guitar and drums by Alex Fitch brought together the bridge of “Crying All The Time” to make the despair anthem a rallying cry for the singles in the room. The unsung hero of the night? Bassist Theo Craig, who’s prominently featured basslines belie the harsher, angrier, and gleeful undertones of Savior’s songs. Blink and you might miss the edge to her often soothing and sweet vocal quality, but her caustic lyrics break down expectations of a soft response from women in “Audeline,” “The Archer,” and many others during the night.
In her dreamiest and most popular single, “Girlie,” Savior revamped every middle-school slow dance to take on the indifference toward and exploitation of women in the music industry, before transitioning into “But You.” Ending with her creepiest bop, “Mystery Girl,” Savior culminated with the best breakdown of the night successfully blending a ghostly keyboard motif, a hard rock guitar line, and an anguished cry of “Don’t you try to calm me down!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sweltering heat broke down any chances for an encore, but the crowd hummed as concert goers filed up the stairs, out of the basement, and on to less eerie portions of their Valentine’s weekend.

Untamed Winter Fest Day 13: Family
Wherein Lan Xichen experiences his very first Jiang Holiday Extravaganza. (Also on Ao3).
“You’re just--you’re just going to bring him? To Lotus Pier? Just like that? You don’t want to maybe wait until next year? Are you---are you sure he can handle it?”
Jiang Cheng stared at his brother over their lunch table.
Wei Ying rubbed his nose and shrugged. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s not about Xichen. You know I love him, and you with him. You two together. But you also know how your mom is this time of year. You know the Lans don’t celebrate Christmas. Even with their basic knowledge of it, there’s having to dodge all the red bows and garlands and santas in the store and then there’s Lotus Pier at Christmas. It’s a neon animatronic freak show that punches you in the face, steals your pride and your lunch money, and then dropkicks you once more for good measure with the holiday spirit.”
“She’s not that bad,” he said.
His mother was enthusiastic about Christmas, perhaps aggressively so to some degree, but she could be reasoned with--bartered with at the very least. The singing stuffed cats in place of the musical nativity set that played ‘What Child Is This?’ for example. Stuffed animals in place of the actual lambs she was tempted to buy for little Yuan’s first holiday season with them. Mistletoe only placed on the main pathways of the house and not every five feet. She could make compromises when met with better offers or a convincing argument.
Few things in this world made his mother truly giddy, but something about Christmas did, and they’d all grown up indulging her. Granted it had turned their mother into a bit of Holly Jolly Yuletide Monster, but that meant she could be easily distracted by anything that lit-up and played a Christmas carol.
“We both have two full weeks off. Two full weeks we intend to spend together,” Jiang Cheng said. “So, it was either deal with Mom’s increasingly dramatic speeches about me abandoning the family and our traditions because of my demands over Thanksgiving or drag Xichen to Lotus Pier, slap a Santa hat on his head, and tell him to keep calm and merry on.”
Wei Ying whistled low.
"What?" Jiang Cheng demanded.
“Nothing," Wei Ying said, fidgeting with his napkin. "Just, you might want to ask Mingjue if you can borrow some of his homemade brew. Xichen might need it to get through the next two weeks. Does he know almost all of the Jiangs and the Yus will be there? To stare at him? The only person you’ve ever brought home for the holidays?”
“They’ll only all be there for Christmas Eve and Day. And New Year’s. The rest of the time they’re at their own homes,” Jiang Cheng said.
He had, in fact, kept that small, truly insignificant detail from Xichen. Even combined the Jiangs and Yus couldn’t hold a candle to the seemingly unending amount of Lans. The biggest difference was, well, the Yus were loudly opinionated and unafraid to show it and the Jiangs were either like Yanli or like...him.
“He’ll be fine,” he said, more to himself than Wei Ying. Xichen was charming. All he had to do was nod and smile and he’d win most of the family over.
His brother scoffed. “Better ask Mingjue for two bottles of that home brew.”
Wei Ying absolutely deserved to get Jiang Cheng’s napkin thrown at him, but he also had a point.
He’d call Mingjue as soon as lunch was over.
**********
“Zhan,” Lan Xichen said in surprise at finding his little brother in his kitchen. “I wasn’t expecting you today.”
“Yuan wanted to visit Jingyi,” he explained. He finished rearranging Xichen’s orchids, like he always did when he visited. “And I came to prepare you.”
“Prepare me?” Xichen asked in confusion. “Prepare me for what?"
Zhan pulled a dvd case out of his coat pocket and handed it to him.
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” Xichen read out the title. “What’s this?”
“While done for comedic effect, of all the general holiday films out there, I felt this was the one that would best prepare you for Christmas at Lotus Pier. Once it’s done there is a series, I believe called Crazy Christmas Lights, that we will also watch for your preparation.”
His brother could be hilariously funny and sarcastic when he was in a mood, but this was not a joke. His face and eyes both showed that he was completely serious.
“It can’t be that bad,” he said even as he followed Zhan into the living room.
His brother shook his head. “That’s what I thought. And then I saw the polar bears.”
“The what?” Xichen asked.
“They sing and play instruments, like those bears at Disney World,” Zhan said.
Lan Xichen froze in place. “Madame Yu has her own Christmas version of the Country Bears Jamboree?” he asked.
“Polar bears,” Zhan corrected as he took the dvd case from Xichen’s lax grip.
**********
The drive had been long. The boat trip had been uneventful. Lotus Pier remained one of the most beautiful places Jiang Cheng had ever seen in his life as long as he didn't look at their backyard. Xichen still hadn’t started a running sprint towards the ocean to escape, so Jiang Cheng felt that so far it could all be counted as a success.
“Baby, you need to breathe,” he said once he’d parked the car.
“Is this the right time to mention your mother terrifies more than any person or thing I’ve ever encountered in my life,” Xichen said, clutching Pepper’s carrier in his lap.
“That’s just your natural sense of survival,” Jiang Cheng said. “It’s my cousins you really have to be careful around.”
No one could prove that Yu Jinzhu and Yu Yinzhu were professional assassins, but no one could disprove it either. It was one of Wei Ying’s more sensible conspiracy theories.
He leaned across the seat and kissed Xichen’s forehead. “Besides, my mother likes you. Even more, she likes and approves of you. You’re going to be fine.”
“Right, of course,” Xichen said, nodding. He still had a white-knuckle hold on Pepper’s carrier and the fabric was reaching its breaking point.
Jiang Cheng put his hands over Xichen’s own and held them there until Xichen’s entire body relaxed.
“Okay?” he asked.
Xichen nodded again. “Should I also mention I can’t stand your father?”
“Hey,” Jiang Cheng said with a true smile. “That makes two of us.”
Xichen did not laugh. Instead his eyes narrowed as he took in the backyard. “Is that...is that an inflatable Santa and his sleigh and reindeer?”
Jiang Cheng took a deep breath.
“So, here’s the thing,” he said as he unlocked the car doors. “Mom has a bit of a collection.”
**********
There was a tiny elf sitting on the mantle of the fireplace in their bedroom. Logically Xichen knew it was a toy or decorative object and its eyes couldn’t possibly be following him and yet he wondered if Jiang Cheng would be horribly insulted if he hid it in the back of their wardrobe.
“Oh fuck,” Jiang Cheng said as he came into the room . “That fucking creepy ass thing. I thought I got rid of them all already. Where the fuck did this one come from?”
He picked it up and marched across the hall to Wei Ying and Zhan’s room, opening the door wide enough to toss it in.
“No, no, hell no,” Wei Ying said opening the door again, hair and clothes a mess.
“Already?” Jiang Cheng asked. “We’ve only been here for an hour.”
“Yeah? Come back with that judgy face once you have a kid to take care of. You’ll grab any second alone you can get too.” He shoved the elf into Jiang Cheng’s chest. “You take the fucking creepy ass elf. I’ve already cleared this room out. No more. I’m not getting murdered in my sleep.”
“It’s not staying in my room,” Jiang Cheng said.
Both brothers fell silent and then turned their heads to the other bedroom on their floor.
“Yanli will kill us,” Jiang Cheng said.
“Yeah, but imagine the Peacock’s screams,” Wei Ying said. He gripped Jiang Cheng’s shoulder. “This is your mission, should you choose to accept it.”
“If I go down, I’m taking you with me,” Jiang Cheng said, already headed towards his sister’s bedroom.
“A worthy death,” Wei Ying said, before slamming his door.
Xichen was on vacation. He was not going to play Academy Headmaster to a group of thirty-somethings. He was going to pretend he hadn’t witnessed the last fifteen minutes. He was going to disavow any knowledge of what just occurred. He was absolutely not going to get on Yanli’s bad side. Or Madame Yu’s.
He continued his unpacking, a task interrupted by the eyes he felt on him earlier, and went over to the wardrobe.
“What the fuck!”
The words were out of his mouth before he even processed it. Jiang Cheng came running back into the room.
“Baby?” he asked.
“Why?” Xichen asked. “Why are there more elves?”
This one was sitting on the top shelf of the wardrobe staring down at him. Looking at him as if he knew Xichen disliked him. It. The decorative object that could not possibly have thoughts or feelings of any kind.
“I am so sorry,” Jiang Cheng said, grabbing it and tossing it towards the hall. “I had no idea she’d acquired more.”
“How many are there?” he asked.
Jiang Cheng cupped his cheek. “I love you,” he said.
“How many?” Xichen asked.
“I love you, so much,” Jiang Cheng said.
“How. Many.”
“With all that’s in me,” he continued.
“Jiang Cheng.”
“There’s probably sixty now,” he said. “She makes it into a scavenger hunt for the kids.”
It was only Saturday. He’d been here for less than two hours. He already felt like he was losing his mind.
He was never ignoring his brother’s warnings again.
“For the record, I deeply wish we were in Maine right now,” he said.
“Yes,” Jiang Cheng agreed.
He wrapped his arms around his boyfriend. “And while I have no regrets about coming here, I can’t promise all of your mother’s horrid little elf creatures will survive this weekend.”
“We’ll blame it on Sugar,” he said.
“And I love you,” Xichen said. “Even if I’m not entirely sure my sanity will survive this weekend either.”
“You’re not afraid of penguins too are you?” he asked.
Xichen laughed. “No, no, of course not.”
Jiang Cheng hugged him tighter. “You’ll be just fine.”
“What does that mean?” he asked, suddenly not feeling fine at all.
“Nothing,” Jiang Cheng said, too quickly. “Nothing at all. Just a little thing out by the tennis court that’s of no concern.”
Xichen took a deep breath, leaning even more on Jiang Cheng, and reminding himself that this is what it meant to be family, to share each other’s traditions. Even if they came with horribly clashing colors and tacky inflatable lawn decor and creepy elves and a Christmas tree in their room covered in bear ornaments. He still had two full weeks of Jiang Cheng in his arms and Sugar, Pepper, and Nutmeg close to him. With his own brother and his nephew. A few tacky lights and the overpowering smell of peppermint everywhere was a small price to pay for such a gift.
He opened his eyes and found one of those creepy ass elves on top of curtain rod.
“My love, I’m going to need you to sweep this room again, because I just found another one.”
“Fuck,” Jiang Cheng said as he turned around and walked over to the window. “How in the hell did she even--she stuck Velcro on it? What in the hell?”

Thomas Csorba’s “Heartache After Heartache” is About the Buoyancy of Love
Tumblr media
"Heartache After Heartache," the latest from Dallas native Thomas Csorba, is about the buoyancy of love. It captures that emotion that’s common to all lovers which pulls us forward through both pain and honesty. Yet the song also relates to the realities of everyday perseverance —, accepting what is put in front of us and toiling through. So, if your heart is aching for any of the myriad of reasons these troubled times provide, this second single from Thomas Csorba's upcoming self-titled release, could be the sonic comfort food you are seeking, "making us stronger every single day."
Thomas has a knowing, graveling voice that feels wise — the type of wisdom earned through a life of trials and tribulations. That’s why it’s surprising to learn he’s only 23, and that the video accompaniment for "Heartache After Heartache," was shot in his neighborhood and not dug out of a dusty family archive from decades ago. Backed by the band Texas Gentlemen, it is immediately evident that Thomas is a songwriter comfortable in a lineage that celebrates the American experience, or maybe even one who revels in a nostalgia for the everyday that singing poets such as Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash embodied.
Penned alongside his friend and producer, Beau Bedford, the rhythms and instrumentation pull the listener into a Hopperesque world of late nights, long drives and quiet conversations., Steel pedal guitars washing the song to all the right places and, we can't wait to dig into the album in full.
"Heartache After Heartache" will be going into our late night repertoire, along with metaphorical hot coffee, a slice of pie, and the warm fuzz of a neon sign saying we are open to great music 24/7.

+ detail your greatest source of strength
it’s been years since junho was in nevada, but he still remembers the man like he’d just seen him the day before.
a middle aged white man, probably in his late fifties when junho had studied in henderson. it was his music teacher, the man whom used music as his vessel for establishing such a strong relationship between himself and the seventeen year old korean exchange student, kwon junho; a very different junho from the one in xlnc today — he was far tanner back then, thanks to the consistently sweltering desert sun native vegans had long accepted beforehand. he was much shyer, and his lack of being able to communicate well his first few weeks of the semester left him feeling isolated, depressed, anxious that he would spend his entire year alone.
not until there’s mr. sanders, who gives junho hope, gives him a chance.
he doesn’t realize the talent junho wields until he stays for music club after school. his voice as a high schooler was nowhere near as refined as it is now, less confident and stable. but there’s a lot of power that high school junho doesn’t realize he harnesses until mr. sanders coaches him through his vocal struggles. the two bond easily over music, the older man offering his pupil as many of his cds from his collection as junho desired to borrow. a man shaped greatly by his childhood build upon the united states’ involvement in vietnam, junho quickly finds his musical world expanding far greater than he’d ever imagined. for a long time he doesn’t quite comprehend all of the lyrics on their first listens; he concentrates more on the melodies and the actual sounds of the artists’ voices melded with their instruments than focusing too much on the meanings of what they were trying to express. mr. sanders tells him plenty, through words slow and simple, enough for junho to grasp in his earlier months. he can’t understanding his stories fully at first, slowly connecting the dots of the keywords that he uses to help fit the puzzle together: vietnam — army — protest — arrest. at the end of the year junho understands the man’s history, a college music student who’d been part of a large majority of his country who refused to condemn to acts of unjustified violence.
the memorabilia of the time that adorns his classroom, anti-war propaganda painted with large bubbly fonts and skeletons of uncle sam demanding to BRING THE TROOPS HOME with littered peace sign decorations paint an even bigger picture.
“i suggest you visit some concerts while you’re here,” mr. sanders says, “las vegas certainly is the place for them.”
and so he does. he blinds himself with the lights that illuminate the strip, a city that truly never does sleep. vegas is in a world of its own compared to busan, how one could even begin to understand the wonders of the world never leaving home baffles him seeing the city of sin in all its neon, unadultered and unforgiving life completely beyond his comprehension. it blows his mind to have so much entertainment at his fingertips; a new concert every weekend, a new bar to visit with his stunning fake id, a few three am wedding receptions to inconspicuously crash with his friends when the bride and groom were too far gone to notice.
the killers, his first concert in vegas, introduces him to the world of the heartland rock genre, which later influences his love for springsteen and tom petty, and expanding further into the rock genre.
mr. sanders teaches him more than just music, he teaches him the love and passion for it; the drive to become not just someone who can play music but can also create it, craft it, make it his own — it resonates with junho even when he returns from the united states a year later, clearly changed. his taste of westernization to his personality doesn’t sit well with his parents at first, unamused by their sons’ incomprehensible choice of music he chooses to listen to over studying. they blame it all on his dropping grades, his lack of communication, his desire to be... well, anything in life. besides a rockstar, of course.
even well past his debut, junho’s parents still don’t approve. they don’t call. he can only remember a few times counting on a single hand the number of times he’d talked to either of his parents while he was a trainee — though he couldn’t actually recall what those conversations had been about. the lack of communication between himself and his family, junho realized as he began to grow older, grew out of his rookie days into a somewhat matured musician, was a far greater good than evil.
so when most people ask him this question and expect him to say something about his parents, his unique backstory speaks for itself. “i haven’t seen or spoken to my music teacher since i left the states, no,” he admits during an interview after speaking of his teacher’s personal legacy to him, a genuinely sad response ushering in an even sadder smile. he wonders if mr. sanders is in good health, if he’s still teaching music at his high school. the thought of ever having the opportunity to reunite with the man who had kindled his passion to be where he is now, speaking to an interviewer alongside his bandmates and explaining where his roots began, would be nothing short of incredible.
“u-uhm, mr. sanders, it’s me, kwon junho,” his english is unscripted as the interviewer encourages him to make a short message to his old high school teacher in the possible hopes some american fans watching might try to pass it on — that was the beauty of having such a strong international fanbase, despite the group’s lack of domestic popularity. though despite having only spent a year in nevada, his immersion paid off even to this day with how surprisingly sharp junho had worked to keep up with his english skills. in his own ears, as he always felt with his music and everything else he did in his life, junho was sure his english must have had to deterioate over the years, his pronunciation, his vocabulary, the works — but the fan response he always garnered in the rare moments he used it on camera always told him otherwise. “thank you for your motivation helping me in high school. back then, i was really scared,” he holds the mic up closer to his mouth and pauses, straining to think of what else to say. “you really helped me to... not feel afraid.” he laughs, knowing it sounds cheesy. “if we can meet again, someday in the future, it would make me the happiest.” he nods his head as the rest of the group smiles and pats his back with appraisal upon his english. he smiles sheepishly, passing the mic to the next member as the interviewer moves onto the next member.
he curls his middle and ring fingers to meet his thumb, pointer and pinky sticking out to form devil horns. an ode to a rock legend who never gave up on him.
rock on, mr. sanders.
