1999 London nail bombings
The 1999 London nail bombings were a series of bomb explosions in London, England. Over three successive weekends between 17 and 30 April 1999, homemade nail bombs were detonated respectively in Brixton in South London; at Brick Lane, Spitalfields, in the East End; and at The Admiral Duncan pub in Soho in the West End. Each bomb contained up to 1,500 4-inch (100 mm) nails, in holdalls that were left in public spaces. The bombs killed three people and injured 140 people, four of whom lost limbs.
On 2 May 1999, the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch charged 22-year-old David Copeland with murder. Copeland, who became known as the "London nail bomber", was a Neo-Nazi militant and a former member of two political groups, the British National Party and then the National Socialist Movement. The bombings were aimed at London's black, Bengali and LGBT communities. Copeland was convicted of murder in 2000 and given six life sentences.

In this piece, renowned neo-Dada digital collagist Bealey brings their unconventional medium of choice to an all time high. This crescendo of the digital form explores how materiality can exist at the digital level; by using cut-out images of different styles and from different cultures, Bealey used the form effectively to create a chaotic, yet somewhat baroque, visual story. Additionally, Bealey explored how 'found objects' can be incorporated into digital art. By using stock images and free-use pre-made art, Bealey transforms a photograph into a journey through Europe.
Bealey also uses the piece to explore some deeper themes. The London location featured in the background, The Box Soho, is familiar to the British viewer yet the exclusive location remains still just-out-of-reach. This is combined with the images of celebrities; they are cut-out and from Belgium, artificially placed in this setting by Bealey's hand. The effect is somewhat alienating and distant. The use of river and signs furthers this, contrasting with the warm seating and tables to imbue us with a sense of uncertainty; are we staying, or going? Travelling, or partying?
The final, and most important theme explored by Bealey is gender. The piece, although chaotic, draws a clear sightline to the 6 figures at the centre. The 3 male figures, De Romeo's, have been deliberately placed next to two sign-post poles. A Freudian reading would immediately grasp the phallic connotations, as well as those of the oarfish shown through the piece.
Contrasting De Romeo's are K3, the 3 women on the right hand side of the piece. They are, significantly, separated from their male counterparts by a cascade of water descending from the heavens: a bucket. This water symbolises life, fertility, and the liquid, flexible line which separates AFAB and AMAB people into two artificial, preposterous categories; thus the ridiculousness of the piece acts as a facade to ridicule the modern Western concept of the gender binary.
The water could also been seen through a feminist lens, representing lust and feminine sexuality. As the women find power over themselves they cause floods, both literally and metaphorically. The oarfish, a phallic simulcrum of the male gender, float and fall helplessly through the water. The women have power, but at what cost? Is women's power in Western society only achievable through sex? Yet sex is what holds us to the binary.
Bealey's artwork, although unfathomably complex, leaves us with a simple question. What does it mean to exist?

Marking 25 years since the nail bomb attacks on Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho
Patrick Lilley. Photo: Adrian Zorzut, LDR. It was a warm, late April evening in 1999. The Admiral Duncan pub on Old Compton Street in Soho was filling fast. Drinkers were keen to kick off the Bank Holiday weekend. Music blared, people got lost in conversation, the bar was getting busy. Everyone was beginning to unwind after work. But unknown to them, self-confessed neo-Nazi David Copeland had…

Ileana Sonnabend (née Schapira, October 29, 1914 – October 21, 2007) was a Romanian-American art dealer of 20th-century art.
Sonnabend was born Ileana Schapira in Bucharest to a Romanian Jewish father, Mihail Schapira, and his Viennese wife, Marianne Strate-Felber. Ileana Sonnabend received a degree in psychology from Columbia University.
The Sonnabend Gallery opened in Paris in 1962 and was instrumental in making American art of the 1960s known in Europe, with an emphasis on American pop art. In 1970, Sonnabend Gallery opened in New York on Madison Avenue, and in 1971 relocated to 420 West Broadway in SoHo where it was one of the major protagonists that made SoHo the international art center it remained until the early 1990s. The gallery was instrumental in making European art of the 1970s known in America, with an emphasis on European conceptual art and Arte Povera. It also presented American conceptual and minimal art of the 1970s. In 1986, the so-called "Neo-Geo" show introduced, among others, the artist Jeff Koons. In the late 1990s, the gallery moved to Chelsea and continues to be active after Sonnabend's death. The gallery goes on showing the work of artists who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s including Robert Morris, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Gilbert & George as well as more recent artists including Jeff Koons, Rona Pondick, Candida Höfer, Elger Esser, and Clifford Ross.
After Sonnabend died in her Manhattan home in October 2007 at the age of 92, the estate tax return pegged her total worth at $876 million, triggering a $471m tax bill. Her heirs subsequently sold a portion of her postwar-art collection for $600 million—reportedly the largest private sale in history. Although the family had been in talks with the auction houses, they chose to sell parts of the collection privately because of the uncertainties surrounding the financial markets during the 2008 crisis. Setiap lewat jalan Taman Anggrek, CP, Neo Soho, Untar, Tri Sakti rasanya aku seperti bilang : “hai masa lalu, kau nampak baik-baik saja, sekarang aku menjalani kehidupan baru. Mungkin tidak semuanya lebih baik, tapi aku bergegas. Bergegas meninggalkan apa yang menjadi khawatirku dan kerisauanku dulu di setiap malam-malam gelap seerti saat ini. Alhamdulillah ‘ala kulli haal 🙂”
