The Italian Bride of Chicago

Julia Buccola Petta (1892 – March 17, 1921) was a housewife who became known following her death as The Italian Bride. She was the daughter of Filomena Buccola and the wife of Matthew Petta. She died at the age of 29 in 1921 while giving birth to a stillborn son, Filippo.

Following her death, Petta was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the Chicago, Illinois suburb of Hillside. Petta was buried in her wedding dress. According to legend, soon after Petta's death, her mother Filomena began experiencing dreams in which Petta was telling her that she was still alive. 

Six years after Petta's death, Filomena secured permission to have the grave opened and her daughter exhumed. The coffin was found to have decomposed somewhat, but when it was opened Petta's body was still mostly intact, her son and the arm holding him had decayed. Her mother took a picture of Petta in her casket, which was placed on the monument and is still there to this day. 

Why Petta's body had not decayed much following burial has never been explained.

The Grinning Man, also known as Indrid Cold, is reported to be human-like in appearance, though is commonly associated with UFO activity and is sometimes believed to be an alien. It is also believed possible that he is connected with the Men In Black.

The first sighting of the man is believed to be on 16 October 1966. When two young boys were at the Elizabeth's New Jersey, spending time together until they noticed a very tall human-like being behind the fence. Both of the boys were brave and went towards the man, trying to step closer to see the man. However, both of them started to feel fear, and realized the man had a creepy smile on his face. The man starts to look at the boys, peering at them though the fence. The boys started running away from the man until they got away. After the encounter, boys started remembering more of the the man's appearance, describing his face as having small beady eyes and no other features other than his titular grin.

November, 1966

Interestingly enough, after two weeks another man had a similar experience. On 1 November 1966, A salesman which was driving in the night to his home, he noticed weird lightning in front of him. In front of him, the salesman saw a weird-lamp looking spacecraft vehicle. The door opened up, as the man got out from the spacecraft, going towards the salesman. The man spoke to the salesman telepathically, introducing his name as "Indrid Cold". After the two had a conversation, where the man said he was an alien from a distant planet who meant no harm to the salesman, Indrid Cold said that he will visit the salesman again, as Indrid Cold entered his spacecraft and disappeared.

The salesman ended up contacting the police, trying to tell them the story, convince them that it's real. The police didn't believe the story, while the news-outlets became interested in the story. After the salesman told his story, other people went forward and told their experiences with Indrid Cold as well. The salesman also claimed that Indrid Cold brought him to his planet for six months in a far-away galaxy.

The Story Of Barbora Škrlová, the real life case that inspired the film ‘Orphan’

Klara Mauerova was born in Czechoslovakia in 1975. Since she was young she showed signs of schizophrenia, and said that she had visions like the one Joan of Arc gave her, giving her a divine task.

Ondrej and Yakub were Klara’s little kids, she was really young when she had them and the father of the boys left her after a few years later and from them the woman developed a difficult and aggressive character, leaving the little ones in a dangerous situation. Klara was an excellent mother; However, after the separation of her partner, she became really depressed because of it, so she asked her little sister to move in with her and take care of the boys together.

The sisters met Barbora Skrlová university, a 33-year-old woman who looked like a 13 girl because of a difficult disease called hypopituitarism. This woman was really skilled at manipulating, and that’s what she did with the two sisters, they became really good friends because of her tragic childhood stories, she made the sisters take her to live with them.

Years before meeting Klara and Katerina, this woman had been hospitalized for several years in a psychiatric center because she had made herself known as an orphaned child to a family that wanted to adopt her, but they realized about it and sent her to an asylum.

Without knowing this, the sisters accepted the woman in their home, but this one faced strange episodes in which she behaved like a girl and then going back to the mature woman, which she really was.

Klara, tired of the supposed misbehaviour of her children, was convinced by Barbora, to give them a severe punishment so that they could learned to not disobey them by torturing them. The sisters and the 33-year-old woman built an iron cage in the basement where they kept the boys naked with little no food for several months. The boys were beaten, malnourished and tortured, and Barbora enjoyed watching this. Luckily they were discovered by a neighbor who while trying to connect a baby monitor connected to a camera that had been set up to watch the boys.

When the police arrived the women refused to let them in, but when they went down to the basement they found one of the worst scenes they had ever seen, the two children where in the cage and in front of it was a supposedly "innocent" little girl (Barbora) crying. Barbora asked for help to the authorities and said that her name was Anika and that she was adopted by the savage women who enjoyed abusing their children. She was sent to a children's home in which she disappeared that same night.

In 2009 Barbora was found in a house of a couple who adopted her, but this time her name was Adam and who appeared to be a genius child. The family never suspected this, but they confessed that he suffered from severe attacks of depression and anxiety.��

After finding her in the house of this couple, Barbora was captured and was given a sentence of 12 years, However, she was released in 2012 and her whereabouts is now unknown.

Green Boots

The body of “Green Boots,” an Indian climber who died on Everest in 1996 and is believed to be Tsewang Paljor - although the body has not been officially identified - lies near a cave that all climbers must pass on their way to the peak. Green Boots now serves as a waypoint marker that climbers use to gauge how near they are to the summit. Green Boots met his end after becoming separated from his party. He sought refuge in a mountain overhang, but to no avail. He sat there shivering in the cold until he died.

The term Green Boots originated from the green Koflach mountaineering boots on his feet. All expeditions from the north side encounter the body curled in the limestone alcove cave at 8,500 m (27,900 ft) - very close to the summit.

The first recorded video footage of Green Boots was filmed on 21 May 2001 by French climber Pierre Paperon. In the video, Green Boots is shown lying on his left side, facing toward the summit. According to Paperon, Sherpas told him that it was the body of a Chinese mountaineer who had attempted the climb six months earlier.

Over time, the corpse became known both as a landmark on the north route and for its association with the death of David Sharp. In May 2014, Green Boots’ body was reported to be missing from view, presumably removed or buried. It reappeared, however, in 2017.

Who Is ‘Prayer Man’?

On the day of JFK’s assignation, Dave Wiegman and Jimmy Darnell, two of the news cameramen travelling in the motorcade, began filming when they heard gunshots. For several decades, the significance of their two films was thought to lie in their portrayal of the spectators along Elm Street and the cars in the motorcade. More recently, attention has been drawn to the films’ depiction of the doorway of the Texas School Book Depository, and in particular to a previously ignored figure who, according to some observers, may have been Lee Harvey Oswald. In several frames of the two black–and–white news films, a figure is visible in the western corner of the TSBD doorway. From the cameras’ point of view, the figure is standing to the left of the man in the Altgens photograph who has been identified as Billy Lovelady. The figure’s right arm appears to be raised across its chest, which has earned it the name ‘Prayer Man’. The figure is unlikely to have been praying, but it may have its arms crossed, or it may be holding an object up to its chest. Although the figure in the currently available versions of the films is insufficiently distinct to permit a definitive identification, it appears to be a white man, dressed in a loose, dark–toned shirt with an open neck and either short or rolled–up sleeves. The figure does not appear to be wearing a white shirt or a tie, as would have been customary for male office workers in the early 1960s. Its short hair and light skin tone strongly suggest that it is neither a woman nor a black man, although the lack of definition in the images does not completely rule out either possibility. The figure’s head and hairline are not inconsistent with Oswald’s appearance.

Could ‘Prayer Man’ Have Been Oswald?

Lee Oswald claimed to have been on the first floor at the time of the assassination. There is certainly very little evidence to support the official doctrine that he was on the sixth floor of the TSBD. An unreliable witness, Howard Brennan, described the gunman as looking somewhat like Oswald, and a handful of other witnesses gave vague descriptions that matched Oswald along with any number of other young, white men. On the other hand:

Every witness who described the gunman’s clothing, including Brennan, claimed that it did not match Oswald’s clothing.

Oswald was seen on a lower floor about 15 minutes before the shooting, at the same time as a spectator saw a gunman on the sixth floor.

Oswald is known to have been on the first floor, in or near the domino room, about five or ten minutes after this.

Reports in the Dallas Morning News and the New York Herald Tribune, both published on the morning after the assassination, state that Ochus Campbell, the vice–president of the TSBD company, and a policeman saw Oswald very shortly after the shooting in a “storage room on the first floor”

The currently available evidence of Oswald’s location at the time of the assassination does not preclude him from being Prayer Man.

When Marina Oswald (who has maintained her husband’s innocence) was shown by researchers pictures of the “prayer man” from the films taken by Dave Wiegman of NBC-TV and Jimmy Darnell of WBAP-TV during the assassination, an unprompted Marina told Ed LeDoux that the “Prayer Man” was Lee.

The Box Lady of Benton

It was October 8th, 1976 and Norman Skoog had spent the day harvesting his “back 40,” acres of corn along Benton County Road 200 South. Around 5pm, while harvesting in a remote spot about a mile-and-a-half from the Skoog home, he made a bizarre discovery. A white cardboard box wrapped in tape and rope sat on the ground roughly nine rows deep in the field, approximately 15 yards off of the gravel road. Norman had nearly ran over the box with his combine. When he got out to investigate the box, he realized it was far too heavy for him to lift alone. He left on his combine to get his father-in-law and his pickup. Together, they loaded the box into the bed of the truck and drove it to the Skoog home.

Curtis Skoog, 16, was first to notice the pungent odor of cheap perfume coming from within the box. Using a pocket knife, he sliced open a section of the box to find a broken vial of perfume lying atop something wrapped in layers of plastic. Concerned what may be inside, Norman phoned police. He told Curtis to return the vial to the box and wait for the Sheriff to arrive.

Sheriff Donal Steely arrived at the Skoog home a short time later to inspect the suspicious package. As he began to cut into the thick sheets of heavy plastic and rope, a new foul smell wafted out of the box. Steely decided he should contact the State Police before proceeding any further. Indiana State Police arrived and opened the box. Beneath the layers of plastic sheeting and rope, they discovered the body of a woman. The body was taken to the local coroners office, and later an autopsy was preformed in Lafayette, Indiana.

It was concluded that the woman’s cause of death was from a small calibre single gunshot wound at the base of her neck fired at close range. The bullet was never recovered. Her death was estimated to have occurred 7-10 days before being found, but it was noted that very little decomposition had occurred.

She was found in the fetal position with her knees pressed firmly against her chest. Her body was bound with rope and her hands were tied under her knees. Her head and face were wrapped in white paper towelling, and two small plastic bags had been tied over her head. Her body had been wrapped in several layers of thick plastic, similar to those used as runners to protect carpet. White clothesline style rope and heavy duty duct tape had been used to tie the plastic around the body and was so tightly bound, it had distorted and bruised the woman’s face.

The woman was white, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighed around 175 pounds, and was estimated to be around 60 years of age. The woman wore a green 2-piece pants suit that was covered in blood, but otherwise clean. She wore no makeup, shoes, pantyhose, or jewelry and had no identification. She had a few distinguishing facial features, including a large “bump” on the bridge of her nose and “abnormally large ears.”

It was evident the woman had undergone several surgeries. She had undergone a radical mastectomy, and bore a vertical surgical scar on her mid-section which extended from her sternum to her stomach. She had also undergone extensive dental work, though she was in need of more.

Her makeshift “coffin” was a white cardboard box measuring 3-by-2-by-1-foot. The box was a typical moving box, stamped with a factory label reading “wardrobe.” Another part of the box bore a handwritten notation reading “hall closet.” It was learned that the box had been manufactured in Illinois. Inside of the box, the small vial of perfume was found, however it had no label. The box itself had been sealed with tape and the same rope that was used to bind the woman. Investigators believe the box had been left at the location the same day it was found. Heavy rains had blanketed the area the previous day into the early morning hours and the box showed no signs of moisture damage.

Police attempted to use fingerprints to identify the unknown woman, however they never found a match. This led them to the conclusion she had never been arrested, or held a civil service job. A sketch of the woman was released to the public in the hopes of identifying her, however no one came forward to claim her body. Eventually, she was buried in an unmarked grave in Fowler Cemetery.

The investigation continued and several people came forward from states as far away as Alabama believing the unknown woman may be their missing loved one. Unfortunately she was not a match to any of them.

Multiple theories existed, from everything to a “mob-hit,” to a wrong place wrong time scenario. However the most bizarre, and seemingly most accepted theory, is that the box was dropped from a helicopter.

While the area the box was found is extremely rural, it is also a tight knit community of farmers who are outside from sun up to sun down. According to them, they would have noticed someone driving along the gravel road that morning, and while they didn’t spot any suspicious cars, they did see a helicopter fly over the field early that morning. According to three separate witness statements, the helicopter approached from the northeast, swung to the southwest, and hovered near the ground for a few seconds where the box was found.

A second piece of evidence supporting the helicopter theory is that when police searched the area where the box was found, they discovered an irregular circle of exposed black dirt around the dumping site. During harvest, corn stalks litter the ground covering the soil. The powerful updraft created by a helicopter could cause the stalks to scatter leaving the ground exposed and leaving a circular “imprint” like the one discovered at the scene.

The Silent Twins

June and Jennifer Gibbons were identical twins born to a Caribbean couple in 1963. The family moved to Haverfordwest, Wales, shortly after the children’s birth. From the time they learned to speak, June and Jennifer had a particular high-speed patois that made it difficult for people to understand them. Being the only black children at their school, they were frequently bullied by their peers. The bullying led to their special language becoming even more irregular, to the point where no one could understand what they said.

At 14 they were sent to separate boarding schools, to encourage them to thrive on their own. Both girls became catatonic and were quickly reunited. Following their reunion, they spent several years locked in their room, playing with dolls, putting on operas for one another, and writing.

They wrote several short stories that they self-published. The stories tend to revolve around criminality and sex. After the stories failed to garner any attention, they left the confines of their room and started living in the real world. They continued to speak with no one but each other. They started committing crimes such as arson, theft, and assaulting one another. A judge ruled that they need to be committed, and they were sent to Broadmoor Hospital, where they remained for 14 years.

In 1993 it was decided that the twins would be transferred to Caswell Clinic, a lower-security facility. When the twins arrived at Caswell, Jennifer was found to be unresponsive. She was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead. The cause of death was acute myocarditis or a sudden inflammation of the heart. No drugs or poisons were found in her system.

A few days after Jennifer’s death, June was reported to say, “I’m free at last, liberated, and at last Jennifer has given up her life for me.”

Bermuda Triangle

Over the last 500 years, ships and airplanes have gone missing inside a triangular section of the North Atlantic Ocean called the Bermuda (or Devil’s) Triangle. This mysterious area is bounded by the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda; Miama, Florida, U.S.; and the American territory of Puerto Rico.

The earliest article to reference a disappearance was in The Miami Herald in 1950. However, the “Bermuda Triangle” itself was coined by Vincent Gaddis in a 1964 article.

Since then, scientists and amateurs have floated various theories - from sea monsters to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) - but nobody has been successful in decoding the mystery. In August 2018, a Channel 5 documentary - “The Bermuda Triangle Enigma” - suggested the disappearances could be attributed to 100 feet (30 meter) tall “rogue” waves that engulf ships and planes attempting to navigate the area.

The Weird Death of Elisa Lam

For her trip to California, Lam travelled alone on Amtrak and intercity buses. She visited the San Diego Zoo and posted photos taken there on social media. On January 26, she arrived in Los Angeles. After two days, she checked into the Cecil Hotel, near downtown’s Skid Row. Lam was initially assigned a shared room on the hotel’s fifth floor; however, her roommates complained about what the hotel’s lawyer would later describe as “certain odd behavior” and Lam was moved to a room of her own after two days.

Lam had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression. She had been prescribed four medications – Wellbutrin, Lamictal, Seroquel and Effexor – to treat her disorders. According to her family, who supposedly kept her history of mental illness a secret, Lam had no history of suicidal ideations or attempts, although one report claimed she had previously gone missing for a brief period.

Lam contacted her parents in British Columbia every day while traveling. On February 1, 2013, the day she was scheduled to check out of the Cecil and leave for Santa Cruz, her parents did not hear from her and called the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD); her family flew to Los Angeles to help with the search.

Hotel staff who saw Lam that day said she was alone. Outside the hotel, Katie Orphan, manager of a nearby bookstore, was the only person who recalled seeing her that day. “She was outgoing, very lively, very friendly” while getting gifts to take home to her family.

Police searched the hotel to the extent that they legally could. They searched Lam’s room and had dogs go through the building, including the rooftop, but the dogs were unsuccessful in detecting her scent. “But we didn’t search every room,” Sgt. Rudy Lopez said later, “we could only do that if we had probable cause” to believe a crime had been committed. On February 6, a week after Lam had last been seen, the LAPD decided more help was needed. 

On February 15, after another week with no sign of Lam, the LAPD released a video of the last known sighting of her taken in one of the Cecil’s elevators by a video surveillance camera on February 1. In approximately two and a half minutes of footage, Lam, alone, makes unusual moves and gestures, leaving the elevator at one point while its doors remain open, even after she appears to have pressed every button. When the doors fail to close after she returns, she leaves; the doors close later.

The video drew worldwide interest in the case due to Lam’s strange behavior, and has been extensively analyzed and discussed. It was reposted widely, including on the Chinese video-sharing site Youku, where it got 3 million views and 40,000 comments in its first 10 days. Many of the commentators found it unsettling to watch.

Several theories evolved to explain her actions. One was that Lam was trying to get the elevator car to move in order to escape from someone who was pursuing her. Others suggested that she might be under the influence of ecstasy or some other party drug, but none was detected in her body. When her bipolar disorder became known, the theory that she was having a psychotic episode also emerged.

Other viewers argued that the video had been tampered with before being made public. Besides the obscuring of the timestamp, they claimed, parts had been slowed down and nearly a minute of footage had been removed. This could have been done to protect the identity of someone who otherwise would be in the video, either related or not to the disappearance.

During the search for Lam, guests at the hotel began complaining about low water pressure. Some later claimed their water was colored black and had an unusual taste. On the morning of February 19, Santiago Lopez, a hotel maintenance worker, found Lam’s body in one of four 1,000-gallon (3,785 L) tanks located on the roof providing water to guest rooms, a kitchen, and a coffee shop. Through the open hatch he saw Lam lying face-up in the water. The tank was drained and cut open since its maintenance hatch was too small to accommodate equipment needed to remove Lam’s body.

On February 21, the Los Angeles coroner’s office issued a finding of accidental drowning, with bipolar disorder as a significant factor. The full coroner’s report, released in June, stated that Lam’s body had been found naked;  clothing similar to what she was wearing in the elevator video was floating in the water, coated with a “sand-like particulate”. Her watch and room key were also found with her.

Lam’s body was moderately decomposed and bloated. It was mostly greenish, with some marbling evident on the abdomen and skin separation evident. There was no evidence of physical trauma, sexual assault, or suicide. Toxicology tests showed traces consistent with prescription medication found among her belongings, plus non-prescription drugs such as Sinutab and ibuprofen. A very small quantity of alcohol (about 0.02 g%) was present, but no other recreational drugs. Investigators and experts have however noted that the concentration of her prescription drugs in her system indicated that she was under-medicating or had stopped taking her medications recently.

The investigation had determined how Lam died, but did not initially offer an explanation as to how she got into the tank in the first place. Doors and stairs that access the hotel’s roof are locked, with only staff having the passcodes and keys, and any attempt to force them would supposedly have triggered an alarm. The hotel’s fire escape could have allowed her to bypass those security measures; her scent trail was lost near a window that connected to it. A video posted to the Internet after Lam’s death showed that the hotel’s roof was easily accessible via the fire escape and that two of the lids of the water tanks were open.

Apart from the question of how she got on the roof, others asked if she could have gotten into the tank by herself. All four tanks were 4-by-8-foot (1.2 by 2.4 m) cylinders propped up on concrete blocks;  there was no fixed access to them and hotel workers had to use a ladder to look at the water. They were protected by heavy lids that would be difficult to replace from within. The hotel employee who found the body said that the lid was open at the time, removing the issue of how she could have closed the lid from inside. Police dogs that searched through the hotel for Lam, even on the roof, shortly after her disappearance was noted, did not find any trace of her.

Theories arose pertaining to the elevator video. Some argued that she was attempting to hide from a pursuer, perhaps someone ultimately responsible for her death, while others said she was merely frustrated with the elevator’s apparent malfunction. Some proponents of the theory that she was under the influence of illicit drugs are not dissuaded by their absence from the toxicology screen, suggesting that they might have broken down during the period of time her body decomposed in the tank or that she might have taken rare cocktails of such drugs that a normal screen would not detect. The very low level of her prescription drugs in her system, and the amount of pills left in her prescription bottle, suggested she was under-medicating or had recently stopped taking her medication for bipolar disorder, which might have led to a psychotic episode.

The autopsy report and its conclusions were also questioned based on the incomplete information. For instance, it does not say what the results of the rape kit and fingernail kit were or even if they were processed. It also records subcutaneous pooling of blood in Lam’s anal area, which some observers suggested was a sign of sexual abuse; one pathologist noted it could also have resulted from bloating in the course of the body’s decomposition, and her rectum was also prolapsed. Even the coroner’s pathologists appeared to be ambivalent about their conclusion that Lam’s death was accidental.

Since her death, her Tumblr blog was updated, presumably through Tumblr’s Queue option that allows posts to automatically publish themselves when the user is away. Her phone was not found either with her body or in her hotel room; it has been assumed to have been stolen at some time around her death. Whether the continued updates to her blog were facilitated by the theft of her phone, the work of a hacker, or through the Queue, is not known; nor is it known whether the updates are related to her death.

The Horrific Murder of Suzanne Capper

Capper, described as "a gentle and easily influenced girl," had been babysat by Jean Powell since she was ten years old. Capper began to truant from Moston Brook High School, and her attendance during the final two years of schooling was described as "erratic." Capper increasingly spent her time at Powell's house. Powell lived at 97 Langworthy Road, Moston, a small Victorian terraced house, where she also dealt drugs and was involved with the handling of stolen motor vehicles. Michelle Capper (Suzanne’s older sister) had briefly lived with Powell, but moved out in August 1992 because she did not like the "evil new friends" Powell was associating with, particularly Bernadette McNeilly, who had recently moved in three doors away at number 91. McNeilly, who had three children, subsequently moved in with Powell and her three children, where the two shared a bed in the downstairs dining room because the bedrooms were "full of children." Capper continued to stay regularly even though Powell and McNeilly frequently bullied her. Her sister said: "It was not that she was scared of them, it's just that she would do anything for them. She pampered their every whim."  Powell was separated from her husband Glyn, although the two remained friendly and he would visit regularly from his nearby home. McNeilly's boyfriend was 16-year-old Anthony Dudson, who was also having sexual intercourse with Powell. Powell was sexually involved with Jeffrey Leigh, a regular visitor to the house as a purchaser of amphetamines. Another frequent visitor to the house was Powell's younger brother, Clifford Pook.

On 7 December 1992, Capper was lured to Jean Powell's home, where Glyn Powell and Dudson were already waiting. She was grabbed as soon as she arrived and held down while Glyn Powell shaved her head and her eyebrows and then made her clean up the hair and place it in a bin. Then he placed a plastic bag over her head and walked around her while hitting her on the head. She was then kicked by Jean Powell and McNeilly as she lay curled up on the floor and both women took turns beating her with a three-foot-long (1 m) wooden instrument and a belt. She was then taken to the bathroom and forced to shave off her own pubic hair. Afterwards Jean Powell locked her in a cupboard overnight. The following morning Capper was taken upstairs and locked in another cupboard. On 8 December she was transferred to McNeilly's house because of concern that Powell and McNeilly's six children were disturbed by Capper's crying. There she was tied spreadeagled to an upturned bed with electrical flex in a downstairs back room.

Over the next five days Capper was subjected to a series of violent acts, "increasing in severity and brutality as the time passed." She was regularly beaten and injected with amphetamines, burned with cigarettes, and had rave music—in particular "Hi, I'm Chucky (Wanna Play?)" by 150 Volts —played at maximum volume through headphones. McNeilly would commence each torture session with the phrase "Chucky's coming to play." At some point during the week, Pook and Leigh called at the house and saw Capper, blindfolded and gagged, tied to the bed. By this time, Capper had been lying in her own urine and feces for several days and was placed in a bath containing concentrated disinfectant and scrubbed with a stiff brush with sufficient force to remove skin.  Pook then used pliers to extract two of her teeth, which police later found at his house "like some kind of macabre trophy." Dudson said: "I was stood at the doorway with Jeanie [Powell] and Bernie [McNeilly]. Cliff [Pook] took her gag off. He told her to open her mouth. He said: 'Right, I'm going to rip your teeth out'. He started hitting her teeth with the pliers. He got the pliers on and started pulling it out. But it just snapped and chipped. Then he hit them a few more times. He put the pliers on again and really, really pulled. He pulled Suzanne's head forward until there was a snap and he had the tooth in the pliers. He did the same again and he was laughing."

David Hill, 18, was asked to "sit in" at the house, and while there heard Dudson shouting in the back room. When he asked what was going on, Leigh had shown him Capper. Hill could clearly see evidence of torture and was later left alone with Capper, but did not free her. He said: "She asked me if I could help, but I told her I couldn't. I asked her who she was. She said her name was Suzanne. She asked me if I could untie her. I said I couldn't do anything." Hill later claimed that he was too afraid of Leigh to intervene, saying: "I thought they would batter me. If I'd said [anything] they'd all have got me, wouldn't they? I didn't know what to do. I was too shocked to do anything." Leigh and Dudson also helped Capper's sister's fiancé, Paul Barlow, repair his car while knowing she was being held and tortured in the house. Barlow said: "They could have told me there and then. The door would have been kicked down and I would have got Suzanne out. I did not think they were capable of such savagery. Now all I want is ten minutes with them in a back room."

The six primary attackers heard that Capper's family was going to report her as a missing person, and so agreed that Capper had to be removed from the house. In the early hours of 14 December 1992, Capper was forced into the boot of a stolen white Fiat Panda car and driven 15 miles (25 km) to a narrow lane at Werneth Low, near Romiley, on the outskirts of Stockport. In the car were McNeilly, the Powells and Dudson. McNeilly "giggled" as they made the journey. Powell later said that Capper was pushed down an embankment, into a patch of brambles, where McNeilly poured petrol over her. When McNeilly had difficulty getting the petrol to ignite, Glyn Powell and Dudson made multiple attempts before lighting the girl's body on fire. McNeilly began to sing "Burn baby burn! Burn baby burn!" from The Trammps song "Disco Inferno." Believing Capper to be dead, the four returned to Jean Powell's house, stopping to buy canned drinks on the way.

After her attackers left, Capper managed to scramble back up the embankment and stagger along the lane for approximately a quarter of a mile (400 metres) to Compstall Road, despite extensive burns. She was found at 06:10 by Barry Sutcliffe and two of his colleagues on their way to work. They immediately took her to a nearby house and roused the residents, Michael and Margaret Coop, to call for an ambulance.  Michael Coop said: "Both her hands appeared like ash. Her legs were just like raw meat and her feet appeared to be badly charred. I was struck by how polite the victim was. She was constantly thanking my wife for her assistance." Margaret Coop said: "I instinctively went to put my arms around her but she pulled away because she could not bear to be touched. Her head was shaved and there were recent, not new, cuts to her head. Her face was almost featureless. Her hands were red raw and black at the fingertips. Her legs were red from top to bottom. She couldn't bear anything near her legs." Capper drank six glasses of water, but was unable to hold the glass herself because of the injuries to her hands. Capper was rushed to the hospital and was able to give the names of her six assailants, as well as Powell's address, before falling into a coma. The extent of her burns was such that her mother and stepfather were unable to recognize her, and she was positively identified by a partial fingerprint from her thumb, the only part of her hands not severely burned. She died on 18 December 1992, without regaining consciousness.

The Greensburg 6

The Greensburg 6 consisted of the victim, Jennifer Lee Daugherty’s six friends whom she had recently befriended at a community center in Greensburg, ten miles away from her home. Being mentally disabled with the mental capacity of a 14-year-old, it was not easy for Jennifer Daugherty to make friends. So, when her family saw that she had friends she regularly visited in Greensburg, they were ecstatic.

Living in the same apartment, there was Angela Marinucci, who was the youngest at 17 years old, and Ricky Smyrnes, 23. Both of them were in a relationship with each other. Then there was the 20-year-old Amber Meidinger, pregnant with Melvin Knight’s baby, who was the same age as Meidinger. Peggy Darlene Miller, 27, and Robert Masters, 36, also lived with them in the same place.

Whenever Jennifer used to hang out with all of them, Angela Marinucci noticed her boyfriend used to flirt with Jennifer. She also had, reportedly, overheard her boyfriend talking to Jennifer on the phone and proclaiming his love for her. This caused Marinucci a great deal of jealousy and insecurity. After taking Amber into confidence, she devised the whole plan against Jennifer and included the rest of the housemates in it as well.

Ricky Smyrnes was also a part of the torture and killing of Jennifer Daugherty. However, during the confessional tapes played in the courts amidst their trials, Smyrnes told the police that he had loved Jennifer, and she loved him too. She used to ride the bus to their apartment to meet him only. He only took part in the plan against her because he was afraid Angela would’ve killed him.

On February 10th, 2010, Jennifer Daugherty told her parents that she planned on going to her friends’ apartment in Greensburg for a sleepover that day. Her stepfather, Bobby Murphy, dropped her off at the bus stop from where she traveled to Greensburg on a bus. She had left a note for her mother that said, “I hope that you will have a good day at work, and I also love you very much”. These words came to be the last words she said to her mother.

As soon as Jennifer entered the apartment, things took a horrific turn for Jennifer. She was beaten with a metal towel rack, a crutch, and the hose of a vacuum cleaner. Her hair was shaved, and her face was covered in nail polish. Cruelly, Jennifer was forced to consume her own urine and feces. She was also forced to drink detergent and liters of vegetable oil. They had repeatedly stomped on her chest and stomach. Moreover, she was given sleeping pills and antibiotics in massive amounts as well.

According to Amber, Jennifer was stripped naked, gagged, and raped by Melvin Knight. She was then taken to the living room, where spices and oatmeal were poured onto her. She had begged her ‘friends’ to stop because she was in pain and her eyes were burning, but the group ignored her pleas.

Jennifer had begged them to let her go as night descended, but that is where the group decided that they will kill her as they couldn’t risk their safety.

The group forced her to write her suicide note before slashing her wrists. Jennifer was also stabbed in the chest and lungs by Knight. In his confessional tape, Melvin Knight stated that,

“Ricky got a knife and told me to stab her…and then I stabbed her in the chest three times.”

Then they wrapped Jennifer’s battered body in Christmas lights, who was barely alive. Then Smyrnes, Knight, and Masters choked her with the Christmas lights wrapped around her neck. Afterward, the group stuffed her body in a plastic garbage can and left it under a truck in the snow-covered parking lot of Greensburg Salem Middle School. On February 11th, her body was discovered by the Truck Driver, who had noticed something under his truck.

Angela Marinucci was decided by the court to be the main instigator of the entire ordeal against Jennifer Daughtery. Since she was 17 when the murder happened, so she did not qualify for the death penalty. She was, however, given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Ricky Smyrnes and Melvin Knight were sentenced to death after Knight’s confession. It is also reported that while hearing his confession tape being played in the courtroom, Knight had laughed out loud in the court. He pleaded guilty to Jennifer’s first and second-degree murder, her kidnapping, and conspiracy to murder.

Robert Masters was sentenced to 30 to 70 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and abduction. Amber Meindinger pleaded guilty to the same offenses but received a sentence of 40 to 80 years in prison. Peggy Darlene Miller received a sentence of 35 to74 years in prison.

It is reported that the Prosecution was seeking a death sentence for Knight, Smyrnes, and Meindinger, but Meindinger didn’t receive a death sentence after she decided to plead guilty in court.

The police did not accuse Masters and Miller of participating in the entire act of torture and murder of Jennifer. However, the evidence from the confessional tapes suggests that they were part of the meetings in which the whole ordeal was planned. They had also voted for Jennifer to be murdered.

Philadelphia Experiment, UFOS?

According to legend, on Oct. 28, 1943, the USS Eldridge, a Cannon-class destroyer escort, was conducting top-secret experiments designed to win command of the oceans against the Axis powers. The rumor was that the government was creating technology that would render naval ships invisible to enemy radar, and there in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, it was time to test it out.

Witnesses claim an eerie green-blue glow surrounded the hull of the ship as her generators spun up and then, suddenly, the Eldridge disappeared. The ship was then seen in Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia before disappearing again and reappearing back in Philadelphia.

The legend states that classified military documents reported that the Eldridge crew were affected by the events in disturbing ways. Some went insane. Others developed mysterious illness. But others still were said to have been fused together with the ship; still alive, but with limbs sealed to the metal.

Carl M. Allen, who went by the pseudonym, Carlos Miguel Allende. In 1956, Allende sent a series of letters to Morris K. Jessup, author of the book, “The Case for the UFO,” in which he argued that unidentified flying objects merit further study.

Jessup apparently included text about unified field theory because this is what Allende latched onto for his correspondences. In the 1950s, unified field theory, which has never been proven, attempted to merge Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity with electromagnetism. In fact, Allende claimed to have been taught by Einstein himself and could prove the unified field theory based on events he witnessed on Oct. 28, 1943.

Allende claimed that he saw the Eldridge disappear from the Philadelphia Naval Yard, and he further insisted that the United States military had conducted what he called the Philadelphia Experiment — and was trying to cover it up.

Jessup was then contacted by the Navy's Office of Naval Research, which had received a package containing Jessup's book with annotations claiming that extra-terrestrial technology allowed the U.S. government to make breakthroughs in unified field theory.

This is one of the weirdest details. The annotations were designed to look like they were written by three different authors -- one maybe extra-terrestrial? According to Vallee's article for the Journal of Scientific Exploration, Jessup became obsessed with Allende's revelations, and the disturbed researcher took his own life in 1959.

The Mystical and Strange Life of Edgar Cayce

As a child, Edgar Cayce (18 March 1877 – 3 January 1945)  reportedly saw the ghost of his deceased grandfather. He was confident that it was a ghost, because it became transparent if he "looked hard enough." 

Cayce was brought to church at age 10, where he became engrossed in the Bible. Over the next two years, he read it from cover to cover a dozen times. In May 1889, while reading the Bible in his hut in the woods, Cayce said he encountered a woman with wings who told him that his prayers had been answered. The woman asked him what he wanted most of all. Cayce told biographer Thomas Sugrue that he was frightened but told the woman that he wanted to help others, especially children. He eventually decided that he wanted to be a missionary. 

Cayce said that the next night, after a complaint from his teacher (he said that he generally found it difficult to focus on his lessons), his father ruthlessly tested him on spelling and angrily knocked Cayce out of his chair. Cayce said that he heard the woman with wings tell him that if he went to sleep, "they" could help him. He put his head on his spelling book, and fell asleep; when his father returned to the room and woke him up, he knew all of the answers and could repeat anything in the book. He said that his father thought he had been fooling him before, and knocked him out of his chair again. Cayce said that he then studied all his schoolbooks that way: by sleeping on them. He said that by 1892, he had become the best student in his class. 

On questioning, Cayce told the teacher that he saw pictures of the pages in the books. His father, proud of this accomplishment, spread the news. During a school ball game, Cayce was struck in his coccyx and began to act strangely. He said that he went to sleep one night, diagnosed his ailment and recommended a cure, all in his sleep. His family prepared the cure according to his instructions, and it worked. Cayce's reported ability to diagnose in his sleep did not return for several years.

On March 14, 1897, Cayce became engaged to Gertrude Evans. Throughout his life, Cayce was drawn to the Disciples of Christ. He read the Bible once a year, attended church, taught Sunday school, and recruited missionaries. He said that he could see auras around people, spoke to angels, and heard the voices of departed relatives. In his early years, he agonized about whether these prophetic abilities were spiritually delivered.

In 1900 Cayce developed severe laryngitis which resulted in a complete loss of speech.  A traveling stage hypnotist named Hart, who called himself "The Laugh Man", performed in 1901. Hart heard about Cayce's throat condition and offered to attempt a cure. Cayce accepted his offer and the experiment was conducted in the office of Manning Brown, the local throat specialist. Cayce's voice reportedly returned while he was in a hypnotic trance, but disappeared when he awakened. Hart unsuccessfully tried a post-hypnotic suggestion that Cayce's voice would continue to function after the trance.

Since Hart had appointments in other cities, he could not continue his hypnotic treatments of Cayce; he said that he failed because Cayce would not enter the third stage of hypnosis and accept a suggestion. New York hypnotist John Duncan Quackenbos found the same impediment but, after returning to New York, suggested that Cayce should take over his own case in the second stage of hypnosis. The only local hypnotist, Al Layne, offered to help Cayce regain his voice. 

When Layne put Cayce into trance, Cayce could communicate vocally. Cayce told Layne to give him (Cayce) a suggestion to increase blood circulation to his throat. Layne gave the suggestion; Cayce's throat reportedly turned bright red, and after 20 minutes Cayce (still in a trance) declared the treatment over. On awakening, his voice was said to have remained normal. Relapses occurred, but were reportedly corrected by Layne until the cure was eventually permanent. 

Layne asked Cayce to describe Layne's ailments and suggest cures, and reportedly found the results accurate and effective. 

Layne considered Cayce's ability clairvoyance, and suggested that he offer his psychic diagnostic service to the public. Cayce was reluctant, since he had no idea what he was prescribing while asleep and did not know if his remedies were safe. He told Layne that he did not want to know anything about a patient, since it was not relevant. He agreed on the condition that readings would be free, and specified that if the readings ever hurt anyone, he would never do another. He began, with Layne's help, to offer free treatments to the townspeople. Layne described Cayce's method as "... a self-imposed hypnotic trance which induces clairvoyance". 

Reports of Cayce's work appeared in newspapers, which prompted a number of postal inquiries. Cayce said that he could work as effectively with a letter from an individual as with a person present in the room. Given a person's name and location, Cayce said that he could diagnose the physical and mental conditions of what he called "the entity" and provide a remedy. Cayce was still reticent and worried, because "one dead patient was all he needed to become a murderer". His fiancée agreed, and few people knew what he was doing.

Cayce's work increased with his fame, and he asked for donations to support himself and his family so he could practice full-time. Cayce continued to work in an apparent trance state with a hypnotist all his life.
