As generative AI's influence on the consumer tech industry widens, we've seen a growing number of brands, manufacturers, and companies make impressive strides in innovation, at least as far as AI is concerned. Not one to be outdone, MediaTek announced that it will be showcasing its upcoming LLM demo at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, scheduled to take place later this month in Barcelona. Part of MediaTek's official announcement reads: "Last August, we announced that we are working closely to leverage Llama 2, Meta’s open-source LargeLanguage Model (LLM), as part of our ongoing investment in creating technology and an ecosystem thatenables the future of AI... At Mobile World Congress 2024, MediaTek will demonstrate an optimized Llama 2 Generative AI application on-device using MediaTek’s APU edge hardware acceleration on the Dimensity 9300 and 8300 for the first time." MediaTek adds that it will be using its latest APUs and NeuroPilot AI platform, which will work in tandem with Llama 2 in enabling generative AI apps to run directly on-device, instead of a cloud-based method. Based on how current generative AI for mobile devices works at the moment, this does seem to be a more promising solution - for example, Google's AI-based Magic Editor feature on its Pixel phones often requires users to initially backup their photo to the cloud before allowing them to make edits on their files. MediaTek states that providing users with an on-device method for Generative AI is a more ideal scenario, as it opens the floodgates for seamless performance, better privacy, and security, lower latency, as well as the ability to work in cases where there's no online connectivity. In addition, on-device integration for Llama 2 will require powerful chipsets to handle the workload involved, in which case MediaTek's dimensity 9300 and 8300 mobile chipsets are ideal hardware solutions, at least according to the company. As for the chips, MediaTek states that both Dimensity SoCs can support Llama 2 7B applications. In particular, the Dimensity 9300 is tailor-made for generative AI features. For instance, the 9300 features a 7th-gen APU that’s responsible for hardware-accelerated generative AI onto mobile devices – as such, MediaTek claims that the 9300 comes with 8x faster transformer-based generative Al, 2x faster integer and floating-point compute improvement, 45% more power efficiency, and even support for on-device LoRA Fusion. So!  The Tsuranga Conundrum. I could only see it today and it was so, so good. I loved it so much. I’m also very enthusiastic in this post because it felt like there was something about it that I couldn’t find in the previous few episodes and I loved it for that as well. Several highlights:
- character development! Or at least revelations about characters and digging a bit deeper into their psyche (obviously mainly Ryan and a bit of Doctor, but it was everyone, really). Loved this bit.
- All the episode-only characters were pretty amazing too. Memorable in every possible way and adding on to Who canon in beautiful way. The idea of neuropilots was really fascinating to me.
- The concept of Pting was a strange thing because IMO it felt a bit like a metaphor about the general state of things - it wasn’t trying to kill them. It didn’t even care. It just wanted to eat. And it’s just such a good comparison to life in general because no, the bad things happening to you are not fate and it’s not always someone being purposefully hostile, it just... be like that sometimes. At least that’s what first came to mind.
- People prevail. Hope prevails. No commentary needed.
- The prayer/ceremony at the end! It was so beautiful and made me tear up halfway through trying to translate it; always a good thing, really.

MediaTek has added a new member to its portfolio of gaming-centric mobile platforms – the MediaTek Helio G80. As the name makes it abundantly clear, the MediaTek Helio G80 SoC is a slightly more powerful version of the MediaTek Helio G70 SoC that was also detailed earlier this year. The new MediaTek offering is an octa-core SoC that leverages the in-house HyperEngine technology to offer a better gaming output and connectivity experience. However, MediaTek or its partners are yet to reveal details about any upcoming phone(s) powered by the Helio G80 SoC.
As per the official product page, the MediaTek Helio G80 SoC has a cluster of two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2GHz, while a cluster of six Cortex-A55 cores ticking at 1.8GHz is there to handle non-demanding tasks. It offers support for up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM operating at a frequency of 1800MHz, and eMMC5.1 storage standard. The Helio G80 is a 4G-only SoC that comes equipped with the Mali-G52 2EEMC2 GPU for graphics crunching.
The new MediaTek offering employs the proprietary HyperEngine Game Technology for better resource management with regards to power and thermals in order to deliver smoother gaming performance. On the other hand, MediaTek HyperEngine connectivity enhancements are also onboard, alongside the in-house CorePilot, NeuroPilot, Pump Express, Tiny Sensor Hub, and Integrated VoW (voice on wakeup) technologies.
Hardware compatibility of the MediaTek Helio G80 SoC includes support for up to dual 16-megapixel sensors or a single 48-megapixel camera, while supported features include electronic image stabilisation (EIS), Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC), and AI-assisted face unlock. Connectivity suite of the new MediaTek offering is rounded off by Bluetooth 5.0, Beidou, Galileo, Glonass, GPS, and 4G LTE.

La IA presente en esta nueva ola de smartphones prevé la posibilidad de que el usuario ya no busque todas las soluciones en la nube, en donde su comportamiento e información no está libre de observación de terceros. La idea de que cada uno pueda procesar gran parte de lo que necesite en su propio equipo, sin esperar soluciones externas, gana terreno. De esta manera, aumentan las condiciones de privacidad de cada usuario. “Para garantizar mayor privacidad, lo que se necesita es un equipo robusto, capaz de procesar una gran cantidad de datos y que las aplicaciones corran rápido. Son los procesadores la clave en donde junto al software trabajan en conjunto para resolver las necesidades del usuario” señaló el Ing. Hernán Descalzi, gerente de Cono Sur de MediaTek  durante una presentación de tendencias de inteligencia artificial en smartphones. Las mejoras en seguridad que derivan de esta tendencia y que pueden ser percibidas por el usuario se relacionan con la capacidad de resolver tareas con su equipo que antes se realizaban con asistencia la nube, también en la respuesta que el teléfono brindará sólo cuando escuche la voz del dueño del teléfono o en reconocer las distintas versiones de su rostro: con o sin barba, pelo corto vs. pelo largo, teñido o natural.

Respecto a la tendencia a contar con una mejor “disponibilidad”, el avance que muestra la IA en este punto es que el usuario tenga acceso a trabajar mejor en el modo offline. La conexión a Internet entonces no sería una limitación para disfrutar de algunas funciones que van más allá de las que conocimos en la primera etapa de IA como la edición o efectos especiales sobre imagen y voz, o la disponibilidad de música. La mejora para el usuario final se va a observar en una experiencia de realidad aumentada más completa, en la posibilidad de almacenar en su teléfono su álbum favorito de fotos sin compartir públicamente en las redes, una cámara más ágil para asistir al usuario en el momento en que toma fotografías, una mejor asistencia en el procesamiento de todos los datos.

Por último, el aumento en la velocidad de respuesta es otro paso importante que impactará en la percepción del usuario. Existen nuevos equipos en gama media con mejoras de hasta el 30 por ciento de sus modelos antecesores. Es como si de alguna manera, un smartphone con IA ahora tome prestada la agilidad con la que responden los celulares de gaming y mejore notablemente la experiencia del usuario. Desde MediaTek observan que si bien hoy un celular estándar vs. uno de gaming muestran capacidades y diseños independientes, en un corto plazo se espera que converjan y no existan ya diferencias notables. Mejoras en AI en velocidad de respuesta son fáciles de percibir por el usuario cuando utiliza la traducción simultánea de idioma, la transcripción de texto a voz y video tracking en tiempo real.

MediaTek Helio P90 SoC with APU 20 AI architecture, up to 48MP camera support announced

MediaTek recently debuted its P70 SoC with the Realme U1 smartphone and it has now unveiled its latest Helio P90 platform. The company claims that the new processor features improved AI processing capabilities, around 4X more powerful than the Helio P70 and Helio P60 chipsets. This leap is being attributed to the APU 2.0 architecture, which is said to be a fusion AI architecture developed by MediaTek. The Helio P90 features two high-performance Arm A75 processors that can clock speeds of up to 2.2GHz, while six A55 processors are set to operate at up to 2.0GHz. The chip is expected to ship globally in consumer devices starting Q1 2019. It comes with an Imagination Technologies PowerVR GM 9446 GPU. The company's newest CorePilot technology is also used, which is a set of monitoring, task scheduling and performance optimization technologies.  The new chip also brings ISP improvements. Smartphone manufacturers that use the MediaTek Helio P90 platform will get to choose to equip either a 48MP camera or a 24+16 MP dual camera configuration on their device. The chip will enable capturing at 48MP resolution with up to 30 Frames Per Second (FPS), or slow-motion at 480FPS in HD. The SoC also sports triple image signal processors that are said to support 14-bit RAW and 10-bit YUV processing. There is also a new ISP AI engine, which is said to accurately detect faces and scenes in real-time under low light and motion conditions.  “The Helio P90 gives device makers the ability to offer outstanding camera features, battery life, performance and top of the line AI capabilities, while making devices accessible to mass-market consumers,” says TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit. “The Helio P90 is an AI processing powerhouse with ultra-fast performance and a host of AI-powered imaging improvements. This chip will reset consumer expectations of what a smartphone can do, and usher in a new era of super high-resolution smartphone photography to the market.” As mentioned above, MediaTek is touting the new processor to come with enhanced processing when it comes to AI-related tasks. It features human pose detection, which can track and analyze body movements and it also supports Google Lens, deep-learning facial detection, real-time beautification, object and scene identification, artificial reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) acceleration, along with other real-time enhancements for photos and videos. The chip also supports applications developed using frameworks such as TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe and Caffe2, based on MediaTek’s NeuroPilot SDK.  The Helio P90 supports dual SIM dual VoLTE 4G LTE WorldMode with Cat-12 (DL) / Cat-13 (UL) 4G LTE modem.
