How to Go to Cappadocia? It is quite easy to go to Cappadocia. It totally depends on your choice, you can go there by taking a flight, bus or renting your own car. If you want to do it in a quick way there two airports that are very close to the region; Nevsehir Cappadocia Airport and Kayseri Airport. You can find daily flights to both of them from the multiple airports in Turkey, especially from the Istanbul Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport. It is possible to buy a connected flight to Nevsehir Cappadocia Airport and Kayseri Airport if you buy your tickets from Turkish Airlines or Pegasus Airlines. Probably you won't find any foreign airlines that flying to these airports. From both of the airports, there are regular shuttles to the city center. That means you can avoid taking a taxi from the airport to the city centers. Intercity Buses Your second option to go Cappadocia is taking intercity buses. There are tons of buses that are going to the Nevsehir and Kayseri from the cities of Turkey. So, there is no need to list buses or companies. But I can suggest you to choose Kamil Koc, Pamukkale, Anadolu companies to buy your tickets which are the best ones in Turkey. Besides the flights and buses, my favorite is the car. From Istanbul, a car ride to the Cappadocia which is about 800 km. That will be quite an adventure for you. You can follow this route to go to the region. If you can share a couple of days for this route you can visit the cities are on your route. When to Visit Cappadocia? The best time to visit the Cappadocia is during the spring and summer. Because in winter, the region is quite cold, minus zero. Also, there will be lots of snow. Especially between June and August, it will be very crowded. So it is better to choose between April-May and September-October. In this way, at least you may avoid the high number of local tourists. How Many Days Do You Need to Visit Cappadocia? Well, I think that 3 or 4 days would be enough for a full Cappadocia experience. But it is always better than to decide about the length of your visit. If you ask me how long will you stay there, I will probably say a week. Because I'm a calm person who is enjoying the nature and silence. But if you are young and full of wild 3 days would be enough to do everything. You will find the best answer when you finished reading this post.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia?

The best and major places that you can stay during your visit; Urgup, Ortahisar, Goreme, and Avanos. I'm not suggesting you stay in Nevsehir or Kayseri city centers. Because you came to the feel and experience nature, right? Most of the people stay at Goreme or Urgup. Especially in the cave houses converted to the hotels. Wherever you stay don't worry about the transportation there are shuttles all around the Cappadocia.

There are very few fairy chimneys or cave houses in Urgup but still offers lots of places to stay. Also, the restaurants which offer traditional Turkish cuisines are quite good. Goreme Your first choice for accommodation can be Goreme where is the closest place for the balloon tour and Goreme National Park. There are also lots of cave houses to stay in. Also, Ortahisar is the other location you may stay where is quite similar to the Goreme. Avanos If you are looking for a more modern place to stay, Avanos can be answered to that. There are lots of pottery studios in Avanos. Also, the Zelve valley is only 3 km far away from Avanos. There are a couple of places to see in Avanos district and you will find them below.

What to Do and See in Cappadocia

There are so many things to see and do in Cappadocia. As you know when some refer Capadocia region it includes Goreme, Urgup, Avanos, Ortahisar and a couple of other settlements. I tried to list the top attraction should be made and places to be seen during your time in Cappadocia. If you have only one day for Cappadocia and want to have a full experience as possible please take look to this Cappadocia Red Tour: 1-Day Excursion from Goreme. Hot Air Balloon Tour The most famous thing to do is joining a hot air balloon tour in Cappadocia. Your tour will start before the sunrise. You will experience an incredible scene while you are rising to the sky with tens of hot air balloons. It is really uniques thing to experience at least once in a lifetime. You will have an idea about the hot air balloon tour if you watch the video below. During the hot air balloon tour, you will up to 600 meters from the ground level and travel up to 20 km to see the natural heritage of the region. At each ballon, generally, there will be 8 to 24 people. If you have lots of money, of course, you can rent your own private balloon. Where ever you stay in Cappadocia, Goreme, Urgup or Avanos there will be agencies that selling the hot air balloon tour tickets. But the majority of them are Goreme located. Probably I will write another post just for the Cappadocia hot air balloon tour in the future. Ticket prices for hot air balloon tours vary by the demand and the season but my suggestion to use the tiqets.com to buy your tickets in advance which always more and better than buying the tickets from the venue. There are two types of hot air balloon tours that you can join; Deluxe Hot Air Balloon Flight and Hot Air Balloon Flight. The main difference between the deluxe and normal hot air balloon flight is the number of people. For the deluxe, there will be 10-12 at max. Also, the tour will be 30 minutes more rather than normal. Don't forget to share your experiences on the comment section. Fairy Chimneys The natural heritage and making the region world-wide famous is the charming fairy chimneys. There are thousands of fairy chimneys in the Cappadocia region but of course, some of them are more famous than the others. The most intense place with full of fairy chimneys is the area located between Avanos, Urgup, and Uchisar. Sahinefendi village where is located in Urgup, there 3 valleys that full of fairy chimneys. In other words, you should visit the Soganli valley to see the most famous ones. The second place that you can find the fairy chimneys is the Pasabag valley where is on the road between Avanos and Goreme. You can both discover fairy chimneys by yourself or joining a daily tour.

There are tons of cave houses and also religious buildings like churches and monasteries. Within the Goreme Open Air, you can visit Yilanlı Church, Elmalı Church, Karanlik Church, St. Basileus Church, St. Barbara Church, Carikli Church, Tokali Church, Girls and Boys Monastery. Zelve Open Air Museum consists of a three valley full of fairy chimneys. Like the Goreme Open Air Museum, there are many churches in Zelve Open Air Museum. The most famous one of these churches is the Balikli Church, Uzumlu Church, and Geyikli Church. It is believed that these churches are made around the 6th century. You will witness the history of a city made from rocks (Source). Underground Cities Another interesting thing about Cappadocia is underground cities! In Cappadocia, there are 36 underground cities that discovered until now. So it is time to go deep into the center of the world from Cappadocia. Like Great Pyramids of Giza, Cappadocia Underground Cities is a unique example of great mind and engineering. You will even see the capillary air duct that allows thousands of people can breather 10 meters below from the surface level. It is incredible right? The biggest of them is the Derinkuyu Underground City and Kaymakli Underground City. Their history dates back to B.C. 3000. If you have time you can also visit other underground cities in the Cappadocia regions; Ozkonak, Tatlarin, Mazi, Ozluce and Gaziemir underground cities. Derinkuyu Underground City The biggest underground city in the Cappadocia region is the Derinkuyu underground city. Derinkuyu Underground City discovered in 1963. After a short from discovery, Derinkuyu Underground City opened for the visitors. Derinkuyu means deep (derin) wheel(kuyu) and gets its name from the 52 drinking wheel under the 60-70 meters depth from the ground. Since the discovery of the city only the 2.5 square kilometers area cleaned and opened to visitors. Probably there are more areas waiting for the discovery. Now, in total 8 floors discovered and expected to find at least 6-7 more floors up to 100 meters depth. The structural properties of Kaymakli Underground City are quite similar to the Derinkuyu Underground City. Kaymakli Underground City is not as big as the Derinkuyu Underground city but it can hold around 5000 people at once! You may discover the artist within you while you are trying to make a potter from clays. You will use a setup which name is chez in these workshops. Trying to give shape to it which can be used as a bowl or something else really challenging experiences for anyone. You will find pottery shops in Goreme, Urgup, and Avanos but the most famous ones are in Avanos. Generally, when you go to the pottery shop they will give brief information about the history of pottery making and help you to make a basic one. Also, there are a couple of small museums in Avanos about pottery history and clay products. My suggestion to visit the Guray Ceramics Museum which is the famous one. This museum belongs to a family who is in the pottery business since 1843. You can check the video below to see what will you encounter :) Horse Tour, Safari and ATV It is possible to increase your adrenaline level in Cappadocia. The meaning of Cappadocia in Persian is the "Beautiful country of Horses". Horse riding safari tour is becoming more and more popular every year. To join the horse safari tour you don't need any experience with horse riding. You don't need to worry about your security because tours are well organized and help you with everything during your ride, even your kids can ride horses. Generally, all of the horse safari riding tours follow the same route with small differences. You can buy your safari tickets from your hotel or from the agencies in the Goreme, Urgup or Avanos city centers.

You can also visit the horse farm in Cappadocia (Source). If you want more adrenaline you can join the ATV safari tours! You don't need a special driving license to join the ATV safari tours in Cappadocia. Tour agencies will give you personal protection gears but you can bring your own ones also. Kids under 3 years old not allowed to join the tour and under 12 can only seat at the back seat with their parents. Like the horse safari tours, you can find ATV safari tour tickets fro your hotel or agencies in Goreme, Urgup or Avanos city centers.

Don't Forget to Bring These!

I'm strongly recommending to bring a couple of things to the Cappadocia with you. The first one is sun cream. Cappadocia may not be near the sea but you can get a sunburn. Inmates End Own Lives to Protest Rebel Kurdish Leader's Treatment in Turkey

At least four Kurdish activists have died in prisons across Turkey since last week, in what lawyers and officials have called suicides over the poor prison conditions of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan. The series of alleged suicides by Kurdish prisoners started on March 17 when Kurdish officials confirmed that Zulkuf Gezen took his own life, followed by the deaths of Ayten Becet and Zehra Saglam by similar attempts last weekend. Officials of pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) also confirmed on Monday the death of the fourth Kurdish activist, 24-year-old inmate Medya Cinar. "Today, those who refused to listen to us caused the death of the fourth prisoner," HDP co-chair Sezai Temelli said during a public gathering Monday in Adana. "For 139 days, we have been calling on the Ministry of Justice and the government to end this lawlessness," Temelli said to a crowd of supporters, referring to a widespread hunger strike campaign by Kurdish prisoners since November. "We say that their demands must be fulfilled without deaths," he added. The four deaths have prompted demonstrations from thousands of Kurds in Turkey, northern Syria and some parts of Europe. The four activists had been in prison for years over alleged ties to PKK — a U.S., EU and Turkey-designated terrorist organization. Before ending their lives this month, they joined in the hunger strike that initially began in November 2018 to pressure Turkish authorities into giving more access to Ocalan. The rebel leader has been imprisoned on an island in the Marmara Sea since 1999. He has been prevented from meeting with his lawyers since 2011, and has rarely been allowed to see his family. The hunger strikes over his jail conditions were first initiated by HDP lawmaker Leyla Guven last November. Since then, an estimated 300 Kurdish lawmakers and activists across Turkey have joined. Turkish officials have refused to yield to the strikers' requests, calling their activities an attempt by the HDP to stir up trouble in the country and spread pro-PKK propaganda. "I do not call them deputies [representatives]. They are the PKK's deputies," Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said last week, referring to Kurdish HDP lawmakers in the Turkish parliament. Burial, clashes Speaking to a crowd of the ruling Justice and Development Party supporters in Nevsehir city, Soylu condemned HDP officials for attempting to organize a solidarity meeting at the burial site of Gezen. "The other day, a terrorist died in prison. They wanted to meet and join the burial of the terrorist in Diyarbakir. I called the police chief and told him, 'Do not allow anyone to be near the airport. Do not allow anyone to be within one kilometer of the cemetery.' That is impossible for us to tolerate," Soylu told the crowd as reported by local Turkish media outlets. The burial ceremony, which took place last Monday and was attended by dozens of people, ended in violent clashes when police fired a water cannon to disperse the supporters. According to pro-Kurdish ANF News, several HDP lawmakers were barred from entering Diyarbakir cemetery where Gezen was buried. PKK 'wing' Government officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have repeatedly accused the HDP of being the political wing of the PKK. The militant PKK group has been demanding Kurdish autonomy in Turkey since 1978. Leaving Istanbul to fly to Cappadocia Turkey, we realize that the weather wasn’t going to be on our side. The distance is about 750kms, so a flight is the best way to travel to this destination. The rain had no intention of slowing down, with umbrellas in hand, a backpack for the day we are now on our way to the airport. I’m super excited, a bucket list item is just about to happen, witnessing the fantastic early morning take off that occurs twice per day! It’s about an hours drive from the Nevsehir Airport to Gorham (70kms) in the shuttle service that came with the tour we had purchased. Our first stop is a quick coffee break while we pick up some guests at a local hotel.

I’m super stoked, the rain is stopped, the weather is just how it should have been at 3am. The bad news came, Roland, unfortunately, the hot air balloons will not take off this morning. What a bummer this news was, I had been dreaming of this for such a long time. The rest of the day is well planned out for us, we make our way to Gorham, a fairytale piece of heaven is exposed to us. The above photo depicts the most beautiful view I could ever imagine in my life. I only researched the hot air balloons taking off and nothing else. Check the work that went into these homes dating back to 1600.

A closer look at how they built these homesteads, they would start scrapping the lava rocks, yes I did say scrape all the excess to create the walls, floors and ceilings. The tour guide we had spoken French, English and Turkish, and taking care of our needs throughout this tour was his number one agenda. We could tell he was full of knowledge, it was bursting out of him like a kid blowing bubbles. He was an investment well worth it. He took his time, explaining every detail from each era, from the monks take over, the churches being involved and the kings. This one is really worth buying for its price – that took us to many places like the Pidgeon Valley, Ilhara Valley – which is said to be one of the world’s largest natural canyons. Lunch was a part of the tour, we arrived on the second level of the restaurant, a large patio that opens up over Gorham and saw a lot of other valleys and chimneys.

It has lots of fairy chimneys and ancient cave houses dated 6th century BC, lots of churches and evidence from the Christian and Ottoman influence in the region… It’s a unique cultural and historical heritage, not only in the Open Air Museum but also all over Cappadocia. Touring the area, we stopped in to visit a still functioning home now turned into a showpiece depicting how they lived many years ago. I cannot remember the gentleman’s name that owned this original home he is the gent in one of the photos below, with our tour guide he could communicate to us and answer our questions regarding his life. After he retired from farming, he decided to open up his home that accommodates tourists year round. He has many souvenirs, lots of Turkish rugs, and a personality to make us enjoy our stop in his home. This one experience is really worth buying for its price – that took us to many places like the Pidgeon Valley, Ilhara Valley – which is said to be one of the world’s largest natural canyons. We had lunch and saw a lot of other valleys, chimneys and exciting places.

The small shops are located everywhere, you can take home at a reasonable cost many local Turkish souvenirs like the lamps shown below or the evil eye that you may have noticed in some of the photos. They will package or ship them home for your convenience (reputable seller only).

Lunch with a view is served at a local restaurant that gave us the best lookout to the cityscape of Gorham. We experienced the local culinary dishes, like hummus, Papaz Yahnisi (Turkish beef stew) and Baklava. This was a superb experience adding to the view and new friendships.

Now, you can’t do a tour in Gorham without hopping on the back of a camel, being my first and not my last time. I enjoyed the ride as short and sweet it was. It’s given me the “addiction.” Now I want to travel in the desert sand dunes on the back of a camel. Just an idea 🙂

Taking a full adventure tour with a company means that it’s well planned, the new friends we made during the trip also had the same agenda; do, see and try as much as you can in one jam-packed day. We enjoyed the demonstration, and even our friend decided to make a vase, fail. Lol. None of us had the hang at pottery making. It still was fascinating, the shopping in the gallery was so much better than our attempted pottery making. Check the photos below.

As the day is coming to an end, it’s time to pack up and head to the airport. We didn’t even want to return, the weather was clear. We knew that the hot air balloons would be taking off by the time we’d be checked in at the airport. I’m not happy, but tomorrow we’re off to another destination. As I write this blog almost 2 years after we are back in Canada, I’ve had 2 attempts with hot air balloon lift offs, both were cancelled due to the weather, and that is just my luck.

hello tumblr! well we’ve missed alot but okay. i’ll try to remember wht had happen over th last few months. 📌 first thing first, i got (finally!)married to th (real)LOML on th 211219! alhamdullilah! #theWanforMira is finally halal! --- th wedding went well and smoothly on both sides, thanks to our family, groomsmen and bridesmaids. we had 3 beautiful outfits as per picture by my dream bridal, With Love Yumi and i was beautified by kak hidayah. i had a beautiful decor by SID, superb delicious food by my mak. it was a memorable day we(or atleast i) wont forget. i got S to dance for my hadang. not only tht, he had his groomsmen to dance along too, not to a song, but 2 songs! heheh, i was literally smiling ear-to-ear when i saw him dance for th first time. it was so cute, i cant! i wanted to cry cos i knw he wouldnt do such things yet, he always suprises me. sigh. i love this gem 💎

📌 routinely, whoever get married, will head over for their honeymoon right? so did we. ours was a secret destination(to our family) until we were sent off by our them(which was quite a surprise, cos it was a Monday) & friends. i was a lil too attached to adam, so i cried when i left him. --- anw, our honeymoon was @ TURKEY! we went for 12days! 3nights at Cappadocia & 6nights in Istanbul! before all these, pls consider us having an almost 24hrs flight + stop over at dubai. (then i realised i have a pimple at my groin. applied acne patch and okay, lets sleep till next flight)

📌 CAPPADOCIA: we came here for th same reason others would, their hot air balloon! arrived at nevsehir airport, safely and frozen! yup, cos we were just in sweater and jeans! thank goodness we got our self airport service and they’re just in time! lucky us, he let us rest in th van first(warmer: on). phew! and yes, being asian, we’re very foreign to th weather and super amazed tht cold air came out of our mouths. hehehe. also, glad we took airport transfer cos th route to th hotel was dark and took us 30mins to reach.

1st day, arrived at hotel, Henna Konak Hotel. got checked in, chill(cos jetlagged), we had our dinner and bam, we had our sleep. oh wait, no. im missing out an important part. so remember th pimple? yup, i remove th acne patch and put plaster which i bought from their local shop. it was a cloth-material ya, not th typical elastic waterproof kind. chop-chop, we slept it off and next morning. checked email: tour for hot air balloon was extended to tmrw as to a bad weather. it was very windy and very cold. {pimple check: a lil redness seen, swelling a lil} weather checked: 4-5°C

2nd day - woke up for breakfast and ever ready for our tour! so showered, remove my plaste---- checked email: TOUR CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER. MONEY IS REFUNDED. very devastating 😭😭 long story short, we’re aimless roaming for souvenirs, finding for alternative tour since hot air balloon is cancelled! explore places to eat and enjoy watching alot of stray dogs and munchkins! hehehe theyre so adorable i wanna chew them, okie im not sadist. {pimple check: --- (I ACCIDENTLY PULL MY SKIN AND TEAR IT WHILE I WAS REMOVING TH PLASTER) yes O-U-C-H! moving on, i applied pantyliner over th pimple cos now it looks like a pus. EWW. swelling got bigger.} weather checked: 2-4°C

3rd day - we have been having cappadocia breakfast and enjoying every bit of it. we literally had fruits and mains for breakfast. so we got a tour. normal museum visiting, history knowledge and S bought me an onyx ring which (super)pretty! it changes color depending on light! heheh as a souvenir too! and, we did ATV! first time for me cos S did ATV bfr, so he got th hang of it. we were fetched and sent to another place for it. as we travelled, it gets colder despite th warmer in car. random weather check, it was -2°C umm okie, reached destination > briefed on ATV > chose our helmet(i chose a helmet tht has no face shield) and leggo! as we drove, im getting a hang of it and enjoying it until, i increased my speed as my trainer was way ahead and thts when, i got snow slapped! it was a cool experience also.. unforgettable. cos initially it was drizzling, little did we knw, it was snowing. we were starting to freeze. and bummer us, we left our phone in th ATV-house. lucky we had a nice trainer, he had our shot taken by his phone. {pimple check: now, i have to stretch bfr i even do anything, just so my groin is “seasoned” and also cos im limping a lil.} weather checked: 1-3°C

4th day: to summarise our cappadocia trip, we enjoyed th company of new people. met new friends. l learnt how to ride ATV. we have a valid reason to come back for hot air balloon. sad to leave as it starts to snow. Cappadocia will be missed! checkout > head to airport. {pimple check: swelling gets worst. pus is eliminating itself, causes mess. redness got worst too, signs of infection. limping not getting any better too.} weather checked: FINALLY IT SNOWED! -1 - 1°C

📌 ISTANBUL: okay nope, not gonna do th day-by-day thing again. haha, im gonna summarise it. cos, i didnt really enjoy my istanbul trip, except we could sightseeing, explore museums, food(kunafeh all day, everyday!) and met Aysenur! she is my bestfriend’s(Nad) friend! while my biggest highlight was our stay for a week @ Yasmak Hotel & my infected pimple. Yasmak Hotel was 11/10! really, their customer service was 110%! their breakfast was always lit! okay, its lit for us cos we’re asian? hahah. but really, we would go back to th same hotel and definitely diff itinerary. i’ll post pictures in my next post from my honeymoon! wait ya!

📌 CORONA TIME. period. no attachments, hence 2mths holiday! wooo! 📌 we were suppose to celebrate S’s advance bday in Bangkok. plans cancelled due to covid(corona virus disease 2019). so we change to KL, well better than nothing. guess Hes th best planner above all. Malaysia had lockdown. so no ones entering in or exitting out. OK. so staycation it is. 📌 2mths ends in 2days, tht means school start! yes. FINALLY, I’VE BEEN ROTTING AT HOME. okay no, school had to be on hold, so everything do online, okay. lets zoom! summary of my 2months @ home, i did cooking, i learn to cook new dish, housechores all day-everyday cos sis is staying at in laws. hehe. okay bye! love, mira.
