Profile
Early Life
Anaxagoras was born in Shambhala in 1165 as the only successful experiment in the assignment of the Artificial Crest "Crescent Moon", created by her father, Myson, and Odesse. Her mother, Cornelia, died giving birth to her and was replaced by Cleobulus, who took the newborn to Fhirdiad in 1167.
There, she was raised in secret in the castle dungeons, deprived of food and water for long periods of time to prevent rebellion, and robbed almost daily of her extremely precious blood. Because of her semi-immortality, "Cornelia" often inflicted terrible tortures on her for the sole purpose of entertaining herself and passing the time. Anaxagoras, severely weakened, had no way to protest, suffering in silence every abuse protracted by her false mother.
In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes or if Byleth chooses to teach the Black Eagles, Anaxagoras' past will be slightly different:
Instead than in the castle dungeons, she will be raised in the sunlight, but forced starvation and torture by her mother will still occur. Unlike when she was alone, however, in these timelines she can count on Prince Dimitri, to whom she will have the courage to confide several times. The two will then forge a strong bond and support each other in the events to come. He will be the one to give her the name "Ksenia", given her hatred for her real name.
In 1176, at the age of eleven, Anaxagoras was the main weapon for the regicide's success.
Months before the event, Cornelia forced her to gorge herself in order to gain weight and then produce more blood and magic. Once "ready," she was subjected to hyugulation and made to bleed like a literal beast. Her blood was later made to drink by soldiers who went mad and began killing innocents in Duscur, and then committed suicide when the mission was accomplished. She herself was secretly present and forced to cast magic attacks toward the king and his escort. She will never forget Lambert's suffering gaze on her a moment before he was decapitated.
War Phase
The burst of war resulted in a worsening of Anaxagoras' condition. Those Who Slither in the Dark's demand for blood increased exponentially, and Cornelia also began to use it to power the Titans, giant robots driven by unknown and advanced technologies.
Crimson Flower
After returning to Fhirdiad, Dimitri married Anaxagoras in secret, formalizing her name change to "Ksenia" and crowning her as his queen consort. After that, Cornelia was exiled to Arianrhod and, despite Ksenia's dissent, was provided asylum to Rhea and to the Church of Seiros.
Four years later, Ksenia got pregnant and, in late 1185, Prince Aleksei was born. The news was not spread, and only a few people knew of the existence of an heir to the throne.
A month later Dimitri left for Tailtean, and she, haunted by a terrible feeling, followed him to the battlefield, supporting him in the fight against the Black Eagle Strike Force. Ksenia was utterly disgusted by Edelgard's actions and, once she saw her husband die before her own eyes, she expressed this in words, but she was badly wounded in the back by the Empress and buried alive with her husband's head clutched in her lap.
Azure Moon
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amounts of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri offered to free her as well, but under the circumstances she was forced to refuse, making him promise that sooner or later he would kill her mother Cornelia.
Their reunion took place five years later. Once Fhirdiad was regained, Dimitri rushed to the dungeons in search of the girl who saved his life; he found her in the same cell, but in a dying condition. She had been left starving for months, reduced to a pile of bones and with a very deep wound that drew her Crest on her back, unable to heal quickly because it was inflicted by a magical blade. He decided to take her with him to make sure she received the best care, and when she finally began to get better, she offered to lend aid to the wounded, becoming essential in saving many lives. Before the end of the war, Anaxagoras took the courage and revealed to Dimitri her involvement in the Tragedy of Duscur, begging him to execute her because she could no longer bear to have been among the authors of the regicide. Instead, however, the new king was sympathetic and spared her, claiming that she too had been a victim of Cornelia. To leave her past behind, he gave her the new name "Ksenia".
If Dimitri marries no one at the end of the war, two years later he will take Ksenia as his wife and the two will live a happy and love-filled life. If, however, Dimitri marries another woman, Ksenia will disappear into thin air and all trace of her will be lost.
Verdant Wind
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amounts of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri carried her off as well by force and the two fled Fhirdiad together, living as vagabonds in absolute misery. They spent the last five years fighting imperial soldiers, but she could not stop the prince's fall into oblivion; she ended up being treated as a mere medium for the success of his plans, yet she did not have the guts to abandon him. She was later badly wounded and due to malnutrition ended up becoming badly infected, causing a glow of sanity in Dimitri, who began to protect her again as at the beginning of their journey. Shortly thereafter they were both found by Gustave and she saved.
After Dimitri's death in Gronder, Ksenia left the group and followed the Alliance army to Garreg Mach. She spoke with Byleth and Claude and offered her assistance both in battle and with the wounded, asking for hospitality until they reached Enbarr. After Edelgard's death, she rejoined Dedue and left the capital with him.
Silver Snow
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amount of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri saved her as well and they both took asylum in Fraldarius territory, forging a strong bond, but this did not prevent the prince from falling into oblivion. She continued to support him, despite her opposition, even on his suicidal march to Enbarr.
After Dimitri's death in Gronder, Ksenia left the group and came alone to Garreg Mach. She spoke with Byleth and Seteth and offered her help both in battle and with the wounded but did not reveal her identity, declaring that she was pregnant and asking for hospitality until they reached Enbarr. After Edelgard's death, she reunited with Dedue and left the capital with him.
Bloody Lightning
Ten days after being buried, Ksenia was exhumed together with Dimitri by Those Who Slither in the Dark and taken to Shambhala. Although she was still alive thanks to her Crest, she completely refused to leave her husband's head and looked like a corpse herself.
After a long rehabilitation and regained sense of self, she spent the next two decades segregated underground with the only company of her father and Dedue, now transformed for eternity into a demonic beast.
When she saved Sera's life because of a premonitory dream, she realized that the protagonist of the vision was indeed her son, but Myson forcibly brought her back to Shambhala.
The moment Aleksei himself showed up at the City Without Light, the two were finally able to reunite and she revealed to him the truth about her origins. She later followed him to Itha and became the mastermind behind the plan to reconstitute the Sacred Kingdom of Faerghus and give her son his rightful inheritance. She died after Aleksei's coronation, with a smile on her face and peace finally achieved.
Personality
Ksenia is a woman with a good soul, always ready to help others even going so far as to diminish herself. At first glance she seems shy, very closed and of few words, with a perpetual veil of melancholy in her gaze, but getting to know her in depth will reveal a jovial, outspoken and at times sarcastic personality. She enjoys saying ambiguous things without thinking too much about it and possesses a keen sense of humor.
However, she has several feelings of guilt for what she was forced to do under Cornelia's command; she feels guilty for everything bad that has happened in Fódlan since her birth, so she will repeatedly plead Dimitri to execute her and take her life because, according to her, she exists only to bring misfortune. In Bloody Lightning she is in her most precarious state of mind, where she is reduced almost to a ghost who spends her days talking to the mummified corpse of her husband as if he were still alive, consumed by a steadily growing anger toward Edelgard that is eating her up from within.
Ksenia's love for Dimitri and Aleksei is extremely strong, and for them she would not hesitate to give her life, going so far as to take advantage of her semi-immortal condition and severely injuring herself so as not to see them in trouble. Her sense of protection also extends to the entire Faerghus army, proving crucial in battle as support (especially in Three Hopes). Inversely proportional is her hatred, on the other hand, for the woman who replaced her mother, not so much for what she did to her, but for all the evildoings she did against her people; when she dies, she will be the only person for whom she will celebrate.
Etymology
It takes the name of the xenia (in ancient Greek ξενία), which among the Hellenes was the sacred concept of hospitality (as well as being an epithet of the goddess Athena), and is thus interpreted as "hospitality" or as "hospitable"; etymologically it is derived from ξένος, xénos, "guest," "stranger."
Anaxagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher. He is a pre-Socratic philosopher, counted among the pluralist physicists along with Empedocles and Democritus. He was the first philosopher to "import" philosophy to the Greek peninsula, more specifically to Athens.
Go ahead and bury me ... the Crescent Moon never dies.

More about nabatean!Lycaon, since I always miss his death anniversary -
Before being stabbed 23 times, Lycaon was alienating not the people - they loved him and cheered for him and all - but the Enbarr Senate.
and wanted to write a shitpost but then it became kind of sad
The Senate suggests they put a real military presence in the North, and deport their people around while they move “unlucky Enbarrians but not us” there to civilise some of them. Emperor Lycaon disagrees, his mom spared the families of the Elite and their followers, it’s not to lose their home.
They explain why they thought about this, they shall treat and consider the northerners as second rate citizens, for now, not to alienate the Enbarrians who fought and won against them? Some Adrestians died in the war, their families cannot accept that the ones who killed their husbands/fathers/sons/etc are still alive and living as if nothing happened! Afterwards they will become “regular” Adrestian citizens.
Lycaon of course refuses, why should they consider people second rate citizens ? And how can they say they live as if nothing happened, have they seen the state of the cities up north, ravaged by war?
“Everyone is Adrestian now, there is no need to war against fellow brothers!”
Which of course pisses his relatives is he giving more consideration to those northern barbarians than to his own kin?
Then some senators try to argue using what Willy did, “your esteemed Father displaced the inhabitants of Boramas around the newborn Empire, while it was being created, after invading them - if you let those people with their followers in their lands, they will obviously foment a rebellion!”
“They won’t rebel if we don’t give them any reason to!”
But faced with a wall - the Senate thinking the new Emperor is naïve (and wanting to get some ressources and maybe “free workers” from the North) - and Lycaon not understanding why everything isn’t alright now that Nemesis is dead.
Willy tries to tell him to be more patient, but Lycaon doesn’t want, people need help in the North right now - while mom is mopping up the remnants of the Elites - Willy insists, he cannot force people to help, it is something Enbarrians have to accept.
Lycaon nods and tries, again, to convince the Enbarr nobility/Senate, saying the people from the North are like them, they might have fought before, but now, the ones they must help are people who sing, eat, sleep, and live like they do, so instead of only bringing a military presence, they could instead bring roads, canals, baths, scholars, etc etc.
The final nail in the coffin that makes him disregard the curia completely is when one of his older brother goes “Emperor, those people aren’t like us. They are beasts and savages, they should be pacified and treated accordingly. After all, we are followers of the Divine Seiros, and she won against their hero, Nemesis. We won over them.”
And it pisses him - his mom’s church is the organisation trying to help all the non-soldiers and non-fighters and the ones who surrendered, his mom spared the children and families of the Elites, what “winning” means for them? Why are they distorting what she did and does to suit their own needs? - so he snaps “what do you mean you won? I don’t recall seeing you fighting out there, or even following Saint Seiros herself to support the ones who need help. To me, your lot never won anything, but I did, and I will decide what to do, whether you agree or not.”
Of course there were some cries of “Emperor this is no joke”, “are you bypassing the Senate’s approval?” “This institution was conserved by your Father!” etc etc - with the Hresvelgs being even more pissed thanks to their inferiority complex and being jealous, so they’re the first ones to suggest here and there that the new Emperor is a tyrant, etc etc.
Some of his friends try to reason him - sure those crusty people are idiots and never left Enbarr to see what was going on in the North - but he can’t really ignore them, can he? They are also part of the “people” he has to guide and protect! Maybe they have a point, after all, they managed to get the Empire running while they were away fighting, if their ideas sound ridiculous.
Lycaon returns for the next weekly session, and tries to convince them, again, of his plans “we can’t ask those people for reparation wheb they already lost everything!” but there’s always someone who gives a troll reply “why not make them the reparations? They can work for free as servants!” which angers him, and other trolls pop up saying kind of loudly “the Emperor spent too much time with those barbarians, his judgment is clouded”.
His friends - Gloucester’s third grandaughter twice removed and Lamine’s thirty second son - tell him not to give up, he’s also fighting for a sort of peace right now, even if it doesn’t involve swords and shields - but Lycaon thinks he never thought being an Emperor would be so complicated, and wants to ask his dad for advice and what he should do.
Seeing how the people of Enbarr seem to like him - for a reasons he doesn’t even understand - and his northerner “friends”, maybe the key to solve the issue is to make the Senate “like” northerners and his friends ?
So he tries to rekindle with his family - but they resent him because he was appointed to be Emperor and it means they’re worthless now, he denies, they are still family and they can work together with him for Adrestia’s future, however he adds the wrong words “like my northerner friends!” and it’s a big no-no.
They are not northerners, they are Hresvelgs, and they are worth more than barbarians! - Lycaon misses how he actually made things worse.
His oldest nephew comes up with a “plan TM” to make him realise good Enbarrians will never accept Northerners, and brings the textbook widow and orphans, who lost their husband/fathers to the war, due to Northeners.
“What are your Northerners allies going to do to repair their loss? Toil the land instead of the missing husband? Raise the child instead of the missing father?”
And Lycaon’s answer is some bullcrap like “then I will toil the land and raise the child myself, and if I cannot do it, I will allocate even more funds to the Church of Seiros to help everyone who lost someone during the War. And I’ll start with those cushions here, they are comfy, but they can be put to better use for people who need something to sleep on.”
So the “textbook widow and orphan” leave singing the Emperor’s praises (and the CoS!) but to the Senate he said the worst thing ever - allocating their money to support peons and those damn northeners? The Emperor isn’t thinking straight, and hasn’t been for a long time now, since he returned from the War (”maybe Emperor Lycaon isn’t as visionary as Emperor Wilhelm was”).
Lycaon knows he messed up - but still doesn’t realise why and how - so when he meets his Dad to talk about how he thinks he can never measure to him, Willy tries to reassure him he is already doing a great job and hey, he never had to do what he actually does.
Willy is serious for once, and tells him that now and back then are different, people aren’t fighting with swords but words, and it’s a better thing, at least no one dies because they disagree, right?
Also, what Lycaon wants to bring is a definite change from the current order of things in Adrestia, it will take time, time to make people accept it, and time because exchanging and fighting with words is always longer and harder than talking with swords. But that’s the choice they made.
Lycaon feels a bit better - but still thinks he needs to change things faster, to make sure his parent’s efforts wasn’t in vain and also, because he really wants to make those people who praise him feel like they’re praising him for something else than being born.
Just before Willy’s departure - as the former Emperor he visits some places to check if everything is alright and if it is not he tries to ease Lycaon’s burden to the best of his abilities - for Boramas, Lycaon tells him his master plan to make the Senate admit Northeners are like them, and they should help each other instead of trying to push the other down,
“I’ll reveal the truth about me!”
Former Emperor Wilhelm refuses - Lycaon is a human blessed by the Goddess since he descends from Seiros, he cannot tell the world Nabateans exist  “Fodlan is not ready yet. We haven’t found the ones who helped Nemesis!”
But Lycaon is stubborn - and says he’s proud to be both human and nabatean - his birth means different people can live together, of course he won’t reveal anything about the “golden weapons”, but as the Emperor it is his duty to guide Fodlan, and he’ll show Fodlan that yes, northerners or Enbarrians, Nabateans or humans, everyone can live together and work together.
Wilhelm is still doubtful, but trusts him (that’d be the last time he sees him alive).
Lycaon tells his plan about the big reveal for the next Curia session to his Hresvelg family, because they are family and if he has been an ass before, maybe they can rekindle their relationship now - he actually signs his death warrant (that was already being written) : if Lycaon reveals he is not human, then even after his natural death (in centuries?), they will never get to inherit the throne because the throne would have to go to his “lizardspawns”, and their human line will just cease to exist! If they have some importance now, it’s because they are from Emperor Wilhelm’s family, but if Lycaon reveals the truth about his mother - then they will just be regular humans, compared to the Goddess’s direct line!
And so they plan for a surprise party, telling him the session starts earlier today because his niece wants to tell him something - and all Senators, even the non-Hresvelg ones who see him as a tyrant, participateù! They slaughter him, a Hresvelg even calling him a “degenerate beast spawn” - Lycaon dies cursing his relatives, while apologising to his parents for not being an Emperor able to guide Fodlan as they would have wanted.
(Thales who ran away from the northern operations after Epimenides was blasted to smithereens finds a rekindled hope, those human-beasts can turn against themselves, but also against Sothis’s kin on their own! Imagine what they could do with a little push, maybe Nemesis wasn’t just a one of a kind fool, and they can create another one?)
Lycaon’s assassination is spread all around Enbarr, and the perpetrators of course blame his retinue of Northerners - so they have to run away (with a Hresvelg in the oven?) and Willy picks up what’s left of his beloved son.
After Seiros’s pathetic attempts (who ran from the place she was hunting Momo to Enbarr when she felt something was “wrong” with Lycaon) to hit him with the SoC to “wake him” up - they agree to call an end to the WoH - a pointless war for Willy because in the end no one can accept people who are different, and a pointless war for Rhea, because by wanting justice for her deceased family she wasn’t able to protect her living one.
Lycaon is entombed in the Holy Tomb - Wilhelm promises his descendants (especially the great grand daughter who offered sympathies and swore to avenge her uncle by eradicating those damn northeners) he won’t tell the truth to Seiros and they’re free to fuck off, but there will be payback one day and they should be prepared for it - and Rhea immediately works on building the Monastery and preparing a plan to resurrect Sothis (sure she will be scolded, but Cethleann, Lycaon, her siblings, and Cichol’s wife will return!).

is the main protagonist in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. As an Avatar, their name, gender, and birthday are customizable. Byleth serves as a professor at Garreg Mach Monastery. They possess the mysterious Crest of Flames and can wield the Sword of the Creator. Byleth has a very subdued personality and has difficulty expressing emotion. As a newborn, they neither laughed nor cried. People they are especially close to, such as Jeralt, are able to tell how they are feeling despite their limited emotional visualizations. A handful of their students note that their outward expressions hardly vary. Some express surprise whenever they simply smile. According to Alois, this trait of theirs may in part come from their father, as Jeralt does not show his emotions easily either and can also be difficult to read. This should not be taken as them not having emotions at all however. Due to Jeralt concealing a lot of information about the world, they are showing curiosity about the influence of the Church of Seiros, the mystery of the Crests, and the dynamic of the three nations once they were immersed into the Officers Academy. Their stoic demeanor slowly changes over the course of the Academy phase. Jeralt notices that they have become more expressive over the first few months, likely a result of the bonds they have formed with their students. Despite appearing indifferent, Byleth can be perceptive of their students and fellow faculty's problems and serve as a great source of emotional support for their issues. As the story unfolds, their emotions become more dynamic including feeling true sorrow, vengeance, and happiness. Byleth has somewhat of a reputation from their earlier years in their father's mercenary corps for being a fearless and skilled warrior, gaining the moniker of 'Ashen Demon', due to the way they seemingly emotionlessly cut down their enemies in combat. This seems to be somewhat of a sensitive subject for them, as they seem uncomfortable when Hanneman mentions their moniker in their C support. It is notable that in the beginning of the game, Sothis refuses to let the player progress if they do not acknowledge their humanity to her, refuting the "Ghost" and "Demon" options, so it can be inferred that Byleth is uncomfortable with the Ashen Demon moniker because it dehumanizes them. The three house leaders of the Officer's Academy attest to their martial prowess and have deep, profound respect for their abilities and guidance in battle and in the classroom. They alongside the other students continue to refer to them as teacher or professor even after the time-skip. The three house leaders also deeply regret that Byleth had not chosen their house if they are not teaching theirs, seeing the value in their strengths. According to both genders of Byleth in Heroes, they do not actually know the distinction between a friend and an ally due to their unusual childhood. Nevertheless, they are well liked by the student body, even those not in in their initial house. Their wisdom ultimately shapes the outcome of the events of Three Houses providing council and guidance to the house leader they chose to teach, helping to shape them into better warriors and leaders. Several students can develop an interest in them and eventually switch over to their house if not already in them. This results in them also joining their faction during the War, even those from enemy nations defecting to their cause, thus changing their fate. Those who do not join will often express regret facing them in battle. However, some students and faculty members, especially in the Crimson Flower route, will instead express outrage at them, vowing to kill them by their own hands. According to their profile in Cindered Shadows, Byleth has interests in helping and listening to people, likes swords, reliable allies, smiles, and being trusted, and has no apparent dislikes.

Rhea’s Twelve Children
Okay. I said I was gonna chew on this once I was finished playing Silver Snow. Welp, I’ve finished playing Silver Snow, and good grief, did I get something to chew on.
[CN/TW: Unethical experimentation, attempted death of personality, abuse (and this holds true regardless of what you think the origins of the twelve to be)]
(I don’t don’t call my avatar ‘Byleth,’ but since this is a general meta post, I’ll be calling her ‘Byleth’ simply for clarity.
And obviously, if you think of Rhea as a benevolent person with benevolent goals—I don’t, and you should take that into account before reading any further. If Mobile fucks up again and eats the Read More in the Mobile version of this post, I’m sorry, and please just scroll past.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up there is what is effectively Rhea’s deathbed confession in Silver Snow. She relates how she created twelve people to serve as vessels for Sothis, only for each attempt to end in failure. Then, she talks about how, when Byleth was born, her mother was dying and Byleth herself appeared to be either dying or stillborn, and that she used Sothis’s Crest Stone to revive her—and that later, she tried to use Byleth the way she had tried to use the twelve who came before her.
It is, at present, unclear as to whether the twelve were Rhea’s biological children, or people she created via magic. To me, I think the former explanation is by far the most likely. Verdant Wind is the only route I haven’t gotten through, and while I know that one is lore-heavy, it seems to have a lot more to do with the general (true) history of Fódlan than with Byleth’s origins and how those origins play into Rhea’s machinations. The only person who seems to have had the power to create life by such means as Rhea would have had to in order to have literally “created bodies” is Sothis, and Rhea doesn’t have Sothis’s powers. I have thus far read nothing in this game to suggest that there is magic that can create a person. Given the lack of evidence pointing in any other direction, the simplest explanation is the one most likely to be true: these twelve people were Rhea’s biological children, brought into the world via sexual reproduction, and she refers to them as “created bodies” in an attempt to distance herself from them as much as possible.
And even if they aren’t her biological children, even if she clearly does not regard them as such, these people were Rhea’s children in one sense of the word or another. Biological children or created via magic, she gave them life.
So. Rhea had twelve children, and each time she had one, she brought them into the world with the intent of snuffing out everything that made them who they were so that she could give her mother’s soul a body to pilot and use to interact with the physical plane again. Twelve times, she did this, and never seriously thought she should stop. Well, more like thirteen.
She doesn’t regard these people as her children; this much is clear from the outset. She consistently refers to them as “failures”, unable to resist the urge to objectify them and reduce everything that they were down to the base function for which she brought them into this world—and to imply that everything they were was meaningless in the face of their being unable to be what she wanted them to be. It is, at best, unclear as to what just happened to these people once Rhea realized that their bodies wouldn’t be able to act as vessels for Sothis. Byleth’s mother was still very young when she died—depending on the time of year when she was born, she was either nineteen or twenty—and Rhea, as we have seen, is murderously possessive of Sothis’s Crest Stone.
I can’t speak much on this since we have basically no information on how she responded when she finally realized that each of the children were unable to become vessels for Sothis. Nemesis was slain in Imperial Year 91, and the game starts in Imperial Year 1180. That’s 1,089 years; divided by 12, that’s 90.75 years. Even if you assume Rhea waited a while before her first try at resurrecting her mother, that’s more than enough time for each of them to have died of old age and/or natural causes, and for Rhea to simply harvest the Crest Stone after their deaths. The fact that we know at least one of them died at the ripe old age of twenty (at the oldest) gives us even more leeway. We don’t know what happened to each of the eleven who preceded Byleth’s mother when Rhea realized that they wouldn’t be able to fulfill the role she created them to fill. We likely never will.
Rhea probably didn’t kill them, but she certainly didn’t view them as people in their own right, and certainly not as anyone to be truly cherished for who they were. They were, after all, “failures.”
This, on its own, is completely unconscionable. I don’t know what else to call having twelve children (or creating twelve children by means other than the typical), and then trying to snuff out everything they are so their bodies can be used as a vessel for another soul to interact with the physical plane without going into phrasing that could pass into the realm of deliberately inflammatory. All of the stuff Rhea did in the past in regards to the twelve was unconscionable, but let’s talk about what she did to #13.
It is established that Rhea saved Byleth’s life by implanting Sothis’s Crest Stone into her heart as a newborn. If that is where she had stopped, I would be able to say, without reservation, that this was a purely altruistic act. I would be able to say that it was a benevolent act. How else do you describe someone resorting to drastic measures to save a newborn’s life, if it doesn’t involve selling their soul to a demon or something?
But that’s not where this story ended.
Jeralt notes in his diary that both he and newborn Byleth have been put under surveillance by the church; he had to fake the baby’s death and take advantage of her utter silence to successfully smuggle her out of the monastery. Rhea had no intention of letting Byleth slip out from her grasp, and the fact that she doesn’t even try to feed Jeralt some edited version of what happened, doesn’t try to forestall his worries with an edited story of what happened when Byleth was born, doesn’t speak of someone who’s particularly willing to cooperate with Jeralt in the raising of this child. Her intent, her sole intent, is to make sure Byleth isn’t taken out from under her gaze. Or, to be more accurate, to ensure that her mother’s Crest Stone isn’t carried off to where she can’t retrieve it from.
When Jeralt and Byleth are brought back to the monastery at the start of the game is where Rhea starts her nearly year-long campaign of aggressively grooming Byleth to ensure that she trusts Rhea as much as possible, is as compliant to Rhea’s wishes as possible. Though the term ‘grooming’ is often used to describe sexual abuse, it doesn’t have to be sexual in nature, and in this case, I can’t think of a better way to call what Rhea is doing.
Rhea shows Byleth an unusual amount of favor right from the start, by making her a professor at the Officers Academy, which is a prestigious position and would, as Seteth points out, never usually be given to a young stranger who hasn’t been thoroughly vetted and whose qualifications haven’t been extensively verified. She is constantly complimentary towards Byleth, and entrusts her, a near-stranger, with the Sword of the Creator, even though it is a weapon both hugely important to the Church of Seiros and incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. Their supports take place in Rhea’s bedchamber, far away from prying eyes. Rhea often sends Jeralt out of the monastery on long-term missions. It’s noted over and over again, by multiple people, that Rhea treats Byleth very differently than how she treats everyone else, and that Byleth has definitely been receiving special treatment.
Rhea spent a year aggressively grooming Byleth, trying to cultivate their absolute trust as quickly as possible. All of this, to ensure that when Rhea asked Byleth to sit on Sothis’s throne, to do the thing she confidently assumed would snuff out everything that made Byleth who they were, Byleth would do it with no fuss, and no hesitation.
So. Twelve times she had children she intended to turn into her mother, but thirteen times she’s tried to turn someone into her mother, after all.
Not once did it occur to her that maybe she should stop.
And yeah, she expresses apparently genuine remorse when explaining all this to Byleth in Silver Snow, but it’s easy to be remorseful when you’re on your deathbed. It’s easy to be remorseful for your wrongdoings when you know you’re not going to be around to experience the consequences of them for much longer. I’m not saying it’s not genuine. I’m saying it’s not terribly meaningful. And even here, Rhea was talking to Byleth with the intent of achieving a goal, her goal being to ensure that Byleth would accept the responsibility of ruling over Fódlan after she herself was gone. She told the truth, but because it was the only card she had left to play.
Yeah, Silver Snow gave me a lot to chew on, alright.

during   her   time   in   enbarr   ,   mina   stumbled   across   …   a   certain   boy   ,   unbeknownst   to   her   at   the   time   ,   her   step   -   cousin   jasper   .   now   his   father   ,   being   able   to   make   the   connection   once   he   hears   her   name   being   called   by   hevring   ,   went   to   lorelei   afterwards   &   was   like   ,   hey   so   go   back   to   your   daughter   ,   she’s   betrothed   to   one   of   the   imperial   princes   ,   that   could   be   of   use   to   us   ,   etc   .   etc   .   &   like   ,   well   ,   she   did   .   mina   ,   after   years   of   being   estranged   from   her   mother   ,   was   swaddled   up   quickly   in   an   embrace   under   a   false   guise   of   genuine   wish   to   reconnect   .   she   felt   odd   seeing   her   daughter   with   a   hair   color   so   foreign   ,   but   as   the   shitty   adults   do   ,   she   doesn’t   make   a   note   of   it   .   mina   was   introduced   officially   to   all   of   her   step   -   cousins   ,   as   well   as   her   own   half   -   brothers   .   truthfully   she   tried   her   best   to   connect   with   them   all   ,   but   the   only   one   who   stuck   was   jasper   .   not   that   she   minded   —   despite   all   the   negativity   surrounding   him   ,   she   still   saw   the   good   .   she   always   did   .
years   later   &   more   tragedy   struck   the   empire   .   the   insurrection   of   the   seven   ,   a   soft   coup   ;   her   uncle   participated   in   stealing   power   from   the   emperor   –   the   individual   she   came   to   know   more   personally   as   her   future   father   -   in   -   law   .   &   then   ……..   it   happened   .   three   years   after   the   insurrection   ,   wilhelm   (   +   the   other   imperial   children   )   were   just   .   gone   ?   no   one   spoke   about   them   ,   &   she   would   be   scolded   each   time   she   brought   it   up   .   her   uncle   was   tense   ,   perhaps   due   to   the   arrangement   that   the   emperor   literally   was   unable   to   break   ,   but   mina   once   more   turned   back   to   the   church   for   solace   .   edelgard   came   back   eventually   ,   white   hair   similar   to   her   own   ,   but   none   of   her   siblings   followed   ,   so   mina   mourned   for   them   in   silence   .
years   &   years   past   &   her   uncle   started   up   a   search   for   a   new   husband   ;   while   she   moved   on   from   wilhelm   ,   he’ll   still   be   in   her   memory   &   heart   .   even   when   her   heart   attached   itself   to   randolph   ,   &   they   slowly   started   courting   ,   despite   her   uncle   strongly   advising   her   against   it   .......   idk   they   been   together   for   awhile   now   technically   ?
ok   so   personality   basically   ,   she   is   beagles   mom   !   very   …   i   would   say   naive   ,   because   how   she   doesn’t   realize   98%   of   her   family   is   using   her   ,   but   ..   but   like   .   she’s   !!!   embodiment   of   honey   &   wildfire   are   both   golden   ,   softness   is   not   weakness   .   she   is   also   a   horse   girl   so   jot   that   down   ,   you   know   ?   find   her   in   the   stables   pretty   often   .   mina’s   uno   reverse   edelgard   in   the   sense   that   while   edelgard   is   angry   at   the   society   they   live   in   /   the   church   +   goddess   +   crest   systems   ,   etc   .   mina   ??   doesn’t   hold   any   hatred   for   what   happened   to   her   .   it’s   more   like   ,   she’s   going   to   take   her   trauma   &   do   the   absolutely   best   she   can   because   if   she   lets   it   go   to   waste   then   all   of   what   she   went   through   would’ve   been   for   nothing   &   she   can’t   let   that   happen   .
she   agrees   with   edelgard’s   position   of   how   crests   shouldn’t   dictate   the   way   people   live   ,   but   also   she   still   has   her   faith   ??   like   ..   *   channels   all   the   cf   endings   that   have   the   church   being   rebuilt   despite   under   supervision   ..   bc   she   wld   have   helped   *
uh   idk   if   any   of   this   intro   makes   sense   but   like   here   we   are   babies   !!   i   am   tired   &   have   three   more   to   write   so   i   am   ….   TIRED   .

i’ve been thinking about this for a bit and i haven’t seen anyone else try to post about it so eh, why not give it a shot myself
note: obviously spoilers for fire emblem three houses (specifically Verdant Wind), but also, since a lot of people are new to the fire emblem series with fire emblem three houses, i’m warning that there’s also going to be spoilers for fire emblem awakening in this post, so if you wanna go back and play awakening maybe don’t look at this post yet
anyway!
Let me describe a character situation to you for a moment;
This character is the leader of a religious organization that believes in a draconic god. Said god died many years ago, killed by a human. This character now wants to bring that god back. To do so, they need a human vessel to take on the spirit of the god. Eventually, this character has a newborn child that, when grown, could act as such a vessel; however, soon after, the child is stolen away and hidden, raised away from this character. The child grows up into an adult, and through a series of events, our religious leader character comes back into contact with them. After finding them again, this character now resumes their plan to bring their god back.
Now, while we’re hyped up on Fire Emblem Three Houses, the character I just described... sounds a lot like Rhea huh?
But it also describes Validar from Fire Emblem Awakening.
Here’s what I’m saying: Getting a character like Rhea is what happens when you take a character like Validar and flesh them out to try and make them more realistic
Obviously, there are some surface differences between the character. The god in question that they’re aiming to bring back, for one; with Validar, Grima is the Fell Dragon and wants to destroy the world and is pretty clearly meant to be the plain flat out villain with no redeemable qualities. Meanwhile, with Rhea and Sothis we... actually don’t know what Sothis was like, as a god, but we know that Seiros is supposed to be a savior to humanity.
But thinking about it... are they really that different, if the purpose is to flesh the idea out and make it more realistic?
In Fire Emblem Awakening, you don’t get much of an understanding of Grima as a character, all you know is that Grima just wants to destroy the world. However, in Fire Emblem Heroes, when you summon Grima and get to the level 40 dialogue conversation, it does provide a bit of an explanation: Grima says,
“You know full well how I detest humans.
They have no qualms asking for divine assistance when it meets their fickle needs...
But how quick they are to shun their benefactors once they get what they desire.
They become arrogant and make the same mistake repeatedly, incapable of learning the folly of their ways.
They claim their actions are for the good of others, but that’s merely a show of self-indulgence.
Humans are selfish. And the ugliness of mankind has turned me repulsive.
It’s the world that wants me to be evil.”
This is not the full conversation, just a bit of the beginning and the end is shaved off for space reasons, but the important part of what we need is there.
It doesn’t outright tell you anything specific, but if you look at what Grima says and try to put together why Grima would think in such a way, the picture starts to form; back in the days before Grima “died”, humans asked them for help again and again (“They have no qualms asking for divine assistance”) but never gave Grima any credit or thanks (”how quick they are to shun their benefactors once they get what they desire.”)
Because of this Grima sees humans as selfish and can only look to the bad in them. Grima turned their back on humanity
“Well, okay,” You say, “But what does this have to do with Rhea and Validar being similar? Why did we take a detour to talk about Grima?”
The next step would be to look at Sothis and see her view on humanity, but... we can’t do that. We know nothing about Sothis from before the beginning of the game, and during the game she doesn’t have any memories to speak of. We are entirely in the dark on what Sothis would have thought before.
On the other hand. We do have what Rhea/Seiros thinks about humanity.
To Rhea, humans are the ones that stole her mother from her. Humans are the ones who slaughtered her family. She punishes humans as she sees fit to make them pay for these crimes, but because of her immortality, she can hold a grudge for a long, long time and by the time the events of Three Houses are coming to pass, humanity has long forgotten the sins that Rhea is ultimately punishing them for, because for her, it will never be enough. Rhea is ruthless to her enemies because she believes that they deserve it.
When you look into it, the founding of these two ideologies aren’t necessarily black and white.
As for the Church of Seiros itself versus the Grimleal, I feel like this just further proves the point. With the Grimleal, we don’t learn... anything about what they actually believe in or what values they have, just that they want to bring back Grima. With the Church of Seiros we know that they believe in her because the teachings of the Church of Seiros tell people that the goddess has gifted the land and everything else to them and that’s why they should look up to her and thank her. It’s still not a fully developed religion, but it’s a step above the Grimleal.
So what’s my conclusion?
I believe that Rhea and the Church of Seiros are just a more developed version of Validar, Grima, and the Grimleal. And proof of the idea that everyone is a hero in their own eyes. I see Rhea as a complex, in depth character, but ultimately I would place her as a villain. A damn good villain! An amazing villain! But a villain indeed. At the end of the day it’s a “cool motive! still murder” because while I understand the way she acts and I can see why she thinks the way she does, she still uses her power and her beliefs to execute those that don’t agree with her and punish people that didn’t commit (and at this point, don’t even remember) the crimes she’s damning them for. Rhea sees Byleth as a means to bring back Sothis, and even though yes, Sothis is her mother and all, that also means that she doesn’t see Byleth as their own person but as a means to an end.

What I guessed right + future theories
I’ve finished the Golden Deer route aaand I finally have an access to a break so have my take on it after the break :D
Things that I guessed right:
Sothis Paralogue: This is when I started to suspect that Sothis is Seiros’s mother. Sothis said she had lived in Zanado. Seiros referred to Zanado and said “He’s gone now, Mother” in the intro. And it was Sothis’s memory, that we know.
Jeralt’s death: Rhea compares your loss to hers when she mentions she lost her mother long ago. Impossible to not connect to the previous theory, this is when I guessed Rhea is actually Seiros.
Jeralt’s diary: No heartbeat. Since Rhea explicitly said she intervened with your newborn self to save you, this is when I started to suspect that your heart is actually the Sword of the Creator creststone.
Flayn x Ignatz C Support: Was enough for me to suspect strongly that Flayn is St. Cathleann making Seteth St. Cichol ♥ ♥ ♥. I totally didn’t see them being father and child so their paralogue was an amazing shock but after that.. it all added up. I’m sorry I found the official mentions of Cichol and Cathleann being father and daughter very late in the game, else I would be 100% sure sooner. But then again, this gave me the final confirmation on Macuil’s map and that was amazing. Seteth being all “Well, how do you fare, yeah, I’m with these humans, btw Seiros is in dire need bro.” “Dun care bro, I want to kill them all” with a Macuil Dragon xD Is there a hotter way to confirm that one of your fav characters is really a 1000yr old saint? ♥ This is also when I got confirmed that Rhea is Seiros. Very fruitful map.
Lysithea A support: A short while after Lysithea revealed the nature of her two crests and white hair, I realized that there was another white haired person I knew secretly had two crests... (Flame Emperor actually used Crest of Flames on me shortly before removing their mask) So I didn’t doubt for a second that Edelgard also got one crest implanted and had originally different hair color. Unintentionally I actually killed her with Lysithea and their dialogue confimred what I already knew. But this is all I know so far, I wonder about the details.
THE MISSILES:  Heck, no, I didn’t suspect a thing in the fort because THIS IS A FRICKING FIRE EMBLEM GAME, YOU DON’T GET BOMBED IN FE RIGHT???. But when I saw Shambhalla map preview and all the circuits and stuff I was like... GODS WERE THOSE THINGS ACTUAL MISSILES?????? WHAAT THE FFFFFF?!??!!!. (That was so crazy, but I loved it.) So yes, then we got the cutscene with more missiles and this time with a clear shot of the bad guys logo on them, you know, where usually the USA or USSR credits is in movies in case the victims care xD Add the dubstep or what it is and heck, this is one of my fav aspect of the game xD Even though it never got properly explained.
???Theory???
So we have a modern underground that clearly uses technology and has access to... what? A satelite? Drones? Something that can launch actual missiles. Are we actually playing a post-apo Earth scenario? Were the people Sothis came to... us? Was the war that ravaged the land thousands of years ago our modern civilisation going against an alien magical being, the progenitor god and her kids? Were we trying to break free from our perspective? And when we lost, some of us hid in top secret military bases and did, whatever, combine technology and magic Sothis brought or something? This is the only scenario that makes remotely sense to me. I have no idea if there is more explained in the game as people tend to say that Church route is the same as GD info-wise, just less satisfying. Is this explained in the game now? (Or maybe DLC will happen???). Honestly, I really really need to know ♥

do we have sources on sothis faith existing before seiros or is it just fanon?
The dev notes said some nabateans were living in Fodlan, outside from Zanado and spent time/ruled/guided humans there.
Maybe they were the ones to have spread the Sothis faith?
I can't give you a formal source anon, I can just say it is heavily implied, from Flayn's birth (she was born in Enbarr that existed for 1400 years i.e. 300-ish years before the Empire) because her parents met in a church.
The Church of Seiros was created in -42.
Maybe Seteth found his wife in -42, had a kid in -41 and joined the war effort in 32.
But then it doesn't hold, because Flayn and Seteth mention Rhodos Coast and their home there (at least that's what I got from Flayn's line in her paralogue saying she and her mom loved to spend time there), in -42 there's no Zanado and Nabateans have been hunted to near extinction.
Seteth would leave, to the northern reaches (where Nemesis and pals lived), with his newborn daughter and his wife, Enbarr, where his sister resided, to settle in enemy territory? I... don't think so.
Most probable answer is Cichol left Zanado, went to Enbarr, met his wife in a church dedicated to his mom's worship or something like that, they married, had a kid and moved out to Rhodos. Then Nemesis'n'Dudes partied, Cichol and his fam were roaming around the land "in seclusion" and met Rhea - pretending to be "Seiros" - in Enbarr.
So, to answer your question, I can't say 120%, but 99,7% Sothisism, or another form of worship, predated the Church of Seiros.

Something I wanted to do some days ago but real life is a pain and now it’d be bad taste to piggy back on an old post
About the Jeralt = Wilhelm theory and Jeralt being actually Edel’s ancestor
We know that Wilhelm doesn’t have a recorded death (there must be a statue of him in Enbarr’s imperial palace?) but his son succeded him and his grandson became Emperor when the war with Nemesis and his pals ended.
But does that mean that Wilhelm could be Jeralt?
Nope.
Rhea: Since you are here, shall I tell you about the Jeralt that I knew? By the look of it, you haven't heard much about his time at the monastery, have you? When I first met Jeralt, he was quite young. Why, he could not even grow a full beard at that point! On one fateful occasion, the band of mercenaries he belonged to fought alongside the Knights of Seiros. I was traveling with the knights at the time, and Jeralt jumped in front of an attack meant for me. He was gravely wounded. On the verge of death. I tended to his wounds in a desperate attempt to save his life. Thankfully, my efforts were not in vain. Jeralt managed to escape a seemingly certain death. I made arrangements for him to receive further care at Garreg Mach. The moment he was deemed fully recovered, I invited him to join the knights.
(taken from the wiki)
So from this support we understand several things:
Rhea was travelling with the Knights of Seiros
Jeralt was a mercenary
Rhea tended to his wounds (and most likely gave him her blood to save him)
Rhea sent him to Garreg Mach to be healed
It is known from another convo with an NPC that the Monastery of Garreg Mach isn’t that old, iirc, Garreg Mach was created by “a previous archbishop” because Fodlan needed a military academy to train nobles to defend their lands against Almyrans or other invaders (??? I don’t remember, I think a NPC near the Cathedral says so but when... i forgot).
Anyways, it’d be logical that Garreg Mach didn’t exist during the War of Heroes, given how Enbarr is Seiros’ HQ and I doubt Seiros, her bros, Cethleann + randoms who were the first believers of “the church of Seiros” would have been able to protect the monastery from Nemesis’ forces or keep some form of independance.
Which raises the question, if Seiros’ HQ was Enbarr, what happened after the war? Rhea faked her death and moved her followers to Garreg Mach? Or the Imperial family wanted more independance from the Church? Did she have a fallout with the following Emperors?
So Jeralt should be younger than Garreg Mach but from the DLC where he apparently wooed Sitri with stories about the Alliance and Loog, he should be older than the Kingdom and the Alliance?
We don’t know the lifespan of patient zero from draconic blood transfusion. They live longer than regular humans when they’re not murdered, but up to when? We don’t know about Wilhelm - Jeralt seemed to age since the CG he had with Sitri (or maybe he was tired with life and his BS so he looks older but biologically wasn’t that much older??).
Also, if Jeralt had really been Wilhelm, he’d have had more of a reaction to Seteth and Flayn - having known them when they were Cichol and Cethleann.
When Rhea mentions Wilhelm in CF, she only does so regarding Edel - not Billy.
So Rhea did, in fact, gave her blood to two different guys - we don’t have any context for Wilhelm, but for Jeralt it was to save him from a certain death.
And she even invited Jeralt, who had now draconic superpowers, to join the Knights of Seiros - not to join the Church, but the Knights!
Rhea and Billy’s C support is also interesting as Rhea reveals that she knows Jeralt finds her terrifying. Is it because he has seen her execute or pass death sentences to randoms who tried to kill her or attack the church - which would be rich coming from a mercenary whose job is, uh... to sew blankets for newborns, is that it? to use weapons to defend/kill people your client paid you to do so?
Meaning that either:
Jeralt think that Rhea sentencing people to death is scary :’( but killing them for money is A-okay
he saw her using her powers, idk, to Seiros-punch a bandit and came to the conclusion that she wasn’t human
put one and one together and understood that how come she’s still alive without having any wrinkles
“i drank her blood and i became immortal with super powers what the fuck”
he saw her turn into the immaculate one?
Which also means, for Rhea, that, well Jeralt might have a clue to her real identity and yet she doesn’t take any actions to silence him - which is a big sign of trust from her part (and then Jeralt shits on it because his baby doesn’t cry and surely Rhea must have done something - poor Jeralt doesn’t know that mothers in JRPGs always die during childbirth ).
With all of these clues we can suppose that if Jeralt doesn’t his age (which might be true) it might be a lie - he knows and doesn’t want to tell it to Alois because Alois annoys him - or not a lie he genuinely forgot (i lived through the secession of the Kingdom and the Alliance i am not supposed to be that old am I and i saw Rhea using 4 different wigs during the last century what the fuck is going on but she insisted on not being called Rhea) still, this is the guy whose child doesn’t know how old he is so...
