Stupidly long playlist to go with the stupidly long fic. In short, it follows a kind of meandering path from Icelandic youth to swaggering mercenary behaviour on the continent, to service in the Varangian guard in Constantinople. It is very much in an order I chose, and should be listened to in order. I designed it to have them coming closer together and parting ways at various points, and it follows a very rough outline I have for three 'books'' worth of adventures.

Sumer is icumen in - you may know from Wicker Man soundtrack? Everyone's go to creepy folk song because it's one of the oldest. Included because of cuckoo theme. This song has the same title as poem by Nezahualcoyotl, meaning 'I am Sad', though this wasn't composed until the fifteenth century. Get Out of My House is based on The Shining, so there's the link to Native American land, and there's shapeshifting in the song too. Seems a good angry bb Cassian song. Slowpoke Unleash Trippy New Music Video and Two-Song Smash

SLOWPOKE belong to that strange, and because of that elite, group of bands that relish in what should be called omnimetal. The St. John's collaboration of Ben Chapman-Smith (bass, vox), Cameron Legge (guitar), Adam Young (drums) float effortlessly (and at time jerk violently) between rock and metal subgenres, grabbing a little of this, dabbing on a little bit of that, a joyful (if jagged) potpourri of sludge, desert, stoner-doom, psychedelic and prog.

We introduced you to Slowpoke last year, midsummer, when they delivered the sizzling stoner romp "Sid the Cat," with grizzly guest vocals from Al Yeti Bones of Gypsy Chief Goliath (such a great song). It's part of their self-titled debut, which I heartily recommend if you're into the Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, or Die Like Gentlemen. Even if you're not, don't walk away just yet because Slowpoke will surprise you.

Through and through, the album feels just like friends jamming together (and having a good time of it) with flashes of brilliance along the way, but above all an experience -- one that offers both reprieve from the brutal ambiguity of our present age ("Stony Iommi") and the courage to square up to it ("Slumlord").

You're about to hear those two very songs sans interruption in a rousing live performance from the band's visit to Argentia (read it again, I had to). I thought it was quite a trek for the band to do a film, considering the band's moorings in Newfoundland and Labrador. But it is in fact not Argentina but Argentia, a Canadian seaport.

Says the band:

"We chose these two tunes not only because they flow into each other well, but they also run the gamut of what we do as a band. We packed in high energy punk, big riffs, shoegazy effects wizardry, and even a meditative atmospheric part too."

The 12-minute film is situated in an alley that overlooks rolling hills spotted with patches of grass. The whole environment seems to welcome Slowpoke’s scruffiness.

In the summer of 2021, we recorded "Live in Argentina" with the help of Johnny Rawkhard, Rick Hollett, Glen Tizzard, Rick Tizzard, and Stephany Donahue. The music video features live performances of “Stony Iommi” and “Slumlord” against the backdrop of an abandoned bunker off the Argentia airstrip in Argentia, Newfoundland. We hope you enjoy watching it half as much as we enjoyed making it. Special thanks to Arts NL and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for providing funding for this project.

Our trip begins with a groovy bass riff and caustic vocals, joined by a cobble of punk and math rock. Two minutes in, and things get trippy. I must have gone into a trance or something, because I found myself in the mood to pull some to-dos off the shelf. There's an instrumental passage that goes on in rhapsodic fashion for a good bundle of minutes, building into something like Kyuss meets Meshuggah and Latin dance.

I swear, by the finish I was ready to tackle things I'd been lagging on for months. So there you go. Slowpoke could probably make bank doing the late night infomercial circuit. Their music really does impart energy.
