Starlight CH38 Sneak Peek
(it never fails to amuse me that my previews are always around the 1k mark)
Tumblr media
Chapter 38: Heaven is Not Fit to House a Love Like You and I (Opening Scene)
Tumblr media
There was something insidious pervading the air around Crimson Beech High.
Ask any of the students, and they’d say it was the stress of the upcoming Community Outreach Day events — some had performance jitters, others were bracing for the gruelling embarrassment that was parent chaperones, a vocal minority of students —Venandis, mostly, Gabriel noted with scorn— complained at any given opportunity that being forcibly roped into signing up for activities kind of undercut the whole volunteer angle Principal Yao was going for.
Astoria would hear none of it. The whole point had been to manufacture some good, old fashioned inter-coven cooperation, after all. Now, more than ever, the vampires needed all the encouragement they could get.
Another week had come and gone with not a whisper of rebel activity; the uneasy stillness left them waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It stole in quietly, turning the fledglings irritable and jumpy, suspicious of every last buzz of activity about the town. Far from working together, the young Clements and Venandis were all but at each other’s throats again.
Worse, Gabriel had barely spoken to Cas all week.
He’d managed fine during their training sessions at the Nexus — relying on a feigned composure he’d somehow desperately stitched together, he was able to make it through the daylight hours without falling to pieces. He’d see Cas at their training sessions, even sparred with him once or twice, gone about their research into the Creators without betraying so much as a flicker of emotion.
But the minute he got back to his big, empty house, everything would unravel at the seams.
He’d collapse onto one of Cas’s couches, crammed in amongst the moving boxes and piles of furniture he still hadn’t bothered to store properly, breathing in the heady, familiar scent of his cologne that clung to the leather cushions, too wrung out to even cry.
He knew he was only delaying the inevitable.
But listening to Cas’s apology meant opening himself up to the reasons Cas had done what he’d done, and that meant finally acknowledging the small kernel of truth that rubbed Gabriel raw every time he tried to move around it. Like grit between his muscles. Sand, painfully forming into a blood-hued pearl.
A tiny kernel of truth that whispered Cas was right. That he’d only set into motion a future Gabriel always knew was coming: Luca was a human in a vampire’s world. Their only real options were dead or turned.
And loath as he was to admit it —as disgusting a betrayal to his family though it may be— there was a part of him that was grateful Cas had forced the issue. That he’d spared Gabriel from having to make that decision himself.
Gabriel couldn’t stomach the thought that Luca’s eventual turning might actually bring him relief. Happiness, even. So, petty as it was, his guilt and shame had manifested as anger, which in turn had become an entire week of giving Cas the cold shoulder.
Needless to say, Gabriel wasn’t exactly proud of himself.
But what else could he do?
Apologise, for a start, Gabriel thought, a flicker of guilt chasing through his sternum.
Sighing, he shouldered his satchel, heading out of his classroom as the bell rang and wandering out to find Luca in the middle of the quad.
They were crouched beside a collapsible folding table, the ground around them littered with glassware and arts and crafts supplies.
‘Hey,’ Gabriel said, joining him. ‘What is all this? Is it an Outreach Day thing?’
Luca pinned him with a withering look.
‘This is a “both my boyfriends are stubborn idiots” thing,’ Luca grumbled. ‘You’ve been ignoring Cas all week, and when he doesn’t get attention, he gets sulky, and when he gets sulky, I have to put up with it. He already shoved a jock into a locker this morning before first bell.’
‘Wow.’ Gabriel blinked. ‘Honestly, I’m more surprised that Cas was actually at school on time.’
‘The two of you could run a masterclass on sulking,’ Luca muttered under their breath. They groaned as they hauled the table onto its side. ‘Help me with this?’
With Gabriel’s assistance, Luca set up some kind of interpretive art installation, arranging a number of glass jars in varying heights and sizes on the table. He watched on, intrigued, as Luca filled the jars with water and some kind of coloured dye pigments, stirring until the water hit a good balance of colour and transparency.
Thin, noonday light filtered through the jars, washing the quad in prismatic stripes of colour. Like a rainbow after a storm, Gabriel thought. Like shimmering stained glass, fluid and mutable.
It was actually rather pretty.
‘Okay, you need to tell me what you’re up to, here.’
Luca grabbed a roll of tape, tearing a piece off with their teeth to affix a sign to the table’s edge. ‘Cas needs enrichment.’
“Glasses Half Full”, the sign read. “A Study in Optimism”.
Luca took a step back to examine the display critically, arms crossed over his chest.
‘What do you think?’ Luca asked. ‘Is this pretentious enough, or should I throw in a “Live, Laugh, Love” quote somewhere?’
Despite himself, Gabriel snorted. ‘Oh, it’s great. I think he’ll hate it.’
‘Perfect.’ Glancing around, Luca nudged a number of rocks with their toe, kicking them away from decorative planter boxes bordering the quad and moving them pointedly closer to the table. ‘Now scram.’
Grabbing Gabriel by the elbow, Luca dragged him away.
It was about twenty minutes later that Gabriel heard the first jar shatter.
He and Luca were studying at an outdoor table; hearing the bright tinkling of glass on concrete, Gabriel leaned around the tall hedge that obscured them from view, peeking over at the art installation Luca had set up.
Sure enough, there Cas was, looking like he’d wandered off the set of a modelling shoot, all embroidered bomber jacket and sleek black turtleneck, a baseball cap pulled over his perfect hair, topped off with a jagged, dangling earring.
Gabriel wanted to kiss his stupid, beautiful face. Screw him for looking so good all the time, honestly. He was annoying.
Luca pressed a finger to their lips; together, they watched on in silence as Cas tossed and caught the rock a few times, letting it fly with a breathtaking grace.
A jar exploded into a shower of glass and vibrant teal, colourful droplets spattering in violent patterns all over the concrete, already stained neon pink.
Oh, Cas was loving this. Luca flicked Gabriel a satisfied smile.
Cas tilted his head, growing preternaturally still as a gaggle of preppy juniors crossed the quad.
‘Oh no,’ Gabriel whispered, suddenly worried. He knew that look. Cas was working out angles, speed, trajectory—
‘Oh, shite,’ Luca breathed. ‘I think I miscalculated.’
Grinning, Cas tugged the baseball cap lower on his brow. ‘Batter up!’
Cas let the rock fly.
It slammed into the table leg; metal gave way with a shrieking ping as the supports warped in on themselves. The whole thing pitched sideways, jar after jar after jar sliding down to smash onto the pavement, a wave of rainbow colour splattering onto the unlucky students and drenching them from head to toe.
Cas howled with laughter as they squealed and scattered.
‘Oh god…’ Luca cringed, pressing his hands to his face. ‘Ohhh, they look like a Pride parade in a blender, oh no…’
Wincing, Luca peeked askance at Gabriel.
‘At least he’s having fun, right?’
Gabriel sighed, watching Cas gleefully aim a kick at a still-intact jar. He was having fun. Far too much fun to be truly genuine.
The manic gleam of laughter in Cas’s eyes kicked Gabriel in the chest. It was an old expression, one Gabriel was intimately familiar with; the kind Cas’s face would light with over the years whenever he tried to goad Gabriel into fighting with him.
Cas was lonely.
Gabriel’s throat tightened.
‘…I’ll talk to him.’

Benefits of Using a Learning Management System
Tumblr media
In today’s digital epoch, where information is the new currency, the role of effective education delivery systems has become paramount. Institutions, corporations, and individuals are increasingly turning to technology to streamline and enhance the learning process. A quintessential tool in this technological arsenal is the Learning Management System (LMS). This sophisticated software application has revolutionized the way education and training are delivered, managed, and evaluated. This article delves into the manifold benefits of Learning Management System, elucidating how it facilitates a more robust and efficient learning environment.
The Quintessence of a Learning Management System
A Learning Management System is an integrated software application or platform designed to facilitate the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, automation, and delivery of educational courses, training programs, or learning and development programs. Whether in a corporate setting, an academic institution, or online education, an LMS serves as a pivotal nexus for learners and educators to interact, exchange knowledge, and achieve educational objectives.
The global LMS market has witnessed unprecedented growth, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.6% from 2021 to 2028, demonstrating the escalating demand and utility of these systems in various sectors. This statistic underscores the growing recognition of the benefits of a Learning Management System in enhancing educational and training outcomes.
The Pedagogical Prowess of LMS: A Panacea for Modern Education
1. Centralization and Organization of Learning Materials
One of the most significant benefits of a Learning Management System is its ability to centralize and organize learning materials. In traditional learning environments, resources are often dispersed across various locations, whether physical or digital. An LMS consolidates all learning resources—documents, videos, assessments, interactive modules—into a single, accessible location. This centralization not only enhances the ease of access for learners but also streamlines the administrative tasks for educators.
The organized structure of an LMS allows for meticulous tracking of progress, ensuring that learners can navigate through materials in a sequential and logical manner. Furthermore, it facilitates the systematic updating of content, ensuring that learners always have access to the most current and relevant information.
2. Personalized Learning Experiences
The advent of LMS has ushered in an era of personalized learning, wherein educational experiences are tailored to the unique needs and preferences of each learner. Unlike traditional classroom settings where a one-size-fits-all approach often prevails, an LMS can adapt to individual learning paces, styles, and interests.
For instance, the use of algorithms within an LMS can analyze a learner’s progress and suggest content or modules that align with their current understanding and future learning goals. This adaptive learning approach ensures that learners remain engaged and motivated, significantly improving knowledge retention and skill acquisition.
“Studies indicate that personalized learning approaches, such as those enabled by an LMS, can lead to a 20% improvement in learning outcomes compared to traditional methods.”
3. Enhanced Communication and Collaboration
Communication and collaboration are integral components of any educational experience. A Learning Management System provides a plethora of tools that facilitate interaction between learners and instructors. Discussion forums, chat rooms, video conferencing, and collaborative projects within an LMS create a dynamic and interactive learning environment, fostering a sense of community and collective knowledge-building.
Moreover, the asynchronous nature of many LMS platforms allows learners to participate in discussions and collaborative activities at their own convenience, breaking down geographical and temporal barriers. This flexibility is particularly beneficial in today’s globalized world, where learners and educators may be spread across different time zones.
4. Efficient Assessment and Feedback Mechanisms
Assessment is a critical aspect of the learning process, and a Learning Management System offers sophisticated tools to create, administer, and evaluate assessments with unparalleled efficiency. Whether it’s quizzes, assignments, or exams, an LMS provides educators with the flexibility to design assessments that accurately measure a learner’s understanding and competencies.
Moreover, the automated grading systems within an LMS ensure timely and objective evaluation of assessments. This not only reduces the administrative burden on educators but also provides learners with immediate feedback, enabling them to identify areas of improvement and adjust their learning strategies accordingly.
“The integration of automated assessment tools in an LMS can reduce grading time by up to 60%, allowing educators to focus more on instructional activities.”
5. Scalability and Flexibility
One of the salient benefits of using a Learning Management System is its inherent scalability. Whether an institution has a small cohort of learners or a vast global audience, an LMS can easily accommodate varying numbers of users without compromising on performance or user experience.
Additionally, the flexibility of an LMS allows it to be used in diverse educational settings, from K-12 schools and universities to corporate training programs and online courses. This versatility ensures that an LMS can evolve alongside the changing needs of the organization, making it a sustainable investment in the long term.
Unlocking the Power of LMS in Corporate Training
The benefits of a Learning Management System are not confined to academic institutions alone; they extend to the corporate world, where continuous learning and development are crucial for maintaining a competitive edge. The implementation of an LMS in corporate training programs unlocks a myriad of advantages, some of which are highlighted below.
1. Cost-Effectiveness and Resource Optimization
In traditional training programs, organizations often incur significant costs related to travel, accommodation, printed materials, and venue rentals. An LMS mitigates these costs by delivering training programs online, eliminating the need for physical presence and printed materials. Moreover, the scalability of an LMS means that training can be delivered to a large number of employees simultaneously, further optimizing resources.
“The adoption of an LMS in corporate training can lead to cost savings of up to 50% compared to traditional training methods.”
2. Standardization of Training Content
Ensuring consistency in training content is a perennial challenge for organizations, especially those with a geographically dispersed workforce. A Learning Management System provides a standardized platform where training content is uniformly delivered across the organization. This standardization ensures that all employees receive the same quality of training, regardless of their location or time zone.
3. Data-Driven Insights and Reporting
An LMS is equipped with advanced analytics and reporting tools that provide invaluable insights into the effectiveness of training programs. Organizations can track employee progress, assess the completion rates of courses, and identify areas where additional training may be required. These data-driven insights enable organizations to refine their training programs and ensure that they align with both organizational goals and employee development needs.
“The ability to analyze training data through an LMS can improve employee performance by 32% by aligning learning outcomes with business objectives.”
4. Compliance and Certification Management
For many organizations, compliance training is not just a necessity but a legal obligation. A Learning Management System streamlines the management of compliance training by automating the enrollment, tracking, and reporting processes. This automation ensures that employees complete mandatory training within the required timeframes, and that certifications are maintained and renewed as necessary.
Moreover, the detailed reporting features of an LMS provide organizations with a clear audit trail, which can be crucial in demonstrating compliance to regulatory bodies.
5. Empowering Continuous Learning and Development
In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, continuous learning is vital for both individual and organizational growth. A Learning Management System facilitates a culture of continuous learning by providing employees with access to a vast array of resources and courses that can be pursued at their own pace.
This self-directed learning approach empowers employees to take control of their professional development, leading to increased job satisfaction, higher retention rates, and a more skilled workforce.
The Strategic Imperative of Adopting an LMS
As the digital transformation of education and training continues to accelerate, the adoption of Learning Management Systems has become a strategic imperative for organizations and institutions alike. The benefits of a Learning Management System—ranging from cost-effectiveness and scalability to personalized learning experiences and data-driven insights—are too significant to ignore.
Moreover, in an era where remote learning and hybrid education models are becoming the norm, an LMS serves as a critical enabler of these new learning paradigms. By unlocking the full potential of an LMS, organizations and institutions can not only enhance the learning experience but also achieve their educational and business objectives with greater efficacy.
“The global eLearning market, driven in part by the widespread adoption of Learning Management Systems, is projected to reach $375 billion by 2026, underscoring the enduring relevance and impact of these platforms.”
Unlock Learn: The Future of Education and Training
As we look towards the future, it is clear that Learning Management Systems will continue to play an instrumental role in shaping the landscape of education and training. Whether in academic institutions or corporate environments, the benefits of a Learning Management System are profound and far-reaching. By embracing these systems, organizations and learners alike can unlock new opportunities for growth, development, and success.

What are the Steps to Becoming a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Trainer?
Tumblr media
“By making ourselves indispensable, we make our teams and organizations less resilient. In complexity, our job isn’t perfection, it’s building a culture that is always learning. And that requires letting go.” - Aaron Dignan.
What is a scaled agile framework?
The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a collection of best practices, principles and processes that enables large organizations at the project, program and portfolio level to adopt agile methodology to deliver products of highest quality faster. Unlike other popular agile frameworks like Scrum and Kanban which are effective at team level scaling. SAFe facilitates more than two teams to associate on projects, objectives and results through SAFe Strategic Themes. These strategic themes help align the business strategy of an organization with SAFe portfolio which influences portfolio vision, value stream budgets, large solutions, ART and team backlogs.
Why do we need scaled agile?
Though with the implementation of agile methodology and popular frameworks like Scrum and Kanban helped generate desired results for companies, still there was a challenge that agile couldn’t handle and that is ‘scalability’.
Lack of experience and understanding with the agile frameworks, methods lead to the questions like, how to implement agile for larger and complex projects? And how hard will the process be to scale agile? And this scenario paved the way for the other effective methods like Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS), Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Disciplined Agile (DAD) and Nexus Scrum and Spotify model to scale agile in bigger enterprises.
Who is a SAFe trainer?
According to the survey of SAFe Program Consultants (SPCs), over 70% of agile coaches are engaged in training SAFe implementation. Generally, a SAFe trainer is labeled as Servant Leader who facilitates both collaboration and change in an organization.
Tumblr media
Roles of a SAFe trainer
The SAFe trainer enables the teams in their SAFe adoption and trains them with the variety of Lean techniques and tools to develop the flow of value in the agile teams.
The trainer leads Lean-agile organizations with the help of SAFe core values to increase productivity, employee satisfaction.
As an Agile trainer, his role is to understand the interaction between the agile teams and agile programs.
He makes sure that the envisioned road map for the success and plan executed through ARTs are done effectively.
Other responsibilities are fixation of schedules, adoption of SAFe principles, face to face interaction, and synchronization among agile team members are carried out properly.
Steps to become a SAFe trainer
With SAFe becoming the most preferred Agile framework in most of the large enterprises, pursuing leading SAFe training courses is a mandatory step for any agile coach to become a SAFe trainer with best knowledge of SAFe frameworks and the way of implementing it to produce results at a faster pace.
Here are some simple steps to become a SAFe trainer in a large organization:
1.      Search for a Scaled Agile Framework certification course provider.
2.      Register for the program and complete the course in the given duration.
3.      Collect your Scaled Agile Certificate.
4.      Once completed learning about the framework, apply for tests offered by other trainers.
5.      Complete the exam based on an agile framework.
6.      After you qualify the exam, you will be recognized as a certified SAFe professional with a digital badge.
7.      Apply your knowledge and skills at your job and contribute to the organization to produce desired results.
Most of the online courses can provide you with following benefits:
Classroom training or online virtual classes by well skilled SAFe Program Consultants.
Fees details included in the package.
Access to case studies and simulations.
Soft copy of the complete course material.
Free membership to the SAFe community.
Training with role play and other activities.
Title Descriptions
 1. What are the SAFe strategic themes in an organization?
The SAFe Strategic Themes are the collaborative process formulated by the Enterprise Executives and Fiduciaries working with Lean-Agile management and other portfolio stakeholders to analyze the process before arriving at conclusions. Strategic themes are used to define and track progress towards the objectives.
2.  How valuable is a SAFe trainer for an organization to produce results fast?
Implementing a scaled agile framework in a large organization becomes challenging for the agile teams as they don’t possess the adequate amount of knowledge and experience about the agile frameworks to apply at the different stages of the software development process. Hiring a SAFe Trainer would be able to guide the team members through the process with necessary tools and practices.
3. Is it important to take the SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) certification class to become a SAFe trainer?
To lead the transformation in a large enterprise, and to train the other team members to execute their responsibilities and support the change, a SAFe trainer needs to be more skilled in Scaled Agile Framework. And should also possess necessary knowledge about agile methodology so that he can work on scalability. SAFe Program Consultant certification helps a trainer to apply principles and practices in a team more effectively by coaching other team members.

If Delhi is breaking down, what should we imagine is happening in villages in Bihar, in Uttar Pradesh, in Madhya Pradesh? Where tens of millions of workers from the cities, carrying the virus with them, are fleeing home to their families, traumatised by their memory of Modi’s national lockdown in 2020. It was the strictest lockdown in the world, announced with only four hours’ notice. It left migrant workers stranded in cities with no work, no money to pay their rent, no food and no transport. Many had to walk hundreds of miles to their homes in far-flung villages. Hundreds died on the way.
This time around, although there is no national lockdown, the workers have left while transport is still available, while trains and buses are still running. They’ve left because they know that even though they make up the engine of the economy in this huge country, when a crisis comes, in the eyes of this administration, they simply don’t exist. This year’s exodus has resulted in a different kind of chaos: there are no quarantine centres for them to stay in before they enter their village homes. There’s not even the meagre pretence of trying to protect the countryside from the city virus.
These are villages where people die of easily treatable diseases like diarrhoea and tuberculosis. How are they to cope with Covid? Are Covid tests available to them? Are there hospitals? Is there oxygen? More than that, is there love? Forget love, is there even concern? There isn’t. Because there is only a heart-shaped hole filled with cold indifference where India’s public heart should be.
Early this morning, on 28 April, news came that our friend Prabhubhai has died. Before he died, he showed classic Covid symptoms. But his death will not register in the official Covid count because he died at home without a test or treatment. Prabhubhai was a stalwart of the anti-dam movement in the Narmada valley. I stayed several times at his home in Kevadia, where decades ago the first group of indigenous tribespeople were thrown off their lands to make room for the dam-builders and officers’ colony. Displaced families like Prabhubhai’s still remain on the edges of that colony, impoverished and unsettled, transgressors on land that was once theirs.
There is no hospital in Kevadia. There’s only the Statue of Unity, built in the likeness of the freedom fighter and first deputy prime minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who the dam is named after. At 182 metres high, it’s the tallest statue in the world and cost US$422m. High-speed elevators inside take tourists up to view the Narmada dam from the level of Sardar Patel’s chest. Of course, you cannot see the river valley civilisation that lies destroyed, submerged in the depths of the vast reservoir, or hear the stories of the people who waged one of the most beautiful, profound struggles the world has ever known – not just against that one dam, but against the accepted ideas of what constitutes civilisation, happiness and progress. The statue was Modi’s pet project. He inaugurated it in October 2018.
The friend who messaged about Prabhubhai had spent years as an anti-dam activist in the Narmada valley. She wrote: “My hands shiver as I write this. Covid situation in and around Kevadia Colony grim.”
The precise numbers that make up India’s Covid graph are like the wall that was built in Ahmedabad to hide the slums Donald Trump would drive past on his way to the “Namaste Trump” event that Modi hosted for him in February 2020. Grim as those numbers are, they give you a picture of the India-that-matters, but certainly not the India that is. In the India that is, people are expected to vote as Hindus, but die as disposables.
...As this epic catastrophe plays out on our Modi-aligned Indian television channels, you’ll notice how they all speak in one tutored voice. The “system” has collapsed, they say, again and again. The virus has overwhelmed India’s health care “system”.
The system has not collapsed. The “system” barely existed. The government – this one, as well as the Congress government that preceded it – deliberately dismantled what little medical infrastructure there was. This is what happens when a pandemic hits a country with an almost nonexistent public healthcare system. India spends about 1.25% of its gross domestic product on health, far lower than most countries in the world, even the poorest ones. Even that figure is thought to be inflated, because things that are important but do not strictly qualify as healthcare have been slipped into it. So the real figure is estimated to be more like 0.34%. The tragedy is that in this devastatingly poor country, as a 2016 Lancet study shows, 78% of the healthcare in urban areas and 71% in rural areas is now handled by the private sector. The resources that remain in the public sector are systematically siphoned into the private sector by a nexus of corrupt administrators and medical practitioners, corrupt referrals and insurance rackets.
Healthcare is a fundamental right. The private sector will not cater to starving, sick, dying people who don’t have money. This massive privatisation of India’s healthcare is a crime.
The system hasn’t collapsed. The government has failed. Perhaps “failed” is an inaccurate word, because what we are witnessing is not criminal negligence, but an outright crime against humanity. Virologists predict that the number of cases in India will grow exponentially to more than 500,000 a day. They predict the death of many hundreds of thousands in the coming months, perhaps more. My friends and I have agreed to call each other every day just to mark ourselves present, like roll call in our school classrooms. We speak to those we love in tears, and with trepidation, not knowing if we will ever see each other again. We write, we work, not knowing if we will live to finish what we started. Not knowing what horror and humiliation awaits us. The indignity of it all. That is what breaks us.
...But that is only one part of the story. The other part is that the man with no feelings, the man with empty eyes and a mirthless smile, can, like so many tyrants in the past, arouse passionate feelings in others. His pathology is infectious. And that is what sets him apart. In north India, which is home to his largest voting base, and which, by dint of sheer numbers, tends to decide the political fate of the country, the pain he inflicts seems to turn into a peculiar pleasure.
Fredrick Douglass said it right: “The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” How we in India pride ourselves on our capacity to endure. How beautifully we have trained ourselves to meditate, to turn inward, to exorcise our fury as well as justify our inability to be egalitarian. How meekly we embrace our humiliation.
As for Modi, is resigning from your crimes a feasible proposition? Perhaps he could just take a break from them – a break from all his hard work. There’s that $564m Boeing 777, Air India One, customised for VVIP travel – for him, actually – that’s been sitting idle on the runway for a while now. He and his men could just leave. The rest of us will do all we can to clean up their mess.
No, India cannot be isolated. We need help.

i have to wonder if there's an implication that can be drawn the other way around wrt playfulness and stress - not that un-playful individuals experience stress more acutely, but that people who experience stress more acutely become less and less playful. i have intense, disproportionate shame/fear reactions due to Childhood Trauma(tm) and it's inhibiting as fuck - my work with my singing teacher to relax and (though i've never framed it this way) play(!) w/out embarrassment has been (1/3)
one of the most healing things for me... so i think there's this nexus of inhibition & confidence/security & perspective/scale & playfulness & resilience. to be playful you have to be a bit silly and vulnerable and willing to take a risk on doing something "wrong" i.e. not take yourself too seriously, but if you feel chronically unsafe you'll take yourself & everything else too seriously and want to do it "right" so you minimize the perceived risk of harm. going back to my singing teacher (2/3)
the most important thing she did for me was create an explicitly safe, non-judgmental environment where it's not only ok but even desirable to "fuck up" and "look/sound stupid" and to reinforce that message multiple times. so anyway that quote just made me think that "don't take things/yourself too seriously" sits at this interesting intersection between increasing playfulness & coping strategies for emotional damage. sorry to ramble about it in your ask box lol! (3/3)
*
yes I think this is so so true!! all of this, lol, but especially the part about how acute stress can make it increasingly difficult to be playful. i have written a lot about working through internalized shame here in the past, and especially about the ways that shame causes you to both physically and emotionally shut down parts of yourself. (i actually gave a talk about this subject recently! it was like, a layman’s intro to the neuroscience of shame, with a specific focus on how shame responses affect people’s ability to learn & to connect socially with others in learning spaces.)
i do just want to clarify that the excerpt i posted was from a study that was very narrowly focused on answering the question: “is there a link between playfulness levels and positive/adaptive coping mechanisms in responding to stress?” the study wasn’t designed to answer larger questions about what kinds of life experiences might produce higher levels of playfulness vs. make it difficult to be playful (such as past trauma, not having one’s basic needs for security met, etc.). in the conclusion the authors note that their findings (i.e., that playful people seem to be more able to readily access and use positive coping mechanisms) means that we should be doing more research on how to cultivate playfulness and how to help people unlearn maladaptive coping mechanisms like self-blame. so the point of the study was not to blame individuals or place the responsibility on individual people (“if you could just lighten up, you wouldn’t be so stressed / unhappy / bad at coping!”). it was more like, an attempt to establish that playfulness (as a way of engaging with the world) seems to be associated with all of these positive ways of coping and managing stress, and so we might want to research playfulness more deeply and/or focus on cultivating it in college students.
so i think you are absolutely right that when we talk about playfulness it’s important not to think of it as something that something people just “have” or don’t have (detached from any consideration of people’s backgrounds, lived experiences, etc.). and we also want to avoid pathologizing its absence (“if you don’t have a playful attitude then there’s something wrong/flawed/messed up about you that needs to be fixed”). my research is focused on understanding how we can better create learning environments like the one your singing teacher has created for you -- i.e., spaces where people feel more secure and less vulnerable to scathing or hypercritical judgment; where failures and mistakes are encouraged & normalized as a natural, healthy part of the learning experience; where instructors are modeling self-compassion and deliberately not using shame-based methods; and just in general, where students are getting the kind of gentle, compassionate, consistent messaging you describe receiving from your teacher. basically I’m interested in creating classrooms that provide the stability and consistency people need in order to learn adaptive coping mechanisms that will serve them well outside of those learning spaces.
i think these questions are so important because most college instructors are VERY aware that our students come into our classrooms carrying many different kinds of trauma—whether it’s the more extreme forms that we tend to think of when we think about trauma (childhood abuse, sexual assault, trauma experienced by combat veterans or refugees from warzones), or the forms of pervasive lowgrade trauma associated with financial precarity, racialized stress, etc., or even just the “lighter” or harder-to-classify forms of trauma that rachel naomi remen calls “the cultural shadow” (i.e., the toxic dominant culture that many of us grow up immersed in). and anyone who has taught at the college level (or taught any age level) knows that as a teacher you often have to at least temporarily play aspects of counselor / social worker / person adept at navigating university bureaucracy to help keep students in crisis from slipping through the cracks. (that is obviously NOT ideal, as those roles should be filled by trained professionals! but we have all been in those situations, where you are the first line of support for a student in crisis, or sometimes the last line of support because they have slipped through the giant holes in our country’s social safety nets.)
i think there’s been a shift in recent years towards “trauma-informed pedagogy,” but the slightly watered-down version of this approach many instructors receive tends to be very focused on mitigating harm in the classroom (ie, avoiding certain things or framing material in certain ways so as to avoid re-traumatizing students). this work is obviously HUGELY important (and my own research project is v much informed by it!). but i sometimes feel like these approaches are very damage-centered, ie very focused on understanding how students are “damaged” by their experiences and how we can “prevent further damage” in the classroom space. again, wanting to adopt teaching practices that avoid retraumatizing students is a good thing!!! but i think what i am hoping my work can do is suggest that we can and should strive for more than just limiting damage. to put this another way: i’m looking for ways to go beyond asking “how can we avoid re-traumatizing students in our classrooms?” to thinking more broadly about how we (as teachers, mentors, etc) can design learning environments and learning experiences that help students grow into healthier, happier, more emotionally resilient versions of themselves—and hopefully help build a foundation of social-emotional skills that they will take with them into their adult lives.
play is not the sole "answer” or solution! but i think that for me, it’s been one useful way to think about things like trauma-informed teaching, restorative practices, and social-emotional mentoring strategies, in ways that center a more positive, joyful understanding of what happy and emotionally well-adjusted adulthood can look/feel like. does that make sense?? i think about cultivating playfulness as just one angle onto answering these questions, or as one approach or set of strategies that people could have in their toolkits as they think about how we design learning environments. it won’t work for all students or all teachers or all learning environments, and it won’t solve all of the problems in higher ed (or in a culture where traumatic experiences are so prevalent and yet are so often left unacknowledged and untreated). but i think for me at least it’s been one generative way to reimagine some of the common structures and norms that structure higher ed learning environments.
anyway sorry to use your ask as a springboard into a long “thinking aloud” post!! but i really enjoyed reading your thoughts and i feel like it’s prompted me to articulate some thoughts that have just been sort of murkily floating around in my mind for the last couple weeks. i am also so glad for you that you have a space in your own life (and a trusted teacher figure) where you feel secure & can practice and explore being vulnerable, making mistakes, being silly/playful, etc. it sounds like she is a really wonderful teacher, and it’s so cool too that you are able to describe the ways in which that learning space has felt healing or healthy for you.

Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center, Utah
Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center, Utah Architecture, American Building Images
Westpointe Workforce Center in Salt Lake City
May 12, 2021
Salt Lake Community College
Design: SRG Partnership
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
The Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center (WWTEC) at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is a technically sophisticated facility for hands-on learning that supports the community’s training needs in a flexible, high-quality space. Located in an underserved area of Salt Lake Valley, the adaptable WWTEC aligns with SLCC’s mission as the area’s primary post-secondary provider of technical workforce education, addressing a growing shortage in skills-based workforce.
The facility brings together technical education in advanced manufacturing trades active in the Salt Lake Valley, including Composites, Plastics, Machining, Welding, Electronics, Diesel Technology and CDL Truck Driving. Collaborative lab, classroom and shop spaces based on real-world working environments help ensure students are well-equipped to enter Utah’s growing STEM-based industries.
The WWTEC sits on a highly visible site immediately west of I-215, creating an opportunity for the building to express the dynamic activities held within, as well as the values of the College. The building’s east façade became an opportunity for SLCC branding, while the facility’s form ended up being 121,000-square-feet and more than 600 feet long.
The magnitude of the WWTEC was addressed in design by breaking up the mass through form and materials, accommodating the human scale with a more approachable, pedestrian-friendly environment for students and faculty. Varied solid/void relationships were also employed to break up the mass, with a strong inside/outside connection between public spaces.
The exterior massing demonstrates the WWTEC’s function and interior program, while themes of visual transparency within put training on display to motivate and inspire students. High-bay lab spaces are organized along one side of a linear spine, with two levels of classrooms and support spaces on the spine’s street side.
Envisioned as a healthy, vibrant learning environment for students and faculty to encourage learning, the interiors feature higher ceilings, abundant indoor-outdoor connections, natural daylight, and passive learning spaces in which users can interact and socialize. The interior program separates the industrial scale of hands-on shop space from the human scale of general academic classrooms and open study areas.
The facility offers the highest possible levels of life safety, security, daylighting, clean air, and the efficient use of energy and water in support of all activities held within. In pursuit of net-zero electricity usage, a 3,520-panel, roof-mounted solar array provides much of the Center’s electrical needs. Furthermore, 28 skylights and continuous clerestories bring in ample natural light to boost cognition and productivity.
The WWTEC gives students pursuing technical careers a unique one-stop education center in preparation for the workforce, serving the College and its community for years to come.
