Usually the issue with this fix is homophobia tbh.

The rival/best friend is almost always the same gender as the MC, and anime hasn’t reached the point where a gay couple isn’t the entirety of the plot, unfortunately. The closest I can think of is No. 6 with Nezumi and Shion, but even then their relationship is the focal point of the show. So, really, the true solution is for the industry to figure out how to write dynamic female characters and heterosexual couples or get significantly more comfortable with same-sex pairings.

Moriarty the Patriot’s manga has also gotten pretty close, but they ended the anime in such a way that they can’t really follow the actual story of the manga. Plus, William and Sherlock aren’t actually together (somehow).

Anime/Manga Writers: Why don’t the fans like the canon straight couple instead of the non-canon gay ships?

MC looking at their rival/best friend/partner: They’re like the sun, brilliantly blinding and all-consumingly powerful. There’s a deadly beauty and grace to every action they take. They’re the other half of me that I never thought could exist, the one person who pushes me to be my best self, and life without them would not be worth living. There’s nothing in this world that they could not accomplish and I am but a fool chasing after them in hopes of reaching their level. Even then, having them in front of me/by my side has pushed me to heights I never thought imaginable.

Reminder of what No.6 is mainly about, guys.

I love Nezumi and Shion more than anything. Trust me.

But their relationship was always secondary to the novels being a political statement.

This is an actual interview with Atsuko Asano, about her inspiration for city of No.6. She quite literally said one of her inspirations for it was the political environment in the USA, following 9/11.

For her to choose to continue this series right now, after so many years, is probably not a coincidence.

Their struggles are eerily similar to what many real people face in our world all the time.

I have a feeling there will be some pretty important themes in this new series.

I hope those who read it can appreciate every element of it - not only our beloved characters, but the reason they have a story to begin with.
