A clang in the other room wakes Emma up. Usually, she doesnβt think much of it, sheβs more than used to being woken up by loud noises because of her sheer amount of siblings of all ages, but this time, she glances at the clock next to her bed to find that itβs four in the morning.
Now, this is going on her third year sharing an apartment with Norman and Ray. Itβs easy, really. They may not have similar majors, but theyβve lived together their whole lives anyway, so itβs purely familiar. But now that theyβre adults and fundamentally neither of the boys have changed one bit, she knows exactly why sheβs been woken up at this hour.
Groaning inwardly, she rolls her eyes and runs a hand through her hair before throwing her legs over the edge of her bed to stand up, bringing one of her blankets along without an ounce of remorse.
βShit!β She hears Norman whisper, upon hearing her feet dragging against the carpet down the hall.
Thereβs a snort. βI told you that would wake her up.β
When she comes into view Norman smiles sheepishly at her and picks up the pot he dropped off the floor. Thereβs a pack of ramen on the counter next to the stove. Ray lifts his mug to his lips and flips a page in his textbook, nonchalant.
Emma glares at them the best she can, her eyes squinting from the brightness of the kitchen light. βGo to bed!β she yells. βYouβre gonna get sick again if you donβt sleep. Both of you!β
βBut Iβve got an exam in the morning,β Ray says.
βWe both know youβll be fine. Are you drinking coffee? At 4 am?β Emma asks, exasperated.
βIβm working on my lesson plan,β Norman tries. No excuse will work with Emma right now, he surely knows.
βI donβt care,β Emma whines. βGo. To. Bed!β
βIβm sorry I woke you, Emma,β Norman says, setting the pot on the stove and crossing the room to stand in front of her. He places a hand on top of her head, which is mostly covered by her blanket, and smiles. She just purses her lips.
βIβll forgive you if you go to bed,β she says. βI mean it. Youβll get sick again, Norman. You canβt teach your class if youβre sick and you know that.β
βI do know that,β he says. βBut I would have to be up in less than 2 hours anyway, so thereβs no point in me sleeping now.β
βUgh, whatever,β Emma sighs. She shoots Ray a pointed look, not even considering taking a jab at him considering heβs currently drinking coffee. βIβm going back to bed. At least eat something healthy, Norman.β
