FILMING is underway in north Belfast for a new Channel 4 sitcom created by two sons of Irish Hollywood icon Brendan Gleeson.
Frank of Ireland, a six-part comedy series from the producers of 2019 C4 comedy hit This Way Up starring Kildare comedian Aisling Bea, is being shot on location in Belfast with crews filming scenes yesterday on the Crumlin Road.
Written and starring brothers Brian and Domhnall Gleeson, sons of Harry Potter and Gangs of New York star Brendan Gleeson, Frank of Ireland tells the story of a hopeless fantasist and failed musician Frank, who still lives with his mother in his 30s, and his sidekick 'Doofus'.
Set in Dublin and described as containing a "physical and ridiculous brand of humour with an original twist", the show is the latest Irish-shot sitcom aiming to secure success on Channel 4, following Derry Girls, which has went on to garner a global audience through being aired on Netflix.
The character of Frank is played by Brian Gleeson, previously nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award for his role in RTÉ crime drama Love/Hate, while Domhnall, who like his father appeared in the Harry Potter franchise, playing Bill Weasley, plays Doofus.
Filming for the sitcom began in both Belfast and Dublin earlier this year, before the coronavirus pandemic forced cameras to stop rolling.
Producer Sharon Horgan, who alongside Clelia Mountford is bringing the show to life with their production company Merman, said: "Working with the Gleeson Brothers has been like living in a very funny, existential dreamscape.
"I laughed so much making the pilot that it became annoying. So Clelia and I are very glad and relieved they still chose to make this series with us."
Frank of Ireland will begin airing at a date yet to be announced by Channel 4, and the series will reach North American audiences through Amazon Prime.

British Army helicopter takes final journey to Crumlin Road Gaol (Irish News)
One of the last Wessex helicopters in Northern Ireland has made its final journey.
It is to go on permanent display at the Crumlin Road Gaol visitor attraction in Belfast.
The aircraft were once a common sight over the skies during the Troubles as the “workhorse” of the British armed forces transporting troops and VIP visitors.
The helicopter had been based at RAF Aldergrove in Co Antrim from 1969 as part of the Support Helicopter Detachment, the “Ulster Flight”.
There had been 30 Wessex helicopters based in the north, which were active until 2002 when they were retired from service.
XR 529 Echo was retained as a Gate Guardian for the Station HQ at Aldergrove.
Today, it made what is expected to be its final journey to Crumlin Road Gaol museum to go on permanent display.
Crumlin Road Gaol closed as a prison in 1996.
It re-opened as a tourist attraction in 2012 and welcomed the Queen as a visitor in 2014.
Phelim Devlin, director at Crumlin Road Gaol, described the arrival of the helicopter as “an important part in the next phase of development at the jail”.
“We are hoping for the tourism season starting in Easter to add a new range of tours,” he said.
“It is going to focus more on some of the recent Troubles. The Wessex is going to be an important part of that, it’s going to help tell of the role of the RAF and the British Army during that period.”
The helicopter will be on display beside the last remaining army sangar on the site.
“We are absolutely delighted to get it, and very thankful for the RAF for giving it to us. We think it will be a brilliant addition,” he added.
The helicopter will go on display at Crumlin Road Gaol from Easter following restoration work.

hey kellie! i'm studying in ireland for 4 months and i'm going to have lots of time to travel - where are some cool places i should visit?
1. ME
Okay it obviously depends where you're studying, but honestly? Dublin is so overrated I hate Dublin.
Galway is really nice, as is Donegal. Donegal is like the holiday spot for Catholics, especially Bundorin. You gotta hit the Giants Causeway up north, and you could have a snoop around Belfast when you're there. In Belfast the Crumlin Road Gaol is interesting, and the Ulster Museum is free and it's right beside Botanic Gardens.
If you like game of thrones there's loads of got tours as well!

Those left on Wales' most polluted street as terraces demolished
Those left on Wales’ most polluted street as terraces demolished
Diane Long hasn’t opened her front windows for decades. As she looks over the soot-covered houses awaiting demolition across the street she doesn’t see that changing any time soon. She has lived in Hafodyrynys Road near Crumlin in the north of Caerphilly county for 47 years and says now the problem of incessant congestion and air pollution is as bad as it has ever been. ESPN's Thompson on McGregor's Journey From Crumlin to Superstardom UFC News
Just before Christmas, the drug dealers hanging on a north Dublin corner saw Conor McGregor's white BMW turn down their dead-end road. They couldn't believe it. Sheriff Street was among the worst streets in the city, blocked off at one end, the area controlled by one of the two local gangs. The Hutch family ran this part of the north side, while the Kinahans operated mainly in the neighborhoods south of the river dividing the town. Some of the Kinahan bosses and foot soldiers lived in Crumlin, where McGregor grew up. The two gangs were in a bloody feud that had Dublin on edge and th ... The British army is called in to deal with Scotland’s most widespread strike since 1820. Six tanks support 12,000 troops and the strikers give up their cause for a 40 hour work week after the Battle of George Square.  Ironically, Glasgow citizens gave more per capita to fund the army’s tanks when “Julian the Tank” (No. 113) made a tour of Scotland in January 1918 as a Scottish War Savings Committee initiative.  The tanks are not used against the public; their presence supporting the soldiers is enough.

Robbie Lawlor: 'Single gunman' murdered Dublin man in Ardoyne
Tumblr media
A single gunman murdered a 36-year-old Dublin man in north Belfast on Saturday, police have said.
Robbie Lawlor was shot multiple times outside a house on Etna Drive in Ardoyne at about 11:50 BST.
Mr Lawlor was a suspect in the murder of a 17-year-old in County Louth in January. It is understood he was a senior figure in a feuding criminal gang.
Three men and a teenager have been arrested over the killing.
The men are aged 27, 30 and 33, while the teenager is 17 years old.
Three were detained on Saturday - the fourth was arrested on Sunday.
The police have described the killing as "brutal".
On Sunday evening, PSNI Det Supt Jason Murphy said the murder weapon had not yet been recovered, although two properties, one in west Belfast and one in Crumlin, were searched.
Mr Murphy said he did not believe Mr Lawlor was in Ardoyne on Saturday "by accident".
"I believe he had some reason to be there and key lines of enquiry for me, at this stage, are to establish why he was there and what his connection to the address is," he said.
Mr Lawlor was well known to gardaí (Irish police) for his involvement in serious and organised crime, according to RTÉ (the Irish broadcaster).
RTÉ said he had more than 100 previous convictions and had been warned by gardaí that his life was in danger before he travelled to Belfast.
He was also a suspect for at least three other gangland murders.
Det Supt Murphy said he was keen to hear from anyone who was in Etna Drive between 11:00 and 12.30 BST on Saturday, and who may have witnessed the shooting or the gunman escaping.
He also appealed for help in tracing the movements of a VW Sirocco car, registration YLZ 7052.
"I believe it was in Estoril Park on Friday and was burnt out in Kingston Court immediately after the murder yesterday," he said.
Neighbours had previously described how they tried to save Mr Lawlor.
One man said he "heard four big bangs and ran outside to see what was happening".
He said he saw him "stumbling out of the garden" and that he ran over to help him after he collapsed.
"I tried doing CPR but I couldn't save him," he said.
Another witness said she ran to help but that Mr Lawlor was already dead so she put a sheet over him to "give him some dignity".

Seventh Death on Irish Docks Sparks Call for Action
The ITF has joined Irish dock workers union SIPTU in an urgent call for better protection for all workers in Ireland’s ports, through both regulations and enforcement, after a 50-year-old truck driver was killed in North Docks at Dublin Port on August 14.
The death of Nicholas Collier marks the seventh death of a worker in an Irish port in the past two years. Published reports indicate a refrigeration unit was being loaded onto the back of the driver’s truck when he was struck and killed by another vehicle.
In July, 59-year-old Kevin McGeough was killed in a workplace accident in Warrenpoint Port. In November 2018, seafarer Dennis Gomez Regana was killed in a lashing accident on Southbank Quay in Dublin city.
Paddy Crumlin, chair of the ITF Dockers’ Section, said: "We call on stevedoring companies to reassess their working practices and health and safety protections for workers. These companies must undertake proper risk assessments of all cargo-handling procedures in consultation with their workforce.
“It's not good enough, it's not acceptable, that workers are being killed because of shoddy safety practices and short cuts that save time and put money in the pockets of those that should actually be punished.
“This is why industrial manslaughter laws are so important because they not only provide an avenue to true justice for the families of those people killed at work, but because the implementation and enforcement of industrial manslaughter laws will force the cultural change that will hopefully lead to fewer deaths at work,” said Crumlin
Jerry Brennan, Ports, Docks and Harbour Organizer for the SIPTU told media that tragedies are occurring with frightening regularity. “It is beyond my comprehension how the construction industry has had the benefit of a national safe-pass certificate requirement for almost 30 years and yet there is no such corresponding national requirement within our ports and docks.”
Heather Humphreys, Ireland’s Minister for Business, has agreed to meet  SIPTU and ITF representatives to discuss safety solutions.
International reports indicate port deaths occur at a rate of more than one per week of the year, says the ITF.
