so far the tea on Eurovision is still PIPING. Here's what I've scraped from Twitter so far:
** Graham Norton called out the fake audience sounds during Israel's performance, saying something like "I don't know what you're hearing at home but we're getting very mixed signals here"
** Several broadcasters including I think Spain and Belgium displayed messages in support of Palestine before the show or during Israel's performance as they did last year
** The Spainish broadcasters have been issued a warning by the EBU after the commentators cited the casualty figures during the broadcast
** I've seen footage of people being aggressively restrained and threatened by security while shouting "free palestine". One guy got his hair pulled and slapped by security telling him to "shut up"
** The face of the EBU was booed and jeered at when he was set to announce the results. Still a little hypocritical from people who paid in hundreds of Euro to be there but it's still a sign that even the most complicit are sick of their shit.
** Israel came second overall and #1 in public voting which they are again calling the "silent majority", despite multiple Israeli supporters publicly admitting they personally voted hundreds of times with phone numbers in multiple countries, completely skewing the vote. They also ran ad campaigns for Israel specifically during the official Eurovision livestreams. Make no mistake that this show is 1000% being used as propaganda for Israel and the numbers for voting are NOT accurate.

PayPal phishing scam going around
So, you'll get an email from a ridiculous email address, looking something like this:

I hope all of you would immediately recognize this as a scam - weird, unofficial email address, person you've never heard of, etc., plus a meeting you don't know about and a purchase you don't know about.
This is all badly written and should instantly tip you off that this is a scam -- but I want to point out ways they work to make you believe it even if your first instinct is "This is wrong."
Your attention is immediately drawn to the the invoice image in the body of the email, which looks like this:

If you aren't looking too closely, it looks like a PayPal invoice, which goes a long way to convincing people that this is legitimate. But there are a pile of clues that this is a scam:
Right under your name and the "Transaction ID" number is the Customer Support phone number. That's not where a customer service phone number usually appears on an invoice. Generally you'll find that number in the footer or somewhere at the end of the invoice. If anything, it should be *your* phone number or email there, as part of the customer ID info.
They put the phone number up there so that you're immediately thinking "call customer support to get my money back." They want "Someone has my credit card information" or "someone made a big mistake" to be front of mind, so that your first thought of "scam" is overridden by "I need to get this money refunded."
Then the words "final reminder." This is another thing that should tip you off that this is a scam, since you will not have received previous reminders. But again, if you're thinking about several hundred dollars being charged to you that you probably can't afford, then you're not thinking "Wait, I haven't seen anything else about this" because you're thinking "I can't afford to lose this money." Or you may do what so many of us do, and think "How did I miss the other reminders?" -- immediately blaming either yourself or tech, giving the scammers an out.
And the word "final" means you better act now or else - more false urgency.
Below the "bill" it says that if this charge is wrong, you have 24 hours to rectify it. Again, omg omg omg call them RIGHT NOW. And hey look at that, there's that useful phone number again! Right after the word "refunds" -- just what they want you to be thinking about.
And then the phone number AGAIN in a big blue box. (Which, if they were better at their scamming job, would be a button you could tap to dial the phone number.)
That's a lot of appearances of the customer service number.
Now take a look at the small print.
"Thank you for using PayPal to purchase Norton 360 Security for 2 years."
Have you ever seen a PayPal invoice? That's just not what they say.
Immediately followed by another repetition of the fact that you need help and the support team is standing by to help you.
Then there's some stuff about "our secure platforms" and "we accept all major platforms."
That was written by someone who doesn't really know what words they need, possibly someone for whom English is not their first language. "Our secure platforms" is super-vague, but it's the "We Accept All Major Platforms" that's a giveaway - did they mean "We Accept All Major Credit Cards?" If they meant "platforms" to indicate alternate methods of payment (Venmo, CashApp, Zelle), they would have listed them, or at least extended the sentence to clarify.
This is very clearly a scam, but for fun, I called the phone number. This is another dead giveaway -- the person on the other end of that phone call.
When they picked up, they said "Hello--thank you for calling customer service."
That's not how any company's customer service would answer the phone - they would begin with "Thank you for calling $COMPANYNAME customer service."
The thing is, scam call centers are fielding calls for dozens, if not hundreds, of scams. The computer in front of the scam worker identifies the *phone number* you called to tell them *which scam* you have fallen for, so they answer generically while the computer brings up the appropriate script.
I said, "Who am I speaking to?"
He said "This is PayPal customer service."
Then I asked him this: "Can you tell me why I've called PayPal's customer service phone number?"
This is different enough from anything that anyone who has actually fallen for the scam would say that they don't have a script for responding to it. So they become annoyed and rude right off the bat, because they have ZERO customer service training and don't actually know how to talk to people on the phone if it doesn't fit their script. He raised his voice and said "You called us! You called us! How do I know why you are calling us!"
If you miss every other clue on your journey through an email that urges you to call customer service for anything (but usually money), think about how customer service representatives are trained to deal with customers. Think about all of the legitimate interactions you've had with customer service. They thank you for calling a specific company. They give you their first name, they ask how they can help you and/or ask for your name and why you are calling today. They identify themselves and ask you to identify yourself. They try to be helpful. Scammers are trained to follow scripts, and not much else. If you step even just a little bit outside of the lines, they are lost.
One last thing - it's an unfortunate reality that googling "$COMPANYNAME's customer service phone number" is no longer a reliable way to get customer service phone numbers, because so many scams are talked about on the internet that Google is returning scam phone numbers as legitimate ones. (This happened to me with Amazon - I got a scam email telling me I'd made a purchase on Amazon and to call the given number for customer service. I called, I knew it was a scam, and then I googled the phone number. It came up as "Amazon customer service." I was able to email an Amazon customer service manager a screenshot of my Google search of the scam number and Google saying it was an Amazon customer service number. So Amazon then had to deal with getting Google to fix that issue.) The point being, we have to rely on ourselves and our critical thinking skills for these scams, because the internet is now garbage.

so the situation i had was taken care of but im still on red alert b/c this is my first time ever going thru this and it can very well happen again. i just wanted to share a few tips for anyone else that have had their identity stolen and others who want to prevent it.
1st step is probably the most important
CHECK. YOUR. EMAIL.
I can’t stress to you enough how important this is. This is the only reason I found out that I was experiencing identity theft in the first place. I check my email compulsively and b/c of that I spotted the fraud auto insurance quote from Liberty Mutual and the fraud bank account opened in my name from Chase. You don’t have to check it every few hours like I do lol but make it a healthy habit to know what’s in your inbox.
2nd step
Contact the institution(s) immediately
As soon as you spot something wrong, contact whatever institution it’s linked to. I’m gonna tell you right now, the best way to reach most of these places is through twitter. Most of them have a separate twitter away from their main dedicated to dealing with consumer issues. And if it’s on twitter, they will likely respond much quicker because they don’t want anything negative spreading on social media about their business. These twitter accounts are usually under the handle @Ask(name of business) or @(name of business)Support. You would think it’s easier by phone but the amount of unhelpful ppl I had to deal with is insane. These accounts will collect some basic information thru DM and then send you a number to whatever department handles fraud. The correct one. Many of these businesses have multiple departments that seem like they can handle your issue but they can’t. And then you’re needlessly handing out very sensitive info like your SSN. Contacting thru twitter was a lifesaver for me and it saves you very valuable time. It’s a race against whomever has your identity and it’s one that you have to win and throw as many obstacles as you can their way to slow them down.
3rd step which can actually be done during step 2
Create accounts with all 3 credit bureaus
It’s a very quick process and all three bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax) allow you to check your credit to make sure nothing sketchy is on there. They also allow you to freeze your credit files and put out fraud alerts up to a year or 5 years. You only have to put in a fraud alert with one of the bureaus and that bureau will notify the other two and save you some time. This will put all businesses on alert when it comes to your credit and makes it easier to remove any damage done by someone who has your info. And it makes it harder for them to apply for credit in your name.
4th step
Sign up for Norton Lifelock or Aura
I was able to get Lifelock for free when the credit bureaus got hacked but services like these do cost money. But the resources they hold are very valuable. Thru Lifelock you should be able to sign up for something called Chexsystems which allows you place a bank freeze and makes it hell for an intruder opening up a bank account in your name. And Lifelock also has a notification system that sends you a phone call whenever there’s an alert and provides information up to the exact time someone used your info to make a transaction. Which is great information for police departments and the FTC. There’s a lot more you can do with Lifelock as well but it’s gonna depend on your individual situation. Also, I don’t personally use Aura but I do know they have specialized identity theft departments that you can contact and help you whenever something terrible like this occurs.
5th step
Contact the FTC and make an identity theft report
This is actually not as intimidating as I thought it would be. Very straightforward. Just make sure you put in as much info as possible. They will ask if you put in fraud alerts with the credit bureau, they will ask what day it happened, etc. Basically all the steps you took before this, leads to this report with the FTC. You’re also able to update the report if there are any new developments with your situation at any time. The FTC will then help you with a recovery plan and send some extra resources your way for dealing with identity theft. Now honestly, idk whether the FTC contacts you later on or what else they do with the report b/c I’m still waiting to see but this is a necessary step.
Optional step
Contact the SSA
I’m only saying this is optional because it depends on how devious someone is being with your information. Like if they’re using it to apply for jobs and such, contact the Social Security Administration and apply to get your number changed. If they’re using it to apply for loans and credit, then the FTC and all the other steps should do just fine. I basically just signed up for the website out of caution. In a situation like this, you really can’t be too careful.
Prevention
Create strong passwords wherever you sign up and always make sure to have 2FA (which is two factor authentication) on. Some of my info getting out is from old websites with weak passwords and ones that didn’t have 2FA.
Another reason my info leaked outside of major institutions getting hacked, and I gotta keep it real here, are my own personal money troubles. When you’re struggling and don’t have any help, you make bad decisions out of desperation. I tried signing up for loans anywhere I could and it led me to fake loan websites that are only there to steal your information and sell it or use it themselves. My rule of thumb now is to stay away from loans period b/c they definitely don’t help in the long run. But if you must do it, then do it in person with a business that has an actual storefront. Never apply online. Trust me it’s safer than putting in your info somewhere on the internet.
Inflation is killing us all and I’ve never seen so many donation posts in my life. That said, I don’t care how annoying it is to other ppl but e-begging is actually a good option if you have nowhere to turn. Because it’s ppl that actually wanna help you and you can skip all the risks of giving out your info. Don’t be afraid to help someone if you have anything extra because it can save them from reaching the point of desperation I did that caused my information to get stolen.

someone stole my information and identity over the weekend and applied for a bank account and looked up an auto insurance quote in my name. little do they know how many resources i actually have at my disposal for this type of situation. i’ve frozen my credit for all three bureaus, placed a bank freeze (a lil late lol), put out a fraud alert, put in an identity theft report with the ftc, contacted the social security administration, put my lifelock on high alert, and i made sure to get that fraud bank account and auto insurance quote flagged. this mahfucka really came to the wrong neighborhood thinking imma back down
