for – (en dash) on mac as cuprohastes says, option + - for — (em dash) on mac, option + shift + -
according to the hyphenation guide in a graphic design reference handbook I have lying around, because my brain is a sieve and ought to retain what to use when:
Hypen (-): • Use for words that are broken over two lines (pro-ject), • fractions written in words (two-thirds), • multiple modifiers (part-time employee), • or in a compound adjective, verb, or adverb.
En dash (–): • Indicating ranges in a numeracle sequence (January 23–25, pages 53–66) • Other designations of time (May–June) • Or when combining open compounds (Maryland–Virginia border)
Em dash (—): • Use as punctuation in place of a semicolon or colon • or to indicate a pause of thought • or to precede a quote attribution
just saw a post that accused someone of using generative ai to write an essay because 'no one uses — instead of commas or semicolons' and i've never been more offended in my life
