Mammoth Bones Found During Wine Cellar Renovation in Austria
A set of mammoth bones have been discovered in a wine cellar in Austria during renovation works.
The remains, which could represent at least three individual animals, are thought to be between 30,000 and 40,000 years old.
A local winegrower, Andreas Pernerstorfer, made the finds in his wine cellar, which is located in Gobelsburg, in the district of Krems, west of Vienna.
After spotting the bones, Pernerstorfer, reported the finds to the Austrian Federal Monuments Office, which then referred the winegrower to the Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).

A statement issued by the OeAW described the discovery as the most significant of its kind in the country for more than 100 years.
Archaeologists have uncovered several layers of mammoth bones in the wine cellar, as well as stone artifacts and charcoal. These latter finds helped to shed light on the age of the mammoth bones.
"Such a dense bone layer of mammoths is rare. It's the first time we've been able to investigate something like this in Austria using modern methods," Hannah Parow-Souchon with the OeAW, who is leading the excavation at the wine cellar site, said in a press release.
Around 150 years ago, a similar discovery was made in Gobelsburg. Then, researchers uncovered a thick layer of bones, alongside flint artifacts, decorative fossils and charcoal, in an adjacent cellar in Gobelsburg.

The latest discovery from Gobelsburg could help shed light on how prehistoric humans hunted mammoths.
"We know that humans hunted mammoths, but we still know very little about how they did it," Parow-Souchon said.

Archaeologists suggest that the location where the mammoth bones were found in Pernerstorfer's cellar could be the place where the animals died. It is possible that people chased the creatures into this spot and set some kind of trap for them.
Researchers are currently examining the mammoth remains in an attempt to uncover new insights. The remains will subsequently be transferred to the Natural History Museum Vienna, where the bones will be restored.

Fragment of a 1,750-year-old New Testament translation discovered
#Fragment of a 1,750-year-old #NewTestament translation discovered #ÖAW @oeaw @grigory_kessel
The fragment of the Syriac translation of the New Testament under UV light Credit: Vatican Library About 1,300 years ago a scribe in Palestine took a book of the Gospels inscribed with a Syriac text and erased it. Parchment was scarce in the desert in the Middle Ages, so manuscripts were often erased and reused. A medievalist from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) has now been able to make…

cater's pretending to scroll through magicam, but in truth, he's trying to find a good angle in getting a candid photo of leona. (and praying the lion doesn't notice.)
@splitcards
It seems to be working quite well for Cater. Leona's gaze is elsewhere at the moment, idly looking out the window as if that would somehow make study hall to end sooner. He looks quite relaxed with tail flicking every so often and ears twitching here and there when they pick up random sounds.
His lax demeanor lasts for a moment longer before emerald eyes shift to stare directly into the camera, Leona arching a brow at the redhead. It was hard to ignore when somebody was paying attention to him, camera or not.

Social Insect People of Tumblr, this is your time to shine!
I would greatly appreciate your help with a new project about neurodiversity & entomology that is very near and dear to my heart! If you can spare a few minutes, please take part in the survey linked below and feel free to share widely!
https://forms.gle/TnhyEwQFVVQ3EFkC6
Time to complete the survey: 15-20 minutes
Based at the KLI Klosterneuburg, the University of Vienna, and the University of Konstanz, we are an interdisciplinary team from the fields of myrmecology, cognitive neuroscience, and philosophy of psychiatry. In this study funded by the OEAW L’Oréal For Women in Science Grant, we are interested in the overlap of these research areas within the field of social insect science.
Thank you very much for your participation!

Two pages of lost ancient text the "Orphic Rhapsodies" found in Sinai palimpsest
Two pages of lost ancient text the “Orphic Rhapsodies” found in Sinai palimpsest
I learned today via the Austrian Academy of Sciences (@oeaw) of a very exciting discovery indeed at the monastery of Mount Sinai in Egypt.  There is a rather good article about it at the OEAW site here, with photographs. A previously lost Greek classical text in hexameters has been found in a palimpsest, as the under-text on two sheets.   The material is about the childhood of the god Dionysus. …

Medieval Text Reveals A NSFW Poem About A Talking Vulva
When you think of raunchy displays of sexuality, you probably don’t immediately think of Medieval parchments found in a dusty Austrian monastery. However, a centuries-old text reveals that the imagination of the Middle Ages was surprisingly unprudish when it came to sexuality.
Scholars at the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medieval Research (OeAW) recently analyzed a newly discovered fragment of the text Rosendorn, translated as The Rose Thorn, that’s two centuries older than any other known copy.
Although it looks like a fairly bland historical document at first glance, the Rosendorn actually details a surprisingly vivid piece of erotic satire. The poem is about a young female virgin arguing with her vulva about who is more appreciated by men. According to The History Blog, the quarrel leads to the woman and vulva departing from each other, hoping to prove who truly is the most desirable.
However, the break up spirals into disaster. The vulva is used and abused by every man it encounters, while the woman offers herself to a gang of men who trample her. In the end, the woman and her vulva agree they are better together, at which point the male narrator – who has been watching all of this drama unfold from afar – reunites the duo through the act of sex.
All’s well that ends well, I guess?
Christine Glassner, a researcher from the OeAW who worked on the project, explained in a statement that the poem is an “incredibly clever” narrative that explores whether a person can ever be separated from their sexuality.
The newly discovered strip was found in the archives of Melk Abbey in Austria. The parchment consists of a thin strip just 22 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters wide (8.7 by 0.6 inches), so only a few letters per line are recognizable. Nevertheless, through painstaking analysis, the team managed to piece together the story and discover it was written 200 years earlier than previously thought, towards the end of the 13th century. It’s believed this kind of erotic poetry was recited and possibly performed, but rarely ever written down.
The sexual themes of the poem could also provide an invaluable insight into how sexuality was viewed in the Middle Ages. It’s easy to assume people from pre-modern ages had a nun-like attitude towards sexuality or were perhaps too busy warding off plagues and fearing God to indulge in such decadent pleasures. However, sex remains a constant theme of the human experience, regardless of time, place, or culture – and the Middle Ages are no exception.
