“But what if that angers the spirit?” Toby’s voice was high, anxious, as it often was when his beloved Jet was in another room. He had such an anxious energy. She didn’t understand how he didn’t tire himself out more. “We don’t want to damage their belongings.”

“What if we open it inside a protective circle?” Hazel suggested. Bright as always. Typical changeling. “Then the spirit won’t be able to get in.”

She sighed. “Wait until Junie gets back and ask her. I’m sure she’ll have something in one of her books.”

She could be on a flight right now. Layover in Hong Kong, maybe, or Singapore, a day or two before she finished her trip. Over the centuries, she’d grown to love the sun. An unhealthy amount, for a vampire, probably. Her protective charms wore out a little quicker than they should. But to her, it was worth it. She was still absorbing a lifetime’s worth of warmth.

She could be on the beach in a week, damn it. Why was she still here?

Finally, the door opened and she sat up. Junie and Jet were standing at the door, each with an old, frayed looking book in their hands. But before she could ask, Jet declared, “Alice Fay’s journals.”

“We could only check out one each,” Junie said, holding out the other. “There’s still one more.”

May eyed the books. Yes, she could imagine the woman from the painting in Rebecca’s office writing in those, perhaps obsessively. She looked the type.

“We need to do a circle so we can open this thing safely,” Hazel said, looking u at Junie from her place on the floor. “Do you know how to do that?”

“I have the theory in one of my textbooks, but it’s an advanced technique. I can try it.” Her voice was heavy with doubt. “But it’ll take some practice, and I have this journal…”

“I’ll read the journal.” May held out her hand. “Guess we’re going to have to delegate. No one else here can do a circle but you.”

Junie glanced down at the book, and May did feel a little sorry, taking her chance at research from her. But if time was of the essence here, she knew what she had to do. Junie handed it over. “Okay.”

“I’ll go read the third journal,” Hazel suggested, getting to her feet. “I’m not allowed check things out of the library anymore, but I can read it in there and Ms Pelham will leave me alone.”

“What’s with the ban?”

“Too many late returns. Look, it’s not my fault her whole life is devoted to those goddamn books.” She sighed, hands on her hips. “Whatever, doesn’t matter. I’ll read it downstairs and let you know if I find anything.”

“What about me?” Toby asked, the wooden box sill clutch din his hands. “What should I do?”

“You can help me with the circle,” Junie suggested. “It’d be helpful to have a volunteer to test it on.”

He looked so relieved at having something to do, it was difficult not to smile. It has hard not to endear to Toby, if she was honest. She’d never been the biggest fan of werewolves. She didn’t like how they smelled when they transformed, and she’d never liked their boisterous nature. They were so noisy. But he was sweet. And he was just a pup, anyway. He’d grow into himself soon enough.

And it did make business a breeze (as if it needed to be any easier, he often maligned). He drove round the block, to a more secluded area, and dialled who he needed. He craned his neck for final confirmation of his solitude.

“Speaking from the comfort zone. Trouble averted.”

The other voice oozed a certain unseriousness. Like a man unable to tell you the colour of the sky or whether the sun was indeed hot.

“No time for hellos, man? What happened to manners?”

Two kids sped past, and the call was paused for a moment, agitating the other man – who would remain nameless - that was very important.

“Yeah, hello?”

He obliged through gritted teeth.

“Hello. Trouble averted.”

It was an inconvenience to bend the knee like that, but some of these guys could be pushy. He just counted himself lucky he was met with petty, rather than insolent.

“Good.” The other guy reverted to formalities. “Have a wonderful day.”

Thomas put the phone down with a little more fury than usual, taking care to avoid damage. It was then he noticed how poorly the area was. Cracked streets and holes in the road that he was able to graciously ignore on his way over in the first place. But then, he reflected on how this was a pitifully common sight, and that the city was rotting, in part because of people like him and his phone companion. As he rolled his car out of the back-alley, taking care to swerve out of the path of little potholes, which surely became the downfall of other drivers, the heat began to fade into a moderate chill. The sharp, distinctive shadows became duller, the only downfall of this change in the weather.

The streets he traversed before, in more naïve days, kept their dirt-ridden atmosphere and he counted his blessings the times had shifted in his favour. Yet. Things had gotten so boring recently – his whole process had degenerated into pageantry and, if he was being honest with himself, his skills hadn't been tested in years. That was the trouble with your reputation preceding you – so did everything else. You got cut out of the process and winning became a given. A minor complaint, sure, but one that still rankled. The biggest issues he had now were with the attitudes of those he dealt with, and putting day one tykes in their place after they had gotten too many ideas in their head.

Was that it? Close to two decades of work, and retirement bounced in his mind. But he didn't want that – no, that couldn't be the note he ended on. He couldn't wind down, not now. Career highlights flashed in his mind and it drove him to want to make history all over again. No more of this middle manager, “let's-get-this-over-with” bullshit that had plagued him now. If it had been the glory days, the little guy would've been painted and his bosses pinned to the wall.

He slowed down coming to the light, but the thoughts and desires only grew more intense. Soon, much like that little guy back in the cramped rathole, he shook. But not out of fear. He shook with a perverted longing for violence that had so eluded him.

A quiet, pained expression left him. “What's your story, man?”

He kept repeating it, barely above a whisper, as he revved further. The light stuck.

“What's your story, man?”

What would his story, be? Fixer turned gummed up cog, part of the system? A tool of others, like that asshole on the phone?

The light continued to stick. The muted shine taunted him.

“What's your story, man?”

He blasted the accelerator, narrowly missing an elderly man making his way across. The old man was but a blur now. The knowledge he would not be caught brought him joy. The spirit of youth had possessed him and he gripped the wheel with force. Now was no time for a novice. But a novice could come in handy.

“Am I your man?” he asked without hesitation.

Donovan was a good, god-fearing boy. An imperfect replica of his father, who was the sort of person that hadn't had a single negative thought in his life. He didn't have a crime to his name – on the record, at least. He was only slightly spottier under the hood, however, with a carjacking and a mugging. Yet, he had been pointed out as a promising investment by an older figure, who was taken by his bluntness and agility (and, allegedly, the long hair and tough body). Initially, there was distrust – Donovan was Irish, obviously, and various ethnic feuds harmed his case on that front – but with time, he was given clemency and allowed to prove himself as a criminal.

But, it was a mistake to presume he didn't have his own plans. It was a case of naiveté for his higher ups, as “Donny” wasn't quite deserving of the safe lamb reputation he gained. Ambition marked him like it had marked so many others, and he noted failures that had occurred in the past. Events didn't favour him, with upheaval in the business threatening him. but he made do. He keenly kept details of his ambition to himself, and presented meekness to anyone whose job it was to pry it out.

For what it's worth, Thomas noticed him too. Not in as much detail, but the way the boy evaded capture in that mugging took him aback. It was the kind of sleek skill he had sorely missed deploying in youth. Though he tried not living through other recruits, it was difficult when they reminded him so much of a better version of himself. The feeling was a little mutual, anyway. Donny understood the history and what had been done in his name, and indeed envied him greatly.

He took Donovan by his shoulders – sculpted and broad, poorly concealed by a woolen jumper – and nodded in the affirmative. He had such a wicked plan for them both. And, if it was successful, doors opened for them both. Donny would be slotted firmly beneath him, a potential man waiting in the wings, and Thomas would be feared on a real basis as he had been before, in the good times.

“Here's the deal, kid. This has to be between us, okay?”

Donny gritted his teeth a little, and returned a nod.

Thomas betrayed a little desperation by explaining. “It's no evil business – I'm not trying anything, but it's better off as a two person project if you feel me. I think we could do some amazing work together.”

The younger man smiled with a little playfulness. He affirmed his support one more time, feigning wholehearted enthusiasm. The heat wasn't on him now, but it would be beneficial to have an ally for when it hit him, and he knew it would. Someone that could protect and insulate him. Thomas, with his respect and reputation, still carried the air of a loner. That was something to exploit.

The rain had ceased by the time the heist began. It was a sudden shift, but one that was welcomed. Some had noticed the black van, glistening with that dripping water, and ignored it. Best to stay out of trouble.

Donny scouted the area in plain clothes, noting how unremarkable it was. Fake grass and plain trees dotting the landscape. The kind of suburban mediocrity his father so loved, and he resented. Scouting gave him some time to think through what he was getting into. Was it worth it? The risks – well, given what he now wanted to do with his life, risk was something he had to be cavalier about. Thomas was a staid, trusted figure. And, in time, a budding partner. A mentor. Hopefully, there would still be a level of trust at that point. He knew now he was getting a little ahead of himself.

He changed outfits, taking care to fold his old, wet clothes like his mother taught him, and patted his face dry. Pulling a small makeup mirror he had stolen from his bag, he took the time to fix his hair, inwardly remarking on its shape and wondering if it was becoming of his type.

His isolation was interrupted.

Thomas came crashing into the back of the van, leaving Donny a little shaken. The former's strength was impeccable, and he believed newfound excitement had made him a little naïve about it. Nothing to worry about – he was in the hands of a capable operator.

They came face to face, eyes holding level, trapping each other in place. A few light breaths from both men gave way to a recap of their plan. It was such a simple operation – the kind that used to be a fun dalliance and a plentiful initiation.

Security was lax at the bank, and both men had deduced it would be no harder than your usual convenience store – not that Thomas would even countenance such a minor target. It was small, though, and a target that somehow had been spared by the merciless crime wave. They stood to gain little in the way of resources but that was besides the point. It was about the status and what it represented. One big simple victory to provide a new era for them.

Thomas did what he could to dry himself and they sat together in silence, either one wondering if the other was in prayer. Donny handed him a rifle and a strap, leaving the pistol for himself. He hadn't much experience with weapons, but makeshift training made him more than a novice. His long in the tooth partner was surprisingly not much of a gunsmith – his heyday had seen him tussle with the likes of bats rather than bullets – but the amount of time he had 'in the service' made him able to pick up guns with ease. The equipment itself had, as Thomas so subtly implied, been pilfered from a local armory. Donny looked down on that a little, but didn't make that known, and simply went with the flow.

They flashed looks of concealed excitement as the final trappings of the night air dissipated – it was go time.

The two walked together, almost hand-in-hand, through the glass doors. They walked so smoothly to the teller, a small blonde lady in ill-fitting spectacles that fell down the bridge of her nose every other second.

They gave their word. She did as commanded – this wasn't about to get bloody. No, not yet.

Her eyes, behind thin planes of cloudy glass, betrayed her innocence. She looked to both men with equal distance, feigning reverence and a delegation of authority, when she planned to be quite brazen.

She then let the dogs slip, and the alarm blared with such magnitude.

Donny's heart dropped, pulses of danger that hadn't yet been trained out of him. Thomas, for his part, reacted with anger and a subtle frustration as they realised the need to move quick.

Alert at the wrong time. Panic simmering beneath him. He kept it pressed down to the best of his ability, measuring his breaths.

In a moment of hubris, they drew their weapons and made a mad dash to the vault. The adrenaline carried them – they ran on air, beads of sweat flying from their person. In this short little sequence, Thomas was exhilarated. The mistakes had only begun, but it would be just like when he was young and thumping.

The gunfire then began – and not from them. Armoured thugs – for they were in Thomas' view – in pursuit.

They darted from place to place, grunting at having been thrusted into boyish helplessness.

Just about through the whitewaters. Clear by a second or so.

Then Donny got pulped. Real quick. Like a flash.

A lucky shooter – son of a fucking bitch - managed to barrel right into the side of his face, destroying his cheek. The handsome, athletic young gun of the business was taken out without a second thought, eyes meeting the sky as he slumped to live out his dying seconds on a worn floor. Thomas had no time to react; the event barely even clicked until he managed to throw himself into a hidden spot. His breathing became tighter and tighter at the impending realisation. But he moved, still. He had to.

Thomas' long-standing disquiet had been followed by a rejuvinated sense of vigour. Both disappeared, likely forever.

Images percolated his mind and no amount of tough guy pretension would get rid of that. Why was he so horrified? It would be a joke to say Donny was his first dead body, but in truth it was more than that. A clean record, decades in length, of taking out those who “deserved it” and never once hurting the business. That changed – many a man would be looking at the unnecessary death of a rising star who was winning hearts and minds in a vanity run. And the promise had been extinguished – out of self-interest. Plus – that viscera, spread out, it had, for a time, become meaningless. The red may as well have been muted grey – but the personal connection, he figured, changed that quick.

Did they have protection, or were they warned? He could not begin to consider that he had been wrong in his appraisal of that target. There should've been a guarantee of ease. He was one of the most feared men on this side of town, and he got blindsided that quick.

A priest flashed Thomas with crimson robes and off-white garments as he gave Mass. He made a glance, not with suspicion or even curiosity, but with acknowledgement. It had been many years since he had last visited church or even tackled the outskirts of religion, and with the sermon only commencing, his memory quickly reminded him why. Nerves overtook him again and he began to measure his breaths. Looks to the door alerted long time parishioners to his guilt, and one or two made signs of the cross.

No, he couldn't do it. Newfound faith wouldn't save him – he was hopeless for showing up. His one time colleagues were deep into holy books but Thomas paid it no heed. He slid out of the pews and walked briskly to the door, feet trailing each other. The priest, hands above his head in prayer and worship, bringing about euphoric hosannas, sighed and bid him farewell silently. A lost soul who only just came to terms with his isolation.

All the world's eyes were on him and he could feel this tightening around his inner self. He thought back through his career - it had never gone wrong like that when he was at his peak, or was that just failing memory? After all, '73 saw Dennis Ciro get blown up and '74 was the President's Day massacre. Then the justifications set in. Those were supposed to be errant mistakes that he had no involvement in. One-offs. He was better than that whole mess. Was.

Alleys were cleared in seconds. The paranoia really was getting to him, but the exhaustion was providing competition. A dumpster, half-destroyed and scorched, provided filthy cover from prying eyes. He figured, in his distressed sate, that homeless guys fucked on it before his arrival. The sky continued to shine an unbearable clean blue. The situation demanded some kind of misery – rain or sleet, but no, it was beaming. So spotless was the earth above and a man reduced to hugging bags of shit could not bear it. Self-pity gave way to outward hatred, which in a twisted way, Thomas considered healthier. He banged heavily on the dumpster's remnants, dirtying his hands further, before gathering himself and making way elsewhere.

Before he could cover himself with further grime, Thomas stood and set a course out of increasingly miserable back alleys. Everlasting paranoia marked his moves, spotting various assassins and newfound enemies in a crowd of innocents. Errant looks and sideways walks alerted him to false threats. They all became one big blob of danger. He had to count his breaths again, and made his way into the crowd, trying to spy an exit.

In the shade rested a little man against what could just about be described as a car. That worked for him.

Thomas took on the cloak of confidence and hovered, waiting for the mark to detach himself. He strained through the next agonising 15 minutes as best he could, enroached by an ever-present terseness.

At last, the mark left and he took to the car, avoiding side glances. His old skills at hotwiring were barely required here – the piece of shit hadn't been tuned up for years, at a rough guess. It took him a little work, mainly manouvering around a machine that should've been collecting dust, but it growled and attempted a roar nonetheless. The blaring tones of that rocker music Donny loved poked in between the overwhelming mush of the static, and Thomas switched the radio off in frustration. He wanted to ride in the silence. He hadn't earned a victory lap.

The streets dissolved into open road, and the sky cast out the clouds to shine a bright blue.

Every second, his chances of surrendering to the cops grew and he hated himself for that. Listless blurs passed him by as he raced to somewhere, anywhere he could see as safe. At this point, the dam would have burst legally – so those options were thin. A safehouse existed out west, but no doubt he'd be caught on the journey – in all his exploits, he had never been truly on the run before. The forests had seen some of his colleagues try and hide out pursuits, but they gave way to dehydration. This wasn't a fantasy novel.

Fuck it.

He bailed in an instant, with the car screeching to a halt. The drowsiness that overtook him was of such a level that the car was left wide open. He looked to the bathroom of a rest stop, that had appeared in his limited field of view.

The door could've fallen off its hinges from the strength that Thomas exerted on it. He closed it with a little more grace. Following a very brief gathering period, he rushed to the sink, washing his face of the last trappings of dirt he accrued at that dumpster.

He noticed, however, something about the area, both inside and outside.

Empty. This place was beyond saving – for the damned. Almost a morality play, with littered drug paraphernalia and dried blood.

The mirror, plagued by years of cracks and smudges, provided him with a face. A face that had quickly became lower than dirt. He turned and looked once more at the remnants of his 'gear'.

This was it. This was what he'd leave behind – his other accomplishments melting into air due to his hubris.

The door swung open behind him, the creak now becoming an insufferable ringing.

He turned and had only a single thought.
