Here’s 42 hip hop projects from the third quarter of 2018 (july/august/september) that I think are worth checking out.  Clicking on the title of an album will take you to the bandcamp page or a stream for the album so you can listen to them. this summer has been great for hip hop and there’s a few releases i really love that aren’t getting as much attention as (i think) they should or that have gotten lost in the shuffle, so hopefully if you take the time you check the stuff you’re not familiar with you’ll find something you enjoy. peace.  - Top albums from the first quarter of 2018 - Top albums from the second quarter of 2018 - Link to chart w/ album titles included - Spotify playlist with songs from these albums and more Avantdale Bowling Club - Avantdale Bowling Club Armand Hammer - Paraffin Ka & Animoss - Orpheus vs. the Sirens Milo & Elucid - Nostrum Grocers Lupe Fiasco - DROGAS Wave Milo - budding ornithologists are weary of tired analogies Roc Marciano - Behold a Dark Horse Noname - Room 25 Wowflower - feverdream Onry Ozzborn - Nervous Hvnd Saba - Care For Me Sims, Air Credits & ICETEP - Artería Verité Jeremiah Jae - Daffi Psychedelic Ensemble. - LIVE AT THE CLINIC Googie - Floating Polygons Medhane - Ba Suba, Ak Jamm Knife Knights - 1 Time Mirage Denzel Curry - TABOO | TA1300 Moses Rockwell - Subterranean Sweatpants Swarvy - Anti-Anxiety Pink Siifu - ensley Ohbliv - Retrospective Kev Brown - Homework al.divino x ESTEE NACK - Akiraonacid Noveliss - Cerebral Apex Rejoicer - Energy Dreams tajima hal - Isolated Planet L'Orange & Solemn Brigham - Marlowe Zilla Rocca - Hard Boiled EP Foul Mouth - The Snake Pit Knowledge the Pirate - Flintlock Psymun - TAPE PRGMAT - concrete jungle flava cunabear - Yawning Towards Heaven!!!! Best Rap 2018
This year has been probably the most packed year of all time in terms of the sheer volume of decent rap releases. Due to the huge quantity of releases it’s easy to miss out on a lot of great music and get lost in the mix. With that in mind, I wanted to create a long list that can be bookmarked and returned to for those who slept.
I could have easily created a top 300 and still felt bad about leaving a few good albums out. That said, I've managed to cut it down to a slightly more definitive (but hardly concise) top 150 so this doesn't read like too much of a phone book.
As in previous years, ‘Rap’ is on the banner, but the list is made up of hip-hop, UK road rap, grime, and anything that can adequately be categorised as a rap sub-genre in my mind.
Finally, as usual, don’t get too hung up on the order. The top albums are at the top and the still-quality-but-not-quite-elite albums are towards the lower end, but there’s no use getting too hung up about what appears as, say, my 57th and 61st favourite albums. This is designed and published primarily for myself to look back on in years to come and reflect on the year, but also for anyone who reads it to see it as recommended listening that should keep you very busy.
I would write a blurb for each and every album to explain why I love them, but no-one would pay me and my time is valuable, so instead I’ve linked each album to their Spotify stream…Enjoy, and feel free to let me know if I've missed anything!
Here’s my top 150 rap albums of 2018. Happy new year!

October 2018 -*PlayLi$t of the Month*
Tumblr media
Ooooo it is getting awfully spooky out there, folks...
Temperatures are (finally) plummeting, so for this month I have the perfect score for you. Tis the season for grimy rap music, and with new releases from the likes of Roc Marciano, Styles P,  Sheck Wes, and Westside Gunn, the chilly sound of autumn is officially in full swing here on the east coast. That being said, this month’s list also includes a diverse array of talent from Grand Rapids, New Orleans, St. Louis, Richmond, and beyond (plus an extra deep “honorable mentions” section, to further champion all of the great new tracks out there). So please enjoy some of my favorite songs from the month of October...
1. “Dolph Lundgren” - DJ Muggs & Roc Marciano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43R-lDAhhjg
(Another month, another dope Roc Marciano project. What stands out on KAOS is the chemistry between Roc and DJ Muggs. With this special MC + producer joint album, the two underground icons joined forces to create a street soundtrack that is at once both a throwback and a breath of fresh air. Roc’s persona on records is unparalleled, he packs a 70′s hustler’s soul in the body of a modern gangster. Place those bars over Muggs’ dark soul samples, and you have yourself one helluva album.)
2. “40 Acres” - Chester Watson
https://soundcloud.com/chesterwatson/40-acres
(On first listen, Chester Watson sounds like a clone of Earl Sweatshirt. The Miami-by-way-of-St. Louis MC certainly possesses a dark, monotone delivery that is eerily reminiscent of the vibes channeled by the former Odd Future standout, but rest assured, Chester is an artist more than capable of standing on his own two. If “40 Acres” doesn’t make you want to check out his new Project O album, then that’s your loss - this track is fantastic.)
3. “Vetements Socks” - Sheck Wes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvntmsHRNa0
(Truth be told, I had very little expectations for this MUDBOY project. I didn’t even appreciate the breakout hit “Mo Bamba”, but I really do appreciate Sheck Wes’ full length debut. I always say whatever your style is, do it well, and at least provide some form of perspective. For all of Sheck’s youthful inexperience, poetic shortcomings, and scattered focus, he has released a project that captures his energy, his taste in music, and that he is a raw, talented artist with a lot on his mind. “Vetements Socks” brings to mind one of the early hits of another young Harlemite, that being “Peso” by A$AP Rocky. While far from the classic New York-centric hip-hip sound, MUDBOY is an album that successfully paints pictures of where Sheck is in his life right now, and it feels like the NYC sidewalks that I stomp around on today.)
4. “Southside Sector” -  Big Kahuna OG feat. Fly Anakin
https://schemeteamallstars.bandcamp.com/track/southside-sector-prod-ohbliv-feat-fly-anakin
(Every Mutant Academy release I have heard is pretty dope. However, certain projects really do an excellent job showcasing one specific MCs potential as a uniquely talented rapper/writer, as opposed to just bars over beats. Big Kahuna OG’s new Weapon Ox tape is possibly the best album of his catalogue thus far, and I can’t recommend it enough.)
5. “CL Smooth” - Willie The Kid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWtr3bUFNE8
(Low key, Willie The Kid has been dropping dope music since he popped up on the scene again in 2017, after a hiatus. His Things Of That Nature tape is another one of his filler-free releases, and I find this “CL Smooth” shout-out especially, well, smooth.)
6. “'94 Ghost Shit” - The Alchemist feat. Conway & Westside Gunn
https://soundcloud.com/alan-the-chemist/the-alchemist-feat-conway-westside-gunn-94-ghost-shit
(Since hearing the IG teasers many months ago, Griselda fans have ben clamoring for the release of “94 Ghost Shit”. They/we finally got that wish granted when Uncle Al unleashed the Conway and Westside Gunn helmed banger on his site. Just a loosie, or a teaser for the trios long awaited Hall & Nash 2 project??? For now, we at least have this tough as nails joint to keep in rotation for the foreseeable future...or at least until WSG drops Hitler Wears Hermes 6 on Halloween!.)
7. “Boss” - Little Simz
https://soundcloud.com/littlesimz/b-o-s-s-1
(Is this the solo debut of a UK artist on the Pundit PlayLi$t!? I believe so! Little Simz has been on my radar for a while now, but with “Boss” she finally has what feels like a smash to me. The beat is a head nodder and Simz uses it to showcase why she is a fierce MC that deserves respect from her fans and peers alike.)
8. “Life In Crooklyn” - Planit Hank & DJ Evil Dee feat. Jeru The Damaja, Buckshot & AZ - Life in Crooklyn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=korr8p6lDhk
(A simple, but effective piece of NYC nostalgia that is knocked out the park by an elite line-up of legendary New York legends. Jeru, Buckshot and AZ are no doubt some of Brooklyn’s finest to ever pick up the m-i-c, and they each lend their magic to this one.)
9. “We Got Everything” - Styles P & Dave East
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTfMYCFhzi8
(Not a lot of hype went into the release of Beloved, Styles P and Dave East’s collaboration album, but nevertheless the project is solid from top to bottom. “We Got Everything” benefits from an ear-worm of a hook, and thumping production that suits both MCs.)
10. “Uproar” - Lil Wayne feat. Swizz Beatz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WYAX6onqbM
(No, The Carter V did not live up to its’ unfairly lofty expectations...but it’s still a good album, and an even better display of how well-rounded Lil Wayne can be as a MC. “Uproar” is far from the headiest track on C5, but it’s great example of classic Weezy swagger, on top of being a fun reboot of G. Dep’s “Special Delivery”...and any time I have the chance to s/o G. Dep on my monthly playlist, I’m going to jump on it!) 🙏
*Bonus - Honorable Mention [extended edition]*
“Take It All” - Fatima feat. Roc Marciano
https://fatima.bandcamp.com/track/take-it-all-feat-roc-marciano
“Fuck 12” - Quavo feat. Offset
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4IjBNBCnZo

Nine 2018 Richmond, VA Projects That You Should Check Out
Tumblr media
We are halfway through the year and there has been plentiful content being produced from the Gritty City. There has been a constant production of great content from some well-known artists as well as some that are on the rise in the city of Richmond. I made this list of projects based on projects that are released on January 1st, 2018 all the way to June 21st, 2018. Here is a collection of nine Richmond projects that you should definitely listen to.
1.) Michael Millions- Hard to Be King
The year started with the release of a jazzy, soulful project from Michael Millions. His project ended up on XXL and his music video for Sirens, which is on the album, was featured on Revolt TV. Hard to Be King is produced by a variety of people from his brother NameBrand, to fellow Association of Great Minds member Nickelus F, JL Hodges, Bandolero, and many more. The nineteen-track project focuses on Michael’s journey to happiness. In Sirens, Michael talks about the city he grew up in and some of the challenges that he faced growing up in Richmond. The tracks transition smoothly as the instrumentals gradually change in range, making it sound like it’s a long, beautiful story. Some tracks to check out on the project: Moor Hustle (feat. Melodic), Blacksugar (feat. Fly Anakin and Nickelus F), and Happy. You can follow Michael Millions on Instagram and Twitter (@michaelmillions)
Tumblr media
2.) AARNXBRWN- Jailbird On Walton
AARNXBRWN created a buzz in the last year with performing at shows like FaceMelt Friday and Flora here in Richmond. The Equals7 collective he’s in even holds shows that happen weekly on Thursday nights. His most recent project that dropped June 2nd, Jailbird On Walton, gives any new listener a solid introduction to who he is as an individual. Jailbird On Walton is a nineteen-track project that has a balance of party songs and darker, more introspective tracks. This project shows his perseverance in his trials and tribulations. Some tracks to check out on the project: Taquito, Frankenstein (feat. OG Illa), and Wake Up. You can follow AARNXBRWN on Instagram and Twitter (@AARNXBRWN)
Tumblr media
3.) Radio B- Jesus Never Wore A Suit
This project had almost a year and a half of anticipation in the making thanks to its precursor project, Sunday’s Best back in 2017. The level of cathexis Radio was showing into manifesting Jesus Never Wore A Suit as a study for understudies to borrow from is displayed in caring for the ones close to you. Here’s an excerpt from one of the songs on JNWAS, I Got U to show what I mean: “We all see something different. We all see different pictures, but you a masterpiece. I wanna buy you wineries and cabins. Let you lavish in all your favorite things. Go to paradise and play on the swings. Share our fears and share “highdeas”. So what we talking’ bout?
When you call my name…I wanna make it where you call our name…No fault no shame. No shift no blame. I’ll share your pain. I’ll share my soul. You make me whole.”. Some tracks to check out: Cursing In Church, I Got U, and Freedom To Live. You can follow Radio B on Instagram and Twitter (@RadioBlitz)
Tumblr media
4.) Milo Case- Pillow Talking Weather
An up and coming artist from Richmond and recent UVA Alum, Milo Case, has been doing music ever since his days as a child. Pillow Talking Weather is a fifteen track mixtape that covers topics from the usual “Netflix and Chill”, college adventures, and black love to conscious societal issues such as police brutality and underfunded education from where he lived at in his younger days. Milo Case displays his versatility in sound through his rapping and singing to his overall beat selection. He was at episode three of the RVA Lyricist Lounge and finished as the runner-up. His presence in the RVA Lyricist Lounge and rising popularity in the city lead him to work on a track with Michael Millions that’s coming out later in the year. Some tracks that you should check out: Kickback, Vivadellis, and Hack (Bonus Track). You can follow Milo Case on Instagram (@milo.case) and Twitter (@MiloCaseMusic).
Tumblr media
5.) Nickelus F- Stuck
The legendary rapper hailing from Southside of Richmond dropped Stuck to celebrate his graduation from VCU. Stuck is a fourteen-track project that explores his struggles in dark, introspective tracks that fits this lyricist’s style. Recently on a WRIR radio interview w/ artist Black Liq, Nickelus F said that the second track, Sleazie Wonder, a beat that he made for the deceased Richmond artist, Sleazie Wonder. On that track, he shouts out people who he respects greatly. He also debuted a new name, Horace Hardbody The Statue, which is the thirteenth track on Stuck. It’s a reflective project that’s strictly produced by Petey (which is also Nickelus F by the way). Some tracks to check out: Mids, Trill Burr, and Horace Hardbody The Statue. You can follow Nickelus F on Instagram and Twitter (@nickelusf).
Tumblr media
6.) Fly Anakin & Ohbliv- Backyard Boogie
Two members of the Mutant Academy collective released a collaborative project back on April, 20th. The sixteen-track project was strictly produced by Ohbliv and has Fly Anakin on every track. Backyard Boogie is a bar filled project that covers a variety of topics over a diverse and elegant beat selection by Ohbliv. The project has several features from Nickelus F, fellow Mutant Academy members Henny L.O. and Koncept Jack$on and more. Some tracks to check out: Thug Bachata, Several Blunts Later (feat. Koncept Jack$son), and The Prototype (We Got All Night). You can follow Fly Anakin and Ohbliv on Instagram and Twitter (@flyanakin) & (@ohbliv).
Tumblr media
7.) Tuamie & Henny L.O.- Emergency Raps: Volume 2
Mutant Academy makes the list once again with another tag team project. Emergency Raps: Volume 2 is strictly produced by Tuamie and features Henny L.O. on twelve of the thirteen tracks. It’s another bar filled project over an extravagant beat selection from Tuamie. Emergency Raps features M.A. members Fly Anakin, Koncept Jack$on, Big Kahuna OG, and Richmond artist Monday Night. Emergency Raps: Volume 3 is already in the works and is on the way soon. The date for that project has yet to be revealed. Some tracks to check out: Exhibit M (feat. Henny L.O. and Monday Night), Love 3x, and Light Years (feat. Henny L.O. and Fly Anakin). You can follow Tuamie on Instagram (@tuamie_) and on Twitter (@Loop_Samples). You can also follow Henny L.O. on Instagram and Twitter (@hennyldot).
Tumblr media
8.) Peter $un- Valencia
The Richmond native Peter $un collaborated with producer Lasik Beats to create the Valencia EP. The EP pays homage to his new home in Los Angeles. Valencia is influenced by Playboi Carti as $un would listen to Carti frequently during the cultivation of Valencia. It has a unique modern west coast influence as the instrumentals are more upbeat and playful that anyone can vibe to. Some of the tracks to check out: SUM MOE, VALENCIA, and EVRY THNG NVV. You can follow Peter $un on Instagram and Twitter (@holapedroxx).
Tumblr media
9.) ĀR RÄ- The Sun Tape
ĀR RÄ is an artist from Southside of Richmond that has been making his own wave. He has done so from having his own radio station to being on DTLR radio to having giveaways of Adidas shoes, and more with his sun themed music. The Sun Tape is an eleven track project that describes his past that he’s adamant and honest about. The way that ĀR RÄ plays with many sun references in how he presents not just his trap music, but as a brand, definitely shows that he has a bright future ahead of him. Some tracks to check out: Sun Beam, Sun God, and Sun Tan. You can follow him on Instagram and Twitter (@arraoso)

For well over a decade, Exploded Drawing @xplodeddrawing has been focused on cultivating the electronic music and beat producer community in Austin. In that time, we’ve hosted over 400 unique performances of original electronic music in Austin, Houston, Chicago, LA, New York, Atlanta, New Orleans and more. In 2020 in response to the ongoing pandemic, the organization started a Youtube Channel to be able to continue hosting artists from around the world. The support from our community and viewers woldwide has been fantastic. Our current plan is to pivot back to live events in 2022 but we wanted to cap off this era of our organization by hosting our 11 year anniversary on the Youtube channel with one of the most impressive line ups we’ve ever had. The major benefit to hosting the show online is that we can do more with our budget as we don’t have to buy plane tickets or hotel rooms for artists, so that enabled us to put a line up of 10 artists that might each be a headliner at one of our live events. Join us for one more big online session before we return to the live world #beatmusic #bassmusic #electronicmusic #texasmusic #mpc #sp404 @computerjay @b11ce @devonwho @darealdibiase @vhvl @jontidanimals @_dieyoungs @ark.eq @ohbliv @black_milk @linafornia @butcher_bear @soundfounder @glrygldglttr @oriongarcia_ @drip_cuts @vjdk @insectrecords go to YouTube.com/explodeddrawing to subscribe!
