All Grown Up
A/N: This really isn’t that great, but I wanna get back into the habit of writing. So here’s a fun flash-forward of my faves! Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Light humming on the other side of the master bathroom door added to the low noise from the Bluetooth speaker in the bedroom as husband and wife savored the beginnings of a warm Saturday morning. CoCo sat cross-legged on her side of the bed, her silver hair pulled back into a low ponytail and her reading glasses on the end of her nose to assist her in reading from her tablet. Now that the kids were older and more independent, she and Chadwick had more time to enjoy the expected laziness of a Spring afternoon and spend precious moments with each other.
At least they thought.
Heavy footsteps racing toward their door went unnoticed until the source of the noise came barreling into the room.
“Ma, I need your help!”
CoCo commanded the speaker to stop playing her curated mix of morning music to give her undivided attention to the tall, caramel complected young man that had begun to crawl into the spot beside her.
“What’s wrong, AJ? It’s too early to have problems.”
“I’m sorry, but I really need your help this time.”
Removing her reading glasses, Tasha turned to Noah and smiled, “Alright, son. Lay it on me.”
“Alright, so boom! Prom is coming up in two weeks and I thought me and Nyah were wearing royal blue but she switched it last minute to green and I gotta get a new suit.”
“Baby, you don’t need a whole new suit. We can just change your blazer color. What shade of green did she choose?”
“There’s different types of green,” he questioned with the priceless etchings of shock making his eyes bulge. “I can’t keep up with these women.”
Tasha laughed at her son’s exasperation as he shook his head and searched the pocket of his sweatpants for his phone. While he scrolled to find an updated picture of his girlfriend’s newest dress, Chadwick emerged from the bathroom with a grin that quickly morphed into a scowl.
“Boy, what have I told you about laying your funky ass on my side of the bed?”
“I don’t even stink, Dad!”
“You don’t stink, yet. One move and we’ll all be in here passed out. Get up!”
Noah allowed Chadwick to push his body to the middle of the bed to make room for the three of them. Tasha allowed her son to rest his head on her shoulder so that she could join him in deciding how he would fix the serious issue of choosing prom attire.
“That’s jade green, honey. We’ll go see about getting you a new blazer after we pick the twins up from soccer practice.”
“Do you have new blazer money, son,” Chadwick asked in the midst of finishing an email.
Noah shrugged and cuddled closer to Tasha. “I mean, I still have some of what you gave me from when the team went to Miami for the league tournament.”
“So I have new blazer money and you don’t. And you’re stealing from me.”
“Aaron, stop it! I’ll get the blazer.”
“You gon’ spoil him, Cookie,” Chadwick warned, shaking his head at the way Noah’s grin spread wide as Tasha placed small kisses on his forehead.
“Oh, like how you spoil Noelle?”
Noah perked up to look at his father who smiled in return. “That’s different. That’s my princess. Well, one of my princesses.”
“Can I be one of your princesses, Pop?”
“No,” Chadwick deadpanned before cutting his eyes at his son. “And get out of my bed. We put an entire bench in here for you to sit your ass on and you still end up in my bed.”
“I think you’re just jealous because mama wants to hug me more than you.”
“Trust me, son, I get way more than hugs when you ain’t around.”
“Okay, that’s enough!”
All eyes shifted to focus on the broad smile and lean frame standing in the doorway as Micah entered the room. Her eyes twinkled at the first glimpse of her father who sat beaming across a few feet away.
Her vintage Howard sweatshirt looked vaguely familiar, a tidbit that Tasha picked up on as her oldest made a beeline for Chadwick.
“Why don’t you ever go home,” Noah grumbled when Micah forced him to scoot over by wiggling her body between his and Chadwick’s to give her favorite person a hug. “We pay all that money for you to live in DC and you’re always here.”
“Shut up, stinky, you don’t pay for nothin’. What did mama use to call you? Stink Man?”
“Don’t do this, Micah,” he mumbled.
“It was Stinka Butt! You been funky since you were born.”
Chadwick voiced his agreeance through the loud boom of his laughter, making Noah sit up to address his older sister.
“Okay, since you wanna cap like I wasn’t your favorite person when we were little, how ‘bout you tell mama about all them sweatshirts you took out of her closet.”
“AJ!”
Micah’s eyes grew wide at her brother’s tattle-telling before Tasha clearing her throat commanded attention.
“You been in my closet, little girl?”
“Daddy said I could! I was gonna ask but he told me to take them!”
“Aaron!”
Despite being caught red-handed, Chadwick began brainstorming ways to charm CoCo out of her anger.
“Queen, you look so good, you didn’t need those old clothes. You need some new shit to put on that beautiful body.”
Tasha pretended to be annoyed as Chadwick placed short, rapid pecks on her cheek until she relented and returned his affection. Exaggerated whispers of displeasure from Micah contrasted Noah’s proud smile and subtle nod to Chadwick.
“That was smooth, Dad. It ain’t how I would’ve done it, but it was alright for an old man.”
“Boy, hush,” Micah guffawed, earning a side eye. “You wish you had that much game.”
“Just because your boyfriends be some lames don’t mean I am. I’m a Boseman, ya feel me!”
Noah didn’t have to look back at Chadwick to know that his father was beaming as they completed their father-son handshake. Though they playfully argued at least once a day, anyone with knowledge of their dynamic knew that there was immense respect and admiration between the two.
Tasha and Micah’s eye rolls synchronized like a choreographed dance before Micah spoke up.
“You have only had one girlfriend your whole life. Nyah doesn’t know any better.”
“Nyah knows that I the best man for her. I’m smart, I look like my mama so, you know I’m handsome, and I puts it down!”
The moment the words left his mouth and Micah’s eyes went wide with realization and amusement, Noah knew that he had become too comfortable. Chadwick cleared his throat, preferring to keep his mouth closed and save himself from his wife’s line of questioning.
“You do what,” Tasha exclaimed as she pinched the soft spot under his arm. “What exactly are you putting down? Are you having sex, son?”
“Sex? What’s that? I am a Christian!” Chadwick cleared his throat again to grab Noah’s attention and shake his head as a warning.
Micah the subliminal message before swooping in to save the day. “Bubba, don’t we need to go to the mall? I gotta go pick up Mama’s birthday gift.”
“Y-yeah! I’ll meet you in the car!” Using the distraction as an opportunity to escape Tasha’s loosened grip, Noah sprang up from his position on the bed and bolted for the bedroom door.
Chadwick chuckled to ease the tension and grabbed his wallet from the nightstand. “Get your brother a new blazer and pick up the twins while you’re out, Boop. Take your time.”
“And buy me a new leotard? Thanks, Daddy! Love you, Mama!”
There was no time to protest before Micah was up and out of the room to do God knows what with her father’s credit card. Chadwick could only hope that they would take it easy on his pockets in exchange for his mission to save them from a verbal lashing.
Reaching over to grab Tasha’s hand, Chadwick set off to begin damage control. He pressed sweet kisses along CoCo’s arm until his lips reached the shell of her ear.
“C’mon, Cookie. I made sure he knows all the risks and how to protect himself.”
“So! I don’t want my baby having sex! And why didn’t he tell me,” CoCo pouted as she leaned over to rest her head on Chadwick’s shoulder.
“Because he still wants you to see him as your baby boy.”
“He is my baby boy. All of the kids are still my babies.”
“I know, sweetheart,” Chadwick smiled. “How about this? Let’s see if we still remember how to make babies. You know I puts it down.”
Chadwick’s attempt at a joke fell flat as Tasha scramble to break free from his hug. Finally giving in, he loosened his grip to watch her slide into her house shoes and stomp out of the room.
“What? Was it something I said? I love you, baby!”

Hey all, Dani here.
It’s Thursday again, and that means that it is time for another round of book recommendations. I have topics planned for these through the end of the year, and I’ve started to create some more options so I can keep this series going in the new year.
The recommendation posts I’ve done so far are: banned books, LGBTQ+, fantasy, paranormal, romance, sci-fi, and historical.
Right now I have these topics scheduled for the rest of 2017: classics, diverse reads, contemporary, memoir/biography/non-fiction, urban fantasy, and poetry.
So far for 2018, I have: time travel, standalones, duologies, trilogies, and series. If there are any other recommendation list topics you’d like to suggest, please let me know in the comments.
Okay, so now I’m going to jump into my recommendations. To be clear for this I am including comic bind-ups as well, as they are commonly referred to as graphic novels as well.
Sandman by Neil Gaiman. I finally finished this series this year and it is so wonderful and complex. Seriously, there are so many diverse characters, an interesting mythology, and a wide variety of story types. This can sometimes be seen with the difference in art styles as well. There are some story arcs that fit more into a historical genre or mystery or fantasy, etc. Each member of Dream’s family is fascinating, and this is a 10 volume collection I know I will read again, and I’m sure I’ll pick up details I missed the first time around.
Fables by Bill Willingham. This is a series I would absolutely recommend to people who like fairy tales, especially people who are fans of the TV show Once Upon a Time. I was recommended this series from a friend at work and I’m glad I gave it a shot. My favorite character is Bigby Wolf, otherwise known as the Big Bad Wolf. Let me tell you, the relationship that develops between him and Snow White is awesome. I’m not going to lie; I made a werewolf stuffed animal at Build-a-Bear and named it Bigby Werewolf. Basically, I’m saying that these are a fun take on fairy tales in the modern world and they are fantastic. I need to finish this series. It is certainly on my to-do list.
Rat Queens by Kurtis J Wiebe. I’m pretty sure I’ve gushed about these foul-mouthed and violent female adventurers many times already, but I’m going to mention them again here. If you like fantasy adventures, particularly a D&D-esque quest style story, this may be the series for you. To quote the description for the Volume 1 bind-up, Sass and Sorcery, this series follows: “Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief.” Let me just say that I would absolutely love to go on an adventure with these ladies. (Actually I think it would be awesome and probably hilarious if Betty ran into my lawful nice dwarven life cleric). Anyway, just give this series a shot. It is so worth it.
Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson. This series also follows a group of female adventurers, but they are more girl scouts than a crass adventuring party. Instead we follow Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley, as they spend the summer at camp and have all sorts of grand adventures, running into merfolk, bear people, and all sorts of other supernatural mischief. Really it is a fun story of friendship and is absolutely a worthwhile read.
Saga by Brian K Vaughan. So this recommendation works for fans of fantasy, fans of science fiction, and fans of romance. This is a Romeo and Juliet type story following a woman from a planet called Landfall and a man from Landfall’s moon called Wreath. The war between the two races has moved and expanded and has consumed what seems like most of the galaxy. But Alana and Marko end up falling in love and having a baby together, which makes them both targets from both sides of the war. What’s really fun about this space adventure that features technology and magic and ghosts (and sex and violence) and so much more, is that the narrator of this story is Alana and Marko’s daughter, Hazel. Come on, it’s a science fantasy romance adventure story. What more do you need?
The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen. Are you a fan of gods and mythology? Well then this series might be the one for you. “Every 90 years 12 gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead.” Why do they incarnate every 90 years? Why do they die in two years? Which gods appear in the series? This is such a fascinating story, where these god incarnates are celebrities, but just because they are powerful, it doesn’t mean that they will live forever. I don’t want to say anything to spoil any of the plot lines, but this is definitely one of my favorite series.
Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Everything on this list is something I have been introduced to at some point in the last few years. Scott Pilgrim is the newest (to me) of all of these. I saw the movie and read all 6 volumes for the first time this year thanks to my boyfriend. It is a fun geeky somewhat video-game inspired adventure tale, following Scott Pilgrim as he takes on all of Ramona Flower’s exes for the right to date her. Yes it is sometimes absurd, but I really enjoyed the humor and fun of it all. This is also one of the few times in my life where I saw the movie before I read the source material. Turns out that I like both of them, so I’d say they are both worth checking out.
Well, that’s about all for today. I’m currently about an hour into a 12 hour shift at work, so I think I’m going to see how much reading and/or writing I can get done before I go home. Hopefully I read enough to get another book review up tomorrow. If not then I’ll have a book tag up.
Recommendations: Graphic Novels Hey all, Dani here. It's Thursday again, and that means that it is time for another round of book recommendations.
