Old Bio
Bio in progress #DSM #Trident #ColtWinchester 08-17-22
Name: Dean Winchester Alias’: “Colt” Age: 38 Gender: Male Species: Human Birthdate: (01/24/77) Country of Origin: United States Birthplace: Lawerence, Kansas Ethnicity: White Past Occupation: Navy SEAL, mechanic, hunter and at times a cop Current Occupation: Co-Owns Blackwater Agency under pretenses of being a pilot and team leader. Language(s): English, Spanish and Arabic Religion: Doesn’t much believe in religion. – Background: Came from a family of hunters on his Mom’s side. His father and mother both hunted on occasion but managed to keep the family stable till she was killed in a hunt when Dean was young. His father became bitter and abusive after that. Dean took care of his younger brother Sam. Sam angry that Dean would not just leave their father and walk away with him led to Sam leaving. At seventeen he nearly beat Dean to death after finding out Dean had been raped by several members of the highschool football team he quarterbacked for. John was unable to accept his son couldn’t have stopped it. Dean spent three weeks in intensive care after the beating. John had scared even himself that day. Dean turned to the military where he enlisted as a mechanic. Wartime called for heavy deployment and Dean soon found himself front and center of it. His hunting skills proved extremely useful in combat moving him up the ranks in record time. His commanding officer told him he thought Dean should try for the teams. And that is what he did putting forth all his effort towards that one goal. During BUD’s Dean fell victim to assault again, the teams are hard you’re put through hell trying to toughen you up for capture and interrogation. His commanding officer took things way to far leaving Dean even more messed up than before. He never complained and the rest of the recruits had not been there so no one knew but he and Granger the guy who’d done it. Granger stayed on his ass trying to get Dean to quit which he wouldn’t pissing Granger off further. So anytime Granger could he disciplined Dean until it turned into something else entirely. Dean became extremely submissive to Granger which Granger took advantage of. Dean graduated BUD’s was picked up by the Teams and for at least the first couple of years stayed in a secret relationship with Granger until Granger ended it finding a younger version of Dean to prey on. During his last tour he was captured, an extraction went bad and their rendezvous had been compromised. Rescued eighteen days later by his unit lead by Ethan Knight, Colt retired from the teams suffering from severe mental trauma. They began a secret romance after that and eventually married. Ethan turned out to be his guardian angel of sorts. Arriving in a town called Rutherford that was experiencing weird anomaly that was best described as an aurora borealis look and feel. Colt and Ethan found it overrun with the walking dead. Something they’d never seen before. In and effort to free the last remaining survivors Dean was overrun and killed. Ethan in his grief disseminated the town with his angelic powers and then revived Colt only to discover that they’d been thrust into an altered reality with no way home. The two struggled with bouts of jealously and fights. – Education: High School Diploma, extensive military training, PADI certified instructor, NREMT certified paramedic. Licensed for a MPL pilot and commercial can operate rotorcraft and fixed winged. Weapons/Offensive equipment: You name it he can operate it. Transportation: Several vehicles – Recent pictures: Blood type: O Negative Height: 6 foot Weight: 185 Eye Color: Hazel Hair: (color and length) dirty blonde, short and spiked Skin: (Color/complexion) medium and freckled Shoe size: 11 Figure/build: Muscular – Distinguishing marks: -Tattoo(s): Tribal wings across his shoulder blades -Scars: four inch scar near the middle of his back. Danny’s name carved into his right shoulder. -Clothing style: Depends on his mood and activity. -Ethan’s name on his right hip. – Currently lives: Austin, Texas Living Arrangements: 500 Acres Ranch – Hobbies: Diving, flying, playing music and cooking among other things Strengths: Strong sense of duty to protect. Weaknesses: Impulsive and self destructive – Love interest(s): (Wife) Qhuinn (Former husband ) Danny Lorien Winchester, (former husband) Jake Valance Winchester, (former husband) Ethan Knight, (former fiancé) Chance Zaveri (former lover) Jason Hayes , (former lover) Asher Daniels , (former lover) Jo Harvelle A friend described Colt and Ethan’s marriage as “tumultuous” and that’s a very accurate description. But it was all filled with a tremendous amount of love that I don’t think will ever go away completely. They fought hard, loved hard and played hard. Both had faults and in the end neither could trust the other so they had to part ways. Colt always had a thing for Castiel, it was the blue eyes so innocent looking. He was smaller and even though an angel Colt felt the need to care for him. Castiel never returned such feelings and Colt accepted they would never be anything but friends. Colt met Jake one night in a club after getting a divorce. Jake was vibrant, sexy and fun loving. A one night deal turned into something much more. On vacation to be married Colt’s ex-husband showed up to confess he was still in love wanting to give it another go. Colt broke things off with Jake only to find out Ethan didn’t want him to even remain friends with Jake. Colt stood up to him and that was the end of that. The damage had been done but Jake took him back then Colt disappeared out of thin air for nearly a month without a word. He’d fled unable to handle the guilt and stress. After showing back up he found Jake to have others in his life and he didn’t begrudge him of it but he felt like he couldn’t make up for things so he tried to make it work knowing he wasn’t enough. During one of Jake and Colt’s wild threesomes came along Danny Lorien. Colt had been through stuff like this before and adding a third member to a relationship was hard. He’d suggested some rules to keep their heads clear etc but Danny found he couldn’t accept just friends with benefits from Jake and Colt. Colt and Danny began to talk more an more one thing led to another and they found themselves spending more time together than Colt was with Jake. Colt feeling like Jake would never give up others turned to Danny seeking love and marriage. But it appears they were both kidding themselves about being able to just be the two of them because Jake had left his mark on both of them. In the end it didn’t work out and Colt ended up with Ethan again then some lovers in between. Then he entered into a threesome relationship with Chance Zaveri and Jason Hayes to former SEAL buddies. That ship went down in flames Colt ended up seeking Danny out for friendship and advice. Colt however starting asking Danny to be with him again. Danny turned him down time after time till finally he said yes but ended not long after. Currently Colt is with Qhuinn Sexual Orientation: Bi – Dominant Hand: Right Diet: Anything good. Virgin?: Nope Drinker?: Yes Smoker?: Yes Drug user?: At times but if he’s using drugs then something is very wrong with him. Sure signs he’s in a tailspin. Other addictions?: Sex it’s a big one and creates a lot of trouble in his life. Adrenaline rushes. Pet peeves: Bossy women, snobs and uncleanliness. Personality: On the surface he’s usually pretty friendly but keeps the conversation light. Usually asking lots of questions about whoever he’s talking with because he likes to get to know people. Clams up when anyone starts asking questions about himself for the most part less it’s the usual stuff. He’d rather be in the back of the room watching the fun go on and see people happy than be in the forefront. He’s got serious trust issues and self hangups. To the casual observer he’s just a twisted playboy who likes to mindfuck people. Few know him for what he really is and even less than that give a damn and he knows that and has it burnt into his mind. He’s got a bad tendency to offer himself up on a platter in order not to be alone. The thought of having to be alone makes him break out into a cold sweat. He’s got demons he runs from all the time. He figures if he’s got up in someone else he’ll be to damn busy to have to deal with his own shit. You have a guy who’d give his life for a stranger without a second thought and a soul that feels like he isn’t worthy at all of any comfort or love. He’s openly gay now but he knows people see him as less of a man for it and it hurts. Daddy issues a mountain high, he’s the failed little solider wanting love from a man who can’t look beyond the disgust he see’s of his son that wasn’t strong enough. Colt’s sexuality stems from all this and became severely twisted and altered with the rapes. His longing for his fathers love leaves him wide open for any dominant male that steps in and takes his reigns. He longs for punishment and control because that’s the only treatment his father ever gave. Being told what to do and how to do it come normal as breathing for him and it makes him feel safe. Disposition: Caring and compassionate but always pushing the limits and trying to make people laugh. Likes: Details, playing guitar, singing and dancing. Doing things for the people he cares for. Dislikes: Laziness, bullies, people being mistreated in general. Motivations: Wants to settle down and live his life with Qhuinn and his kids. Morals: Depends on what’s going on. But making people feel good and seeing them happy causes him to do things that no one else would even consider doing. He doesn’t like being lied to and he hates lying himself but he will do it if it spares another’s feelings or softens a blow. Fears/Phobias: Being buried alive, being alone. Favorite food: seafood Mexican food Favorite drink: beer, Jack Daniels but has a Crown n’ Coke now and then Favorite color: black Favorite sport: Football Family: -Parents: John and Mary Winchester (His father’s alive in his dimension, mother died) -Siblings: Sam Winchester, his relationship with Sam was strong growing up but John’s constant abuse and heavy hand with Colt left Sam wanting to get them both away from him. Sam tried to get Colt to leave John. Colt told him he just couldn’t do that to John, Sam took off and cut ties with him. I think more out of not wanting to witness John’s abuse towards Colt. Colt always felt his father didn’t mean the shit he said and did. He saw John as hurting, mourning the lose of his wife. John would tell Colt he was just like his Mom and Colt figured that made him even more sad to have him around but he tried to be there for him. The stuff in high school though pretty much killed any hopes of things getting better. -Others close: Bobby Singer, Bobby died while on a hunt with Colt in his dimension when he was seventeen. Colt feels responsible for it. Bobby was like a real father would have been to him. Friends: Many although he has a knack for pissing them off so on any given day one my pop up out of the shadows. Offspring: Twins but his ex Jake has them and he hasn’t seen them since Jake/Zoey had them. He’s only told one person about the twins and that was Ethan. Alyson and Ian Winchester are their names. They were born 8/29/2001. It’s a subject he never broaches because it hurt’s to fucking much to think about it. Enemies: The list is long. Sexual kinks: Depends on the situation but he’s into heavy BDSM, he’s a masochist switch. Not much bother’s him but if he’s playing a submissive to someone he has be very careful who is taking those reigns. If not handled right he’ll end up mentally unstable and seek to hurt himself. As of late he’s more dominant than he’s ever been. In the past Colt had wanted a family badly and Jake had saw that. Castiel had offered to change Jake’s vessel into a female for a period of time to allow him to have Colt’s children. So for nearly a year Jake had been transformed into a beautiful brunette and bore a set up twins for Colt. One boy Ian and one girl Allison. Once Jake transformed back he disappeared with the twins fearing that Colt’s job would put them into danger. Colt searched for many years for the kids and Jake but was unable to find them. So he never spoke of them to his family and tried to reason that they were safer not being around him. Currently Colt and Qhuinn live at The Winchester Ranch located just outside Austin, Texas. Their base of operations is their firm BlackWater that acts as special ops group that helps with governments can’t go in and do a job. But they also hunt the other is a cover and pays the bills. They don’t want for anything. The Ranch sits on 500 acres of land and they have properties around the world as smaller offices. Colt was unlucky to enough to get played by an angel by the name of Anael, during their conversion he’d mentioned his kids. He’d told no one of except for Ethan about the twins and he thought he was just talking to a random chick who seemed nice. She offered him a deal to find the twins to him and bring them home. He turned her down knowing that it would put them in more danger. He’d gotten home that day and drink himself to sleep holding a photo Jake had given of them 18 years ago. John had found Colt passed out and saw the photo putting two and two together. The angel showed up at the ranch and John made the deal without Colt knowing. Now it’s just a matter of time before they are brought to the ranch, John having made good on his end of the deal. Some Major kinks: Watersports, Imprisonment, Odaxelagnia (Biting or Being Bitten) , Vampires, Anal Sex, Figging, Impact Play, Sensation Play, Deprivation, Breath Play, Begging, Collaring, Discipline, Cuckolding, Degradation, Dirty Talk, Face Slapping, Agrexophilia (Being seen or caught having sex) , Voyerurism, Group Sex, Triolism (two people of one sex, 1 of the other) 21+MCRP #DSM #RP @DSM_RP

Recreate His Worldly Glory ch23

Chapter 23: The Chant and the Light Summary: In an attempt at diplomacy, the Starkhaven Chantry has invited Sebastian to act as chanter for a day. In another act of diplomacy, Sebastian accepted. Accompanied by Fenris, Hawke spends the day listening to the Chant, contemplating the past and pondering her path forward. (Note:  This chapter is from Padi Hawke’s POV.)
Word Count: ~10200 this chapter, total so far ~133900
This story starts at the end of Dragon Age 2 and goes through into Dragon Age: Inquisition. This fic is complete and will update once a week, hopefully on Thursdays as my schedule allows.
This chapter’s wonderful art is by @blasteddoodles and was originally posted here. Thank you so much again!
READ IT HERE ON AO3
READ IT FROM THE START ON AO3
Excerpt from Chapter 23:
The Chantry is warm to the point of stuffy, the air heavy with the scent of incense and perfume and people. Sebastian’s voice is captivating and the Chant is beautiful and melodic, but all of this combines to send Hawke’s thoughts wandering. Her gaze moves from Sebastian to the stained glass window and back again; try as she might, it is impossible to follow just one of the strands of light all the way up. It is her vision that fails her - the light itself is still, disturbed only by tendrils of candle smoke and motes of dust that she is too far away to see.
One cannot see music any more than light gives off a sound, yet as Hawke listens, she wonders if there could be an exception for the Maker’s Light. It looks so solid, so deeply colored where it falls onto nobles and statues and singers, that if Hawke were to run her hand through it, she would hear notes like the wind chime that hung at the corner of the porch at their home on Lothering. Surely the Maker’s Light comes in many forms so that everyone can experience it: as light, as sound for those who cannot see, or as warmth for those who can neither see nor hear the Chant.
The Lothering Chantry was a much simpler building, smaller and built of wood and cobblestone. The air smelled like old tinder and wax rather than incense and perfume. The windows there were also colored glass, but the patterns were abstract and the colors paled in comparison to the intricate work of art in Starkhaven. The Maker is likely uninterested in what the Chantry looks like, but as a monument to man’s love of the Maker, Lothering’s Chantry was modest at best, a humble entreaty to Andraste to watch over them and protect them. That didn’t stop the chanters from singing with the same amount of faith and devotion, however.
She sighs and shakes her head, drawing as deep a breath as she can in the warm, close air. That Chantry, like their home and the wind chime, was left behind when they fled the Blight, and it’s likely there’s nothing left of them now. Before her, she sees an image of a stone statue of Andraste standing in a pile of smoking rubble, and she squeezes her eyes closed to banish it.

TW// self harm, beatings, suicide, death
i remember storming home first, leaving family members behind. my thighs were pinched with thongs and i was dragged and locked out of the house in the cold. i was given a jug of water, some fruits and my schoolbag.
when sh did the same, he was lectured and was told not to do it again.
i remember accidentally lashing out and i was forced to eat cili padi at 10 pm.
when sh and iq did it, they were only shouted at.
i remember the day you found my goodbye card for my guy friend in primary school. i was scolded and shouted at and also beaten up.
when sh and iq exchanged love letters with girls, nothing was said or done.
i remember asking if i could go out with my friend at 9. i wasnt allowed to because i failed my exams.
sh and iq are able to go out even when their results are bad.
i remember wanting to go to a level camp so bad i wrote a note, begging to be allowed to go. but i got scolded for writing the note and i wasnt allowed to go. i wasnt allowed to go to camps till i was 13.
sh was able to go to camps between ages 11 and 12 with no problems.
i remember being told that if i failed PSLE i will be married off to a random guy. i was told to aim for 200. i scored 199. i didnt get to hear any “good job” or “you did well” as we had to rush to KL as someone passed on. in fact i didnt get to hear anything even after the trip.
i remember sunday practices. waking up to reciting the timetable at the door no matter who was passing by. no breakfast till youre satisfied. and on weekdays after school, i’d have to recite them on a stool in front of the window where the sun was merciless. i remember when i collapsed due to the heat. i was in pain when i regained consciousness. i was asked to eat but while i was getting food i was slapped. i was laughed at by sh and iq.
i joined netball at 8. i was forced to quit at 9 because i didnt do well for my exams. i wasnt in any ccas till i was 13. but i couldnt choose what i wanted. i was forced to join a uniformed group.
sh joined a dance cca and it was approved. iq joined badminton but quit. then he joined malay dance. both times it was approved. he was in the prefect team too. you kept giving him chances after chances even though he keeps failing. why couldnt i get the same amount of chances?
it was sh’s turn to take PSLE. when i texted about his results (i was out), you told me he did better than me. i was shocked as to how he could get 200 and above. he dropped out of the normal stream to foundation. he only scored 130. you were so proud of him. he went into a technical school and you supported him so much. i couldnt even choose which school i wanted to go to. “choose a school where you dont have to spend 5 years studying” but the first choice that you put would have led me to spend 5 years in secondary school. in the end i got the last choice that you put.
i remember you finding out that i was talking to a guy when i was 10. we were just talking. you found out and beat me up. i couldnt walk properly for the rest of the day.
sh and iq are saying upfront that they have girlfriends but nothing is happening to them.
i got my first tiny phone that barely works at 13. i got my first actual, second hand phone at 14. and an actual phone that wasnt passed down at 15
they got their first brand new phones at 8 and 12 respectively.
i remember entering a new school with an old bag that sags while they continued being in the same school with new bags.
i remember you asking me to choose a new bag and i asked about them. you said they wont be getting the same. i felt special. till you asked them to get new bags too.
you gave me an anello bag for school once. i felt special again because i was the only one who had it. but a week later they have it too.
i remember only going out with my friends at 15. but my curfew was before dusk.
iq went out at 9. sh went out at 13.  you gave sh a curfew. he came home hours later and didnt even get scolded. i brought it up and you acknowledged it but nothing happened.
i remember going home late after school. im a teen am i not supposed to have fun with my friends? but you brought it up to one of the upper ups in school. i was put on probation for months. it was embarrassing. teachers thought that i committed a crime. an innocent me is getting probation? why? because i go home late. i cant say that i have things after school at the last minute because you say its ridiculous and bullshit.
sh goes home late. you caught him at the playground, mall, void decks. you scold him. and he does it again. but nothing major happens. iq calls or texts you that he is staying in school and you allow him to.
i remember self harming between ages 12 to 15. i was asked to go counselling. now i realised that the counselling was nothing. it didnt help at all. they put the blame on me. when you found out about this, i remember you scolding me. “what is there to be depressed about? youre only 14. all you have to do is study” i was scolded so much for being depressed and for self harming. you had to go for some parents counselling thingy too. i remember that one time i hit an all time low and self harmed again. sh snitched on me and told you about my scars. you got so mad when you saw the scars. i remember what you said to me. “why dont you do it deeper? end the burden once and for all. it’s so burdening and tiring to go to counselling after work?” i remember crying non stop. till we meet him. i was crying in the train. sh and iq was pointing at me and laughing. what you didnt know was that i was typing my suicide notes. i planned my suicide. when we met him, you told him and he glared at me so hard. i was given the silent treatment for so long. when you asked me why, i lied and say that im hated by people. how do i tell the cause of my depression that they are the cause of my depression?
i remember when i stopped self harming and counselling sessions are done. you got new piercings and i asked you if it hurts. you would always retaliate by saying that me self harming hurts more than getting pierced. you consistently did this while i was trying to heal. i remember when jonghyun passed on. i broke down a lot. i cried a lot. i revealed my vulnerable side. but i was mocked. “when a celebrity dies, she’s crying her eyes out. i wonder if she would even cry when her mom passes away.” i literally had to excuse myself so i dont break down in front of you.
i remember that you talked to me before i went on to pursue my tertiary education. you said you were disappointed in me. you said you didnt understand why i was content with my shitty results. i was content because the entire of 2018 was peak depression period. i could barely study because it was so overwhelming. the fact that i managed to even go somewhere was huge to me. i knew i disappointed you a lot because i was the only one who managed to maintain the standard and express stream. you didnt expect me to be where i am now. i put some money from my salary to pay my school fees and uniform for the first term. i already disappointed you so i didnt want to burden you. but you took it the wrong way. you thought i was trying to overthrow your responsibilities as a parent. you said that i was excited to grow up and get rid of you from my life. i remember being so shocked. yes i want to grow up so i leave this household but i have never once thought of getting rid of you.
i remember and i know that you are very against what im doing now and what i want to do in the future. but im 17 now. im turning 18 soon. how long more are you gonna make my decisions for me? why cant i choose what i want to be?
why do you assume that my depression is gone just because i dont have to go for counselling? why do you still joke about me self harming? why do you blame whatever sh and iq do on me? “monkey see, monkey do” what did i do? im still harming myself in a way. i picked up smoking at 13. and i started drinking recently. i have no idea where im gonna end up. a successful writer? at the void deck passed out? on the road surrounded by my own blood? i really dont know where i’ll end up. i dont know how long more i can take your hostile words. i hear that im useless every day. i hear that im hopeless every day. you always say that you dont understand us. why dont you try? why dont you try to put down your ego for a bit and try to understand us? try to understand me. try to talk to me. dont you notice that i never talk about how im doing? all i say is that im tired. and you scold me. “if youre tired then dont go to school” you dont even know when i get sick unless its the holidays. we stay under the same roof yet you dont know me at all. and you didnt raise me. for almost 10 years of my life, i was raised by my grandparents. please for once. stop talking and listen. understand. comfort instead of scolding. please. im losing my mind.

Henry weds Vivian
It started so early in the morning... ... I was up till 2am? Getting my script right and other what-nots.
And then I was up at 6.30am on Sunday morning, showered and apparently spent an hour on my make-up and was late to the bride’s house. Had only made it just in time to prepare... ... (phew!)
Tumblr media
The first thing I did when I got there was to prepare the platter that was meant for the gatecrash challenge.
酸。甜。苦。辣。Sour -- Sweet -- Bitter -- Spicy
Sour; sour sweets with lemon juice with pulp. (only because the bride said that the groom is able to tolerate sourness)
Sweet; honey
Bitter; crushed bittergourd (I am perfectly evil)
Spicy; beehoon fried in the Korean spicy noodle sauce with chilli padi
Vivian’s family was warm and welcoming when I walked in, as they usually are.
Tumblr media
The bride on her big day. I cannot stress enough about how stressful and tiring Sunday was...
Tumblr media
The time soon came for the groom to arrive with his entourage. His amazingly shy entourage. In their defence, it was their first gate crash and it’s quite differently done in Singapore compared to our Neighbours.
A little backstory; Nang (Vivian) & myself and much later Henry.
Tumblr media
So Nang and I met in poly roughly 8 years ago. Let me show you what this means in human terms.
Tumblr media
This is her 8-year-old nephew. He is our age representative!
We have been friends for the last 8 years and she is my first Burmese friend. And I am incredibly happy to have been part of her joy.
It’s amazing; really how we’ve kept in touch through the adulthood, the jobs and the further studies. And now hopefully through marriage. Because you know, a lot more time will be spent on building their family.
Henry...
Tumblr media
I officially met Henry during Christmas of 2016. After he had proposed and we were properly introduced to each other.
Couldn’t be happier for them. ~
Back to Sunday Morning.
The groom arrives with his entourage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let me walk you through the gatecrash.
The groom comes up with his buddies (groomsman) and they would have to fetch the bride from her place and if they’re leaning towards superstition they would have to reach the bride’s place at the auspicious hour.
When they arrive, the bridesmaids who are there would make them jump through hoops, sometimes literally. So we had the groom eat a series of food. (Refer to the first photo)
So they have their meaning. And I’ll try my best to explain.
Sour; sour sweets with lemon juice with pulp. .[explanation; none that I can think of... ...]
Sweet; honey [explanation; to always be sweet to one another]
Bitter; crushed bittergourd (I am perfectly evil) [explanation; to go through the bitter times together]
Spicy; beehoon fried in the Korean spicy noodle sauce with chilli padi [explanation; ummm, in my opinion; hot and heavy _ _ _, you know [maintain PG-advicement]
And other foods like glutinous rice balls for family togetherness, a union of 2 souls.
All right, gatecrash (this is going to be a looooooong post)
Henry and his groomsmen came and they handed over the first red-packet...
Tumblr media
“not good enough... ...” (takes the first cup in that sequence)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We essentially rejected every red packet that came our way. So this proceeded until the last cup was gone and even though he had passed my obstacle there was more to come. Also, his groomsmen stood at least a feet away from him. (hahahahhaha)
Tumblr media
But through it all that we threw at him, he endured and the moment came when he cast his eyes upon his bride; was so sweet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it was time for the bride and groom to go over to the groom’s side of the family. But before that, a short photo-taking.
Tumblr media
With the bride’s parents’.
Tumblr media
The newlyweds with the bride’s family. 3 Generations together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what I like about small scaled celebrations; friends and family together as one. Personally, it’s heartwarming to me. But to each their own.
And now it’s time to go... ... And at the other side... ...
Tea ceremony! The acknowledgement of family members; mum, dad, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tumblr media
Eating of glutinous rice balls filled with peanuts or red bean paste to signify the union of 2 souls.
Tumblr media
They soon returned and it was time for family acknowledgement of the bride’s family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mum and dad
Tumblr media
Elder brother
Tumblr media
Second brother and sister-in-law.
Tumblr media
Dear little things were not happy with serving tea.
LUNCH!
Tumblr media
Nathan~~~!!! He’s so cute!
Tumblr media
This was probably the only time they had to themselves until after the dinner.
Tumblr media
It’s truly truly amazing how they’ve so genuinely welcomed Henry into their family and I saw how Henry’s family welcomed Nang. This is not ideal, I’m sorry, this is how it’s meant to be. And now how people pry about how the in-laws can’t get along and how “my daughter married the wrong man” or “my son married the wrong women.” That’s not how a family is... ...
I love how embracing each family was; everyone came together as one.
And I cannot emphasize enough how they’ve made me feel like I was one of them too. About 2 months before the wedding there was food tasting held by the hotel and they invited me to join them. And I felt so welcomed. Beyond words can say.
Tumblr media
MOVING ON!
Tumblr media
After lunch the bride and her family went to the hotel and I went home to collect my gown and other whatnots and left immediately.
[had never taken grab so many times in a single day in my life! and oh the conversations were so interesting! Well, on the account that I was wearing a pretty dress and carrying a gown - who wouldn’t have questions?]
Tumblr media
So I got to the hotel and immediately settled into hair and makeup! WOW!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did mine myself. Pretty proud of the end product. I am still super in love with my lipstick from kat von d...
Tumblr media
Yes, that’s the gown...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Presenting the bride!!
Tumblr media
The groom.
It was really really rushed despite the fact that I was there early. And because Irina could only be there after work so it was even more rushed for her.
Let's see... bride and groom finished their hair and makeup. Got ready and we were supposed to have a de-briefing about 30 minutes prior to the solemnisation. And we were nowhere near ready 10 minutes prior.
Tumblr media
The only good thing I got out of being there early was having some private time with both the bride and the groom for me to present my little gift. A drawing of 2 rings bound together and a hand-written card with words of love, would hardly call them words of wisdom.
Tumblr media
This picture is too sweet... ... I’m glad I got some time alone with them before dinner.
Tumblr media
Mum and dad putting on the veil.
Solemnisation!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a beautiful ceremony!
More photo-taking as the guests adjourned to the cocktail reception on level 5.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t even know where to begin on the pre-dinner cocktail reception. Let’s see if I can still get this right; the cocktail reception is at the roof garden on level 5 and dinner will be held in the straits room on level 4.
RIGHT.
Tumblr media
7pm came and we moved the reception table to the 4th floor.
Tumblr media
It’s time!
Tumblr media
“GOOD EVENING YOU LOVELY PEOPLE!”
Being an emcee (host) was an amazing experience! It was exhilarating and altogether exciting!
So ladies and gentlemen let’s rise to welcome, for the first time Mr and Mrs Ye Linn Thu!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire night was caught between “putting out fires” and getting the guest entertained.
Tumblr media
“Ladies and gentlemen please rise again and let’s welcome the newlyweds back!”
Tumblr media
They gave their speeches and I got mine ready for them.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Never seen a love so pure and so true.
No words can describe the emotions in my chest. The dictionary is finally put to the test.
So I suppose this is what I want to say. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and bliss. I wish it through the good, the bad and the ugly days. And that this day will let you one day fondly reminisce.
The night flew by like the wind.
More photos were taken with family and friends.
Tumblr media
Henry’s family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nang’s family
Tumblr media
Friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AFTER PARTY!!~~ WHOO WHOO~
Tumblr media
Pupils dilated. Cheeks flushed. Body burning up. Inhibitions lowered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the night ends here.
It was unbelievably incredible to have been a part of this BIG day.
To Henry and Vivian!
To Nang and Henry, if you’re reading this “I couldn’t be happier about the union of the both of you. Your wedding still seems so surreal to me but then again it makes so much sense that it has happened. Thank you for having me for your joyous occasion! Love you both.”

Everything You Should Know About Diving In Limassol And How To Visit Some Of The Most Famous And Popular Shipwrecks
If you want to go on an adventure where you could explore the mystical underwater world, visit age-old shipwrecks and coral reefs, or just swim among some sea creatures, there is no better place for open water diving than Limassol.
You may have heard about the 40-year-old Zenobia wreck that lies at a depth of 42mon a seabed in the Mediterranean waters of the island of Cyprus but exploring the crystal-clear ocean and seeing many beautiful and mysterious shipwrecks for yourself, is an experience never to be forgotten.
In addition to Cyprus's rich history and many land attractions, it is especially the waters of this Mediterranean island that attract thousands of visitors annually, many of whom are of course experienced open water divers. Limassol is also known as one of the best and most popular leisure dive sites that you can ever explore when visiting Cyprus, and two of the main reasons are Costandis and Lady Thetis
Both are artificial marine reefs that were formed after two vessels were deliberately submerged by the government of Cyprus, for this intended purpose. As a benefit to divers, it also offers spectacular dive sites at 23m and 18m respectively on the seabed.
The Costandis is a Russian Trawler of 30m in length that was submerged in 23m with her top deck, upwards. She truly is an amazing wreck that is now home to a great variety of sea life, including a couple of Banded Bream, massive shoals of Amberjacks, Moray's, Damsel Fish, Saddle Bream, Trumpet Fish, some sea turtles, and sometimes Dolphins.
Its most prominent residents a massive Grouper (affectionately known as George), who often joins and welcomes divers on their explorations. When diving this site, you should also keep an eye out for the growing number of Lionfish. This artificial reef is also very suitable for teaching specialties.
Lady Thetis
This artificial reef is a passenger ship that was built in Germany and now rests in an upright position on the bottom of the sea at a depth of 18 meters. It is conveniently accessible for open water divers and home to a diverse array of marine life. Buoys mark her Port and Bow, as they do the Costandis, but all are close to the wreck, and she is usually visible on the descent from the Buoy line. On both wrecks caused by corrosion in the last 6 years, be wary of sharp objects.
If you just feel like exploring these wrecks from the outside or swim around them, there is typically no official requirement other than being a certified open water diver. For experienced divers, there are several sites around Cyprus to explore, including the Sea Caves, The Stage, the Amphitheatre, Coralia, Dinosaur Bay, Pistol Bay, and the Channel, which are just of the many actual sites. They are located at different depths ranging between six to around 30 meters, but exploring these sites on your own is not recommended.
Diving conditions in Limassol are mostly idyllic as the island is blessed with clean, clear warm water, abundant marine life, and wreck-laden seabed. For the best diving experiences when visiting the island, is to purchase a diving package at a local, well-established, and recognized diving centre. Also, make sure you go diving with a company that has a lot of diving permits. This allows them to choose the best dive sites, and you can choose dive packages that suit your needs and budget.
For many underwater photographers, a visit to Limassol is the perfect opportunity to film some of the most charismatic aquatic species of the underwater world, but whatever the reason for your visit, to partake in this spectacular underwater world is something which any individual should do at least once in his lifetime and tick it off his bucket list.

2 - woke up at 7 am, didnt shower lmao, off to kiara for vaccination. Waited for a bit and i finally got it. ate mamdaging pesto rice with beef at kamkan w/ ren ness ara akisyah. talked at studied osce a bit. waited for mom to pick me up. until when do i need someone else to pick me up. i feel helpless and i hate that i cant just ride my motorbike because its too tiring. went back and dad got mad at me bcs i didnt greet him when leaving and entering the house. I truly didnt see him when i entered even though i heard sumn lmao. He said sumn along the lines of "you can always leave if u dont like me" (which is lowkey appealing). I cried bcs i felt sad and annoyed with our terrible emotional parent-daughter relationship. Hold the tears for a bit to study with clara. Darkened the room and slept still in my going-out clothes. I did not shower today lmao,,,,
3 - woke up at 10 am. Tryout and review w clara. Psych coaching. Psych practice with irun. Called lau and dajen bcs hes leving to medan. Randomly checked my email and my intern submission, which i emailed yesterday, that turns out the doctor replied at 8pm yesterday asking for interview today 11 am. And i saw it @ 6 pm. Aka super late. The stupidest thing ive ever done in FKUI. No cap. :( i panicked and it gave me a reason to talk with dad (asking how to reply) so i guess its a form of effort to banish the awkwardness between us. Studied w clara. I hope the doctor can forgive me. Its one loose end after the other lately.
4 - went to starbucks with atikah. got treated matcha latte yayy. cicil osce. called clara to learn imunisasi. went to kaleyo w atikah clara, ate bebek muda cabe ijo yumm. talked abt a lot of things in a span of 1-2 hours. we’re all pragmatist lmaoo.

9 - went to merra (ara and nessa’s place) but mom drove dad to the airport first. stome osce study, group consolidation for osce, tried mad bagel (the garlic cream cheese and tuna salad). the bagel was quite dense and fulfilling. the garlic cream cheese is quite heavy. arrived at home by 9 pm, went straight to sleep
10 - omg dr eva contacted me again :”) and i got the chance to be ecmocard research assistant. osce study. line call with ara. matcha latte. studied in juan’s room bcs it was so noisy. the keyboard i ordered arrived lolll cant wait to try. i dont know if its the anxiety or fear but i cant sleep and forced myself to sleep 11pm-ish
11 - osce. Went early to learn sumn more w ara tri. Osce (i forgot opv for the 5 mo old baby in peds station 😭 there was dr yogi omg) prayed zuhur and ashar in merra while waiting for pick up (i rly wish i could just bring my own vehicle but motorbike is rly tiring). Finally tried the mini keyboard, with earphones on. Practiced the song aku bukan untukmu by rossa lmao bu sihar taught us that in 33. I felt rly excited and not sleepy afterwards (that "normal" feeling with nothing looming). Its been a while since i tried something new, voluntarily. I guess its kind of what i felt when i tried the korean duolingo. That lasted for a couple months. Lets see how this keyboard thingy goes
12 - finally finished reviewing to oneshot (took ages lmao). Lazed around
13 - inten ukmppd w ness ren ara @ merraaa always. Went through 5 pdfs. Tried fastfit chicken burger and sweet potato fries. Quite fulfilling. Went back home and straight to bed (didnt eat anymore)

Went to tamel to get stuff (nebeng oca uye), climbed jembor to get to akis et al. Went to aeon (super crowded tffff), followed by ikea (parked at decathlon). Ate at both places (shared portion w kris lmaoo we get full quick). Aeon sushi and ikea meatball. So fulll. Went out of ikea to be briefed by dr Debby (ecmocard) and put my stuff to mom's car. Went in ikea again. And finally we went back. such a good sleep yall
22 - relaxed and i mean RELAXXXED. woke up and slept again. showered to prepare to go to harkit for intern briefing. i was late (thanks daan mogot road) and had to grabbike from untar. put on some sheet mask (natrep rose) bcs im realizing i need to fix my face and look decent for this new environment lmaoo.
23 - left home at 7 am, went through highway (i aint repeating daan mogot tragedy again). walked a bit backwards bcs the hightway exit was infront of dharmais. super slow progress on entering medical datas. took half a day to get one. and another half for the other. ate marugame udon, somay, chicken katsu and otak otak. we finished after maghrib and im writing this while waiting for mom
24 -  tried salted egg dori rice from salt inc. its quite salty and eneg inducing (a bit more than eatlah), but for the price (19k after cashback) i wont complain. Went back home before maghrib but there was still some medical record stuff i did in my room.
25 - magang as usual. Tried chicken egg salad from salad hut. Bought ice french hazelnut coffee from lawson coz i just cant take it anymore (the slump and sleepyness). I feel like the moment that sugary beverage enters my system i rise like a freshly watered plant. First meeting with dr eva and the others
26 - felt so tired even in the morning. Its 9 am and im already ordering janjiw coffee (with hazelnut and milo, quite sweet. Like a mix of kopiko and milo). Slow progress today i dunno why. Lunch is nayam rica2 and egg for 21k. Went back home by tj and mom picked me at gajah 2

Let's check out Cambodia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After around 19 months in Thailand I felt it was time to look for new pastures and decided to move to Cambodia.  Some of you may be thinking, ‘What!! why would he do that’, moving from one of the most developed countries in Asia, to a very small and under developed country without the many facilities offered by a more advanced nation.
Stay tuned and I’ll let you know.
So I arrived in Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia traveling by coach, an experience in itself!
Some of the roads were filled with deep pits and holes and it had been raining so muddy too, however we eventually arrived safely in Phnom Penh in the late evening in October 2014.
Fortunately, after only a short walk I was able to find a hotel for temporary accommodation while looking for a job and a more permanent apartment.
It did not take long to acquire a new position and I started work as a Tutor for a company run by an English owner. This involved some one on one tutoring and some small group work with local companies, again at a fairly low level. I continued working here until I met a guy in a local bar one evening and he told me about a language school run by IDP called ACE (Australian Centre for Education) and that I should apply there.
I suppose I should add a rather funny story (although not so funny for me at the time), one day my boss invited me to meet for lunch this was about 2 hours before my lesson with a Korean guy, very good in English but he wanted to improve even more and learn many of the idioms we have in English as well as converse with a native speaker. Anyway so at lunch my boss ordered some pizza and we had a pleasant time eating and drinking. However, unknown to me was the fact that this was commonly known as a ‘happy pizza’ in other words it was laced with cannabis.
I now had to proceed to my lesson with an executive client who spoke very good English and try to provide a good session. But that was not to be, I found myself feeling very drowsy and unable to concentrate eventually after about 30 to 40 min’s he ended the class. I’m sure he must have realised what had happened, but I put it down to not feeling very well. For me a terrible experience, as I would never drink or take mild drugs like that knowing I had a lesson to do, but quite funny looking back. What a boss right!!
This I did and after an interview, I was accepted to stat in a new branch in an area known as Toul Tom Poung. It was a brand new building with about 7 floors. This was to begin in the New Year January 2015.
All the teachers that started in this branch were new teachers and we had induction training before we started. Very professional and although they did have classes for all ages we were able to stipulate our preferences. So I chose to teach at level 4 and above which was at an intermediate level and with teenagers and adults.
Quick note; IDP is an organization in Australia I believe its government run to encourage foreign students to study in Australian Universities. They are one part of the team that makes up the IELTS exams with the British Council.
I was very please to find this position as it was my first experience of working in a well run and organized school, it also took care of our visa’s and working permits and provided medical insurance after a 6 month probationary period.  We had all the necessary tools and equipment to plan our lessons and a structured curriculum using English course books. So whilst it was still required to make lesson plans they were developed around the lessons from the books, these included audio and video material.
Cambodia Expat Lifestyle
OK, so what about Cambodia, I found it a very nice place not too much traffic compared to other major capital cities, which made it easy to get around, here I did buy a second hand scooter rather than renting as they are very cheap here. Most of the traffic is motorbikes and bicycles not so many cars as the population is still relatively poor and cars here are very heavily taxed, they cost more here than in western countries.
The driving is not so good, they do go through red lights and drive on the wrong side of the road and you have to watch for vehicles coming from all directions, but they tend to drive quite slow, so just be careful.
About the traffic police if they stop you there will be a fine, even if you have done nothing wrong, but if you keep your eyes open they are avoidable and if you keep to the outside lane a go faster it’s difficult for them to stop you. It’s also acceptable here to ignore the police if they are flagging you down, they never pursue you.
I bought my scooter and never had a license in Cambodia, didn’t have any insurance. The only expenses were the petrol, about $1 a litre and any repairs, punctures did occur quite frequently but they have many places to repair and not very expensive.
Cuisine in Cambodia mostly revolves around rice and noodles just like all the other Asian countries, meals could be bought at local restaurants for around a dollar, a can of beer about 70 cents in a store for the local brew or if in a bar $1.50 to $2. That’s if you wish to be on the economy side. But like Thailand being the capital city they have many different kinds of foods including, hamburgers, chips, Kebabs, Chinese, KFC and as in Thailand some western owners of bars and restaurants.
Of course if you venture into the small towns and villages you can only find the local foods.
Things to do, they had some small shopping malls and also one big AON mall that had just been built, with cinema that catered for blockbuster movies.
I also found a gym not as modern as the one in Thailand and no air conditioning which actually I prefer. But it had all the weights and equipment for me to work out a circuit for myself and it was only a dollar per visit.
Cambodia has many holidays, so the students and the school closed quite a bit and I decided to travel to the beach at Sihanouk about a 4 hour mini bus ride from Phnom Penh during any of the longer holidays. It was here that I noticed the scuba diving schools and being an adventurous person. I began by having an introductory course at a PADI diving school close to the beach at Sihanouk. After getting into the diving, I made my mind up to complete my open water certificate, this entailed buying some books and doing some study as well as the diving.
The centre I used had a place on an island, so we went by boat to this Island known as Koh Rong Sanloem and although there were some other small resorts it was almost a deserted beach, especially when it was out of the main season for tourists. However, on the other side of the Island, there were larger resorts and I occasionally took a walk over the hill to the other side, quite a steep climb and took about 30 to 40 min's, through a dense overgrown forest and a few streams to cross quite a nice little hike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got hooked on diving and went on to complete my advanced diving and also a rescue and first aid course. I thought about becoming an instructor but in the end decided against it.
I was also able to get involved with the school 5-a-side football team, we went to a local venue and played against the local teams, in my first 6 month contract we had two young guys teaching with us who were quite good footballers. So when the school had a 5-a-side competition we had a good team, even at 58, I was able to play in the side and we managed to win the competition on penalties in the final.  Not bad for an old geezer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the cost of living, a bit less than Thailand especially for accommodation, although I have to say, I was very blessed to find a 3 bedroom two floor apartment fully furnished, for $200 a month. Most of the rented apartments were more in the region of $250 to $300 depending on what kind of facilities you were after, Oh! and with a balcony.
Food to buy in the markets are cheap and varied you can get most vegetables that you might be used to, as well as many you have not seen before in your home country, unless you’re from another Asian country of course.

Tahmasp
Kothed Rotheth. Tamazi - Tamazi brings his religious revelations to all the areas surrounding him in Tapaipe, which earn him notoriety in the face of other religions and leaders. No serious action against him is taken, but the religion is outlawed, and serves as a mystery cult for many years. Eventually, word gets out that his followers are actively performing pilgrimages to the holy spot of First Revelation, and Tamazi is imprisioned. Only then does anyone realize the vastness of his secret empire, which spans from Padi to Drepa to Epata, even some eastern parts of Troe. Hundreds of Deneians (from the Epatan pronunciation of Tamazi) converge to argue his release. The riots become battles, drawing more followers to the cause, creating larger scale battles, making Tamazi into a mythic figure.  Eventually, Tamazi’s followers topple the current government and release him. They are able to live in peace as they rebuild the city (named Huscilus) under his guidance, but Tamazi dies three years later at 64 in the year 28. For some time, a mix of citizens from all these separate countries grow farther apart. Most Troe are immediately bullied into leaving, as they are known as a conquering people, not as a religious one. Many Trebori are called back home, knowing that Troe will soon go to war with their country, and now that their leader is dead they have no ties to this place. The Trebori that stay generally group with the Epata and half the Tapaiptians, who remain devout Deneians. The other half of the Tapaipatians, and many Padi, become Kotheds, who deitize Tamazi. These two split sects of the new religion called by the Troe and other non-practitioners as TAHMASP. In Trebori, Epata, Taipaipe; Deneians – The Deneians are devout, strict, and are constantly debating amongst one another about how the religion must be practiced. They actually have many sects, many of which are incredibly complicated and the differences between them become very minute. It is the type of group which encourages leadership, and orderly life and strong convictions, but also secrecy, wealth, power, and to some extent disrespect other religions, even to look down on others who don’t believe in their particular branch of faith – even Kotheds who are grouped with them under the label ‘Tamashp’. There are many rules in the Deneian religion (some sects are much less strict than others), such as being unable to display images of Kothed Rotheth, which consequently makes talisman and other forms of representative religion popular among Deneians.
In Taipaipe, Padi; Kotheds – Kotheds are peace-loving people who have given up worldly possessions to devout themselves to finding similar experiences to Tamazi, believing that one can become holy/divine by doing so. They are often seen as jolly, as the most famous Kotheds are portrayed as laughing when they find Tamazi or become holy – the idea being that to do so will fill one with a deific joy.                              Day of Enlightenment
Day of Enlightenment: celebrating the day tamazi was enlightened. Also the New Year.
Victory Month Arrival of the Denians: celebrates the small group of devout followers who began to argue for Tamazi’s release. This is the beginning of the ‘holiday season’ where practitioners celebrate Tamazi overcoming adversity to spread his teachings. It is an entire month with celebrations based on the historical events leading to Tamazi founding Huscilus. Historically this took slightly more than a month and some devout Deneians still practice it with historical accuracy.
Day freed from prison: celebrates the day tamazi was freed from prison. It marks the middle of the holiday season, although historically he was freed much closer to the end of the month.
Day of victory over old Taipepre: Celebrates the end of the original ruling family in Taipepre. Celebrated between Freed from Prison and founding of Huscilus.
Founding of Huscilus: celebrates the founding of Huscilus by Tamazi and his followers. The largest celebration is this day because it is the end of the month, though it would not be the most holy day.
Kothed Holidays; Tamazi’s Birth and Coming of Age Day
Birthday: celebrates the day tamazi was born, also celebrates his parents.

Tima Deryan
She does not fit into the clichés that many people in the West have of Arab women. Fatima, called Tima, Deryan does not stand in the shadow of a man. She is cosmopolitan, self-confident and independent. She has founded a company in Dubai where she lives – and she is a mountaineer: Tima has already scaled five of the “Seven Summits”, the highest mountains of all continents. Mount Everest and Mount Vinson in the Antarctica are still missing from her collection.
On 23 March, the 26-year-old will fly to Nepal to climb the highest mountain on earth. On the trek to Everest Base Camp, Tima will certainly pay special attention to the yaks. In October 2017 on her way to Island Peak, she was attacked by a yak when she had just crossed a bridge over the Dudh Kosi between Phakding and Namche Bazaar. She was flipped over by the yak. The horns hit her at the thigh, Deryan was slightly injured.
Tima, how did you become a mountaineer?
On the summit of Aconcagua (in 2017)
I was born in Kuwait, my family moved to Lebanon when I was two years old and then moved to Dubai when I was nine years old. I‘ve been always into sports in general. During my teenage, I was into bodybuilding and then started bungy jumping by the age of 16. I then started my scuba diving and got my advanced PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) license, then I thought I should also get my skydiving license and I did.
In 2015 I attended a speech by Omar Samra, the first Egyptian man to climb Everest (in 2007) and I was reminded about my goal: I’ve always wanted to climb Everest ever since I was 14. I have visited Nepal five times and flew over Everest twice and I always said I will climb to the top of this mountain one day. So I took the first step to see if I like mountaineering or not and took off to climb Mount Elbrus in Russia. This was when I got hooked and my mountaineering journey started.
How would you describe your character?
I’m am a strong woman both physically and mentally. I love laughing and I enjoy the simple things in life. I‘m a minimalist, so to me it’s all about the experience rather than material. I have two jobs when I’m not on the mountain, one is in finance, the other is my own business which means I work hard for my money.
I‘m a loud person when I’m happy and I try to control it. I would consider myself between both an extrovert and introvert at this stage in life. Mind over matter is what I believe in. A positive, balanced and happy life is what I try to achieve all the time.
On the ladder across a crevasse (on Island Peak)
Which of your qualities do help you the most in the mountains?
Believing that I’m strong, being positive and laughing (especially when the altitude hits me) and of course now that its all about mind over matter which I actually tattooed on my hand as a reminder.
What does mountaineering mean to you today?
I honestly wish mountaineering is my job but this doesn’t work in my world. My dreams are big and I need to earn a lot to be able to achieve them. So now mountaineering for me is a run away from the standard city life and mainstream world. It‘s when I refill all my positive energy and boost my confidence. It‘s when I’m in peace with myself and I push all the limits happily. It‘s when I rebalance my thoughts and mentally heal. Mountaineering is literally my heaven on earth and happy place.
How do you prepare for Everest?
While rock climbing
Given that Everest has been a long time dream of mine, when I decided that I want to do it, I discovered that it takes about two months! As a newbie, I continued climbing for three years until I gained confidence and learned enough to take such a decision.
As for training, I do my strength training from 6am to 7am then I’m off to a long day at work. I come back and do my HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in the evening.
I run ten kilometers one or two times a week, do indoor climbing two, three times a week and I’m always hiking over the weekend.
How do you finance the expedition?
I’m a minimalist, I live with my family so I really do not spend much of what I earn. Everything goes into mountains and trips. As for Everest, it is a launching event for my new company Yalla Cleaning (an online portal for cleaning industry). Part of my initiative is contributing to cleaning Everest, so currently working with the Nepalis on how I can help to bring the trash off the mountain through a system.
South side of Mount Everest
What are your expectations for Everest?
I think anyone wanting to climb a mountain would have the ultimate goal of reaching the top. For Everest, my ultimate goal is definitely reaching the top but I am very well aware that things might go against my expectations. The fact that I have the chance to spend around 50 days on the mountain, be there and live the experience, it is way too beautiful. But to top the cake with the cherry, it’ll be great to come back home with the summit! So I really do not have a lot of expectations besides – expecting the cold, stainless-steel ladders, Khumbu Icefall, crevasses, and the epic basecamp life!
A woman as a mountaineer – there are not many in the male-dominated Arab world. What resistance did you have to overcome?
I always say the Arab world is in a transition phase. It is true that it is male-dominated but women are rising up in all domains. Women in the Middle East are achieving the impossible whether it is in fitness, business, culture, music and entertainment.
Nepal, I’m coming
As I started my mountaineering journey, it was difficult to convince my family to travel alone knowing that I will be disconnected and they might not hear from me for a while. It was very hard for them to accept it but I managed to convince them. Otherwise, I did not really face a lot of difficulties kick-starting my passion.
As for society, I usually have a lot of respect from both men and women when they know what I go through to reach the peak. Just like in any other part of the world, some people think I’m too crazy and my future will be complicated. I don’t really bother explaining instead I climb more and prove them wrong. It’s all about action at the end of the day.
How do Arab men react to your mountain successes, how do Arab women?
Both Arab men and women react in a beautiful way towards my summit successes. It makes me so happy to hear “we are proud of you”. I must say, I do get challenged by some men when it comes to fitness so they can prove a point. I accept it for fun. Whether I lose or win doesn’t matter but I make sure my message goes through which is: Women are strong creatures with a high pain threshold.
Is there also a message that you want to give to Arab women by climbing Everest?
On expedition (to Denali)
Yes. Through my Everest climb I would like to demonstrate that an Arab woman is able to fight all sorts of limitations that society imposes upon her. She can earn her freedom only by action. If she wants something she must work really hard to get it! Being strong does not mean not being feminine enough. Being strong is way more attractive than being “soft”.
Arab women are still going through the phase of being independent and doing anything on there own. Most women still find it difficult to date to depend solely on themselves. So If I can climb Everest and depend on myself on the mountain then they can do anything. All it takes is courage and hard work.
I want Arab women to know that they are beautiful, they are strong and they can conquer the world. But only with the right mindset.
P.S.: By the way, the first Arab woman on Everest was the Palestinian Suzanne Al Houby, who reached the highest point at 8850 meters in spring 2011.

Scuba diving may seem to many as an activity more suited to youngsters but 65-year-old dive instructor Christy Ooi believes that one is never to old to take the plunge. In fact, the sun-kissed and adventure-loving senior believes that scuba diving is a “gentle sport” that’s perfect for seniors who want to keep active without the risk of injury to their joints.
“Each dive lasts for about 45 minutes and divers swim at a leisurely pace. Diving is a low-impact exercise that’s suited to seniors. The only difference is that you are underwater,” he says.
Ooi has been a scuba diving instructor for over three decades and doesn’t plan on hanging up his fins and putting away his wetsuit anytime soon.
“I’ve been diving for 30 years and I’ve lost track of the number of dives I’ve been on. Once you learn how to dive, you never want to leave the water. I’ll continue to dive as long as I can,” says Ooi passionately.
Becoming a dive instructor wasn’t something Ooi dreamed about as a youngster. After this secondary education, he studied drafting and worked for 15 years as a draughtsman in an architectural firm. But he grew bored with his office-bound job. He wanted a change.
Loo (left) and Ooi are fine examples of scuba diving instructors in their 60s.
By then, Ooi had already obtained his scuba diving certification. It was the 1980s and scuba diving was deemed as an expensive hobby for the “elite”.
The water sport was perceived as being a sport for the extremely adventurous, those who liked taking risks. Ooi reckons that he was one of the first few Malaysians to learn scuba diving here.
“I was bored with my mundane and routine job that had me sitting in the office for 15 years. I was looking for some adventure in life. So, with my diving instructor’s certificate, I decided to take a leap of faith … to dive into uncharted waters,” he shares.
The jovial father-of-one went on to obtain his Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certification in 1990 and became a dive instructor. Ooi has absolutely no regrets about leaving his career as a draghtsman.
“Life is all about choices. Though my career switch may have seemed unconventional years ago, I am happier. As a dive instructor, I can dictate my own working hours and lead a less stressful life. Plus, I get to be a beach bum and soak in the sun and have some fun,” jokes Ooi.
It was Ooi’s love for the outdoors that fueled his passion for scuba diving.
“I grew up before the Internet era. As a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors, catching tadpoles in streams and fishing with friends. So, I suppose I signed up for scuba diving because I wanted to reconnect with nature, specifically the underwater world,” explains Ooi who takes his students to the east coast for their dives.
Senior citizens make up a sizeable part of the diving community, partly because divers who started out in the first flush of its popularity 30 to 40 years ago have now aged. – Filepic
According to the Divers Alert Network (DAN), an American non-profit scuba diving and dive safety association, older divers (those over 50 years old) now constitute an increasingly large percentage of the global dive community.
“Two main factors are responsible: divers who took up scuba in the first flush of its popularity 30 to 40 years ago have aged, and second, today’s older generation is typically wealthier and more active than ever before, and is adopting diving as the pastime of their golden years,” says DAN in their webpage.
Once he started diving, there was no turning back for Ooi. Photo: Christy Ooi
According to the association, seniors who started diving in their youth are likely to be safer in the water than many younger divers, because of their experience: they’d be able to deal with a range of problems and scenarios that younger divers may be unfamiliar with.
Still, Ooi advises fellow seniors who want to scuba dive to make sure they are medically and physically fit.
“I have students who are in their 70s and they have never experienced any issues learning how to dive. However, I would advise the elderly to undergo regular health check-ups before signing up for a scuba diving course,” advises Ooi.
As a dive instructor, Ooi too needs to keep himself in shape, not only physically but also mentally.
“I keep up to date by reading articles on diving websites, especially articles on water safety,” says Ooi, who is trained to administer emergency first aid, and is also a rescue diver and divemaster.
Scuba diving also provides seniors citizens with an avenue to socialise, he says.
“Scuba diving is the best way to meet and interact with like-minded people. After each trip, divers always make it a point to gather for food and drinks. Everyone is happy to share their dive stories and adventures and also divulge tips.”
Over the years, Ooi has forged good friendships with many fellow divers. One of them is dive instructor Loo Kit Choong, 63. The two have known each other for four years and have gone on several diving trips together in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Also read: It’s your health, not your age, that matters when scuba diving
Scuba diving allows Loo an opportunity to bond with his sons, Shen Quang left and Jey Quang
Loo considers himself to be a late bloomer when in comes to scuba diving, having taken up the sport only after turning 50. He was inspired to learn to dive after meeting a group of divers in Redang Island, Terengganu.
“Those guys looked so cool in their wetsuits, and it seemed like they were having so much fun in the sea. I decided to follow in their footsteps,” says Loo, a retired sales manager.
Loo was hooked on first dive and has never looked back since.
“Every island has it own beauty and nothing compares to being in pristine waters and appreciating the rich diversity of marine life. I especially love untouched islands like Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Island and Komodo Island, and Sabah’s Pom Pom Island and Mabul Island. Diving is very addictive. One you start, it’s hard to stop,” says Loo, who earned his PADI instructors certification when he was 57.
He too thinks that age shouldn’t be a hindrance to picking up scuba diving.
“Scuba diving is like any other sport. The only difference is it’s underwater and one needs to be able to swim and be confident in the water,” he says.
“Everyone is always happy to share stories of their dive, adventures and diving tips,” says Ooi (right).
Loo has been a part-time diving instructor since 2007. The job, he says, keeps him busy and allows him to earn “extra pocket money”.
“I enjoy organising dive trips, and working with different tour operators on the different islands in the east coast, Sabah and Indonesia. But the best bit is meeting people from all walks of life, especially those who love the outdoors. Plus, I love teaching people not just about diving but also conservation.”
On each of his dive trips, Loo makes it a point to do sea and beach clean ups.
“I can’t stand seeing thrash strewn in the ocean. Besides, it’s our diving playground and so we must try to keep it pristine for the others to enjoy,” says Loo.
As much as he loves diving, Loo confesses that best trips are the ones he goes on with his sons, Loo Shen Quang, 33 and Loo Jey Quang, 27.
“My sons have busy work schedules and hardly have any free time. During these trips, we get to relax and enjoy each other’s company. We get to strengthen the family bond too.”
Loo reckons that more seniors should “step outside the confines of homes”, reconnect with nature and get active.
“People are too caught up with social media. Rather than be in the virtual world, explore the outdoors. Reconnect with nature through activities like hiking and swimming. It’s a great form of exercise to keep healthy.”
