Ressourcement and the Philokalia - “The Best Belongs to Everyone"
We are perhaps familiar these days with the term ressourcement as embodying the fundamental call of the Second Vatican Council to “return to the sources” (the scriptures and the Fathers of the Church) that we might be renewed in our understanding and practice of the faith. It is interesting to note that the emergence of the Philokalia in the 18th century was part of another far reaching and radical program of ressourcement within Orthodox Christianity. St. Nikodimos and St. Makarios, the compilers of the writings of the Philokalia, were a part of what is called the Kollyvades movement on Mount Athos that according to Kallistos Ware, Bishop of Diokleia, had three primary features. The first centered on establishing a more faithful observance of the liturgical traditions and practices of the Church, e.g., celebrating Sunday as the day of the Lord Resurrection, not to be supplanted by any other memorial service and, more importantly, Ware notes, advocating the frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist. The second feature is a patristic renaissance. It is here that the Kollyvades initiated an ambitious program of publication which included the Philokalia. Finally, Ware states, they emphasized above all the importance of the patristic teachings on Hesychasm which they believed was the “living heart of the Philokalia” and “gives to its varied contents a single unity.”
Ware states:
“Such, then, is the cultural context of the Philokalia. It forms part - a fundamental and primary part - of the Patristic ressourcement that the Kollyvades sought to promote. The Kollyvades looked upon the Fathers, not simply as an archeological relic from the distant past, but as a living guide for contemporary Christians. They therefore hoped that the Philokalia would not gather dust on the shelves of scholars, but that it would alter people’s lives. They meant it to have a supremely practical purpose. In this connection it is significant that St. Nikodimos and St. Makarios intended the Philokalia to be a book not just for monks but for the laity, not just for specialists but for all Christians. . . .In particular, St. Nikodimos maintains, the Pauline injunction, ‘Pray without ceasing‘ is intended not just for hermits in caves and on mountain-tops but for married Christians with responsibilities for a family, for farmers, merchants and lawyers, even for kings and courtiers living in palaces.‘ It is a universal command. The best belongs to everyone.”
Quotes from, “The inner unity of the Philokalia and its influence in East and West” by Kallistos Ware. Edit. Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, Athens 2004

Hello, dear April readers! Our poetry month begins with Brenda Shaughnessy, whose new collection celebrates female artists, lovers, friends, and mentors—the relationships between women that invite creativity and self-belief, and illuminate a path forward. The poet’s long-ago roommate Tanya, for whom the book is named (“magical like all girls—have you ever met an ordinary one?”), was a catalyst in her young life; throughout this month, we’ll take note, where we can, of the touchstone relationships that inspire and accompany our poets.
Here, the fourth section from Shaughnessy’s multi-part poem “Coursework” honors the spark lit by her influential teacher of literature, Helene Moglen. This professor, she realizes, “would lead me to that place books always promised…a mix of judgment and soul, of egos and logos and trust / that everything that happened in books happened inside us.”
from Coursework
Didn’t everything become, once you said it out loud?
A student in our class once said, out loud: “I left the theater after a movie and caught a glimpse of someone     in the mirror I didn’t recognize as myself.”
And, Helene, you said in reply: “yes, you look at a sunset and find that     you are weeping.”
It was a suddenly recurring moment we were all stunned to recognize
that it was only at this moment we recognized all the ways we did not     recognize ourselves
until that moment, when we knew we knew we saw ourselves
and knew we knew we were each other.
And hidden in this clarity was our new knowledge that emotions were     sensory,
that is: emotions had a way in and out of the body through senses,
and that reading cracked our glass covering and fit the tip
to our senses through which our bodies learned to read.
That my inner feelings and thoughts could be touched, contacted,     radioed, by the outside world
and that I could transmit my own inner reality to the outside world if I     made a material, sensory object to carry them out—
writing, art, music—those were the ways, the work, the course of the     vessels.
I had to know how that work worked how that way was made so I could learn to make it myself.
And reading with Helene was how I would begin or continue to go deeper, serious, way out of my depth.
I became a writer by becoming a reader—this fact lifted confusion clear out of the page.
. .

Are there any art residencies in Greece?
There are! I would suggest straight up googling artist residencies in greece if you want to find any, as i am not aware of any like... central hub for them. The Onassis AiR residency is the only current one i have looked into a bit more thoroughly (but chickened out of applying for this year because i felt my project pitch was lacking) and it's a very good one, as far as i can tell, and this specific foundation that hosts it is generally doing a lot of important work promoting artists and stuff. But I'm sure there are more out there if you look into it.

The power of words can rebuild lives
Tumblr media
Back in 2019, the UK-based AMAR International Charitable Foundation published these photographs from their school for orphans in Basra, Iraq. Each image demonstrates how AMAR is making positive changes to the lives of Iraqi children, through the power of the written word.
As Hussein Al-alak explains, AMAR's school for orphans was built in 2016 and up to 30% of the children who attend have lost both parents to war or disease. The school has modern facilities and provides a broad curriculum, so children get the best start in life. One of their main focuses is on reading.
The AMAR Foundation builds and rehabilitates educational facilities across Iraq, ensuring access to safe, clean classrooms and provides additional infrastructure, so the overall experience for children is conducive to successful learning.
According to the National Literary Trust and Manchester City Council, "Every community faces different challenges and we need local solutions." For example, "reading for 10 minutes every day can help you relax, learn and feel good."
By reading, we improve our literacy levels, increase educational achievements and future employment skills, along with improving our own health and social skills. As Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once stated: “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. A love of books is the best of all.”
From Manchester to Iraq - building a global village in education
AMAR is rebuilding the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in Iraq. With Manchester being home to almost 20,000 Iraqi ex-patriates – many of whom escaped from the Government of Saddam Hussain – it’s the natural choice to be one of the charity’s first UK appeals centres.
The most recent Iraqi refugees are following in the footsteps of literary giants, such as poet Siegfried Sassoon, whose family arrived in Manchester from Basra in 1858. The British-Lebanese historian Albert Hourani, was also born in Manchester in 1915. His book, A History of the Arab Peoples, was described by Harvard University Press as being "an instant classic upon publication".
Throughout the 1980's and 1990's, Iraq's refugee children were keen visitors to school libraries across the city. Their parents saw it as a means of improving the youngsters’ spoken and written English, thus helping them to integrate into British daily life.
In 2018, Iraqi students at the University of Manchester collected around 1.000 books as part of the international efforts to re-stock the University of Mosul, which was destroyed while the city was under the occupation of Islamic State.
AMAR was founded in 1991 and is chaired by Baroness (Emma) Nicholson of Winterbourne. From 1923-1940, David Lindsay - the 27th Earl of Crawford and the grandfather of Baroness Nicholson - was also chancellor of the University of Manchester.

This brings us to today's topic which is Harry Potter and it came up a lot and people want to do the program to try and get into it to figure out what exactly happened and who's using it and what they're using it for. It is a mystery they spotted Giants they've seen the clan and giant form and they can't tell who's controlling them or what. And they're going ahead with it and they're starting to construct the airfoil system supposedly for skydiving tourism and they're opening part of the castle for tourism. I'm proud to say it's working it's necessary from all around and people are going to start to go there and start to make it work more and Tommy fabino's playing along saying he needs to know and we know if this if he's done it or not and it's moving along
