Hii, if it's not too much trouble, can I be set up with someone from Haikyuu?
absolutely!!!
okay, so the Dateko gang was knocking on my door tonight, wondering when it would be their turn to date. Whose card was drawn tonight?
Tumblr media
His name is Taro Onagawa and while he seems rather quiet and disappears behind the broad backs of quiet Aone or loudmouthed Futakuchi, he's a sweetheart who wants to spend his time with you.
Since his favorite food are cup noodles, he's hoping you'd entertain his idea of a perfect date: taste-testing your way through all kinds of cup noodles, while watching a good movie. If you want to do something more loud and active, Futakuchi is working at this dinner, so why not go there for Dinner and annoy the hell out of his former teammate.
After all, your team with him will be quiet and comfortable, full of jokes and interesting conversation. He's ready to follow your preferences and he really wants to get to know you more and more.
So, what do you say?
Will you accept?

futakuchi: im bringing you milk tea bc you deserve it and i adore you so fu-
“Who ya texting?”
Futakuchi nearly throws his phone and his heart, the shock being so overwhelming he nearly forgets where the hell he is and what the hell he was doing. But seeing Onegawa rips him back to reality. It’s a good thing too — he almost sent something really dumb.
“Just Y/N,” he answers cooly, locking his phone and smoothly sliding it in his pocket. “Got nothin’ else to do besides bother me?”
Onegawa cocks his head with a smirk. “What makes you say that? You’re not that great to be around.
At that, Futakuchi laughs but he doesn’t press the matter. He doesn’t need Onegawa to tell him what he already knows but he really does love playing himself up sometimes.
Like when he shows up to your house with to bottles of warm milk tea from your favorite tea house and his laptop in his bag, he does much of what you were expecting.
“Again? You know we can just watch on my TV’s Crunchyroll,” you sigh, taking a bottle from him.
“Ch... Y/N, we both know my laptop is much better than that. Can I get a ‘thank you,’” he chides. Like a spoiled child, he pats you on the head when you mutter out a sarcastic thanks over your drink.
And just like he wants, you both are snuggled up on your bed with his arm around you and the laptop on both your laps. He wouldn’t admit that to you though — you both just started dating.
“This show is insanely good. I’m so glad we started watching this,” you comment toward the end of the new episode.
“I know right,” he asks rhetorically, “I think it’s almost as good as you and me.”
You snort at his comment and give him a soft nudge with your elbow.
The next few dates were similar — not the milk tea and the anime binging. No, it’s the comments from Futakuchi.
“They’re not staring because you spilled water on your shirt, they’re staring because I’m just insanely attractive. I promise,” he reassured once while covering your white shirt with his napkin at the dinner table.
“Y/N’s way too good to be around you guys,” he told the team one day, “and you guys kill my vibe so much she’d probably start pity dating me after meeting you.” It was something you overheard while waiting outside for Futakuchi because you told him you were too shy to meet everyone just yet. You didn’t miss the insults and disappointed comments that came after.
“I’m glad we met. I think I made your life a lot better... And mine too...” The last sentence was almost a whisper that night, and if you were any sleepier you would’ve missed it. But considering you had just spilled out all your past trauma and how much better you’ve been since getting close to Futakuchi, you were listening intently to anything that he had to say at 4AM.
Another Crunchyroll date or two, maybe a night out for phở, and definitely after you guys exchanged late-night, sleep-endorsed promises to be together forever — all of that passed by before you realized what exactly Futakuchi’s deal was. And when you put it all together, you realized you wanted more than dates. Every night could be spent with Crunchyroll on his fancy-shmancy laptop with phở on trays right before a late-night talk in your shared bed if you settle down together.
And it’s clear to see he wants that too.
“Do you think my parents will let me have the car for freshman year?” he asks softly, a hand stroking the back of your head while some random show on Netflix plays in the background. His attention is on you and you only, the tone of his voice as serious as usual but... You know there’s something else there.
“I thought your college didn’t allow freshmen to have cars unless they’re commuting,” you comment with furrowed brows.
His hand pauses and you can tell he’s stopped breathing by how your head stops rising and falling on his chest.
“What’s wrong?” you ask immediately and sit up to look at him.
He looks away just as fast, not able to meet your eyes while he thinks of the best way to say what he wants. It’s not that he doesn’t know what to say, but that he has so much he wants to tell you. Things he never said or never sent in the past that he’s been hiding.
“Well,” he clears his throat and looks at you, “I wanted to be able to visit you on weekends and stuff.”
“Oh. I mean, they probably will let you if you explain that... Maybe mention you want a job or something too so you can convince them more.”
You sound just like him. Coming up with a solution and avoiding what he’s really saying. Maybe it’s because you’ve been doing it for years now that you stopped calling him out on things he left unsaid. When you started dating freshman year of high school, he would get hotly flustered at any reading between the lines —  even if you both thought it. Now, senior year of high school, you spare him the words and just respond with something simple. Something that lets him take his time and express himself in other ways.
He loves that about you — he loves you. But right now, he wants you to read his lips and pluck the words right out of the sky like you used to because he’s about to say something he reg-
“I wanna spend the rest of my life with you. Seriously. I don’t — don’t give me that look please you look insanely cute — I don’t want to think about being apart from you and us growing distant. I want us to spend lots of time together, y’know?” He clips himself short, not wanting to get too into it. This isn’t some romance novel — this is you. You’re not a fiction book, you’re the best reality he could’ve asked for and he doesn’t want this book to end no matter how many chapters there are.
He’d read the glimmers in your eyes, plagiarize the words from your lips, write sonnets on your body for eternities if it were possible.
“I-” you breathe a laugh, “I know what you mean. But it’s just the car, yeah?”
Were you keeping things minimal with him because it was easier for you too?
“No.”
“No...”
You both just look at each other, probably attempting to transmit what you really want to tell him and vice versa. Just look. There’s more he wants to do — greet your pliant lips in a kiss sweeter than milk tea or something like that — but he needs to say what he hasn’t for years.
“I’m in love with you.”
“I love you too.”
“No, no, Y/N, listen-” the hand that was stroking your hair tugs it slightly now, causing a spark to shoot through you while he angles your face closer to him. “I love you but I’m also in love with you. They’re different. One is like... I can say it to anyone. But the other I can’t tell anyone else except you. And I wanted to say it for a while but I guess I was waiting for the right moment.”
Your breath already hitched at the seemingly innocent and soft hand in your hair and now you’re so close that you’re breathing his air. Breathing his words right in and knowing exactly what he’s telling you but you don’t know how to respond. You’ve forgotten how to respond — he’s never been this candid about his feelings for you.
But you love it.
So yes, maybe you kept it minimal for yourself too. Maybe that was why you both got along and lasted so long despite his “narcissism.” You knew deep down what he was really like.
You know deep down you were in love with him too. Always have been, and always will be.
