Falmouth Resident Proposes Town-Wide Fiber Optic Network
By David Isenberg
The article below appeared in The Falmouth Enterprise on Friday, April 12, 2019. It’s authored by Enterprise reporter Elianna Spitzer.
The article describes an initiative by Courtney Bird to build town-wide residential high-speed Internet access service in Falmouth as a superior alternative to Comcast’s Xfinity and Verizon’s DSL. Such a service would be faster, more reliable, more affordable and better-engineered than Verizon or Comcast. Plus it would be locally owned and controlled. Brooks Bartlett of Falmouth’s EDIC (Economic Development Industrial Corporation) and I are helping Courtney.
We aim to have a public meeting in May or June to provide information to a wider audience and build support for the project.
Courtney Bird of Sippewissett Road advocated for a Falmouth-wide fiber optic network before the Falmouth Economic Development and Industrial Corporation on Tuesday, April 9.
Fiber optic cables are bundles of optical fibers—strips of glass or plastic that are thinner than a strand of human hair. Information can travel across these fibers using the power of light. Fiber optic Internet cables are widely considered to be faster and more reliable than copper cables.
OpenCape, a nonprofit technology company in Barnstable Village, operates a fiber optic network that connects municipal buildings, schools and some businesses in Falmouth. If the EDIC moves forward with its plans, OpenCape will extend the network to businesses on Main Street.
Mr. Bird envisions a much larger expansion and the creation of a municipal network. With Brooks Bartlett of the EDIC and David Isenberg of Sumner Street, Woods Hole, Mr. Bird is building support for the “last-mile” of fiber optics.
The plans are not specific. Mr. Bird wants to develop a base of support for a municipally owned fiber optic network before considering the many options for management and design.
He believes that the town would economically benefit from the project, although the initial cost of laying cables throughout Falmouth would be high. “When you have that kind of thing, all of a sudden industries come in that weren’t there before,” he said.
Mr. Bird has discussed figures with Mr. Isenberg, who worked as an expert advisor for the Federal Communications Commission to develop a national broadband initiative. Mr. Isenberg offered some abstract figures that Mr. Bird presented to the EDIC.
“There are approximately 21,000 single-family homes, businesses, condominiums, multi-family houses, I could bore you with the breakdowns, but that’s a sizable population to connect. There are 440 miles of road in the town. That includes state roads, private roads and town-owned roads over which the fiber optic cable would have to be run. Then to connect them up to the house and every unit at an average of 100 feet, you’d end up with about 850 miles of fiber optic cable that has to be installed,” Mr. Bird explained.
He added that Mr. Isenberg suggested the cost, on average, would be approximately $3,000 per unit. “To get a sense of the scope of this, you’re looking at a cost to build out fiber optic cable to every home and every business in this town... somewhere between $30 and $60 million.” EDIC chairman Susan L. Moran pointed out that the estimate does not include operational costs.
Mr. Bird noted that although the sticker price was shocking, he estimated that it could be paid off in four to six years. “I figure at an average of, say, $50 per unit times 20,000... that’s $12 million-plus a year conservatively in terms of income,” he said.

Opinions on the crypto alias format? Would you like to receive money using “@username.domain.com” or “username$domain.com”?
[ad_1]
OpenCAP is a simple protocol that will allow all crypto users to receive money via an alias like “@lane.ogdolo.com” and that payment will actually go to the associated currency and address. It will bring more convenience to the peer-to-peer side of crypto. The protocol development coming along quite well, and a couple different wallets are helping so they can integrate.
