One thing I like about Alias is how Bendis goes out of his way to posit that anti-mutant prejudice isn't something that replaced in-universe -isms, it's instead an additional one that's comorbid with the conventional stuff. The small town Jessica investigates is a hotbed of anti-mutant sentiment but they're regular racists on top of that. The kid who skipped town didn't do it because she's a mutant, she did it because she's gay and that's an equally rough spot to be in. The archetypical racist uncle in this universe is racist and homophobic and anti-mutant, all of those are casually brought up as part of the same conceptual cluster. Bendis was very good at casually making something feel like our world but a little to the left- actually making the Marvel U earn the "world outside your window" sobriquet.
