Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique that captures micrometer-resolution, two- and three-dimensional images from optical scattering media using low-coherence light (e.g., biological tissue). It is used in medical imaging and nondestructive testing in the industrial sector (NDT). Optical coherence tomography is based on low-coherence interferometry, with near-infrared light being used in most cases. The use of light with a relatively long wavelength allows it to penetrate the scattering medium. Another optical technique, confocal microscopy, typically penetrates the sample less deeply but with higher resolution.
The prevalence of eye disorders and their impact on the population has been reported all over the world. For example, according to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics from 2019, approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide suffered from vision impairment or blindness in 2016, with 1 billion cases of blindness preventable. 1 billion people have vision impairment or blindness as a result of uncorrected refractive error (123.7 million), cataract (65.2 million), glaucoma (6.9 million), corneal opacities (4.2 million), diabetic retinopathy (3 million), and trachoma (2 million), as well as near vision impairment as a result of uncorrected presbyopia (826 million).
