How To Edit The WordPress Header | WP Learning Lab
The WordPress header is one of those place where a lot of important things happen. Scripts are called, integrations are set up and validated, stylesheets are imported, and so on.
Usually, leaving the header.php file alone is the best plan, but sometimes you have to make additions or changes.
Before you do, keep in mind that if you are editing the header.php file of the main theme, then updates to that theme can cause your changes to be overwritten.

Once you have the header.php file there we can get to work.
If you’ve followed the tutorials above you can now dive into header file and started editing.
If you didn’t create a child theme, then there are a couple ways to find and edit the header.php file.
First, when in your WordPress dashboard you can click on the Appearance menu and then Editor. On the right side of the page you will the list of files in the theme. One of them will be called header.php. Click on that file and it open it so you can edit the WordPress header.
Or you can go through the file manager in your cPanel account. Once in the file manager navigate to wp-content/themes/YOURTHEME. The header.php file is normally in the root of a themes directory.
You can also connect via FTP to make edits to files.
Now that you’ve found the header.php it goes without saying that you need to be careful. One wrong move in a PHP file and your whole site will go down until you fix the problem.
So only edit the WordPress header if you are comfortable with PHP.

The only difference is if you do it automatically then some widgets will be added to your WordPress dashboard.
I prefer to see traffic data in Google Analytics directly, so I never use the dashboard widgets.
To activate it automatically, simply click on the button and follow the steps.
To activate it manually, simply click on that button and enter the UA code of your website property.
Once you have that, you can save it and you’re done. That’s the only required step. There are a bunch of options that you can change however. Here’s a rundown of the options.
Tracking Settings
Anonymize IP Addresses By selecting “Yes”, This tells Google Analytics to anonymize the information sent by the tracker objects by removing the last octet of the IP address prior to its storage. Note that this will slightly reduce the accuracy of geographic reporting.
Track all logged in WordPress users Selecting “no” to this option will prevent logged in WordPress users from showing up on your Google Analytics reports. This setting will prevent yourself or other users from showing up in your Analytics reports. Use the next setting to determine what user groups to exclude.
User roles to not track Specifies the user roles to not include in your WordPress Analytics report. If a user is logged into WordPress with one of these roles, they will not show up in your Analytics report.
Method to prevent tracking Selecting the “Remove” option will physically remove the tracking code from logged in users. Selecting the “Use ‘admin’ variable” option will assign a variable called ‘admin’ to logged in users. This option will allow Google Analytics’ site overlay feature to work, but you will have to manually configure Google Analytics to exclude tracking from pageviews with the ‘admin’ variable.
Enable Remarketing, Demographics and Interests reports: In order to use remarketing, please make sure you complete this checklist from Google. To use remarketing, Edit permission is required
Link Tracking Settings
Outbound link tracking Disabling this option will turn off the tracking of outbound links. It’s recommended not to disable this option unless you’re a privacy advocate (now why would you be using Google Analytics in the first place?) or it’s causing some kind of weird issue.
Event tracking Enabling this option will treat outbound links and downloads as events instead of pageviews. Since the introduction of event tracking in Analytics, this is the recommended way to track these types of actions. Only disable this option if you must use the old pageview tracking method.
Enhanced Link Attribution You can tag your pages to implement an enhanced link-tracking functionality by enabling this option.
Download extensions to track Enter any extensions of files you would like to be tracked as a download. For example to track all MP3s and PDFs enter mp3,pdf. Outbound link tracking must be enabled for downloads to be tracked.
Prefix download links with Enter a name for the section tracked download links will appear under. This option has no effect if event tracking is enabled.
Google Adsense ID Enter your Google Adsense ID assigned by Google Analytics in this box. This enables Analytics tracking of Adsense information if your Adsense and Analytics accounts are linked.
