February 2014 | Volume 2 | Issue 1 Some highlights from this issue: * Can cell phones transform the role of CHWs in the health system? * Can the levonorgestrel intrauterine system be successfully introduced through mobile outreach in sub-Saharan Africa? * How can we improve malaria in pregnancy programs? * Can non-physicians safely perform adult medical male circumcision? * How did Marie Stopes International scale up delivery of contraceptive implants in sub-Saharan Africa? * What was the impact on the health system of a meningococcal vaccine campaign? [ http://www.ghspjournal.org/content/2/1/1.full ] Mobile phones can be transformative for community health workers (CHWs) in enhancing their influence and status and helping to solve practical problems. Challenges remain in the areas of: (1) commodities; (2) quality assurance; (3) monitoring and evaluation; and (4) financing. " November 2013 | Volume 1 | Issue 3 * Should PEPFAR focus on a broader range of priority health needs? * How will routine immunization programs ultimately be successful? * Can community health workers safely and effectively provide injectables in Africa? * Should pregnancy tests be offered to reduce denial of family planning services? * What is causing obesity in rural Tanzania? EDITORIALS Fulfilling the PEPFAR mandate: A more equitable use of PEPFAR resources across global health [ http://dx.doi.org/10.9745/GHSP-D-13-00137 ] As PEPFAR moves beyond its “emergency stage,” it should now help support a more sustainable development mode, including an equitable platform for meeting a broad range of priority health needs, while continuing to pursue the goal of an AIDS-free generation. Coverage levels are poor in some countries and have stagnated in others, while addition of new vaccines is an additional stressor. We need to strengthen: (1) policy processes, (2) monitoring and evaluation, (3) human resources, (4) regular delivery and supply systems, (5) local political commitment and ownership, (6) involvement of civil society and communities, and (7) sustainable financing. Rebalancing immunization direction and investment is needed. We also found a fivefold increase in contraceptive uptake—a finding that builds on evidence from other countries for supportive policy change. Intensive relief efforts in nutrition as well as synergies and improvements in various sectors before and after the earthquake were likely contributing factors.
