Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Song Book (1959)

I love him. Anyways.

Today I was having a shit day. My whole body just felt off. And after 6 hours, this album helped ground me enough to not feel super anxious. His interpretation of the music is both really subtle and very bold. While on one hand he takes these slow ballads and completely reshapes them to his own voice, he also plays in such a way that the compositional voice of Gershwin comes out very clearly and transparently. The faster swing charts are exactly the same, just— faster.

Not a single song on this album disappoints. In the chaos of life, this music is calming. It is kinda perfect.

In the following week, alongside Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen he’d produce The Jazz Soul Of Oscar Peterson, Oscar Peterson Plays The Harry Warren And Vincent Youmans Song Books, Oscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Song Book, Oscar Peterson Plays The Jerome Kern Songbook, Oscar Peterson Plays The Richard Rodgers Song Book, Oscar Peterson Plays The George Gershwin Song Book and Oscar Peterson Plays The Duke Ellington Songbook.

I’ve had an upsetting day yesterday, and, for some reason, Oh Lady Be Good has acted like balm on my soul, soothing my nerves, and relieving my anxiety. I’ve listened to a few different versions of it, and perhaps, as often, Oscar Peterson’s, smooth and harmonious, is my favorite.
