High-Performance Fiber Optic Cables for the FTTH Access Network Application
With the continuous development of FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) network construction, there will be more and more new varieties of fiber optic cables for the FTTH access network application. This article will discuss the three types of fiber optic cables for FTTH in detail.
Tumblr media
Fiber Optic Cables for FTTH Access Network
FTTH is an access network architecture that allows deploying xPON technology to provide high speeds of Internet access downstream (from the network to the end-user) and upstream (from the user to the network) over optical fiber from the operator’s switching equipment to an individual home. The main fiber optic cables implemented to build up the FTTH access network are the FTTH feeder cable, FTTH distribution cable, and FTTH drop cable.
Tumblr media
FTTH Feeder Cable
FTTH feeder cable, such as stranded loose tube light-armored cable connects the central office/hut to the fiber distribution hub (FDH). It is ideal for duct and aerial installations. This cable has good mechanical and temperature performance, high hydrolysis resistance, high strength loose tube, good crush resistance and flexibility, high tensile strength ensured by steel wire, and good moisture-proof ensured by PSP (steel tape).
Stranded loose tube light-armored cable construction is that 250um fibers are positioned in a loose tube which is made of high modulus plastic and filled with a water-resistant filling compound; A steel wire, sometimes sheathed with polyethylene (PE) for cable with high fiber count, locates in the center of core as a metallic strength member; Tubes are stranded around the strength member into a compact and circular cable core; The PSP is longitudinally applied over the cable core which is filled with the filling compound to protect it from water ingress; The cable is completed with a PE sheath.
Tumblr media
FTTH Distribution Cable
FTTH distribution cable connects the FDH to the fiber access termination (FAT). FTTH distribution cable, such as indoor distribution cable uses φ900um tight buffer fibers as an optical communication medium and aramid yarn strength member. It is compliant with a PVC or LSZH jacket. Generally, FTTH distribution cable is available in fiber counts ranging from 2 to 144 fibers. It has excellent stripping performance of tight buffer fiber, good tensile strength, and small size. FTTH distribution cable is used in indoor /outdoor and backbone cable distribution in building applications.
Tumblr media
FTTH Drop Cable
FTTH drop cable is used between the fiber terminal and the building or home. It is ideal for aerial, direct buried, and ducted installations. FTTH drop cable has good crush resistance ensured by parallel strength member, good tensile strength ensured by single steel wire, low smoke, small diameter, zero halogen sheath, simple structure, lightweight, and high practicability.
FTTH drop cable construction is that the optical fiber unit is positioned in the center. Two parallel steel wire strength members are placed at the two sides; A steel wire as the additional strength member is also applied. The cable is completed with an LSZH sheath.
Tumblr media
Things to Consider When Choosing Fiber Optic Cables for FTTH Access Network
When choosing the three fiber optic cables for the FTTH access network, there are some general elements that you should pay attention to that influence the method of cable deployment.
Type of FTTH Architecture: The FTTH architecture implemented will influence the data rate and the optical power budget, which will affect the choice of fiber optic cable for the FTTH access network.
Fiber Type of Existing Network: If an existing network is expanded, you must add hardware that can integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure.
Installation Environment: No matter the indoor or outdoor applications, there are always different environments where the cable will be installed. For instance, in rugged spaces where your cable may suffer damage, such as basements or in conduits sharing space with electrical or other wirings, you may choose a rugged sheathed cable that is flexible and crush resistant.
Conclusion
FTTH allows a fiber optic cable to be laid from the provider’s equipment directly to the user’s home. Choosing the correct fiber optic cables for FTTH access networks will directly affect network reliability, operational flexibility, and the economics of FTTH deployment.

What Is Fiber Optic Cable?
Optical fiber cable is a type of communication cable. It uses one or more optical fibers in a protective covering to transmit information. We can use optical fiber cables alone or in groups to meet specific performance requirements.
Fiber cables are mainly composed of optical fibers (glass fibers as thin as hair), plastic protective sleeves, and plastic sheath. There are no metals such as gold, silver, copper, aluminum, etc. inside the cable, and it generally has no recycling value.
Basic Structure
Fiber Optic Cable Types
1. According to different transmission performance, distance, and purpose, optical fiber cables can be divided into end user fiber cable, local telephone cable, long distance cable, and underwater fiber optic cable.
2. According to the types of optical fibers used, they can be divided into single mode fiber optic cable and multimode fiber optic cable.
3. According to the number of fiber cores inside, it can be divided into single core optical cable, dual core fiber cable, multi-fiber cable, etc.
4. According to the different configuration methods of reinforcement components, optical cables can be divided into central reinforcement optical cables, dispersed reinforcement optical cables, protective layer reinforcement optical cables, and comprehensive outer protective layer optical cables.
5. According to the different transmission conductor and medium conditions, optical cables can be divided into non-metallic fiber cable, ordinary optical cables, and comprehensive optical cables (mainly used for railway dedicated network communication lines).
6. According to different laying methods, optical cables can be divided into pipeline optical cables, underground fiber optic cable (direct burial fiber optic cable), aerial fiber optic cable, and submarine fiber optic cable
Optical Fiber Cables Limit
The Optical Fiber cables are mainly limited by two indicators: allowable tensile strength and flattening forces. See below:Cable typeAllowable tensile (N)Allowable tensile (N)Allowable flattening forces (N/100mm)Allowable flattening forces (N/100mm)Short termLong termShort termLong termDuct, non self-supporting aerial fiber optic cable15006001000300underground fiber optic cable3000100030001000Special direct burial fiber optic cable10000400050003000undersea fiber optic cable (20000N)200001000050003000submarine fiber optic cable(40000N)400002000080005000
Pre Terminated Fiber Cable Methods
Tumblr media
The main methods include permanent connections, emergency connections, and active connections.
1. Permanent fiber optic connection (also known as fiber optic splicing)
2. Emergency connection (also known as cold melt, related product will be mechanical connector or fast connector)
3. Activity Connection
How To Choose Optical Fiber Cable?
Except fiber count and fiber types, we should consider the external sheath of the cable according to its usage environment when we choose which kind of the optic fiber cable.
1. If directly burying outdoor, armored optic fiber cable should be selected such as GYTS GYTA GYXTW, etc. When overhead, a black plastic outer sheath with two or more reinforcing ribs can be used, such as self-supporting drop cable, figure-8 cable, etc.
2. If used in buildings, should care the flame retardant, toxicity, and smoke characteristics. Generally, flame retardant but smokeless types (Plenum) can be selected in pipelines or forced ventilation areas, while flame-retardant, non-toxic, and smokeless types (Riser) should be selected in exposed environments.
3. If vertically laying cables inside the building, distribution cable can be used; If deploying horizontally, breakout cables can be selected.
If the transmission distance is within 2km, multimode fiber can be selected. If the distance exceeds 2km, relay or single mode fiber can be used.

The Strength of Armored Fiber Cables in Connectivity
In the dynamic and rapidly changing world of telecommunications, maintaining connectivity is critical. The complex network of fiber optic cables that crosses continents to provide the flawless transfer of data at extremely fast rates is the backbone of contemporary communication. Among these, the Armored Fiber Cable is the hidden hero that guarantees dependability and toughness. As the name implies, armored fiber cables are made to give the fragile optical fibers inside extra protection. These cables are protected from several external elements that may otherwise impair their function by a strong coating of armor.
Tumblr media
Important Elements and Features
Armor Component
Usually, materials like steel, aluminum, or interlocking metal are used to create the armor layer. This offers a strong barrier against physical harm, vermin, and environmental dangers, guaranteeing the wires stay intact even under trying circumstances.
Power and Sturdiness
Because armored fiber cables and Armored Patch Cable are designed to resist challenging conditions, they may be used in both interior and outdoor installations. The armored layer offers an additional degree of protection against abrasion, crushing, and other possible hazards whether it is routed through buildings, hanging from poles, or buried beneath the earth.
Resistance to Water and Moisture
Water-resistant jackets are frequently included with armored fiber cables to keep moisture out of the cable and stop signal deterioration. They are therefore perfect for use in moist or humid conditions.
Bend radius and flexibility
The idea that armored cables are inflexible is false; contemporary designs place a higher priority on flexibility. Cable routing in confined places is made easier by the armor's regulated bend radius, which preserves the structural integrity of the cables.
Use Cases and Applications
Cables are frequently subjected to harsh environments in factories and other industrial settings, such as chemical exposure, high temperatures, and physical strain. Armored fiber cables offer a reliable and secure communication backbone and are well-suited to withstand these challenging conditions.
Tumblr media
Armored cables and Armored Patchcord are the preferred option for communications networks that need to travel over large distances or over a variety of terrains. These cables can survive weather and external stresses whether they are stretched across utility poles, buried beneath the earth, or put along roadways.

How to identify the quality of optical cables
MV ABC cable
Sheath: Indoor optical cables are generally made of polyethylene or flame-retardant polyethylene, and the appearance should be smooth, bright, flexible, and easy to peel off. The outer sheath of the optical cable with poor quality has poor finish, and it is easy to adhere to the tight sleeve and aramid fiber inside. The PE sheath of the outdoor optical cable should be made of high-quality black polyethylene. After the cable is formed, the sheath is flat, bright, uniform in thickness, and free of small bubbles. The outer sheath of inferior optical cables is generally produced with recycled materials, which can save a lot of cost. The outer sheath of such optical cables is not smooth. Because there are many impurities in the raw materials, the outer sheath of the optical cable made has many very small pits, which will crack and enter after a long time. water.
Optical fiber: Regular optical cable manufacturers generally use A-level fiber cores from major manufacturers. Some low-priced and inferior optical cables usually use C-level, D-level optical fibers and smuggled optical fibers from unknown sources. These optical fibers have a long delivery time due to their complicated sources. It has often become damp and discolored, and multimode fibers are often mixed with single-mode fibers. Generally, small factories lack necessary testing equipment and cannot make judgments on the quality of fibers. Because the naked eye cannot distinguish such optical fibers, the common problems encountered in construction are: narrow bandwidth and short transmission distance; uneven thickness, which cannot be connected with pigtails; optical fibers lack flexibility, and they will break when they are bent.
Tumblr media
Reinforced steel wire: The steel wire of the outdoor optical cable of regular manufacturers is phosphating-treated, and the surface is gray. Such steel wire does not increase hydrogen loss after being cabled, does not rust, and has high strength. Inferior optical cables are generally replaced by thin iron wires or aluminum wires. The identification method is very easy-the appearance is white and can be bent at will when pinched in the hand. The optical cable produced by such steel wire has a large hydrogen loss, and after a long time, the two ends of the optical fiber box will rust and break.
Steel armor: regular production enterprises use double-sided anti-rust coating longitudinal wrapping steel strips, and inferior optical cables use ordinary iron sheets, usually only one side has been treated with anti-rust.
Loose tube: The loose tube for installing optical fiber in the optical cable should be made of PBT material. Such a tube has high strength, no deformation, and anti-aging. Inferior optical cables generally use PVC as the sleeve. The outer diameter of such a sleeve is very thin, and it will be flat when squeezed by hand, a bit like a drinking straw for us to drink.
Fiber paste: The fiber paste in the outdoor optical cable can prevent the oxidation of the optical fiber. Due to the moisture ingress, the fiber paste used in the inferior optical fiber is very little, which seriously affects the life of the optical fiber.
Aramid: Also known as Kevlar, it is a high-strength chemical fiber. It is currently used most in the military industry. Military helmets and bulletproof vests are produced from this material. At present, only DuPont and Aksu in the Netherlands can produce it in the world, and the price is about 300,000 tons. Indoor optical cables and electric overhead optical cables (ADSS) both use aramid yarns as reinforcements. Due to the high cost of aramid, inferior indoor optical cables generally have a very thin outer diameter, so that a few strands of aramid can be used to save costs. Such an optical cable is easily broken when passing through the pipe. Because the ADSS optical cable determines the amount of aramid used in the optical cable according to the span and the wind speed per second, it is generally not dare to cut corners.

FTTA Fiber Optic Distribution Box: Ideal Solution for 5G Network Application
FTTA (Fiber-to-the-Antenna) fiber optic distribution box is used for network access points terminals in the FTTx network. It has inlet and outlet cables pre-connected, eliminating the need for closure opening and fiber splicing. All ports are equipped with hardened adapters. The operators do not need to splice fibers or open boxes during optical distribution network (ODN) deployment, which improves service provisioning efficiency. This article discusses the FTTA fiber optic distribution box.
Tumblr media
What is FTTA Fiber Optic Distribution Box?
FTTA fiber optic distribution box is a new economic fiber distributed solution for outdoor use. It is easy to operate and has high compatibility. It is used for wall-mounting, aerial, and holding pole installations.
Tumblr media
Features and Benefits
High compatibility: can be assembled ODVA, Mini SC, ODC, H-connector
Factory-sealed or field assembly
1200N pulling force long term
From 6 to 12 ports for single or multi-fiber waterproof connectors
Available with PLC or splice sleeve for fiber divide
IP68 waterproof rating
Wall mounting, an aerial installation, or holding pole installation
Meet IEC 61753-1 standard
Application Scenarios
FTTH
Traditional solutions use ONU or FDH (Optical Network Unit/Fiber Distribution Hub) when trunk optical cable arrives outside mansions and villas. FTTA fiber optic distribution box can replace ONU or FDH because of the fiber distribution function. Inside, it can be fixed 2-4pcs 1*8 or 1*16 PLC and can be put 24pcs fiber splice protection sleeves. After mating with a 1-48F IP67 pre-assembled waterproof connector, the FTTA fiber optic distribution box can directly connect each mansion and villa or low-voltage silo. It can reduce signal loss through the fewer connecting nodes.
Tumblr media
FTTA
Traditionally, remote radio units (RRU) and building baseband units (BBU) connected by fiber optic cable, formed star network topology. Each RRU needs one duplex outdoor cable link to BBU. The installation will need more time, and the cost will be high. FTTA fiber optic distribution box works as an Aggregation/Demark box, linking RRU and BBU together. From BBU to FTTA fiber optic distribution box, only need one multi-fiber hybrid cable. Then FTTA fiber optic distribution box divides fibers to each RRU through IP67 pre-assembled waterproof cable assemblies. RRU can get power through assembled power connector on the FTTA fiber optic distribution box. It can avoid needless duplication.
Tumblr media
Trunk Cable Connecting
Trunk cable is fusion welded frequently because each drum cable's length is limited. So connecting point is weak and needs to be protected very well. When the trunk cable comes into the FTTA fiber optic distribution box, it will be sealed and fixed by a torsion-proof cable gland (plastic or metal type). For 5mm/14mm out diameter cable, the FTTA fiber optic distribution box has different accessories to fit.
The torsion gland can release stress when the trunk cable bends and protects fiber to avoid breaking. Inside the FTTA fiber optic distribution box, the main cable and strength member are fixed by a fastener, ensuring that the box can stand 1200N pulling force long term.
Tumblr media
Military Communication
Connectors and cables cannot stand frequently, and high strength pulling and reuse. Inside the FTTA fiber optic distribution box, armored cable and strength member are fixed by a fastener, so ensure that the box can stand 1200N pulling force long term. High-strength material and arc interface design make sure the FTTA fiber optic distribution box works abnormally when suffering shocks.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
FTTA fiber optic distribution box provides waterproof protection for use in harsh environments. It reduces the total cost of operation and has high compatibility and flexibility.
