So I listened to the Something About the Beatles (SATB) latest podcast today, titled “Dear Friend” with the topic of conversation John and Paul’s relationship in the 1970s. So I was thinking that this would be great because I feel like the primary things talked about when the John/Paul 1970s dynamic is discussed is Lennon Remembers, How Do You Sleep and the PlayBoy interview, maybe they’ll throw in the Lost Weekend for balance if they’re feeling so inclined... I’m obviously exaggerating here but... Firstly, before I start my rant, SATB is a good podcast, they usually have great guests (Erin Torkelson Weber the MVP of course), cover interesting topics and Robert Rodriguez is a good host who’s good at challenging things in the story that don’t ring true.

However, I feel like throughout the Beatles active years and into the post break-up years there’s a narrative that has been established that so many people are wedded to, to the point that it’s part of the orthodoxy of the band. In my opinion the narrative is that from first meeting up until the moment that John died Paul was always doing everything to be John’s BFF, he was always trying to be closest to John, no matter what John said or did, Paul would always be the one to try and mend fences and throughout the 70s he was doing whatever he could to end up back working with John. I don’t think this narrative is completely wrong but I think it’s uneven mainly because, in all this, Paul’s importance to John is completely glossed over and John’s manoeuvring to ensure that he was the most important person in Paul’s life is completely missed. So, I just want to highlight some of the instances off the top of my head where I feel that John showed how much he needed to be prioritised in Paul’s life and how much he wanted to mend fences post break-up, that I feel don’t get talked about often enough:

1) John’s competition with Jim McCartney: There’s a lot of stock put into the John-Paul-Stu triangle but that obscures a weird triangle that, maybe Paul wasn’t even aware of, but I think definitely existed which is John-Paul-Jim. By all accounts Jim didn’t want John around and was against John and Paul’s friendship. Jim had a lot of influence over Paul and had a lot of sway as his sole parent once Mary died and I think John was resentful of that. We all know about the ultimatum John gave Paul when he took the job (that Jim implored him to get) which jeopardised his commitment to the band. In John’s eyes and own words, Paul choosing to quit his job to commit fully to the band was Paul choosing John over his dad. No one (in books I’ve only seen Joshua Wolf Shenk discuss this) discusses how Jim was effectively John’s Stu, someone that obstructed his closeness and ability to influence Paul to the point that over a decade later, post break up, John saw Paul focusing on the band as a victory over his dad. John had a jealously of Paul’s closeness and prioritisation of his family that would rear its head further down the road but, by and large, I rarely see this discussed.

2) John’s jealousy of Paul’s other close friendships: On this front, we hear ad nauseam, about Paul’s jealousy of Stu, which is fine because, even without Paul acknowledging it, it’s obvious from space that Paul was jealous of Stu’s closeness to John but we never hear about John’s jealousy of Paul’s other close friendships. All the Beatles were close to Mal Evans but I think Paul was especially close to him (he was the first Beatle to befriend Mal, Mal lived with him at Cavendish for some time, Mal helped Paul write some songs etc.) which got to John. In John’s own words when discussing Magical Mystery Tour he was “choked” when he found out that Paul had come up with the idea with Mal and Mal’s widow has said that Yoko told her that John had told her (whew Chinese whispers time) that he was jealous of Mal’s friendship with Paul... Then there’s Tara Browne, it’s interesting that despite Tara apparently being really friendly and outgoing John never took to him. Maybe it was because Tara was upper class. Maybe it was because after pestering him for months, Paul chose to do LSD with Tara instead of with John and the rest of the band. Maybe it was because Paul invited Tara up to Liverpool, right after Christmas, to hang out with his family resulting in the infamous moped crash. If I put my tin foil hat on, in “A Day in the Life” when John’s reaction to the death of a man in a car crash is “to laugh” is that meaningful? The song is thought to reference Tara but does that passage give us a glimpse into how John saw Tara? If he’s laughing about Tara dying then it sounds like he really didn’t like him, possibly due to his close friendship with Paul.

3) John’s resentment of Paul’s romantic partners: So this one is interesting... There are quite a few examples to walk through so here goes. We have the incident in Hamburg where Paul is in bed with a woman and John (in the aftermath of Stu’s death and probably high on prellies) comes charging in attacking the girl, cutting up her clothes and basically scares her out of the room, maybe that was just the prellies but there seems to be too much of a pattern to ignore. Then there’s Jane of course, we don’t know a ton about John’s interactions with Jane over the years but it’s interesting that he makes a terrible first impression with her (asking her to describe how girls masturbate) and it seems that their relationship is cordial at best going forward (note how Jane and Paul never go on holiday alone with John and Cynthia in the same way George and Ringo did with their respective partners). Peggy Lipton also tells the story about how when she came to hang out with Paul in 1965, John was really rude to her out of nowhere and asked “what she was doing there” and she seemed to think that John couldn’t understand why Paul wanted to take her to dinner if all he was going to do was fuck her. Then, there’s Linda... John consistently gives interviews in the early 70s when he talks about how in a few years Paul will wake up and leave Linda, according to Ray Connolly John couldn’t believe that Paul was staying faithful to Linda and then there’s other weird occurrences in that late 60s/early 70s period. There’s the fan who claims seeing John about to hit a pregnant Linda before Paul stepped in, there’s John rushing to get married as soon as Paul does (8 days later I think which is WILD to me), there’s John describing Paul’s wedding as a “funeral” in ‘71... What does all this tell us? That John was too busy replacing Paul with Yoko to care about Paul anymore? In my book, it’s John’s fears being realised that Paul would always prioritise his family over him when push came to shove, in John’s mind he had won when he was competing with Jim for Paul but once Linda came into the picture and gave Paul the family he always wanted, I think in John’s mind, it was game over. Maybe if Paul had divorced Linda in the 70s (like John predicted) they would have worked together more, we’ll never know, but in a similar way to Yoko, Linda was a wedge in John’s relationship to Paul.

4) John’s attempts post break-up to reach out to Paul: We hear a lot about Paul reaching out to John in the 70s and not engaging with the feuding anymore, it’s Paul that decides not to respond in kind to HDYS, it’s Paul that invites John to the Venus and Mars sessions, it’s Paul going to the Dakota to see/try to see John, it’s always Paul seemingly who misses John and wants to reestablish their relationship. However, according to May Pang, John was happy to do Bangladesh if Paul was doing it too. According to Ray Connolly, John gave him a letter to give to Paul, in the hopes that Paul would call him. According to Paul and other people involved in the One to One concert, John asked Paul to appear with him during his performance in ‘72. And in the face of the backlash from HDYS, John’s the one going around calling Paul his best friend ,other than Yoko, and sending him Beatles bootlegs for Christmas.

All this is to say that John and Paul did not have this one sided relationship where only Paul cared and wanted them to repair things or where only Paul was looking to manoeuvre a situation so he was closest to John, John also wanted to be the closest person in Paul’s life, he was jealously protective of their partnership (see his angry reaction to Paul not coming to him and only him to help with Eleanor Rigby) he also seemed to fear losing Paul to his family which may have happened in his mind, who knows. Because John’s most famous post Beatles interviews have him bashing Paul and Paul’s had 40 years to talk about how much he loved John, there’s this view that Paul loved John more than John loved Paul or that John loved Paul until Yoko came in the picture, at which point Paul was no longer relevant. If Paul meant nothing to John anymore, why did he even bother writing HDYS, if he was so tuned out he wouldn’t have been bothered by Ram, none of the critics were so why was John all over that album more than a Paul is Dead truther?! Why did Yoko block Paul’s calls to John, they were happy to hang out with Ringo, what was so threatening about Paul? Why, according to Robert Rosen, were John’s diaries full of his obsessions about Paul?? We’ll never know a lot of the answers to these questions but I would love it if more podcasts even acknowledged that these questions exist and acknowledged that Paul was such a huge part of John’s life till his dying day: “we have our ups and downs but I would do anything for Paul and I think he would do anything for me” John Lennon December 8 1980.

Apologies for the rant it seems listening to Beatles podcasts always seems to set me off! But SATB is a good podcast, just feel that there are so many interesting conversations that get missed in favour of the usual narrative time and time again, so close but no cigar!

Thanks to @onesweetdreampodcast and @anotherkindofmindpod for being the only podcast I’ve heard to date brave enough to discuss these questions, I think doing that will give us a much better understanding of the Beatles and how their story unfolded.

All characters of my Star vs the Forces of Evil next gen so far! This is the post that contains all their bios and trivia.

Now onto introductions!

From (your) left to (your) right, we have:

Katrina: one of the many children of Buff Frog (aka Yvgeny Bulgolyubov) and a very smart/talented fighter. She spends much of her day working out, and since the monsters have found more peace on Mewni, she's joined the Butterfly royal guard in a sort of integration program.

Meteora: formerly the villain Miss Heinous, Meteora received a second chance at life when she was reborn. She was raised by her mom Eclipsa and dad Globgor, and while they ruled Mewni after the issues of the true Butterfly bloodline and monster vs Mewman were settled, Meteora eventually decided to give the throne back to Star Butterfly. She now acts as an adviser and tutor to Star's children, and may or may not have a crush on Marco Jr.

Marco Jr: the next son of Angie and Rafael Diaz, Marco Jr (aka MJ) has grown up surrounded by magic and mayhem. He's gotten used to it though, and even joins his older brother Marco on his trips back to Mewni. He is a very chill and relaxed person, much more than his brother, and enjoys going where the winds take him. He has a strong talent in music, and may or may not have a crush on Meteora.

Harleen: the eldest daughter of Foolduke and Ruberiot, she's grown up with her mother's sense of humour and her father's performance skills. She loves clowning around and often does comedic clown routines, and while a little destructive with an affinity for chaos, she has a good heart.

Aloe: a little shy and kind of awkward, Aloe is the eldest son of Slime and Princess Spiderbite. As he is half-slime monster, he oozes a lot of slime and this often causes him to be rather clumsy. He's not the most commanding of princes, but he's very sweet and can always find the good in others.

Coloratura aka Rara: musically talented, this unicorn from the Cloud Kingdom is famed for her songs and performances. She's also very kind and mature, although she has a strong desire to make her mark on society. She got to know the others during a misadventure in the Cloud Kingdom seeking her autograph, and she was happy to make friends, since her life can get rather lonely.

Muse: ethereally charming and incredibly smart, Muse is the son of Janna and Oskar. Because his mother became the talent agent and manager for his musician father, Muse has always lived a life in the limelight. Growing up like this means he knows how to be fast on his feet, and rather than pick up his father's spacey attitude, he's instead inherited Janna's keen senses of business and...well, other talents, like pickpocketing. Muse is known to be a flirt and a heartbreaker, but he's still a loyal friend.

Quince: despite being Harleen's younger brother, Quince is very much so not like his sister. He has spent a lot of his life under the tutelage of their family friend Mime Girl, and his easily frightened nature means he's chosen to pursue the path of a mime rather than a clown like Harleen, or a jester like their mother Foolduke.

Chandelure: one day, when Hekapoo was very very bored, she happened to drop a little bit of wax and eventually Chandelure was born. While his mother is not all that present in his life, Chandelure has no issues with that. He's learned the craft of making dimension-hopping scissors from Hekapoo, and works with her in safeguarding travel between dimensions. Chandelure is incredibly independent and snarky, so talking to him can often feel very one-sided. That being said, he is a good friend.

Weslie: son of Princess Ram and Heartrude Butterfly, Weslie is the prince to his mother's kingdom. He is very cheerful and clever, and while friendly, he knows when to stand his ground. In the crisis of the werewolves attempting to invade the Kingdom of the Green Pastures, he's helped in fighting them back. He has many friends in his own kingdom, but he greatly loves visiting his Butterfly family in Mewni.

Tyrian: the only child of Tom Lucitor, king of the Underworld, and his wife, Jackie Lynn Thomas, Tyrian is not at all what most people expect from a demon prince. He's quite shy and often even lonely, and has weak demon powers because he's not even half-demon (Tom himself is half-demon). Despite this, he does have a temper, and when it flares, his demonic powers really seem to come out quite strong. His hair turns from blond to red when he's uncomfortable, and when angry, his hair can burst into flames (at max rage mode, his hair becomes a blue flame).

Shiara: as a descendant of the Pony Head royal family, Shiara may be able to inherit the throne...but there is quite a lot of competition, and Shiara herself has little interest in ruling. She mainly loves going out for parties and having fun. Despite this, her sense of responsibility kicks in when it's needed, and she has a love of puzzles.

Celeste: twin sister to Crescent and the daughter of Star and Marco, Celeste is much more like her mother in personality. She's quite an unorthodox princess and doesn't really have interest in studying magic or how to be the next queen, even though as the girl, she is to inherit the Mewni throne. Celeste loves to make friends. While she was quite close to Crescent when they were younger, she is disappointed by his distant attitude now.

Crescent: twin brother to Celeste and the son of Star and Marco, Crescent is more like his father. While not as safety-focused or as willing to let loose and have fun, Crescent is quite serious and even studious. He works hard to perfect his magic and learn how to be a good royal for the benefits of Mewni, especially because he is one of the rare instances of a boy being born to the Butterfly family. This means that he can't inherit the throne according to tradition because he has a sister, and this has made him grow jealous of her, especially because she doesn't take her studies seriously. While she received the wand instead of him, it split in half when he grabbed it, making his very faded cheek marks finally visible.

Whitney: daughter of Brittney Wong, Whitney is not nearly as mean as her mother. She is kind of spoiled and often plays dumb, but she's actually quite clever. While being raised to be a picture perfect child, Whitney personally dislikes the way her mother runs things and how the rich people around them act. It is through meeting Crescent and Celeste that she eventually grows as a person and can learn to stand up to her mother.

Kyle: the only son of Kelly, Kyle does not know who his father is. Kelly spends much of her time training as a warrior, and while Kyle has studied martial arts as well, he prefers curling up with a good book much more. He desires to know everything about everything. Being quite emotionless and even snarky, Kyle can be difficult to befriend, but he often doesn't mean to hurt anyone when he seems a little too straightforward.

Vera: the second child of Slime and Princess Spiderbite, Vera is a very cheerful and happy little girl. She's very outgoing and optimistic, coming off as the opposite of her older brother Aloe, but like him, she also sees the good in everyone. She is known for her sweet nature, and she also jumps at the chance to learn more about the world. This is perhaps why she's one of the only ones who isn't deterred by Kyle's dead-serious sarcasm, because even as he grows annoyed with her peppiness, he appreciates her desire to learn.

Y'Gythgba aka Mona Lisa: a Septarian, Mona was hatched and taken in by Meteora after the younger kids, including Crescent and Celeste, have a bit of a misadventure in the Mewni swampland where many monsters still live (despite Star, Meteora, and Eclipsa's hard work at reintegrating monsters into Mewman society). There they found an abandoned Septarian egg, which they brought back. Meteora named her Y'Gythba from legends she'd heard of an alien race called the Salamandrians, but when she found the name was quite hard to pronounce for most people, she nicknamed the young Septarian "Mona Lisa", after the famous Earthen masterpiece, in the hopes that Mewmans will see her beauty. This is because even as monsters and Mewmans grow less separated, Septarians remain the one monster race that Mewmans cannot stand, because of Toffee and Seth. Now that they've both been defeated, Meteora is determined to raise Mona without the hatred that many Septarians seem to have, and for the most part, Mona is a very sweet and smart young girl—just with a few violent tendencies. Meteora has put her in training of the royal Mewni army, and Mona has proven to be very skilled in battle. She is very loyal, although she does have a temper. Only time will tell if she ends up being the answer to Mewni's Septarian problem.

Trivia:

Harleen and Quince are based a little bit on Harley Quinn, hence their names. Aren't I clever? Lol.

Yes, Rara is based on the Rara from My Little Pony. I thought it'd be fun to base Pony Head-like characters on MLP, but it was hard choosing who to base them on. I might do a few more based on the mane six and/or princesses.

Muse may look like he has an eye issue, but the extreme sparkliness is thanks to his dad. Oh, and yeah I sort of matched Janna and Oskar for fun; figured it might work.

Chandelure is based on the evolution line of the Pokémon Litwick, Lampent, and Chandelure! I wanted to give Hekapoo a kid even though it seems unlikely she'd ever have one, and basing the kid on that evolution line seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Weslie is based on the character from the series Chinese cartoon Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf (喜羊羊与灰太狼 (Xǐ Yáng Yáng yǔ Huī Tài Láng), with a direct translation being "Pleasant Goat and Grey Big Wolf"). He's specifically based on the main character, 喜羊羊 (Xǐ Yáng Yáng), whose English names include Weslie, Happy, or Pleasant Goat.

Oh, if Weslie's legs look broken, it's because I wasn't sure if I wanted to full-on goat legs or just human legs, so I sort of tried to do both haha.

Shiara's colour scheme comes from this comic where I put in an arbitrary friend for Celeste to goof off with, but she wasn't fully shown and was pretty random.

I do NOT have a parent planned for Shiara, and she isn't Pony Head's kid (I don't really see Pony Head as a mom?). If any of you have suggestions for a parent let me know!

Whitney is 100% based on Whitney Biskit from the show Littlest Pet Shop! I'm considering what if I gave her the twin Britney Biskit but I feel like it'd be weird making Brittney Wong name a child after herself...or maybe not?? Idk, do you guys think I should give her a twin? Or would that take away from the twins Crescent and Celeste?

I gave Kelly a kid just because. x'D

Mona Lisa is 100% based on Mona Lisa from the TMNT 2012 series! I had a free space left and I sort of went, "Why not design one last one?" While scouring my mind for ideas, I thought I'd make a monster kid and ended up choosing the Septarian race for the story ideas. That's when I thought of Mona Lisa—heck, even their species names sound similar lol: Salamandrian (TMNT 2012) and Septarian (SVtFoE).

Designing Luxendarc with Doll Makers #3- Growing the Family Tree

So, kids. When you ship characters, sometimes you have them have kids, and I'm not the only one.

My problem is, sometimes, it can get a little outta hand when you have lots of AUs. I had to make a freaking LIST of which children goes with who- and that's just with two characters, Janne and Yew! They have fifteen kids in all my AUs between the two! Thankfully, due to headcanons, Tiz and Agnès do not have the same problem as those two and only has four kids, and as for Edea and Ringabel... Let's just say I'm waiting for Third and leave it at that.

THE LISTS:

THE KIDS:

Rubina Arch-Geneolgia

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby. My adorable Ruby. I managed to use a customizer made to create your own Corrin to design you, Ruby. You are the heiress of House Arch-Geneolgia and YOU OWN IT, sweetie. You were the biggest evidence that your mother's looks wasn't due to albinism when you were born with everything but her hair color- instead, you inherited your uncle's hair color, except a tad darker. In Swanverse, you and your cousin Eloise are as thick as thieves, and as older sisters to your respective siblings, how can you not? The same thing happens with your cousin Bastet. You're also very close to Uncle Janne- in fact, he taught you everything you know about swordplay, making sure to take care of the wounds you end up with. Nikolai was also your grandpa figure, as warm and kind as your father.

Once you got old enough, you continued the Geneolgia tradition of joining the Crystalguard, and even used the Kaiser Asterisk as a Sub to help your abilities. The scar on your nose was a result of a successful mission as a cadet, a badge of honor that represented the will of House Arch-Geneolgia. You'll even end up as a member of the Three Cavaliers, though without the influences of the high houses, you weren't the leader. Being the heiress of House Arch-Geneolgia is responsibility enough.

Basil Arch-Geneolgia

Oh, Basil, you and your poliosis. Your role as member of House Arch-Geneolgia made you perfect in becoming an ambassador, and your charming Geneolgia looks helps you in that role. While your sister Ruby looks more like your mother, you, on the other hand, look a whole lot like both your father and your uncle. You're three years younger than Rubina, in fact, and four years older than Branwen. While you're not interested in being an Asterisk Bearer, you did had training with them, preferring the skills of the Ranger and Pirate Asterisks. You end up being best friends with Yasu, who's parents were once trainees under your father and your grandpa figure. Your family is very important to you, as well, and you always make sure your parents and sisters are always in good health.

Of course, you're not exactly perfect- you have an immense fear of wasps and had learn fire magic to deal with them. And because you know so many languages, sometimes you end up a little tongue-tied at figuring out the word in one language while knowing said word in another! And yet that also adds to your charm.

Branwen Arch-Geneolgia

There's another Branwen, when your father Yew is married Balestra instead of Arch. You two Branwen almost share the same name. Both of you are the youngest children. The two of you have the typical Geneolgia glasz eyes, with your non-Geneolgia parent's eye shape. And speaking of your non-Geneolgia parent, the both of you inherited their hair color, as well as their skin tone. You've also inherited your mothers', ah, bust-size (or in the other Branwen's case, her grandmother's as well). Neither of you prefer combat, and instead preferred in dabbing in every Asterisk for non-combative utilities.

However, you are the youngest of three siblings instead four, and you prefer Asterisks such as White Mage, Bishop, Performer and Patissier. You end up working for the Orthodoxy as some sort of cleric, but your main role as a member of House Arch-Balestra is to make sure everyone in Gathelatio aren't being idiots. Especially the high houses, who does have a history of making stupid decisions.

Wolfram Balestra-Geneolgia

Wolf, you take after your father Janne and uncle Denys in looks. You have Janne's dark hair and Denys's eye color, thought your eyes are darker. You are a stoic young man, yet as passionate as your parents and as scholarly as Yew(berry). You are the eldest, your brother Esteban born three years after you. Your name was chosen to match your parents, but the "ram" also doubled as a nod to your Crystalfather Tiz, the shepherd of Norende. Your kind heart made you follow in your surrogate grandfather's path and become the next Bishop Asterisk Bearer, but you added an impressive skill to your repertoire- bo staff training. You've also trained in the White Mage Asterisk for some offensive abilities, but your greatest weapon is your politeness- you know politeness judo, and you use it well.

You are the heir of House Balestra-Geneolgia, however you decided not to become the head, instead giving the role to your younger brother Esteban, that you see as the better leader of the four of you. Thankfully, your siblings agreed with that decision. You've started a school funded by the high houses of Gathelatio for the impoverished children, thanks to your younger sister Alstroemeria's rather... forceful personality. (Honestly, it wasn't a surprised that Meria was very much a chip off the old block named Janne. People has joked she was born via budding.)

Esteban Balestra-Geneolgia

Born three years after Wolfram and two years before your sister Alstroemeria, you look so Geneolgia that it's sometimes easy to forget you've inherited your father Janne's green eyes and your Balestra grandmother's freckles. Training has left you a scar at your eyebrow, which you kept as a reminder to be careful. You're a pretty quiet guy, but you're also rather adventurous, hot-blooded and outgoing. You never wanted to be an Asterisk Bearer, but you do dabble in Emperor when the time is needed. You are fond of archery, and have trained intensely in it since you could hold a bow.

You are next in line as heir of House Balestra-Geneolgia, but your natural leadership skills made Wolfram choose you over him as head of the household, which you accepted. Like the rest of your family, you worked in improving Gathelatio and its citizens, and your main goal was to ensure enough jobs were created to help sustain Gathelatio's citizens and keep the economy growing. You also help created a boom of tabletop games, creating a new reason for social gathering.

Alstroemeria Balestra-Geneolgia

Meria, you just look like a female version of Janne with Yew(berry)'s hair and eye color. Heck, you were even born on the same day as Janne! Younger than Esteban at two years while older than Branwen at four, you are the most vocal of them as well as a natural-born leader like Esteban. Because you take so much after your father Janne, it didn't came as a surprise when you became the next Fencer Asterisk Bearer. You've also studied under Kamiizumi to learn the ways of the Swordmaster Asterisk, bolstering your aptitude with the sword.

While you are a natural-born leader, you weren't interested in becoming head of House Balestra-Geneolgia, and was overjoyed when Esteban took the position. Instead, you aimed to use your talents to become the leader of the Three Cavaliers, and became the first Balestra to do so, while being the first Geneolgia to gain the position without the influence of a High House. You enjoyed helping out trainees find their talents within the Crystalguard, and your willingness to aid people quickly made you a popular figure in Gathelatio. You also have a massive sweet tooth (thought not to the insane intensity that is Edea Lee) and would always go to the local bakery and sweet shops to buy the daily specials.

Branwen Balestra-Geneolgia

I've already spoken of your Arch-Geneolgia counterpart above. The baby of the family, born four years after Meria, you are reserved and formal- and yet you're an extrovert who eschews tradition. Thanks to the former Pope Agnès, a group of untouched Asterisks were found, and you got up to the task of trying them out, seeing if everything was polished to be useful for potential Asterisk Bearers. You seem to have an affinity to one known as the Engineer Asterisk, which you end up being its Bearer.

Like the other Branwen, you ensure that the high houses doesn't do anything stupid with the influence of House Balestra-Geneolgia, however it's your technological prowess that put you on the map. Your studies of the Celestial Altair's creations help in revolutionizing Luxendarc's technology to a new level, while ensuring that these creations were environmentally friendly, knowing what resulted in the Celestial Realm's state of affairs.

Eloise Balestra

No one could guess that your fathers adopted you when you were three- you have enough resemblance to Janne's parents as it is, but your personality is, well, just like Meria, you're another chip off the old block. Yet you take pride of your origins as a girl from the New Grandship Republic, and like the corsairs before you, you've had a tattoo made when old enough celebrating your identity. Yet you also take pride of being part of the reborn Balestra family, recreating your father Denys' markings on his mechanical arm for your tattoo. In tribute to your father Janne, you try to mimic an old hairstyle of his... as thick as your hair is, you still can't get it as wild as good ol' dad. You like to play hairstylist on your spare time, as well.

You inherit the Fencer Asterisk, while dabbling in both Spell Fencer and Swordmaster for extra help. You end up, like your cousin Rubina, becoming a member of the Crystalguard as well as the Three Cavaliers. You also currently possess what was once known as Vendetta- you rebaptized it Redeemer, a fitting new name under your hand. You also technically own Boots, a cat that came into the family before you joined, but who only likes you, and you alone.

Falk Balestra

You fell short of inheriting the Fencer Asterisk, but at the very least you're capable of using it as a Sub-Asterisk! The main reason why you had problems with Fencer is that one day, you've misused one of it's abilities, and your rapier whack your face and left you with a scar over your left eye. Cue your fathers freaking out and Janne forbidding you to use Fencer until you were a bit more responsible. You and your twin Aurel joined the Balestra family a little after Rubina's first birthday, taken from Eisenburg at the age of four. Your parents died when leftover toxic mist mixed with something that resulted in a nasty explosion in your small village.

As you grew older, you mellowed out personality-wise and decided that perhaps being part of the Crystalguard as a knight just wasn't ideal for you. Instead, you aimed to become a swordplay teacher to the cadets hoping to be knights of the Crystalguard, guiding them to responsible use of their chosen weapons- something you had to learn when you received your scar. With a smile and a kind but aggressive attitude towards teaching, you've not only met your goal, but became the go-to person to teach Janne's famous fencing skills.

Aurel Balestra

Taking an Asterisk who's former Bearer was, well... You received Salvemaker from Eternia thanks to your intense studies in chemistry and alchemy, and sworn to not become another Qada. ...Which is easier done than said in your case, seeing that you were raised by kind hearted people who adopted you after you lost your parents and hometown. Besides being an Asterisk Bearer, you're also a well-known fashionista and you let your older sister Eloise style your hair. Personality-wise, you're quite similar to your uncle Yew, and it's his talk about his studies in Al-Khampis that made you want to be who you are nowadays.

Your work in the alchemic fields helped making new medical discoveries that would've been impossible without the help of Salvemaker. Qada's famous poison, you not only managed to find how he managed to make it, but what would be the perfect antidote to it, and how to prevent its misuse from happening again. This, among other findings, made you join Eternia's Council of Six per your uncle Yew's suggestion, which suited you perfectly, as you would take the position once held by the former wielder of the Spiritmaster Asterisk.

Bastet Balestra

Bast, despite being named after a goddess of cats, you grew fond of foxes. At first glance, you look like your father, but there's much more of your mother with a second glance that you're a good blend of your parents. Personality-wise you're quite similar to Edea Lee, except without the absurd sweet tooth, crazy appetite, black and white insanity, and aggressive matchmaking. You were pretty little when you received the scar on your face, but you don't remember how you got it and who did it to you- your grampy Nikolai simply said it was from some animal, but it was never clarified. You were born exactly between your cousins Rubina and Basil, who are three years apart.

You also became a Six-Stars graduate of Al-Khampis, thanks to your studies in both fabric fibers and magical manipulations of medicine. You are also the current Bearer of the Arcanist Asterisk, however you only use it in dire need, having been trained in your parents' Asterisks themselves. And although you're a fox person, you're forbidden from touching the Yokai Asterisk for now, until your uncle Yew feels comfortable with you using it. Your main goal, however, is to start your own clothing lines that would benefit the poor somehow, either by being part of your team or via funding supported by the brand.

Oskar Balestra

You resemble your father quite a lot, and inherited your Balestra grandmother's freckles, but one look at your eyes and anyone can tell you're Minette's kid. At first glance, you didn't seem remarkable among your siblings. You and your twin sister Astrid were born three years after Bastet, but among the five of you, you seemed the most plain. That is, until all of you were able to distance yourself from each other a bit that your personality- that you're a total goofball with a nack of improving utilities. Weaving looms? You managed to design one perfectly for rugs. The kitchen stove? You've redesigned it for new types of fueling. You turned the saw into a musical instrument, even! Not that you couldn't invent things- in fact, you are Luxendarc's creator of the scratching post.

You only have Catmaster and Fencer as Sub-Asterisks, but that's because you preferred refining utilities over combat. You often visited Sagitta to understand their technology and how to peacefully apply it to the current standard of the rest of Luxendarc. While not a Six Stars student like your older sister, you did place your mark for your re-inventions in Al-Khampis, and your studies on applying your discoveries became part of many a curriculum, and not just in Al-Khampis!

Astrid Balestra

Your father once joked to your mother that your calico looks came from her- and indeed, part of your hair is your father's color and the other part is your mother's. You also have your mother's eyes while, like your twin Oskar, you have your grandmother's freckles. You were born without your left leg, but prosthetic technology helped you in being able to walk- and your false leg is pretty resourceful as a bludgeoning weapon. It wasn't a surprised when you ended up being the new Catmancer, or that you grew fond of your trademark color- the purple of a Five-Stars Al-Khampis student.

You've decided to join the Crystalguard, since your father was a member, and one day replaced him as a member of the Three Cavaliers. Soon, and not surprising in the least, you became THE face of the Crystalguard, which helped you when the role of the Three Cavaliers' leader was given to you not long after. You continued on your parents' work in the reformation of the Crystalguard and the Orthodoxy, including creating the Order of the Metal Limb, a honor given to people that helped society grow despite their disabilities, named after the fact that you yourself have a prosthetic leg.

Remus Balestra

The third chip off the old block, and the eldest of the mirror twins. Romulus and you are a year and a half younger than the other twins (much to your parents' distress), and both of you are redheads with heterochromia of blue and green- however, it's the placement of the colors that identifies you: green on the right, blue on the left. There was no surprise when you inherited the Fencer Asterisk, or that you joined the Crystalguard. Like father, like son, after all.

What made people caught off guard was that you weren't interested in becoming part of the Three Cavaliers. No, instead, you suggested creating a new unit in the Crystalguard that you could help develop, the Inner Guard- a unit specifically build to ensure the mistakes of the old Orthodoxy and the Crystalguard never happened again, being aware of the crimes that plagued Eternia for generations, and how they affected your parents. And once you were old enough, you were given the position of leader of the Inner Guard, who's only bosses are the Three Cavaliers and the Pope. You also playfully doubled as a model for your sister Bastet's clothing lines, wearing them during down time.

Romulus Balestra

While you are the mirror twin of Remus, you are much more like your grandfather Jerome in personality. Your eyes are green on the left and blue on the right, and the small scar on your cheek was from training with your father in survival. You also had the potential to inherit Fencer, but you left it in the hands of your brother Remus, not interested in the least in anything involving Asterisks, the Crystalguard, or anything related to them as a whole. You were much more interested in the history of Eternia and the fallout that resulted by the Great Plague, as well as how it changed all of Luxendarc.

You've decided to undertake perhaps a rather unusual challenge- rebuilding the lands destroyed by the Great Plague. Your first target was the village that turned into Gravemark, finding land not far from it suitable for rebuilding. With the information provided by Braev and Mahzer Lee, you also kept the culture of the area alive as well. This started the ball rolling as the Duchy, with the help of the Orthodoxy, decided to follow along and rebuild other villages and towns, revitalizing Eternia's population. You end up mayor of the new village you've put sweat, blood and tears into, a fitting conclusion for you.

...Two guys, four family possibilities, fifteen kids, who knows how many AUs. Yeah, this is me in a nutshell.

The New Nest WiFi from Google Is WiFi for the 2019 Smart Home

A little over a year ago, I went looking for a new router for our home. I tried a few and was disappointed. I eventually settled on a system Perry recommended. It’s okay, but I’ve spent the last few days checking out the brand new Nest WiFi from Google, and I’m impressed.

Three years ago, Google launched its first WiFi system. Three years later, it is still the number one mesh system on the market. Part of the reason for that is the regular updates that enhance features and keep the system’s security able to address new threats. The goal was, as the team begins the system explain during an interview last week, to provide great WiFi that’s easy to set up and even easier to use. So what, the team wondered, could they do next?

That ultimately led to the Nest WiFi that is available today.

Google is selling the Nest WiFi Sistem in a variety of different configurations. I was sent a “two-pack.” It includes a Nest WiFi router and a Nest WiFi Point. More in that in a moment.

According to the team behind the new Nest WiFi, the combination of one router and one WiFi point should cover up to 3800 square feet. The router creates the network while the WiFi Point (or Points) works with it to create a mesh network that blankets your home or office with fast WiFi.

As they explain:

A traditional, single router has relatively limited coverage. It becomes spotty the farther away you are. Extenders can add a bit more range, but they degrade performance. Nest Wifi is a scalable system that gives both whole-home coverage and a consistently strong signal.

The router that comes as part of the new Nest WiFi looks simple but packs some serious tech chops inside. A rounded cylinder, there is no antenna to be seen. Routers of the past looked like a spider whose legs were directed upward. The new Nest WiFi looks like a humongous egg laid by one of those spiders. The soft-touch material doesn’t call attention to itself, and it is available in a number of colors. A Google “G” is subtly embossed on top. It is small enough that most people won’t notice it.

Underneath the router, there is a port for the included AC power, one Ethernet port for connecting to a modem (the router wirelessly spreads out the internet signal but it still needs to receive a signal from a modem), and a port for connecting to other devices.

A channel at the back allows the router to sit flush even as the cables extend behind it. finally, when the router is plugged in a small LED illuminates. It is bright enough to let you know the router has power but not so large or bright at to be disrupted. Taking all of this together means the Nest Router can fit into pretty much any decor without impacting the aesthetics.

The design of the router isn’t just about making something that looks cool. It is also about making something that doesn’t scream to be hidden in a closet or behind a cabinet door. Those spider-like routers were so hideous that many of us, myself included, often did out best to get them out of sight. Unfortunately, that’s the worst place for a router as it cuts down on the signal range and strength. Ideally, a router should be out and fully exposed. That, of course, lets the signal mode as freely as possible. In order to do that, however, you need something that is aesthetically pleasing or, at the least aesthetically neutral. That’s exactly what the Nest WiFi router is.

That design, however, comes at a cost. The one outgoing Ethernet port isn’t nearly enough for many homes. I asked the team about this decision, and they told me their research showed only five percent of users actually need and use multiple ethernet ports on WiFi routers. The solution, of course, is to get an inexpensive Ethernet Network Switch. That’s exactly what I did, and it works just fine for everything from my Sonos audio system to my Hue Hub.

The Nest WiFi router may look simple but it’s packed with updated tech. Compared to the Google WiFi router it replaces, the Nest WiFi router has an updated antenna, a fast quad-core processor running at 1.4GHz, double the RAM and updated Bluetooth that eliminates the need for a peerage hub when connecting many smartphone devices. So while the Nest WiFi router looks simple it is best described as a “WiFi wolf in sheep’s clothing.” (And a speedy WiFi wolf at that!)

As I mentioned, I was sent a two-pack of the new Nest WiFi system. It retails for $269. A three-pack of one router and two WiFi Points is also available for $349. The WiFi points create the mesh network that blankets your home in WiFi. We’ll come back to that in a moment.

Setting up the router was simple. In fact, it was the simplest WiFi setup I have ever done. I unplugged my old router, plugged in the Google Nest WiFi router and launched the Google Home app on my phone. I tapped on “Add Device” and the app walked me through the process step by step. In my case, I keep the same network name and password so, once the setup was completed and I had plugged my Ethernet network switch into the free Ethernet port on the router, all my devices were back online.

After the router was set up, the app asked if I wanted to add ant WiFi points. I indicated that I did and, once again, the app walked me through the setup process in a step-by-step manner that even the most tech-averse person would appreciate.

Once the WiFi point was added to the network, the app ran a test to check its “mesh-iness.” After a few seconds, it indicated that the mesh network was up and running. I then asked the app to run a speed test. After about a minute it told me I had “blazing fast” speeds.

The router offers some neat features, chief among those features is the Guest Network. Sure, guest networks are standard these days, but the implementation here is neat. From the app, you can turn on the guest network. You can then select which devices that are currently on the man network can be accessed by someone using the guest network. Right there is a level of control that should impress. In addition, logging onto a Guest Network can be a pain if the password is long and complex.

If you have a Nest Hub display device like the Google Nest Hub Max I am currently reviewing, logging on to the Guest Network is as simple as swiping down from the top of the screen, tapping the WiFi icon (they call it a coin) and pointing the camera on the phone or tablet seeking WiFi at the QR code that appears. Within seconds the device will be authenticated and online.

The implementation of “Family WiFi” is another nice feature. It lets users set up a series of groups and then control the access of those groups. For example, one could set up a group called “kids” and have their offspring access the internet through that group. That group, however, may be limited to “safe search” and can be set to turn on or off at specific times of the day. That way, for example, WiFi may be available for the group during the homework hours of 6-9 pm but turn off at 9:01. It is a great way to give adults control over their kids’ internet usage. It could also be used to make sure there is no internet usage during meals or other family times.

Other Features Include:

Stream with speed: One Nest Wifi router with one Wifi point is strong enough to handle up to 200 connected devices, and it’s fast enough to stream multiple 4K videos at a time.

Connects: Connects you to the fastest WiFi point and keeps buffering at bay from room to room.

Updates: Regular software updates improve your WiFi performance over time.

Optimizes: Puts your network on the clearest channel and fastest band to avoid congestion.

Coverage: Router covers upo to 2200 square feet while WiFi point adds up to 1600 additional coverage

Expandable 802.11s mesh WiFi: Scalable and flexible; add routers or points any time

Multiple connections: Each router and point can each handle up to 100 connected devices and can handle multiple simultaneous 4K video streams a with ease

WPA3 encryption: Automatic secutirty updates ad a trusted platform module

Thus far, I have discussed the Nest WiFi Points as key to establishing a mesh network. It is all of that, but with the new Nest WiFi system, the WiFi point is also a smart assistant. Unlike the router which has a solid top, the WiFi point (from here simple referee to as WiFiP) has four microphone holes on top and a hidden speaker grill on the bottom. The holes are, of course, for the Far-field microphones needed when using the Google Assistant.

If you tap the top two hidden LED illuminate indicating where the volume up and volume down buttons are.

When you say, “Hey Google” a light at the bottom of the WiFiP lights up to indicate the device is listening. From there it is essentially a Google Home Mini. You can ask it questions, use it to control your smart home devices or ask it to play music. The speaker puts out 360-degree sound thanks to a 40 mm driver and has Bluetooth 5.0. The sound from the speaker isn’t going to win any audiophile awards, but it is more than passable.

I asked the design team why they added Google Assistant to the WiFiP but not the router. They explained that, in their research, the router isn’t usually kept in a high traffic area; ours is, but that is just us.) In addition, adding the theology to turn the router into a Google Assistant would have required a far larger unit even as they were trying to keep things as small and understated as possible.

I played around with various locations for the WiFiP and discovered the guest room was the best location for covering the upstairs with WiFi. It also puts a Google Assistant in that room. I have the Google Nest Hub Max in the kitchen and a Google Nest Mini in the bedroom, so my entire upstairs is now Google Assistant-powered.

With the router and WiFiP set up, I get coverage in my entire house. Downstairs in my office, however, I see a bit of degradation in the signal: I expect I’ll pick up an additional WiFiP. That, in turn, will not only give me amazing WiFi downstairs, but it will also put Google Assistant there as well. It’s pretty cool.

Finally, it is worth noting that Google made the new system backward compatible. That’s good news if you already have a Google WiFi system at home. And last but not least, it is worth noting that Google used sustainable materials in their manufacturing. The external enclosure of both router and the WiFiP s made from at least 40% post-consumer recycled plastic.

I was happy with my previous WiF system. It worked and seemed to be quite stable. Thanks to the easy setup, expandability, powerful account controls and the addition of Google Assistant to the WiFiPs, this new Google Nest WiFi system has replaced it. I’m a fan, and I can see Google’s voice services slowly making their way into my home. That’s a good thing. Check out the new Nest WiFi from Google here.
