Canelo Alvarez: The Undisputed King Of Boxing
By: Joseph Correa
Canelo Alvarez: The Undisputed King of the Ring
In the neon-lit heart of Las Vegas, where dreams are made and broken in the blink of an eye, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez once again proved why he's the undisputed monarch of the boxing world. The Mexican superstar's latest conquest? A dominant victory over Edgar Berlanga, adding another jewel to his already glittering crown.
The Fight: A Display of Mastery
The air crackled with anticipation as the bell rang to signal the start of the bout. The crowd, a sea of red, white, and green - the colors of the Mexican flag - roared as their hero made his way to the ring. Berlanga, the young lion from Brooklyn with dynamite in his fists, entered with dreams of dethroning the king. But Canelo, as he has done time and time again, had other plans.
The fight was a masterclass in the sweet science. Canelo's footwork was poetry in motion, his defense impenetrable, and his offense surgically precise. In the third round, a left hook crashed into Berlanga's chin with the force of a freight train, sending the challenger to the canvas. The crowd erupted, their collective gasp turning into a thunderous cheer. It was a moment that encapsulated Canelo's career – power, timing, and technique, all rolled into one devastating punch.
Berlanga, to his credit, showed heart. He rose from the canvas, determination etched on his face, and adjusted his strategy. The Brooklyn native managed to hear the final bell, earning respect from both Canelo and the crowd. But the outcome was never in doubt. Canelo's victory was comprehensive, a unanimous decision that left no room for debate.
The Reign Continues
This victory marks Canelo's fourth consecutive win since his lone setback against Dmitry Bivol in 2022. At 34 years old, when many fighters begin to decline, Canelo seems to be aging like fine wine. His skills are sharper than ever, his ring IQ unmatched, and his hunger for greatness undiminished.
"Now what are they going to say?" Canelo asked defiantly in his post-fight interview, a mix of pride and frustration in his voice. "I fight younger fighters. They say I fight older fighters. They always talk. ... My experience, my talent, my hard work, my intelligence, everything together [makes me the best]."
Indeed, what more can be said about a man who has conquered four weight divisions, held multiple world championships, and consistently taken on all comers? Canelo's resume reads like a who's who of boxing's elite – Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gennadiy Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, and now Edgar Berlanga. Each fight and victory has been another brick in the monument to his greatness.
The Road to Greatness
To truly appreciate Canelo's dominance, one must understand his journey. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Saul Alvarez began boxing at the tender age of 13. His distinctive red hair earned him the nickname "Canelo," Spanish for cinnamon. Little did anyone know that this redheaded teenager would grow to become one of the most feared and respected fighters in the world.
Canelo turned pro at 15, fighting grown men when most boys his age were worried about high school dances. He honed his craft in the unforgiving rings of Mexico, developing the granite chin, thunderous body shots, and relentless work ethic that would become his trademarks.
His ascent through the ranks was meteoric. By 20, he had captured his first world title. By 23, he faced the legendary Floyd Mayweather in a super fight that shattered pay-per-view records. Though he lost that night, Canelo used the experience as fuel, transforming himself from a good fighter into a great one.
The Future: New Challenges and Fan Demands
Even as Canelo basks in the glow of his latest triumph, new challenges loom on the horizon. The boxing world is abuzz with potential matchups that could further cement his legacy.
A rematch with Dmitry Bivol, the only man to defeat Canelo in recent years, is a tantalizing prospect. If Bivol can overcome the fearsome Artur Beterbiev in their upcoming light heavyweight unification bout, a second clash with Canelo could be one for the ages. The first fight saw Bivol outbox Canelo, handing him a rare defeat. A rematch would offer Canelo a chance at redemption and the opportunity to prove he can adapt and overcome a stylistic nightmare.
Then there's the intriguing possibility of a showdown with Terence Crawford, the pound-for-pound king of the welterweight division. Crawford, who was ringside for Canelo's victory over Berlanga, has made no secret of his desire to move up in weight and challenge the Mexican superstar.
"I feel like it's a legacy fight and I feel like it's a fight that I can actually win," Crawford said of a potential bout with Canelo. "I've always been a smaller guy. In every weight class that I ever competed in, everybody always said I was too small for this guy, too small for that guy, and I always been successful in the fight. Being bigger don't win fights. So my skills pay the bills and my skills got me this far."
A Canelo-Crawford fight would be a boxing purist's dream, pitting two of the sport's most skilled technicians against each other in a battle for supremacy. It would also offer Canelo a chance to prove he can handle an elite boxer with supreme skills, even if Crawford would be moving up in weight for the bout.
The People's Fight: The Clamor for Benavidez
However, there's another name on the lips of many boxing fans – David Benavidez, the undefeated former super middleweight champion known as the "Mexican Monster." With each passing fight, the clamor for a Canelo-Benavidez showdown has grown louder.
"Benavidez is the fight the fans want to see," says Jose Ramirez, a boxing trainer from Los Angeles. "He's young, he's undefeated, and he's got that Mexican style that would make for an all-out war with Canelo. It's the kind of fight that could define both men's legacies."
Social media has been ablaze with calls for the fight. One viral tweet read: "Canelo vs Benavidez. Make it happen. For the culture. For the fans. For boxing."
Benavidez himself has been vocal about wanting the fight. "I've earned my shot," he said in a recent interview. "I'm not afraid of Canelo. I respect him, but I believe I have what it takes to beat him. The fans deserve this fight."
For his part, Canelo has been noncommittal about a potential Benavidez bout. When asked about it in the post-fight press conference, he said, "I'll fight whoever my team thinks is the best option. I've never ducked anyone, and I never will."
This response has only fueled the debate among fans and pundits alike. Some see it as Canelo being strategic, while others interpret it as hesitation to face a younger, hungry challenger.
The Legacy of a Champion
As Canelo continues to etch his name in the annals of boxing history, comparisons to the all-time greats become inevitable. Is he the best Mexican fighter ever, surpassing legends like Julio Cesar Chavez and Salvador Sanchez? Has he already secured his place on boxing's Mount Rushmore alongside Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Roberto Duran?
These questions will be debated in bars, gyms, and living rooms for years to come. But what's undeniable is the impact Canelo has had on the sport. He's not just a fighter; he's a cultural icon, a source of pride for millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, and a global superstar who transcends boxing.
In an era where many bemoan the decline of boxing, Canelo Alvarez stands as a beacon of hope. His combination of skill, power, and charisma harks back to the sport's golden ages, reminding us why they call it the sweet science.
The Human Behind the Champion
Behind the accolades and the championships, Canelo remains grounded. Those close to him speak of a man dedicated to his family, passionate about giving back to his community, and always striving to improve.
"People see the glamour, the titles, the money," says his longtime trainer, Eddy Reynoso. "But they don't see the 5 AM runs, the grueling sparring sessions, the sacrifices he makes every day. Canelo's success isn't an accident. It's the result of relentless dedication."
This dedication extends beyond the ring. Canelo has established foundations to help underprivileged youth in Mexico, providing educational and athletic opportunities. "I remember what it was like to have nothing," Canelo once said. "If I can help even one kid achieve their dreams, then all of this has been worth it."
The Reign Continues
As the sun sets on another victorious night in Las Vegas, one thing is clear: the reign of Canelo Alvarez is far from over. The king of the ring still sits firmly on his throne, daring anyone brave enough to try and take his crown. And for fight fans worldwide, that means many more nights of boxing brilliance.
In the ever-evolving saga of boxing, Canelo Alvarez continues to write new chapters, each more compelling than the last. Whether his next opponent is Bivol in a high-stakes rematch, Crawford in a clash of pound-for-pound greats, Benavidez in a fan-demanded showdown, or someone else entirely, one thing is sure – the boxing world will be watching, holding its collective breath, as the redheaded kid from Guadalajara steps into the ring once more.
Long may he reign. But as the calls for new challenges grow louder, particularly for a showdown with Benavidez, Canelo knows that to remain on top, he must continue to prove himself against the best. The next chapter in his storied career promises to be as thrilling as the last.

David Morrell vs Alantez Fox - December 18, 2021
Here’s a talent to watch - Cuban boxer David Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs). An amateur standout who won gold at the Youth World Championships (as well as best boxer of the tournament), Morrell has the amateur pedigree you’d expect from a top flight Cuban prospect. But he’s also got youth and the killer instinct a lot of these Cuban guys lack when they finally turn pro. At only 24, he’s racking up quality early wins and doing it in violent fashion. He’s only gone 12 rounds once, in his third pro fight against Lennox Allen. Outside of there, he’s been getting his opponents out of there before the end of the 4th round.
Morrell is signed with PBC which means there is no shortage of 168lb talent for him to face. His next opponent will be Kazakhstan’s Aidos Yerbossynuly (16-0. 11 KOs) on Showtime this Saturday (Nov. 5). Fight should be a banger. Definitely worth tuning in for.

Post-AGT Appearance 1249: The Greg Hill Show WEEI fm 93.7 May 19
I honestly thought that an earlier chapter was on The Doug Gottlieb Show.  It might have been but I can’t prove it.  The real me has been quite poor the last 9 years.  I was writing down each new chapter in the middle of an old notebook.  The pages going forward met used pages going backwards.  It was a couple years before I bought a new notebook.  One page in the middle was not connected and is now missing, maybe destroyed.  Gottlieb is on the Fox Sports radio Network, about 400 stations including WSBM am 1340.
My agent would have decided I needed to do at least one more interview about basketball, and on a Boston station.  Boston lost game one Wednesday and he would decide it should be before game 2, Friday morning. Glenn Ordway retired and Lou Merloni left WEEI fm 93.7, so I would have ended up on The Greg Hill Show.  He is on 6 to 10 am eastern time, accompanied by Jermaine Wiggins.  I would be on in the third hour.
Hill: Welcome back to the Greg Hill Show.  I’m Greg hill, accompanied by Jermaine Wiggins, joining us now on the phone is Phil Cole of Phillip and Cole’s Variety Team.  Phil how are you?
PBC: Doing well, sir.
Wiggins: No need to be formal.
Hill: This is my sidekick Jermaine Wiggins.
PBC: Honored.
Wiggins: Whatapp.
PBC: Sigh.
Hill: Where are you this early morning?
PBC: I’m at the Oregon house, overseeing some construction.
Wiggins: Building a wall?
PBC: Yes, can’t be too careful anymore ha ha.
Hill: Well Phil, you went on record as saying you pick the Celtics to win it all this year.
PBC: Yes I did.
Hill: What prompted you to make it public?
PBC: I was doing an interview and it just slipped out.
Hill: Any regrets?
PBC: Yes.
Wiggins: Because they lost the first game to the Heat?
PBC: No, because I have to do more interviews to justify my prediction.
Hill: We know you’ve done this before with predictions about the weather and blue state-red state matchups.  Is there anything mystical about this?
PBC: No, I heard the Celtics got off to a record breaking start and figured they’d win.
Hill: That was the Bruins, and it didn’t help much.
PBC: I had a feeling that wouldn’t be enough.  Anyway those Canadiens of the 70s were just unstoppable and I don’t think there’s a team like that anymore.
Hill: No.
PBC: Shootouts don’t count anyways.  That’s not hockey.
Wiggins: Did you like it the old days with all those ties?
PBC: I didn’t like teams like the Blackhawks who played for a tie.  Still a tie is honest.  Now players can practice for one on ones.  It’s like the 3 pointer: exciting yes, but it’s ruined basketball.
Hill: Ha ha.
PBC: Do teams still use centers?
Wiggins: I hear ya.
Hill: Phil, the Celtics lost game one against the Heat Wednesday.
PBC: So I heard.
Hill: Do you change your predictions?
PBC: No, not til it’s over.  After a comeback like that you sometimes have a letdown.
Hill: You think they’ll come right back tonight?
PBC: You can’t count on 2 big comebacks in a row.  Besides, it’s not even the finals.
Wiggins: What about out west; you got any feelings about the Lakers and the Nuggets.
PBC: The nougat is the best part of a Milky Way Bar.
Hill: Ha ha ha ha ha.
Wiggins: Is there nougat in a Milky Way Bar?
PBC: You know ...Jermaine...answers like that are the reason I didn’t go into comedy until I was over 50.
Hill: Ha hahahaha.
PBC: I love it when they laugh and it’s absolutely true.
Hill: ha ha ha.
Wiggins: (Overlapping) Well, Phil, my friend’s cracking up here, so thanks for joining us.
PBC: Good, so long.
Wiggins: We’ll be right back on the Greg Hill Show.
Hill: Ha ha I’m sorry

Post-AGT Appearance 1280: Fox News @ 6 WAGA channel 5 November 27
Man of my Dreams would have been 5th last week. Canadian Wildfires would continue to sink. After visiting my in-laws in Trinidad my wife and I would have flown to Atlanta early Monday to join the procession at the viewing of Rosalynn Carter. Not feeling well, I would be using my walker and therefore separated from my wife in the disabled line. So no one would recognize me, but when my wife was conspicuously in line they would look for me. Some would find me.
Among the things that would be different if this was really happening, my agent would have gained a client from the staff at WAGA tv channel 5 in Atlanta. When he found her a better job things would be reassigned, including their coverage of this event. Reporter Tori Cooper would have been there, interviewing dignitaries as they left. My comments would be in the middle of a barrage of quick quotes from celebrities she found. It wouldn't be ready until the 6 pm news.
PBC: She was the last authentic first lady.
Cooper: What do you mean?
PBC: Since then we've had schemers, gold diggers and now a co-conspirator.

Tyson Fury KOs Deontay Wilder in Heavyweight Classic

Published: October 10, 2021
LAS VEGAS – “The Gypsy King” still reigns.   In an incredible back-and-forth that included five knockdowns and countless exchanges, Tyson Fury retained his WBC Heavyweight World Title and lineal crown with an eleventh-round TKO win over former long-time champion Deontay Wilder in an ESPN+/FOX Sports pay-per-view live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.   The UK’s Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) scored three knockdowns in all, the final two in the eleventh frame, sending the raucous crowd of 15,820 into a frenzy.   “Like the great John Wayne said, iron and steel, baby,” Fury said. “I give God the glory for the victory. [Wilder] is a tough man. He took some big shots tonight. And I want to say that if it wasn’t for SugarHill, America and Detroit’s own, I wouldn’t have gotten through that fight tonight.  He said, ‘get your jab working, big guy, and throw that right hand down the middle.  That's how the big dogs do it.’”     “I did my best, but it wasn’t good enough,” said Wilder afterwards. “I’m not sure what happened. I know that in training he did certain things, and I also knew that he didn’t come in at 277 to be a ballet dancer. He came to lean on me, try to rough me up and he succeeded.”   Fury got off to a hot start in the first round, landing quick one-two’s while Wilder worked the jab to the body. A hard right toward the end of the round punctuated it for Fury, as did another in the second.   The action heated up in the third when a big Fury right sent Wilder tumbling to the canvas. The game slugger from Tuscaloosa, Alabama rose to his feet, surviving the follow-up until the bell rang moments later.   With Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs) on unsteady legs in the fourth, Fury pounced, looking to finish him off. But just when it appeared that the fight was about to end, the “Bronze Bomber” uncorked a perfect short right followed by another, driving Fury to the mat.   Fury made it to his feet but was down again moments later when another Wilder flurry floored him. The bell rang seconds after he got up.   Wilder started strong in the fifth, blasting Fury with more rights. The “Gypsy King” maintained his composure, digging to the body in close quarters.   The inside work slowly wore Wilder down. He was dropped again in the tenth from another Fury right and then a third and final time in the eleventh via a crunching right cross. Referee Russell Mora mercifully rescued the brave warrior, ending the fight at 1:10 of the round.   “It was a great fight tonight, as good as any trilogy in history,” said Fury. “October 9, 2021, will go down in history, I hope. I always said I was the best in the world and he was the second-best. Don’t ever doubt me.  When the chips are down, I will always deliver.” In the co-main event battle between two unbeaten heavyweights, Frank Sanchez (19-0, 13 KOs) scored one knockdown on his way to a comfortable, 10-round unanimous decision win over Efe Ajagba.   Sanchez used his superior boxing skills to keep the hard-hitting Ajagba (15-1, 12 KOs) off-balance for the entire fight. The “Cuban Flash” displayed his power as well, flooring Ajagba with a hard right in the seventh. A follow-up left hook which landed a tick after Ajagba’s knee hit the canvas   Ajagba made it to his feet and survived the round but never seriously threatened on his way to the first defeat of his career.
Sanchez said, "I knew I was going to win all the rounds because I’m much better than him technically. I knew that if I connected, he would fall and he did fall. My game plan was always to frustrate him and go in for the attack." Helenius Stops Kownacki Robert Helenius was even better against Adam Kownacki this time. In a rematch of their March 2020 slugfest which Helenius won via fourth-round TKO, Helenius battered Kownacki throughout to induce a stoppage at 2:38 of the sixth round.    “I expected [this win] because, what does he have?” Helenius said. “Don’t get me wrong. He’s a good brawler, but I’ve been fighting brawlers for 20 years. I know how to deal with them, even if they are hitting me low or behind the head. That doesn’t bother me.”   Helenius used his height and length to box in the first, working the jab up and downstairs and briefly buckling Kownacki with a right toward the end of the stanza.    Kownacki came alive in the second and third, throwing punches in bunches but earned a warning for two low blows that sank Helenius to his knees. The “Nordic Nightmare” took over from that point on, bloodying Kownacki’s nose and closing his left eye with thudding power shots.    The steady hammering continued until the sixth, when Kownacki landing another low blow. Referee Celestino Ruiz examined Kownacki as he warned him and decide to halt the action.    “Right now, I want to go home to my family,” Helenius said. “I’ve been away from them for four weeks. Then we can worry about what’s next.” Anderson KOs Tereshkin Jared “Big Baby” Anderson 10-0 (10 KOs) continued his rapid rise up the heavyweight ranks, stopping veteran Vladimir Tereshkin (22-1-1, 12 KOs) at 2:51 of the second round.   “I was a little anxious in the opening round,” Anderson said. “My first pay-per-view card and all that. But I settled in and gave a great performance. I practiced what my coaches preached. On to the next one.”   Anderson dominated from the opening bell, landing at will. In the second, a series of well-placed power shots drove Tereshkin toward the ropes where Anderson unloaded on his defenseless opponent until referee Kenny Bayless mercifully stopped the fight.   “I got great work in the gym with Tyson Fury,” Anderson said. “Iron sharpens iron. Shout out to Toledo, my home. I hope I made the fans back home proud.” In other action: Rising super middleweight Edgar Berlanga (18-0, 16 KOs) survived the first knockdown of his career to remain unbeaten, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Marcelo Esteban Coceres (30-3-1, 16 KOs).   Berlanga controlled the first half of the bout, flashing his prodigious power which ultimately closed Coceres’ right eye shut. Coceres began opening up in the sixth, catching Berlanga with a stiff left hook. He continued to enjoy pockets of success despite being outgunned.   Coceres’ best moment came in the ninth, when he countered a Berlanga left with a beautiful overhand right. Berlanga crashed to the canvas but the Brooklyn, New York gamely rose to his feet, pressing the action until bout’s end.   Rugged southpaw Vladimir Hernández (13-4, 6 KOs) registered the finest victory of his career, outworking former unified super welterweight world champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams (27-3-1, 16 KOs) to win a 10-round split decision.    Hernández won on two cards by scores of 97-93 and 96-94 respectively while a third card read 96-94 for Williams.   Williams got off to a strong start, countering the aggressive Hernández with well-timed counters and opening a cut over his right eye. Hernández never stopped coming forward, utilizing a dedicated body attack to gradually wear down. The non-stop assault culminated in a big 10th round for Hernández, who rocked Williams with a straight left that frame. The round was the margin of victory for Hernández.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez (8-1, 4 KOs) picked up the most significant win of his young career, using his southpaw stance to befuddle the previously undefeated Orlando “Capu” Gonzalez (17-1, 10 KOs) over 10 rounds in a featherweight contest. Scores were 99-91 2x and 97-93.
Featherweight prospect Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington had a spotless professional debut, shutting out Texas native Cesar Cantu (3-2, 1 KO) by identical scores of 40-36. Heavyweight upstart Viktor Faust (8-0, 6 KOs) knocked down Mike Marshall (6-2-1, 4 KOs) twice  and finished off the Connecticut native in the third round.

Y’all think PBC paid Corona for that ad? Seems to be the only advertiser they have.
