Another thing that's been on my mind for a while...ever since reading this post, it's got me thinking...maybe Beroba isn't the ONLY similar example
Looking back...while Geats definitely the show that has the most villains you hate, at the same time...uh...and maybe this is a personal opinion, looking back...completely ignoring side content like movies, the show itself has some of the most boring villains in the entire franchise. For me, they range from okay at best to "Yeah you really suck". It's a shame because there are some good ideas that can be worked but they're either trying to do too much or some of these villains aren't properly fleshed out or built up.
Plus I feel like the show also has some of the most ONE DIMENSIONAL or UNINTERESTING villains ever, either they only have a singular quirk that makes them unique (Niram with his realism shtick or Jitto and his obsession with bad ends), a singular notable personality trait (Beroba being a sadist), or they are just nothing villains with no depth that you don't give too shits about (Samas, Suel [Tbf, I like the idea of him being the mastermind. Idk, something definitely could've gone better] and again, Jitto) or they're completely forgettable. (Samas again and Archimedel, bet you forgot those two even existed and I don't even blame you if you did. I would be the same in this case)
We also already talked about how some of the villains in the show got some of the most half-baked redemptions ever that were forced down our throats like with Buffabuttface, Kabuto Wannabe, Neon's sperm and egg donors, and to a lesser extent that no one talks about Niram (but he got killed off pretty quickly that it won't take too long for that sudden change of heart to sink in anyways)
But anyways, nevermind the fact some of the show's villains have forced underwhelming redemptions...while the show has some of the right ideas for it's villains, (the DGP staff and hell even audience and sponsors, the jyamato, the ideas for Azuma, Daichi, Beroba, the Kurama parents, and hell even the government was secretly in cahoots with the whole DGP until they cut off ties with it when wishes are no longer granted but that's quickly brushed aside) I oddly feel like looking back that this is the show ultimately came out with some of the most uninteresting villains ever as I feel half of the villains in the show I feel are either one-dimensional and depthless, (not a very good idea when you have villains that you don't intend to make as one-offs. Speaking of which, Da-Paan definitely should've stayed as a one-off like Mary) nothing, or completely forgettable and unmemorable.
Yeah I agree with this. Most of the villains are at their core just... horrible people with no compelling reason to be horrible except that they're bored of their long, boring existences.
Takahashi literally picked the least interesting and least sympathetic reason for his villains' evil, and it gets tiresome very fast. To the point that all you feel is relief when they get offed and irritation when the next villain is almost exactly the same except they express their horribleness in a different way (e.g. Beroba's sadism, Kekera's manipulativeness, etc)
It's basically Isaac from Saber all over again, just multiplied several times with the only difference being those quirks you mentioned for the more prominent characters.
