Possible Dune 2 spoiler 🤷
I totally didnt notice that Chani used a blue scarf to tie her hair. When i saw that scarf in her hand in the third act I was wondering what flag that represented. It was Chani's own 'flag'. The implications of that!

A devout Roman Catholic until the day he died, Jim Nabors had always been God-fearing but, ‘Jim had drifted away from his faith at some point in his adolescence,’ so reported TV Radio Mirror, September 1966. He stopped attending church services and wandered about aimlessly through his teen years without any religious affiliation. Guilt-stricken for having turned his back on his parents’ sacrifices, he wanted so desperately to find God, but could not find Him within the walls of Protestant Christianity, of which he obtained no immediate spiritual satisfaction. His parents, who believed in the importance of weekly church attendance but did not believe in imposing a particular faith upon their children so long as they maintained a sense of God in their lives, readily blessed him to carve his own path, to let him find God through his independent and trying spiritual journey, apart from Methodism. ‘Yet, a grim depression gripped him… His heart was empty, too, with an emptiness that needed more than human love and fulfilment.’
His eldest sister, Freddie, was the first in her family to convert to Roman Catholicism when she married into an Italian-American family. His sister’s conversion only mildly influenced his decision—his sister, who was a member of Sylacauga’s then-only Catholic church, encouraged him to sing in the choir for a Christmas pageant during one cathartic holiday. ‘I’m not Catholic,’ he hesitated, but the local Catholic priest eased his worries by welcoming him with open arms. That priest was the son of a Syrian Jewish father and a Lebanese Christian mother, also a former Methodist, Father Mac Paul Abraham. Nabors cited, ‘He changed my life.’
Upon his return to Sylacauga one winter evening, Nabors quietly approached Father Abraham with a special request to convert him. The Father strongly advised he take instruction in Roman Catholic studies. Through sheer dogged determination to welcome God back into his life, he completed weeks of instruction during breaks from filming The Andy Griffith Show, attending Bible study, and taking up night courses in scripture and Latin, too. Some would say he studied to such a degree of obsession that it’s a wonder he didn’t quit acting to become a priest. In the mid-’60s, during a show hiatus from Gomer Pyle, Nabors wanted to be closer to God, and closer still. He found Him again in a Catholic Church in California. ‘For from another direction life suddenly took on meaning,’ he relayed. ‘I’d taken to slipping into the back of St Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Hollywood, just to listen to the Mass.’ Ultimately, it was the prolific Los Angeles Reverend, Paulist Father Ellwood ‘Bud’ Keiser who converted him. Now spiritually uplifted and purified, he felt one step closer to God, and more loved and accepted than he ever felt before. ‘I repented and if my heart was truly contrite, He showered me with mercy and love and forgiveness. God set me free.’

I can't reblog it for some reason, but regarding a thread about how awful Mao is and how his policies killed a hundred billion people, I think this is significant.
---
DETROIT — Another country that once had an addiction problem—one that lasted for almost 200 years and involved an incredible 25 per cent of its population—is China.
Today China is virtually drug‐free— and the methods the Chinese used to eradicate their addiction problem might well offer methods we could use to achieve the same results.
China was forced into addiction by the Opium Wars. Contrary to popular belief, these wars—from 1839 to 1842 —did not originate because China wanted to export opium. They began when China resisted England's demand to import opium in exchange for Chi nese products—mostly tea, silk, and porcelain. China lost these wars, and among other indignities was forced to exchange its goods for opium. As a result it became a highly narcoticized country, a victim of ruthless Western economic and political policy. By 1850 an entire fifth of the revenue of the British Government of India — the source of opium — came from Chinese consumption of this drug.
Obviously to enlarge the market for opium, China was forced to create a huge number of addicts. And it did.
In October of 1949 the People's Re public of China was proclaimed. With in a year the Communist Government instituted a comprehensive program designed to eliminate this threat to the nation. All evidence indicates that by 1953 the problem of narcotic drug abuse was practically eliminated.
One important factor was the changed ideology of the young people —no new supply of addicts was forth coming. The changes in outlook in cluded a redefinition of the nation and its youth, of their worth and role. In rural areas this new definition was based on land distribution; collective farming; new educational, social, and vocational opportunities; and the elec tion of local councils. In the cities it took the form of nationalization of commerce and industry, full employ ment, worker control, and the end of foreign domination.
This total ideological transformation of the younger generation was accom panied by the reintegration of Chinese society through small street commit tees that offered cultural leadership.
Equally significant in the Chinese drive to eliminate narcotic addiction were its methods of plugging the source, China is 80 per cent rural, and an unknown but significant part of the land had been turned into poppy cul tivation. The first major economic and political mass campaign of the Gov ernment was land reform, and this aim was coordinated with elimination of poppy growth. Distribution of land from large landholders to landless peasants was accompanied by the need to convert the opium cash crops to badly needed food crops. Today China produces enough opium to meet its medical needs, but no more.
Smuggled opium was still a source of the drug, and China acted to stop this supply with a policy of “carrot and stick.” Leniency was recom mended for employes and workers of opium traffickers; but heavy penalties existed for those controlling the traf fic, manufacture, or growth of opium.
China's attitude toward the individ ual reformed addict was one of good willed congratulations, and represents another important reason why the nar cotic problem was overcome. The re habilitation of opium addicts began with their registration. Arrangements by city‐wide antiopium committees for addict rehabilitation included treat ment to break the habit at home, in clinics and in hospitals.
At every stage of personal rehabili tation the ideological motivation was stressed. Given China's attitudes, this ideology was strong on political, so cial, and economic information. But the important thing is that the anti drug campaign recognized that the de sire and will of the addict is ultimately the controlling factor of addiction. China's policy was not simply to de prive a person of drugs, but to replace the need for narcotics with a forceful, national commitment. Equally signifi cant, the former addict was fully ac cepted back into Chinese life without official stigma or prejudice.
Naturally, many questions have to be answered about the total success of the Chinese experience. Is there an addict population living in labor camps or prisons because of failure to re habilitate? Do the rehabilitated addicts all function as useful members of Chi nese society? To what extent would addiction be a problem in China if its internal and border controls were less stringent? Does traditional Chinese medicine offer useful ideas about ad diction treatment?
---
Wikipedia puts the census count in 1950 at 546,815,000, and a quarter of that is 136,703,750. So about that many people saved from opium addiction by the Communists.
I wonder if that's the reason the West wants to focus so much on the famine.

Obehla ma v chodbe a až priam hrdinsky odomkla moju izbu.
Tak pred kým si teda zamykám svoju techniku?
A v neposlednom rade všetky moje prstene ktoré zabúdam nosiť, pretože kvôli nechutne (ale vlastne veľmi čistej horskej) siričito-vajcovej vode ktorú v Reyku máme, si ich musím dávať dole. Dlho by biele nezostali.

Persuasion (Carrie Cracknell, 2022)
Cast: Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Richard E. Grant, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Henry Golding, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Nia Towle, Yolanda Kettle, Lydia Rose Bewley, Edward Bluemel, Afolabi Alli. Screenplay: Ron Bass, Alice Victoria Winslow, based on a novel by Jane Austen. Cinematography: Joe Anderson. Production design: John Paul Kelly. Film editing: Pani Scott. Music: Stuart Earl.
Persuasion is not as bad as I'd heard. I knew it had been described as a kind of mashup of Bridgerton (non-traditional casting) and Fleabag (breaking the fourth wall), and that Austenites were appalled. There are two ways to adapt a classic novel to film: follow it as faithfully as you can, reproducing the substance of the story and the milieu in which it takes place, or use the story as a springboard for a modern adaptation -- e.g. the translation of Emma into Clueless or of Pride and Prejudice into Fire Island. Carrie Cracknell's Persuasion falls somewhere in between, taking the bones of the Austen novel and its Regency setting, and viewing them through a contemporary sensibility. It doesn't work here, but it might have. Armando Iannucci came closer with his Dickens adaptation, The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019), which also used non-traditional casting (including Persuasion's Nikki Amuka-Bird) and has a 21st-century sensibility clearly operating throughout. Iannucci may have succeeded in part because he didn't go as far as Persuasion's screenwriters in mixing today's casual speech with the author's period dialogue. Jane Austen's contemporaries would never have referred to former lovers as “exes,” for example. Persuasion is a misfire, but it's often fun to watch.

In DUNE 1 you know how there’s that kisses-and-dies vision Paul gets with his first hit of spice? Well, it would be such a cool reversal if, in DUNE 2, Chani has a kisses-and-dies dream*, where she shares a romantic kiss with Paul under water and he dies right away, in front of her eyes. Because water is to Chani what the desert was to Paul ; submerging one’s self in water like that would be a completely unfamiliar concept to Chani. I dont think Fremen even have a word for rain or swimming; I’m certain they dont have the word ‘drowning’ coz Stilgar comments on it in one of the books. Also, given how the Muaddib brings more water to the tribe - yes, it’s processed blood - it could have all sorts of meanings! Kind of a weird relationship between life, death, and water.
* Mind you, I dont mean a vision, just a dream. [Btw dont know who to credit for the pic.]

#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article
