I'm so grateful that my parents took us on family vacations every summer growing up. We usually went back to south Jersey to visit family but we did take an occasional excursion elsewhere. I loved being copilot, road Atlas in hand, to help guide my father, not that he didn't already know the way. Though GPS navigation can be very convenient, there is nothing like the feel and smell of a paper map! Just picking it up triggers a flood of memories. ~ Matteo

She took the less winding path, as her destination culminates somewhere unknown. The stars have guided Astesia here, haven't they? Part of her wishes to believe in far-fetched tales of old, while the more logical side took into account all the twists and turns her papermap provided. Either way, this seems like a place of refuge. A coffee shop? Some sort of establishment? Mayhaps. But better play it safe, for now.

"Excuse me? Is this a place where I can grab some coffee and rest a bit?" The Liberi spoke out at last, her voice nary a wisp on the wind.

The voice drew Kengou from the quiet that Aeyuni was wrapped in. His gaze rose to meet the woman that spoke, a warm smile on his face. "Of course. Is there any specific blend of coffee you prefer?" he moved behind the counter to gather a clean up for her, waiting for her specified order.

Road MORE taken

Summer 2017

“Disney, watch my kids.” is not a phrase I say often or lightly.

The day had been a glorious adventure, complete with the Chaco ranger swearing my kids in with “eat my veggies and never high five a cactus!”

Excellent.

Once out of Chaco’s north side, I turned south on a road not labeled either in real life or the grey line on my atlas, towards Grant, through a no-cell-phone-service steepe. 80 miles and not a whole lot of gas for mistakes and the side roads weren’t labeled. “The road MORE taken” is the choice today, Mr. Frost.

While Disney distracted my kids from the “Where are we?” and the “Are we there yet?” questions, I studied each intersection for gravel ever so slightly more displaced and hoping each time it was THE atlas’s grey road.

We weren’t lost. We just weren’t on any map I had available Granny.

I drove on.

The gas station in Grant looked beautiful to my eyes when we turned in.

MAPS! Love my paper maps. . Easy to tell what I’m researching and thinking about as far as destinations when you see which map books I have out. . The DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer map books pretty much set the standard when they started publishing the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer In 1976. It was their first product, and I’m tickled that Swiss company @Garmin, who bought DeLorme in Feb 2016, has kept the original cover for the Maine Atlas, while all other have the new cover. . DeLorme went on, of course, to develop the inReach, which set the standard for survival communication gear and is why Garmin bought the company. . I’ve owned and used several copies of the Maine Atlas over the years, starting when it was first published over 40yrs ago. The whole series is highly recommended. The back covers show how each state is divided up in pages for quick ref. . The Backroad Mapbooks from @backroadmapbooks are the smaller but equally impressive Canadian version and have proved indispensable in researching upcoming planned adventures. Highly recommended! . Last in the pic is my 2018 copy of The Milepost from @themilepostofficial, THE Bible of North Country Travel. Indispensable. Thorough. Recommended! .
