High level opening and welcoming remarks
Ms  Aida  Awel  welcomed  participants  on  behalf  of Mr.  George  Okutho, Director,  ILO  Addis Ababa, and also moderated the session. The welcoming and opening remarks were made by four key representatives of the Employers association, Trade Unions, the International labour Organization and the Government of Ethiopia, ably represented by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.
Mr. Josphat Kahwema,President of the Employers’ Confederation of Zimbabwe, suggested that Social Partners seek mutual gain outcome: ‘’Business seeks better returns on investments, Labour seeks decent jobs and Government seeks more income from taxation to fund service delivery  to  the  voters’’.According  to  him,  accelerating  the  pace  of  the  elimination  of  child labour can only be the outcome of a deliberate decision to promote massive inclusive economic growth. He proposed that  this  be  tackled  at  international, sub  Saharan  Africa, regional  and country levels. In sub Saharan Africa, FOCUS Economics estimates average economic growth rates  for  Sub  Saharan  Africa  at  1.3  for  2016  improving  to  an  estimated  2.7  for  2017.The population growth rate in Sub Saharan Africa was last measured at 2.73 in 2015 by the World Bank. He pointed out that this mismatch between economic and population growth rates had driven  and  accelerated  the  poverty  that  fuels child  labour.“In  most  of  our  economies, competitiveness  is  constrained  by under performing  national  institutions  and  inadequate infrastructure, both of which require time to remedy. The lowest hanging fruit is to ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship in a way that benefits all concerned’’, he added. In his view, ILO has been very influential in entrepreneurship development in projects such as Training for Rural Economic Empowerment (TREE)that boosts the local economy in a win-win relationship. He concluded  that  this  is  a good way to accelerate the  elimination  of  all poverty side effects, especially child labour.
Mr.  Emmanuel  Nzunda,  Assistant  Secretary  General  of  the Organisation  of  African  Trade Union  Unity  (OATUU),  made  it  clear  that  child  labour  exists for  different  reasons: people accept  it  and  make  excuses  for  it; the international  community  allows  it  to  exist; global demand for cheaply produced goods means that suppliers have to find the cheapest labour force  possible  and  often  times,  this  means  children  are  forced  to  work;international legislation  and  conventions  seeking  to  end  child  labour  have  not  been  taken  seriously  or enforced; and not enough has been done to end it.He also pointed out that most incidents of child labour and forced labour took place in the informal economy (both rural and urban) and in illicit activities. As for modern slavery, he referred to the Global Slavery Index of 2016 which  indicated  that  the  estimates  of  modern  slavery  in  Sub-Saharan  Africa  accounted  for approximately 13.6 percent of the world’s total enslaved population. ‘‘Despite  the  recent achievements in the development and implementation of measures against child labour and forced labour, the progress is slow compared to the magnitude of the problem. In sub-Saharan Africa progress has stalled–this is very disappointing’’.He argued that trade unions had been most effective in their efforts against child labour when they had been part and parcel of wider social movements fighting for social justice. ‘‘Trade union organizations, like minded civil society organizations, employers’ organizations and  governments  should  forge  alliances  and  work towards the abolition of child labour and forced labour in a concerted and collaborative way. Therefore, we fully support the Global alliance 8.7 that is aimed at working together to end child labour and modern slavery’’, he concluded.
Mr. Aeneas C. Chuma, ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, started by  acknowledging  the  presence  of  the host,  the  Honourable  Minister  of  Labour  and  Social Affairs of Ethiopia. He also acknowledged the presence of senior representatives of the ILO’s tripartite constituency from across the Africa region, including from Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic  Republic  of  the Congo,  Malawi,  Nigeria,  South  Africa,  Tanzania,  Zambia  and Zimbabwe. He emphasised the need for Africa, with an estimated 1 out of 5 children in Africa engaged  in  child  labour,  to  have a clear roadmap to tackle the problem of child labour and forced labour at all levels –from household, to community, to city, to national and international levels. He  argued  that  with  an  estimated  3.7 million  African  men,  women  and  children are still trapped in forced labour, and working under coercion, largely in the informal economy. He emphasized that the African continent is in urgent need of practical and effective solutions to combat  forced  labour,  including human  trafficking  and  modern  slavery.  After  recalling  the context in which Target 8.7 was adopted and Alliance 8.7 created and launched in New York on 21 September 2016, he pointed to the need for an active involvement of all parts of society –governments, workers’ and employers’ organisations, the private sector, civil society, community organisations,  faith-based  groups,  academia  and  those  working  in  the  arts  and media. Mr. Chuma concluded by saying:‘‘In order to advance Alliance 8.7, we can no longer do business as usual. We cannot enact the same policies or implement the same programmes and  expect different  results.  Alliance  8.7  calls  for  rethinking  the  way we  work  and  engage across  the  board.  And  this  is  why  we  are here  in  Addis  Ababa  this  week!  I  welcome  this consultation as a forum to provide concrete recommendations for taking forward Alliance 8.7 in  Africa  and  to  strengthen  the  capacity  of  participants through  exchanges  of  experiences between countries’’.
Mr.  Abdulfatah  Abdullahi,  Minister  of  Labour  and  Social  Affairs of  Ethiopia, welcomed participants to Ethiopia. He highlighted the efforts  of the  Ethiopian  government  to  address child labour, including the development of a National Action Plan on the elimination of the Worst  Forms  of  Child  Labour  and  its  implementation  in close  collaboration with  Social 7Partners. He also mentioned the ratification of International Conventions and measures taken to ensure the consistency of domestic laws with the international instruments adopted by the country. The Minister expressed the firm commitment of the Government of Ethiopia to work in cooperation with all partners to achieve target 8.7 and join partners in the Alliance 8.7 and declared the meeting open.

Young People’s Despair Deepens as Covid-19 Crisis Drags On (NYT) Life seemed promising last year to Philaé Lachaux, a 22-year-old business student in France who dreamed of striking out on her own in the live music industry. But the onset of the pandemic, leading to the loss of her part-time job as a waitress, sent her back to live at her family home. Now, struggling to envision a future after months of restrictions, Ms. Lachaux says that loneliness and despair seep in at night. “The pandemic feels like a big stop in our lives,” she added. “One that puts us so low that I wonder, ‘What’s the point?’” With curfews, closures and lockdowns in European countries set to drag into the spring or even the summer, mental health professionals are growing increasingly alarmed about the deteriorating mental state of young people, who they say have been among the most badly affected by a world with a foreshortened sense of the future. Across the world, they have lost economic opportunities, missed traditional milestones and forfeited relationships at a pivotal time for forming identity. “Many feel they’re paying the price not of the pandemic, but of the measures taken against the pandemic,” said Dr. Nicolas Franck, the head of a psychiatric network in Lyon, France. In a survey of 30,000 people that he conducted last spring, young people ranked the lowest in psychological well-being, he said.
For Better Health During the Pandemic, Is Two Hours Outdoors the New 10,000 Steps? (WSJ) Will two hours in the park become the next 10,000 steps? As people spend more time indoors, a mountain of scientific research says spending time in nature is critical to health and increases longevity. That means being in fresh air, under trees and away from cars and concrete—on a regular basis. And, no, the Peloton doesn’t count. “There’s an urgent need emerging in science and at the gut level to increase the nature experience. This field is just exploding,” says Gretchen Daily, a professor of environmental science at Stanford University. The benefits have been clear to scientists for some time, but the pandemic has made the matter more urgent. The physical and emotional toll the virus has taken, especially in urban areas with little green space, has galvanized doctors, researchers and others to tap into nature’s therapeutic effects. Spending time in the woods—a practice the Japanese call “forest bathing”—is strongly linked to lower blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones and decreased anxiety, depression and fatigue.
Winter Storm Brings Icy Temperatures and Power Outages Across U.S. (NYT) A coast-to-coast winter storm swept from Oregon and Washington to the Southeast on Sunday, part of a frigid weather pattern that has created record low temperatures in Minnesota and a 100-vehicle traffic pileup in Texas and that is now producing dangerous conditions across much of the country because of heavy snowfall, perilous ice and dangerously low temperatures. The National Weather Service said early Monday that at least 150 million Americans were under ice or winter weather advisories. Hundreds of thousands of people were without power. Trucks slid off highways and cars piled up on ice-coated roads. As the storm continued to intensify, officials urged residents to brace themselves. “The time to prepare for this storm was yesterday,” the National Weather Service in Texas said in an ominous warning issued on Sunday.
Power cuts hit 4.7 million users in northern Mexico after cold snap (Reuters) A cold snap knocked out power for 4.7 million users in northern Mexico early on Monday, triggering a scramble by authorities to restore service and bring in extra fuel, with parts of the neighboring United States also hit hard. Frozen pipelines and a squeeze on natural gas deliveries from Texas roiled several northern states, though by midday, service had been restored to 58% of the affected supply, Mexican national electricity grid operator CENACE said. CENACE urged people in the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas to curb power usage. The freeze also knocked out electricity for more than 2 million customers in Texas.
UK opens quarantine hotels, pushes on with vaccine drive (AP) Britain’s newly established quarantine hotels received their first guests on Monday as the government tries to prevent new coronavirus variants from derailing a fast-moving vaccination drive that has delivered more than 15 million shots in ten weeks. Passengers arriving at London’s Heathrow Airport were escorted by security guards to buses that took them to nearby hotels. Zari Tadayon, who flew to Heathrow from Dubai and was taken to the Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel near the airport, said she had hoped she would be allowed to quarantine at her home in London. She said she felt “horrible” about the enforced 10-day hotel stay. Under the new rules, residents of the U.K. and Ireland arriving in England from 33 high-risk countries must stay in designated hotels for 10 days at their own expense, with meals delivered to their door. In Scotland the rule applies to arrivals from any country.
Dragnet, planned law boost French fight of Islamic radicals (AP) More than three dozen police officers descended on a small private school in Paris, blocked the 92 students inside their classrooms, took photos everywhere, even inside the refrigerator, and grilled the school director in her office. “It was like they were moving in on a drug deal,” Hanane Loukili, the director and co-founder of the MHS middle and high school said, recalling the Nov. 17 scene. Loukili didn’t know it then, but a team from the Cell to Fight Radical Islam and Community Withdrawal, or CLIR, had arrived for an inspection. The dragnet sweeps schools, shops, clubs or mosques to rout out “radicalization.” Within a week, a shaken Loukili informed students their school was shutting down. Loukili insists she is no radical, but such operations illustrate the extent of French efforts to fight extremism as lawmakers prepare to vote Tuesday on a bill aimed at snuffing it out. The proposed legislation is intended to re-anchor secularism in a changing France, where Muslims are increasingly visible and Islam—the nation’s No. 2 religion—is gaining a stronger voice. The legislation, expected to pass the first critical vote, will also expand and facilitate the crackdown.
Russia’s rising poverty fuels political discontent (AFP) Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, crowds have grown at the Martha and Mary Convent in central Moscow. The white-walled women’s monastery houses one of Russia’s best known charities that gives out free food parcels, among other projects. Many of the visitors who queue for packages containing buckwheat, sugar, and tea are retired but there are also those who have lost their jobs or had their salaries cut. The coronavirus pandemic has delivered a new blow to Russia’s stagnating economy, which was already chafing under Western sanctions, low oil prices and weak corporate investment. Observers say that rising poverty, falling incomes and lack of tangible government support during the pandemic are fuelling discontent with President Vladimir Putin’s two-decade rule and strengthening the opposition. Russians’ real disposable incomes have been falling for the past half-decade, and contracted by 3.5 percent in 2020, while the cost of basic foodstuffs surged.
Military Imposes Full Grip on Myanmar in Overnight Crackdown (NYT) With the night in Myanmar came the terror. In cities across the country on Sunday evening, armored vehicles moved in, along with trucks filled with soldiers in camouflage. Security forces fired rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas at a crowd. Troops surrounded the houses of government workers who had dared to join a nationwide civil disobedience campaign. Politicians, activists and journalists fled, turning off their phones as they disappeared into the shadows, hoping to outpace the men coming after them. On Saturday evening, the State Administration Council, the Orwellian name chosen by the coup-makers, announced that it was taking away basic civil liberties, allowing for indefinite detention and for the police to search homes with impunity. Arrest warrants were issued for veteran democracy activists who had already spent years in jail. Late into Saturday night, residents of Yangon and Mandalay, the two biggest cities, watched in horror as unidentified men lit fires to spook neighborhoods and ran. Police raids netted protesters and politicians alike. The day before, prisons had been emptied of 23,000 inmates in a mass amnesty. There is now room to spare to incarcerate people in what for decades has felt like a prison state.
Sudan says Ethiopian forces crossed border, raising tensions (Reuters) Ethiopian forces crossed into Sudanese territory in an act of “aggression”, Sudan’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, marking the latest flare-up in a long-standing border dispute. “Ethiopia’s trespass into Sudanese land is an unfortunate and unacceptable escalation, which could have dangerous repercussions on security and stability in the region,” the Sudanese foreign ministry said in a statement. Ethiopia has also accused Sudan of crossing into its territory. Clashes erupted late last year between Sudanese and Ethiopian forces over Al-Fashqa, an area of fertile land settled by Ethiopian farmers that Sudan says lies on the Sudanese side of a border demarcated at the start of the 20th century.

Africa records two million phishing attacks in second quarter of 2020
New Post has been published on https://newscheckz.com/africa-records-two-million-phishing-attacks-in-second-quarter-of-2020/
Africa records two million phishing attacks in second quarter of 2020
Kaspersky analysis has revealed that phishing attacks are becoming increasingly more targeted.
A number of new tricks have also been found – from HR dismissal emails to attacks disguised as delivery notifications.
As a result of such tendencies, security solutions have detected 2,023,501 phishing attacks in South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
These and other findings are documented in Kaspersky’s new spam and phishing in quarter two of 2020 report.
Phishing is one of the oldest and most flexible types of social engineering attacks. They are used in many ways, and for different purposes, to lure unwary users to the site and trick them into entering personal information.
The latter often includes financial credentials such as bank account passwords or payment card details, or login details for social media accounts.
In the wrong hands, this opens doors to various malicious operations, such as money being stolen or corporate networks being compromised. This makes phishing a popular initial infection method.
South African users have been influenced the most by this type of threat: there were 616,666 phishing attacks detected in 3 months.
It was followed by Kenya (514,361), Egypt (492,532), Nigeria (299,426), Rwanda (68,931) and Ethiopia (31,585).
Phishing is a strong attack method because it is done at such a large scale. By sending massive waves of emails under the name of legitimate institutions or promoting fake pages, malicious users increase their chances of success in their hunt for innocent people’s credentials.
The first six months of 2020, however, have shown a new aspect to this well-known form of attack.
As Kaspersky analysis has indicated, in Q2 2020, phishers increasingly performed targeted attacks, with most of their focus on small companies.
To attract attention, fraudsters forged emails and websites from organizations whose products or services could be purchased by potential victims.
In the process of making these fake assets, fraudsters often did not even try to make the site appear authentic.
Such targeted phishing attacks can have serious consequences (https://bit.ly/345ifge). Once a fraudster has gained access to an employee’s mailbox, they can use it to carry out further attacks on the company the employee works for, the rest of its staff, or even its contractors.
The news agenda, following the COVID-19 outbreak, has already influenced the “excuses” fraudsters use when asking for personal information.
This included disguising their communications with unsuspecting users as:
Delivery services. At the peak of the pandemic, organizations responsible for delivering letters and parcels were in a hurry to notify recipients of possible delays.
These are the types of emails that fraudsters began to fake, with victims asked to open an attachment to find out the address of a warehouse where they could pick up a shipment that did not reach its destination.
Postal services. Another relatively original move used by fraudsters was a message containing a small image of a postal receipt.
The scammers expected that the intrigued recipient would accept the attachment (which, although it contained ‘JPG’ in the name, was an executable archive) as the full version and decide to open it.
The Noon spyware was found in mailings such as these examined by Kaspersky researchers.
Financial services. Bank phishing attacks in the second quarter were often carried out using emails offering various benefits and bonuses to customers of credit institutions due to the pandemic.
Emails received by users contained a file with instructions or links to get more details. As a result, depending on the scheme, fraudsters could gain access to users’ computers, personal data, or authentication data for various services.
HR services. The weakening of the economy during the pandemic in a number of countries caused a wave of unemployment, and fraudsters did not miss this opportunity to strike.
Kaspersky experts encountered various mailings that announced, for example, some amendments to the medical leave procedure, or surprised the recipient with the news about their dismissal.
In some attachments, there was a Trojan-Downloader.MSOffice.SLoad.gen file. This Trojan is most often used for downloading and installing encryptors.
“When summarising the results of the first quarter, we assumed that COVID-19 would be the main topic for spammers and phishers for the past few months.
And it certainly happened. While there was the rare spam mailing sent out without mentioning the pandemic, phishers adapted their old schemes to make them relevant for the current news agenda, as well as come up with new tricks,” comments Tatyana Sidorina, security expert at Kaspersky.

The report titled “Africa Logistics and Warehousing Outlook to 2023- By Countries (South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Namibia and Botswana), Mode of Freight (Road, Rail, Air, Sea and Pipeline), By End Users and by 3PL, By Type of Warehouses” provides a comprehensive analysis of the Logistics market of Africa. The report covers the overall size and future outlook of the freight forwarding and warehousing market along with a snap shot on the courier and parcels market along with a number of segments for each. The competitive landscape of the warehousing and freight forwarding segment is also present. The same has been concluded with analyst recommendations.
Africa Logistics Market Overview and Size: The African logistics market has seen a steady growth between 2013 and 2018 accounting to a single digit CAGR during this period. The continent is extremely rich with natural resources and increase in mining of coal has helped the market grow. The major exporting partners include United States, China and Japan. Infrastructure has been problematic for Africa and China has helped tremendously to curb the issue. China has made a number of investments to improve the roads, ports and railways which has helped in the growth of the market. The Freight Forwarding Market contributes the most towards the overall logistics market of Africa.
Africa Freight Forwarding Market: Contract logistics is known as the driving force for the freight forwarding market and is opted frequently. The market has experienced a growth in its study period resulting in a single digit CAGR. Food and beverages has been the market’s driving force as most of the consumer spending is towards the same. Road freight was observed to be the most preferred mode of transportation due to the development in the road infrastructure; followed by sea and rail freight. Future trends in the market focus on Africa having less trade with developed nations and more with developing nations.
Africa Warehousing Market: The warehousing market of the continent is at its growing stage. The food and beverages market is the dominant user of the warehousing market in Africa. Open storage are preferred the most as compared to closed and cold storage warehouses. East Africa will lead in the demand for industrial space, which is set to grow at six per cent annually in Ethiopia, and at 5.1 percent and 3.6 percent in Uganda and Kenya, respectively. In response to the growing demand for warehousing, Africa North Africa is expected to experience a gradual growth over the next 10 years. Egypt and Morocco currently have higher demand estimates than East and West Africa in terms of size but are set to grow at a slower rate
Competitive Scenario: Most of the African countries have few dominant international freight forwarding players in the market. The lack of infrastructure and capital make the local players resort to third party logistics, which is estimated to be the same in the future. Some of the major companies include Bollore Africa Logistics, Kuehne Nagel , DHL, Maersk, DSV Panalpina , CEVA Logistics and DB Schenker .The industry is at a growth stage in terms of parameters such as technology, efficiency and service portfolio but not pricing as the logistic cost is too high leading to contraction of manufacturing sector in the GDP.
Country Profiles
Botswana: Botswana being a landlocked country is highly dependent on road for the transportation of their goods which also has the highest revenue percentage towards the overall freight forwarding market. The market is dominated by international players and has experienced a single digit CAGR during 2013-2018.
Namibia: Namibia is considered to have one of the best road networks in Africa which also helps the road freight to dominate over the market. The country offers dry port facilities to Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and other landlocked countries. New container terminals are built on Walvis Bay which would help double its capacity in the future.
Tanzania: Amongst the countries taken into consideration the market of Tanzania has experienced the maximum growth owing to a double digit CAGR between 2013 and 2018. The market is highly concentrated with international players and the international freight dominates. The new local companies entering the market haven’t been able to adopt the new technologies and resort to third party logistics.
Uganda: Being a landlocked country multimodal transportation has gained importance in the country. The Gulu town in Northern Uganda is to get a new USD 8.8 million trade logistics hub with money provided by the EU. The warehousing market experienced an increase in demand which could be attributed to introduction of warehouse receipt system, increase in the industrial/business parks, initiatives by United nations and decline in rental rates for warehouses.
Kenya: Kenya has achieved rank 61 in the East of Doing Business Index and rank 68 in the Logistics Performance Index. Road Transport dominates the freight forwarding market due to the monopolistic demand of road transport for delivery in remote regions, to the landlocked neighboring countries, and for the last mile delivery. There are approximately 120,000 standard warehouses in Kenya, with more than 1000 warehouses in Embakasi itself. Some of the major warehousing companies include Bollore, Agility and DSV.
Nigeria: Increasing Nigerian local food products in the country has triggered the demand for logistics and warehousing making food and beverages the leading end user for freight forwarding. Due to infrastructural challenges, big market players prefer to outsource services to local transporters and focus on their core competencies. The Lekki free trade zone project was established focusing on the development of logistics and warehousing center in the southeastern part of Nigeria.
South Africa: The FMCG, Retail and Automotive industries in the country played a significant role, especially for the domestic market, in the growth of freight forwarding market in South Africa. The country is the most developed in terms of infrastructure and techniques being used. The warehousing sector experienced a slow growth due to the economic slowdown and political instability in the country. The major companies include Value Logistics, Bidvest Panalpina and Access Freight International.
Future Outlook and Projections: The overall logistics and warehousing market of the continent is expected to grow by a single digit CAGR from 2018 to 2023. Growth in intra-regional trade and projects like AFCFTA has helped in the same. The largest trigger of the logistics and warehousing market in the long run is the development of infrastructure and construction sector. This has caused a spree of developments in the country which has increased the trade and warehousing activity in the continent. Investments in advanced technologies solutions such as autonomous logistics, real-time tracking and automation in order to provide an improved customer service will also boost the market of Africa.

[ Blessed July with Happiness ] I was over excited when this parcel delivery by @beanbrosco arrived in my hands last week! Beautiful roasting skills portrayed by this new Hungarian coffee roaster - @awakencompany Loving the distinctive aroma of both coffee (Ethiopia Aricha & Kenya Kamviu AA) after grinding Amazing combination of fruity • citrus • caramel, with floral and long aftertaste from Ethiopia Aricha Kenya Kamviu AA gives me a different impression from the other Kenyan coffee that I've tasted. The lingering combination of apricot and lavender is so yummy! #antmanualbrew #beanbrosco #awakencompany #letstalkcoffee

So according to BBC breakfast today my generation (those born between 77 and 83) are called the Xennials - apparently we forged the way between the old & new and got the best of both worlds! We experienced a childhood of playing outside, children's TV, Mattel toys and the first home computers & consoles. Our generation saw the original Transformers, Care Bears, My Little Ponies and He-man. We adopted Cabbage Patch kids with squished faces, strange names and autographed bottoms. We had the Broom Cupboard, Going Live and Wacaday. We appreciated that we had 2 hours of tv that was just for us at the end of the school day. We sang the tunes to Willy Fogg and Dogtanian and thought that Cities of Gold would never end. We thought that Dynasty was super glamorous and Byker Grove was gritty. We all wanted to live on Ramsay Street and we cried when Scott and Charlene got married. (We secretly knew all along that Plain Jane would be pretty once she took her glasses off.) We watched Degrassi Junior High, read Sweet Valley High and wished we went to school in America. We got excited when the tv trolley was wheeled into our classrooms and had one BBC master computer that we got to use as a treat...usually to make a robot go round a maze or something equally as exciting. It didn't matter though because the BBC Master used floppy discs which were a thousand times faster than the cassettes we used on our Commodore 64s at home! We remember the countdown clock that the BBC showed before their school programmes & can remember being genuinely scared whilst watching 'Dark Towers.' The last day of school was games day and someone always brought in Screwball Scramble which nobody could ever complete! We could create our own games without staring at a computer screen. We played tag, denio 123 and British Bulldog (before the teachers banned it!) In the summertime a sprinkler could provide hours of fun. We didn't watch YouTube videos of people unboxing toys - we played with our own! A 'Choose your own Adventure' book allowed us to choose our own destiny - especially when we could go back to page 22 to avoid being killed! We learnt how to make plans without the need for WhatsApp, group messenger or email. We chatted for hours to our Friends on the land line & got yelled at by our dads when the phone bill arrived! Our friends were actual people that we knew - not online followers. We received real cards on our birthdays not text messages or exploding marshmallows and had to write actual thank you letters to our Grandma's rather than sending a message online. The postman used to come twice a day and there was no online shopping so the delivery of a parcel usually meant a present! Oh and we all really really wanted a Mr Frosty for Christmas but never ever got one! We took proper photos on actual cameras and had to wait for them to be developed before we could see how awful we looked. A 'selfie' was taken at arms length and usually came back from Truprint with an 'over exposed' sticker on it! There were no filters to disguise those spots & red eyes but on the plus side there was less embarrassment as the images would not be posted on social media for all the World to see! We had to use an actual book for our high school homework but discovered the joys of 'Ask Jeeves' as we did our A-levels - that was if our Mum wasn't on the phone hogging our dial up internet connection. At university we typed our essays & dissertations on a word processor as there were no laptops. We queued up to use the computer suites but spent most of our time sending long emails to other friends at uni rather than doing any work! We owned mobile phones that could not fit in your pocket and could only text people on the same network as you. We spent hours playing Snake on our Nokia 3310s. We all knew someone who had a pager but we could never really see the point in them! We grew up watching the greatest films ever made; Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Grease and Gremlins. We all watched Karate Kid and believed we could be a champion too because we could 'wax on...wax off.' We watched Dirty Dancing and hoped that one day we would have a holiday romance with a Patrick Swayze look a like. We watched the Back to The Future trilogy and worked out how old we would be in 2015 which seemed so far away. We grew up with an awareness of the World that our parents did not have. We giggled at 'Position of the fortnight' in More magazine and all read 'Forever' by Judy Bloom, but were still innocent enough to be shocked by Zammo's drug addiction on Grange Hill, PJ being shot in the eye with a paintball gun and the uncensored lyrics to 'Don't stop' (wiggle wiggle) by the Outhere Brothers. And as for the naked man playing tennis on the beach in the early sex education videos we watched at school - we were totally traumatised!! We also grew up to be more considerate of others. We remember the original Band Aid single and all the subsequent re-releases (even the dodgy 1990 version featuring Bros & Sonia) We can recall the horror we felt when John Craven showed us images of starving children in Ethiopia. We were the Blue Peter 'Bring & Buy sale' generation raising money for wells in Africa & orphans in Romania. We were fearful when we heard about the hole in the Ozone layer and embraced the 'No animal testing' mantra of the Body Shop. We saw the first televised lesbian kiss on Brookside, watched Mark die of AIDS on Eastenders and saw the demise of the old-school racist, homophobic & sexist comedians. We remember when a 10 penny mix up bought you 10 (or more!) sweets! When a MrFreeze cost 5p and Curly Wurlys were really long! We know the excitement of opening a box of cereal to retrieve the free gift hidden inside. We remember proper milk bottles on the doorstep & Barr pop where you got 20p back when you returned the bottle. We can never hear the words 'Accrington Stanley' without replying 'Who are they?' In a dodgy scouse accent. We didn't wear the most stylish of clothes & we never posted photos to share our daily outfits. Tammy Girl was the only place to shop till you fitted into Topshop sizes. A gift basket from Body Shop was the ultimate birthday gift and we slathered ourselves in Dewberry, White Musk, Exclaimation & Impulse believing that one day a stranger would actually stop to give us flowers on the street just like the advert. We made the move from vinyl to cassette and Cd. The Walkman was the ultimate accessory and we taped the top 40 every Sunday desperately trying to avoid the DJs voice! We read Smash Hits and Look In and tried to learn all the words to 'Joe le Taxi' because Vanessa Paradis seemed so sexy & aloof. We hoped one day that a boyfriend would present us with a mix tape but in the meanwhile we made our own. We boosted our cd collections by repeatedly subscribing to Brittania Music. Of course we now all have iTunes but we still can't bring ourselves to throw away our cd collections! We went to university before tuition fees and bought houses before prices became inaccessible. We watched Big Brother when it was good and cheered when Craig ousted Nasty Nick. We saw people become famous because they were talented - not just because they appeared on a reality show. We were old enough to be out partying on Millenium Eve and were relieved that the World did not succumb to the Millennium bug after all; no planes fell out of the sky and no nuclear bombs were launched by accident! We travelled more than our parents did thanks to the emergence of budget airlines, teletext holidays, inter-railing, Club 18-30 and Twentys. We thought we were so independent but still wanted our dads to drive us to the airport & still had to give our parents 'three rings' to let them know we had arrived safely. So yes, to all those who like me were the babies of the late 1970s, the children of the 80s, the teens of the 90s and the young adults of the new millenium, I think we did get the best deal. More technically savvy than our parents but experienced enough to know that social media & technology are not the be all and end all. To be honest I am pretty proud to be a Xennial - aren't you? http://ift.tt/2t37FoE
