Have you got your tickets for UV locked down? Maybe you are like me – tickets bought but not all other details finalised. Priorities, right? The most important consideration is to make sure we get to see RA on stage. Flight? Accommodation? Can be dealt with later. On the latter, I’ve had a few questions bts about hotel recommendations. Now, I do not want to presume better local knowledge than all the English/British fans. However, as a frequent visitor, and particular while I was still working for my London client, I was put up in hotel accommodation on many occasions. In that sense, I may have seen more London hotels than our actual London-based fan sisters *waves at Hariclea and tinyclanger and anyone else whom I am shamefully overlooking here* and can possibly make some recommendations.
A quick note on location and transport
My collection of Oyster Cards. Yes, I’ve had to buy several because I stupidly left mine at home… They give you a little wallet for safe-keeping when you buy yours.
All hotels are fairly centrally located – if you are a walker and do not mind 45 minutes walking, they would even be in walking distance of the city centre of London. Transport, on the whole, is not a problem in London. The tube is never far away. I recommend you buy a so-called Oyster Card upon arrival in London. This is a commuter card that you load credit onto. You can buy it at any (larger) tube station (ticket counter). You can get the £10 deposit back when you return the card before you leave London. You charge your card via the ticket machines located in every tube station. Paying for the tube is via flashing the card at the gates for entry and exit. A display at the gates will always tell you how much money you have left on your card. An Oyster card is a must, even if you only stay for three days. The difference in price between buying single tickets and using your automatic card credit, is significant: A single journey will set you back £4.90 whereas the Oyster card is £2.40!!! Also, the Oyster card has an automatic cap. That means you will pay a maximum of £8.20 (zones 1-3) versus single journeys or a daily travel card at £13.10 (zones 1-4)!!!
However, the best tip when it comes to London public transport, I received from local Hariclea: Bus fares are much cheaper than the tube. A single journey will set you back only £1.50. The daily cap for Oyster Card here is £4.50. So if you can, take the bus. Or walk, that is *my* personal tip. For a long time on my travels to London, I did everything by tube, thinking that London was a huge city and everything was very far apart. It took me 3 years to realise that Piccadilly Circus was only 250 meters away from Leicester Square! Doh. So make use of Google Maps and walk. You will be rewarded with a fantastic view of the city, too, because London treats you to a journey through all architectural ages in almost every street.
Fleet Street. From Tudor half-timbers to 1920s in 500 meters
Guylty’s Hotel Insights
I’ll give you a little review of all the hotels I have stayed at in the last four years. A caveat at the beginning. At least half of them were paid for by my client – and they didn’t skimp. I would not have paid £350 for a hotel room myself. My budget – even while still employed by them – would usually not stretch to that. However, I am including it here, too. Who knows, maybe you have a significant birthday/anniversary, or you want to treat yourself to an extraordinary London experience. Or maybe you just appreciate a lovely boutique hotel, just like I do. Where possible, I will add my own pictures – and occasionally even videos – for a little more insight into the hotel. Links to the hotel website under the name. In no particular order…
Pop!Thoza sneaks up on breakfast
The Rookery – my absolute favourite, but the above mentioned luxury option. Located in Farringdon, opposite Smithfield Market – a boutique hotel completely furnished with antiques and with every room looking different. Close to two tube stations, near the Barbican centre, too. It really looks like the photos on the website – or in my videos. Yep, I have three of them, just because the hotel was so beautiful, I had to document it every time. But I’ll only bore you with one of them. (If you want to you can see the other two if you click on my name on the video below!) This hotel has beautiful common rooms but no breakfast room. So if you want dinner, you need to eat elsewhere. Breakfast is available – but only served in your room. However, it was not any more expensive than in other hotels, and at the same time so good that I always set the alarm for two hours early so I could have long, leisurely breakfast in my fluffy bed before I went to work.
https://vimeo.com/133549399
Purple light show. Not sure what mood *that* is…
Citizen M in Southwark (Bankside) is completely at the opposite end of the style spectrum. Ultramodern hotel. Every room has a kingsize bed (no single rooms available) and lots of tech gimmicks. Has a fantastic entertainment offer with wide screen TVs in every room. You can operate different lighting scenarios with an iPad in the room, and the blinds are automatically adjusted depending on whether you have set the room settings on “romantic” or “business” 🤣. Located behind the Tate Modern, but still very central. I loved this place and stayed there a couple of times privately, too – my son called it the “cyber hotel” and specifically asked me to book us in there when I gave him a trip to London as a gift. He (age 18 then) even shared the kingsize bed with me – that was the price for being in the cyber hotel… Buffet style breakfast is available in the hotels bar area. I loved the cool style and design of this hotel.
The Park Plaza County Hall is also situate d on the Southern bank of the Thames. I was upgraded to a suite there – with a separate sitting room and a small kitchenette. Comfortable, modern, light-filled rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows. The kitchenette would be really useful if staying for a few days and trying to budget a little bit because eating out in London is expensive. It doesn’t mean you have to cook – but just having a fridge for a pint of milk for your cornflakes in the morning, would already save you a good bit of money. I did like this one very much and remember making a little video – can’t find it anymore, unfortunately. It is part of the Radisson chain, so good quality.
I slept on top bed – wanted the “young” feel
Z Hotel City Another very modern hotel, centrally located in Fleet Street. The rooms are very modern, but also fairly small. I had a room that was billed as a “family” room with two double beds. But even though the room was tiny, they solved the problem really well: One double bed was like an enclosed alcove (fitted with a big TV) while the second double was built on top of the alcove and you accessed it via small steps. The second double also had a TV screen. The drawback was that the hotel did not offer breakfast, and even though it operated a café next door, it did not provide a discount to residents. However, as you can see from the photo, this kind of room would really lend itself to sharing if you are coming with a friend. Share the costs – still get privacy. And style, too.
No real vines, that’s the graffiti on the wall!!
The Malmaison on Charterhouse Square. Another boutique hotel in Farringdon (like the Rookery above) (near Barbican), located on beautiful Charterhouse Square where you get London at its historic best: There is the eponymous Charterhouse from the 14th century, then there is Georgian architecture, the Victorian hotel building, and an Art Deco block of flats (which was used as location for Hercule Poirot’s flat in the Poirot TV series with David Suchet). Every room differently decorated – modern eclectic. The rooms were small but beautiful and all decorated differently. The first time I stayed there, I had an “inside” room with a kind of blind window into a lightwell. The room had really funky decoration with a graffiti-sprayed wall. Breakfast was not included but available in the basement restaurant – really nice, though.
Glimpse of room on the right. Bathroom had massive dimensions. Wheelchair compatible
The Premier Inn County Hall is probably on the affordable end of the scale. Centrally located, directly behind the London Eye and more or less directly on the banks of the Thames. The rooms were not particularly cosy or original, but clean, light and big. Probably more on the practical side. Prices are pretty good for London – and for the location. Breakfast available in the hotel – nothing special, but good price.
You can see what I had for breakfast
The Marlin Aparthotel was an affordable option when I took my mum to London last year. This hotel is fairly well connected, just behind Waterloo Station. In walking distance of the Old Vic Theatre and Westminster on the other side of the Thames. The rooms were bright and modern – and they came with a kitchenette. We ate breakfast in our own room every day and saved on another tenner for meals that way. This hotel is easily accessible by bus – which will also get transport costs down…
Lastly, The Grange Strathmore Hotel is the last hotel I stayed in when in London in April this year. The building is the former residence of the Earl of Strathmore (the Queen Mother’s father), and as such an imposing Victorian residence in a very pretty part of London. The room was small and looked out onto the mews at the back. Kensington is a very nice area for walking and looking at the grand white townhouses, but it’s not as central as the other hotels listed above. Also, I didn’t find the transport options quite as close as the other hotels.
So, here is an overview of the hotels and their relative location. It’s an interactive map – you can click on the markers and see which hotel it is.
That’s it for my own experience with hotels in central London. As I said – not necessarily the cheapest *thanks to my former employers*. I am sure there are other, if not better options available. If anyone has some recommendations, please add them in the comments! And for further questions – I’m delighted if I can answer, although I am sure that the resident Londoners are probably better equipped than I am.
Leaving you with a little London Lucas for good measure.

For those working with a tight budget, this article will help you out big time. Here are some tips and hacks to save money while enjoying your stay in London!
London Travelling Tips from Us to You
There are four easy hacks to remember to save some extra bucks: walk if you can, visit the free stuff, pre-order passes, and find the cheap but good-quality accommodations!
1. Get your legs working!
Buses and taxis are a few of the most expensive things in a travel budget. Rather than these two, you could opt for walking and cycling around the city for short distances. Getting into public transportation and tubes is another option for going long distances. You should take one of the  budget hotels in Kensington near tube station to save on commute while travelling in London.
2. Visit free top attractions.
Don’t limit yourself to paid entrances! London is packed with free places that will provide just as a delightful experience as the ones you’ve paid for. London is also famous for its remarkable picnic spots, which are absolutely free (just bring your food!).
You can also read: Top London Picnic Areas with a Mouthwatering View in Sunshine
3. Pre-order everything, including tickets and passes.
Visitor cards, passes, and tickets can save up to 50% of the original bill. Visitor Oyster cards are half cheaper than single-use tickets, and you can use them for food, drink, and various special discounts and offers.
Meanwhile, the London Pass will help you enter 60 (or more!) attractions for free if you want to visit London’s top attractions.
Online ticketing and passes may also be cheaper and save you from long queues, so you better check out on those too!
4. Eat, shop, and sleep cheap!
Chain, buffets, supermarkets, and cafes in London offer affordable food. Several food trucks that cook mouthwatering street foods are all around the city, and all you have to do is pick the truck that has the best menu that suits your palate!
For bargain shopping, all Londoner shoppers know that high street stores have affordable fashion choices, one of which is Primark. If you’re feeling sustainable, visit their vintage emporiums for cheap retro outfits!
Never forget about choosing a good accommodation and hotel too! Travelers and tourists can only enjoy their stay after a nice good night’s sleep and recharge in a hotel. Park City Grand Plaza London is Londoners best pick if you ask us about a hotel that can ensure you’ll sleep soundly for the night all in your budget. Check out for the best offers for this summer.
Ways and Nearest Tube to Reach
Tubes, a rapid underground railway system, is a famous transportation in London. It runs from Monday to Friday from 8:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the evening.
To travel using a Tube, you can check out their maps so you can navigate to everywhere in London. Their government website, https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/tube/, has most of the information you need to see the departures, route maps, and timetables for each station.
 Conclusion
Sure enough, we have provided the ultimate cheat sheet to save some pounds while you’re basking in the London lifestyle. No more empty bank accounts after a fantastic trip! Your memory and savings bank will surely be full after your stay in London.

– 14 November, 2017.

Facilitating public spaces and architecture for protest
Superhumanity e-flux newsletter
January 23, 2017
PAU
An open letter to the mayor of New York City
pau.studio
Content ends here
Dear Mayor de Blasio,
We truly appreciate your forceful defense of New York City’s most deeply held values. Your call for appropriate public demonstrations to protect our rights and freedoms is the correct response to the encroaching threat that so many New Yorkers now feel.
As more New Yorkers take to the streets in the coming weeks and months, we see a powerful opportunity, and an urgent need, to make strategic improvements to our public spaces—our civic commons—that would make these vital gatherings of free expression safer, more effective, and even welcoming to all New Yorkers who want to participate in civic action.
You have demonstrated your commitment to make our public spaces more accessible and equitable through Parks Without Borders at the Department of Parks & Recreation and the Mayor’s Office of Resiliency. The significant steps that you and NYC Department of Transportation have taken to enhance our public plazas, particularly those in high-need areas, are already paying dividends for free expression. On November 11, just three days after the election, the “Rally for Unity” in Jackson Heights’ Diversity Plaza drew hundreds of New Yorkers desperate for a locale in which to connect, and was followed by a successful letter-writing event. That same day, Avenue C Plaza in Brooklyn was the site of a powerful display of unity with Kensington’s Muslim community.
We recommend seven steps that your Administration can take to ensure that these events of free expression are welcoming and successful, as New Yorkers come together in greater numbers to celebrate and protect our rights. All of these steps will alleviate pedestrian congestion, and many will alleviate vehicular congestion.
Continue your support and funding for the public plaza program. New York City, in all five boroughs, now has dozens of mini-Union Squares. These plazas are redefining and re-energizing the tradition of peaceful demonstrations so central to New York City’s culture. Through your OneNYC Plaza Equity Program, DOT has resources to ensure that neighborhood plazas in high-need areas are safe and clean, and can function as platforms for civic engagement. For new immigrants and other New Yorkers feeling isolated and vulnerable by the current political rhetoric, these public spaces are crucial to free expression and camaraderie. Those New Yorkers need a local place to gather, one they can walk to, feel ownership of, and meet their neighbors in—while also feeling connected to their fellow New Yorkers gathering in Manhattan’s premier public spaces. It is critical that the City continue to nurture those connections and the places where they happen.
Expand space at popular protest sites. A number of popular protest sites are already chronically overcrowded, such as Columbus Circle, Midtown Manhattan, Union Square, Washington Square Park and 125th Street near the Adam Clayton Powell statue. Union Square, for example, could be greatly enhanced by following through on a 2010 plan to pedestrianize Union Square West. Also pedestrianizing University Place would be a bold step that could link Union Square and Washington Square Park, merging two vital public spaces into a permanent platform for open expression.
14th Street as key locus of public expression. Just as Times Square is a crossroads for so much of what New York City has to offer, 14th Street at Union Square is a modern and historic hub for free expression. Enacting the 14th Street PeopleWay plan, originally designed to accommodate post-L train shutdown congestion, would both open public space for gathering and pilot the best options for the coming transit situation.
Expand weekend street programs. Permanent expansions of pedestrian public space can first be tested with shorter temporary events that open streets on recurring weekends, similar to the successful Summer Streets and Weekend Walks programs. This network of civic spaces, alongside public plazas, become thus not only places for protest, but also places of ongoing and sustained community participation and engagement in the everyday, the very tenets of democratic action and community building.
Networked simultaneous citywide protest events. For major marches and protest events, it may be desirable to distribute the crowds at several locations instead of drawing everyone to a single crowded location. This approach, in addition to easing crowding, may yield greater turnout and increase safety by making participation more accessible for people in the boroughs, while highlighting these outpourings as true citywide phenomena. A large protest event, instead of taking place only in Manhattan, could be distributed citywide among a number of locations that draw New Yorkers from many surrounding neighborhoods to converge at local plazas. As illustrated in the accompanying map, an event that draws protesters to key locations in each borough (draft list below) could be much more impactful than an event that tries to draw people to one location. Lower Manhattan: Union Square. Upper Manhattan: Plaza de las Americas (Washington Heights) or the Adam Clayton Powell Office Building Plaza (Harlem); Queens: Diversity Plaza; Bronx: St. Marys Park and Fordham Plaza; Brooklyn: Grand Army Plaza, Myrtle-Wyckoff Plaza, Bushwick Inlet Park; Staten Island: Tompkinsville Park. The cooperative planning required to organize and publicize these events has the added value of fostering new relationships and social resilience across neighborhoods.
During major national events, like the Women's March on Washington that took place in Washington, D.C. on January 21, these hubs of local activism can be activated by residents to show solidarity with like-minded people elsewhere. New Yorkers should be able to be seen and heard during pivotal historic moments, even if not everyone has the time or money to travel great distances.
Facilitate mass bicycle rides. Since the 1970s, the bicycle community has played a role in supporting walking protests and bringing a needed diversity to all public gathering activities. That community has only grown in recent years, and mass bike rides are the natural interpretation of protest for people who regularly ride bikes. Encouraging police and/or community escorts to keep these rides safe and moving swiftly through traffic will have a positive overall outcome for Vision Zero, traffic calming and visibility, as well as the obvious effects of gathering and free expression.
Pedestrianize 5th Avenue Midtown. There would be no better symbol of the right to the city than to make people and free expression the priority on 5th Avenue. Opening the street and piloting solutions for better and safer traffic flow during the holiday season would be a critical test. During a period when there is extra pedestrian and vehicular traffic and severe crowding throughout the immediate area, a Vision Zero initiative would send a strong signal to show who you believe have rank: the people in the Commons, not the dwellers of the Penthouse.
We would like to meet with key members of your team to discuss these and other opportunities to enhance public expression during these challenging times. We could also consider starting an ad-hoc interagency task force that collaborates with our civic organizations, and potentially with community groups, as well. Our partnership can make our city a beacon to the majority of Americans who reject hate and embrace the exciting complexities of living in the most proudly diverse nation in the world. With your strong leadership, our model for civic spaces can promote the spirit of tolerance and the basic generosity that constitutes the core of what it means to be a New Yorker, and serve as a source of our collective strength.
