BERNIE WORRELL, Toronto, 1987
I became a Parliament-Funkadelic fan before I heard a note of their music. It was 1977, and I was reading my brother-in-law's copy of Rolling Stone, which contained a concert review of the P-Funk Earth Tour at the back of the magazine. I saw the costumes and the spaceship and despite Toronto radio being nearly completely P-Funk-free at the time, I thought this looked like it must sound amazing. When I finally found my way to hearing something by George Clinton and his band(s) - I think it might have been "Flash Light" but I'm not sure - I wasn't disappointed, and when I started taking photos I made it my mission to get a portrait of anyone who was involved in the P-Funk universe. First up, and quite without expecting it, was keyboardist Bernie Worrell.
I had, of course, seen Bernie Worrell as part of the extended Talking Heads filmed by Jonathan Demme for Stop Making Sense. P-Funk were on something of a hiatus in the '80s, so various members of the group were appearing in all kinds of situations, and Worrell showed up in Toronto as part of the Golden Palominos - drummer Anton Fier's art rock/indie supergroup. Worrell was born in New Jersey and was an accomplished musician, studying at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music before a meeting with George Clinton inspired him to move to Detroit and become part of the collective of musicians recording and touring as either Parliament or Funkadelic or both.
I shot precisely four frames of Bernie Worrell, who I nervously approached during soundcheck at the El Mocambo, a Toronto club, knowing that I only had a third of a roll of 120 film left in my Mamiya C330. The stew of influences I was processing as a young photographer included Francis Wolff's work on the covers of Blue Note albums, and while I might not have been able to explain it at the time, I was definitely paying homage to (or ripping off, depending on how you look at it) Wolff's work on records by John Coltrane, Bud Powell and "Baby Face" Willette. I'm not sure these photos - the whole of the shoot, as of this post - have ever been published outside my old blog. Bernie Worrell died of cancer in 2016.

Mothership Reaches the Hollywood Walk of Fame Stars
- George Clinton’s star is No. 2,769
An “emotional” George Clinton set the Mothership down on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to receive a star of his own.
The Parliament-Funkadelic bandleader received star No. 2,769 in the Jan. 19 ceremony at “the corner of Hollywood and George,” as Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis put it.
Some 200 musicians and singers have contributed to P-funk over the decades; too many for Clinton to name in his speech.
"Lots of them are here, lots of them not,” Clinton said in remarks carried by Billboard magazine. “But for all of them, I say, ‘Thanks and I’m blessed to be representing a bunch of funky mothers.’”
Kiedis called Clinton, who produced the Peppers’ 1985 Freaky Styley LP, a “friend, teacher, mentor, a father figure, a co-conspirator (and) instigator.
“I love George Clinton with all my heart,” he said.

William Earl “Bootsy” Collins (born October 26, 1951) career in music began playing bass for the legendary James Brown in the early ’70s. He later gained fame playing bass with Parliament-Funkadelic. Bootsy has made a name for himself as a skilled bassist and has interesting vocals. His voice goes up and down flowing through his abstract lyrics about, life love, and whatever Bootsy throws in. If his skills as a musician and singer-songwriter didn’t set him apart it would have to be his elaborate outfits and stage shows.    In the studio and on stage known to be a perfectionist making sure everything sounds just right He has collaborated with various artists like Snoop Dogg and RCP he will occasionally work with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic.In 1997,  Collins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is considered one of the leading names in funk Bootsy Collins to help set a tone for some of today’s hip hop, r&b, and pop music.

Lecture 11: Dig this, cool cats! George Clinton’s other funky jazz rock band, Funkadelic, took to the streets of New York City in 1973 to participate in a surreal promotional film for their song “Cosmic Slop.” Cosmic Slop was also the name of Funkadelic’s 1973 studio album that contained the song. Even though the album was not a commercial success upon release, it has since come to be regarded by music critics and historians alike as a funk/soul masterpiece. The delightfully bizarre music video/promotional film that went with the song spotlights Clinton and his band mates taking part in some genuinely inspired lunacy.
