Nem is nagyon tudom, hogy mit írjak erről magamnak (másnak, ha bárki olvassa ezt), de valamit mégiscsak kéne. Először is azt, hogy ugyan évek óta várok rá, és elég magas polcra helyeztem már előzetesen a fejemben, de ezzel együtt sem csalódtam egy kicsit sem. Másodszorra meg azt, hogy ez annyira így van, hogy meg is vettem a jövő évire az early bird bérletet, ahogy kitették.

Persze van ezen túl néhány dolog. Egyrészt a város és a közeg maga. Ha a fesztivál nélkül, csak úgy elmentem volna négy napra Utrechtbe valószínűleg akkor is feltöltődve jöttem volna haza, a vággyal, hogy minél előbb visszamenjek oda. Nem emlékszem éreztem-e ezt bármilyen másik városban (talán Münchenben, még inkább Dublinban?), hogy egy világ választ el onnan, itt tényleg minden működik, minden kis bolt, kajálda jó minőségű, szuperek a könyvesboltok, mindenki kedves, hogy miközben innen nézve már a magát nyitottnak feltételező ember agyára is rátelepedett ez az orbánista köd a hanyatló nyugatról, ott annyira természetesen lógnak a pride zászlók, öltözik úgy mindenki, ahogy neki jól esik, férnek meg egymás mellett a mindenféle etnikumok konyhái a holland sajtboltok és varázsgombákat áruló smart shopok mellett, hogy ez egy nap alatt a világ legtermészetesebb dolgának hat. (És azért persze nem vesztettem el a józan eszemet, tudom, hogy ez sem makulátlan, tudom, hogy éppen Hollandiában sem olyan nyugodt minden és mindenki, és legfőképpen azt, ami mostanra már természetesen felötlik az én fejemben is egy ilyen jólét láttán, hogy ennek azért milyen ára volt/van, ami a világ többi, kevésbé gazdag régióján csapódott/csapódik le.) Szóval röviden, ennek a fesztiválnak az erejét jelentős részben maga Utrecht adja, hangulatilag, kulturálisan, de minden bizonnyal anyagilag is, hiszen hol máshol van egy olyan gigantikus koncertközpont, mint a város pénzéből felépített TivoliVredenburg öt koncertteremmel?

De közben ha kell negatívumot említeni azért az mégis a túltelítettség, egyszerűen túl sok nagyon jó fellépő van, ami ugye first world problem, de elég fájó tud lenni az adott pillanatban. Persze nem biztos, hogy belőlem kell kiindulni, mert én tényleg legszívesebben egymás után végighallgattam volna Tirzaht, Brighde Chaimbeult a skótdudájával a Janskerk templomban és a pakisztáni Sanam avant-rockját a Tivoli egyik kistermében, de hát ha ez nagyjából egyszerre van, akkor egyet ki kell választani. Végül Tirzah lett az, nem bántam meg persze, de mivel ott végig maradtam, ezért csak a Sanamra kígyózó sor legvégére tudtam beállni, amit fel is adtam tíz perc után. És ez még csak a legelső nap, szombaton konkrétan volt egy olyan idősáv, amikor Caterina Barbieri (különleges live acttel a Space Afrikával) többé kevésbé egyszerre játszott az idei line up egyik legdögösebb fellépőjével, a fura funkos, hip-hopos, soulos B. Cool-Aiddel, a Bill Orcutt gitárkvartettel, Sydney Lowell spoken word művésszel, mindezt akkor, amikor Marta Salogni még éppen egy Pauline Anna Strom darabot dekonstruált a Janskerkben, és ezek közül egyikbe se hallgattam bele, mert a Moin éppen 20:00-ig zenélve robbantotta le a fejemet a nagyteremben, ami után kellett egy kis szusszanás, egy pisiszünet, és annak érdekében, hogy időben odaérjek a negyed óra sétára lévő helyszínen koncertező The Necks fellépésére inkább időben elindultam arra. Szóval tudom, hogy ez nem normális (bár mi a fenét jelent ez a szó egyáltalán?), hogy engem tényleg majdnem minden őszintén érdekel, amikor valaki kifacsar valami zenére emlékeztető hangsort valamilyen arra alkalmas tárgyból, vagy éppen a saját testéből, de nem egyszerű ez na. Viszont - viccen kívül - lehet gyakorolni a tudatosítást, és az elengedést. Amikor Nino de Elche hátborzongató koncertjéről éppen nagy elánnal elkezdtem átrohanni a pakisztáni Ustad Noor Bakhsh fellépésre, akkor pár perc után észbe kaptam, megálltam és inkább elsétáltam a Tivoliba, hogy ott emberi módon, kisebb szünetekkel megnézzek pár másik koncertet.

Szóval zeneimádóknak ez tényleg maga a kánaán, és biztos lehet úgyis csinálni, hogy az ember rohangál, mint egy bolond fel-alá, megnéz mindenből tizenöt percet és így lát negyven-ötven koncertet, de nem tudom ennek van-e értelme. Én végül meghúztam azt a szabályt, hogy hacsak éppen nincs semmi más fontos, akkor fél órát maradok valahol, így is bő húsz koncertet láttam, és hát csodálatos volt nagyjából mindegyik. (Kivéve a Witch. Ne menjetek Witch koncertre, szomorú az egész, hallgassátok csak a lemezeket.) Ha kell top akkor:

Nino de Elche: Ilyen nincsen, ilyet én még nem láttam soha. Amit ez az ember a testével művel az döbbenetes. Honnan jönnek ilyen hangok, hogyan jönnek azok a hangok? Csoda. Valami nagyon más világ.

Faiz Ali Faiz: Elchéhez hasonló, azzal a különbséggel, hogy erről legalább előzetesen valami elképzelésem volt, de amikor már bő tíz perce emelik és emelik a hangerőt, amikor már azt gondolnád, hogy ebben nem lehet több dinamikai váltás, ebben nincs még egy szint, de Faiz aztán kántál egy akkorát, hogy leszakad a fejed, és a többiek válaszolnak, akkor nem lehet mást csinálni csak nevetni örömödben, hogy ezt megtapasztalod, hogy ilyet is lehet, ilyen is van.

Nala Sinephro: Ez már azért emberibb volt, de a maga műfajában hibátlan. Persze a hárfa, és ez az egész spirituális jazz nagyon direkt dolog, de lehet azért ezt ihletetten és kevésbé érdekesen is csinálni. Sinephro élőben is tudja azt hozni, ami miatt a lemeze az egyik kedvencem volt. A mellettem a koncert előtt még faarccal ülő srácot tudom idézni, aki a végén csak annyit mondott nekem, meg úgy kifelé a nagyvilágnak: "Man, this was fucking phenomenal."

The Necks: A maga módján ez sem emberi, mert az is értelmezhetetlen, hogy Tony Buck dobos mintha a négy végtagjával négy különböző ritmusképletben játszana hosszú percekig, hogy mintha ez a három zenész anélkül, hogy egymáshoz szólnának, hogy akár csak egymásra néznének éreznék egymás minden rezdülését. Ezt is életre szóló élmény volt látni, néztem, hallgattam volna még tovább. De a fesztivál másik talán negatívuma, hogy itt nincs idő monstre koncertekre, senki se headliner, úgyhogy a Necks is takkra 60 perc után be is fejezte. (Mondanom sem kell óra, vagy bármi jelzés nélkül, egyszerűen valahogy mintha érezték volna, mikor telik le az idő, mikor kell lecsillapítani az általuk keltett hullámot. Mi mehet ennek a három embernek a fejében?)

Moin: Mint egy frissítő csobbanás, olyan volt ez a maga nemében egyébként nagyon okos, és szokatlan, de itt a fesztiválon egészen egyszerűnek és direktnek ható posztrock, poszthardcore, amit a Moin játszott. Semmi sallang, szűk egy órányi játékidő, fokozatosan kieresztett, a végére szépen mindent beterítő düh.

Dancehall Queen

The story of a downtrodden black lady who overcomes the difficulties and challenges of a violent patriarchal society is told in Dancehall Queen (1997) directed by Don Letts and Rick Elgood, the first Jamaican feature film to center on a working-class female protagonist. In the limited options available to working-class women, Marcia (Audrey Reid), a street vendor and lone mother of two, finds the dancehall as a place of possibility. Marcia is trying to escape the cycle of poverty and her reliance on men. Dancehall Queen employs the sensual display of the dancehall as the spark for Marcia's resistance to patriarchy, explicitly elevating her eventual renunciation of patriarchal customs and approaches to thinking that deem female needs as inferior to those of males. When it comes on to place, Dancehall Queen uses the erotic, sensual environment as the women is seen dancing and objectified to support the phallocentric society. However, this is the case for merely the start of the film. As this same place of sensuality driven by male desire is manipulated as liberation. This place, similar to the genre of dancehall is used as a means for the freedom of expression from women. As place is not a fixed entity, it is something that can be manipulated and transformed into something that it wasn’t before as Marcia shows this in Dancehall Queen. Marcia, along with her team, her friend Winsome, Miss Gordon (Pauline Stone Myrie), the dressmaker and, most important, her daughter, Tanya, helps her to embrace her sexuality and give voice to a formerly hidden and disregarded side of her and give freedom to be used as an example for other marginalized women to the patriarchy. So the concept on place in this film, represents liberation, in contrast to the social norm- the objectifying of women, place is used as a platform to allow women to defy this norm and be in control of their own sexuality. I give this film a rating of 9/10 :)

how do u think u are inspired by punk subculture and others like ska and alternatives... like i find it very cool and see u talk in ur blog, wanted to know more... do u have any recomendations? like films, books... anyway thanks have a nice day u r lovely!!

WOW big question with a big answer under the cut. lovely lovely elizabeth just did an interview w me for Berlin Art Link and i discuss punk & subculture & fandom in the context of my art practice and dissertation there!

 my dad brought me up on the music very young, little babby me in the car singing along to the clash and the specials....it’s always just been a part of how i see myself, and i struggled w it a lot more when i was younger, it didn’t exactly mesh with being a black preteen/teen in one of the Whitest parts of the country. i think it will always be an influence i carry with me thru fashion and music tastes, and it’s been really nice in the last 2 years to kind of rediscover that part of myself bc i stopped acknowledging it for a big long time. 

i am the most annoying defender of ska because The Internet has reduced this entire genre down to like...shitty third and fourth wave american ska which is ???? not even something i’ve ever really associated as ska, it’s so far removed. ska is a jamaican genre and it’s the precursor to rocksteady and reggae, and there’s a really interesting relationship between different subcultures in postwar britain who kind of transcend anti-black racism of the time to find common ground in black-british culture. a lot of that comes from ska - punk and skinhead culture have both been hugely whitewashed or misremembered by their more commercialised/infamous versions in the media, despite there being so much variance & nuance at the time, and when both were early in their incarnations they centred around ska and reggae. read: don letts, beautiful dreadhead brother/dj to the punks. my white dad introduced me to reggae bc he was punk, while my jamaican mum could not give a shit about it!! anyway i know more about 2-tone/second wave ska than the first bc i was obsessed w Ghost Town by the specials as a kid, and while writing my dissertation i realised how fantastic it is that was i was drawn to a genre that specifically marries black and white culture in britain through music, very audibly and visually too, and it’s just....overtly political while being outrageously fun....it’s very honest and timeless and now more than ever, it feels relevant. imo, ska was often hopeful/joyful (even if the lyrics weren’t necessarily) while punk was nihilistic. i think it’s also worth saying that british and american punk have very different histories and offshoots, even tho they happened at the same time and had many crossovers.

my recommendations, whew ok!

books: black by design - pauline black (AMAZING biography by singer of the selector, mixed race and adopted, i gasped so many times bc so many parts of this book reflected my exact feelings of discovering my own blackness, even tho our child & adolescent years were like...4-5 decades apart); lipstick kisses - greil marcus (very dense but mostly very interesting, altho it does go wildly off topic sometimes. comparing 20th century social history to medieval religious history etc. it’s wild. if u want an academic read about this is IT, the way he links the letterist & situationist international to punk is just *chefs kiss*....also in general v good commentary on how mass homogenous culture combined w a loss of true freedom via capitalism, eventually creates civil unrest like may 68 and punk.) and england’s dreaming - jon savage (the go-to history of punk, basically starting with malcolm mcclaren’s childhood and how his art school background combined w may 68 led to him & vivienne very consciously creating a stylised movement, but it rly covers a lot more than that)

more academic texts on punk: subculture, the meaning of style - dick hebdige (aka the very same bastard of I Love Dick); punk rock, so what - ed. roger sabin (this is a fantastic collection of essays on dif topics that u may not ever consider in relation to punk, but the ones on race, women, and commodity are fab...so good for solidifying the concept that punk existed beyond the sex pistols and was much more interesting than them too); i havent actually read any ska specific academic texts but i wld be interested to! also dayglo! the poly styrene story for my fave black punk leading lady

films & tv: this is england (of course...how i could i not...i implore u to watch the film and then each series bc the journey is spectacular & effortlessly shows how transient and changeable these subcultures could be as music and fashion and social circumstances change); farming by adewale akinnuoye-agbaje (big trigger warning for violent racism & internalised racism, so harrowing & worthwhile tho, i dont think it deserved the shoddy reviews it got...it rly undid me); dance craze by joe massot (2-tone documentary); sex & drugs & rock n roll (ian dury is great is often left out of punk conversations but he’s a big part of my childhood and stiff records was v influential to punk & post-punk)

just general good films abt subculture: northern soul (ive been going to northern soul nights since moving to london and the history is so interesting and i wish i could go back in time and BOOGIE my god it seems incredible....also see fiorucci made me hardcore, a video art piece by mark leckey); 24 hour party people; quadrophenia; the football factory (fun fact, my dad became a punk bc he didnt like football & was tired of being beaten up by footie fans lmao); velvet goldmine.

Nagy-Britannia csapatát tovább erősíti ez első brit szikh női súlyemelő, Karenjeet Jaur Bains Warwickból, aki a guggolásból egy perc alatt a legtöbbször kinyomott saját testsúly női rekordere. Kimberly Lester (UK) szintén több feladatból álló rendkívüli teljesítményét mutata be, a legtöbb elkapást fél perc alatt hat tárggyal, kézzel és lábbal zsonglőrködve.

KARENJEET KAUR BAINS (UK) - guggolásból egy perc alatt a legtöbbször kinyomott saját testsúly (nők) - 42

Karenjeet nem csupán az első szikh, aki Nagy-Britannia színeiben indulhatott sporteseményen, de ő az a rekorder, aki elsőként birtokolja a guggolásból egy perc alatt a legtöbbször kinyomott saját testsúly (nők) címet. Karenjeet napi 1,5 órán át edzi magát, heti 6 napon. Főállásban pénzügyi menedzserként dolgozik, de a rekord bemutatása előtt két hétig a nagy eseményre készült, edzett.

E mellett számos egyéb díjat is birtokol, többek között 2019-ben ő lett a Brit Nemzetközösség Súlyemelőbajnoka, képviselte Nagy Britanniát az Súlyemelő Európabajnokságon Litvániában. A családja a legnagyobb inspiráció és segítség számára. Karenjeet reméli, hogy hatással lesz a jövő nemzedékeire, és még több kisebbségben lévő nőt inspirál arra, hogy „törjék át az üvegplafont, és nyomot hagyjanak a sportvilág különböző területein.”

JASON AULD (UK) – egykerekűzés közben felemelt legnehezebb súlyzó – 68kg

„Kevesen kombinálják az egykerekűzést és a súlyemelést.” – mondta a rekorder Jason Auld. Szenvedélye középpontjában az egykerekűzés és a súlyemelés áll, így a 2020-as nagy lezárások alatt Jason azt a célt tűzte ki maga elé, hogy rekorder lesz, hogy ezzel vigyen újra rendszert az életébe. Nyolc, szigorúan edzéssel töltött hét után, amiben váltva volt a súlyemelés és az egykerekűzés, 2021. április 5-én Jason megdöntötte a rekordot. Jason szerepelt tévéműsorokban, reklámokban és fellépései is voltak. Állítása szerint nem őstehetség, és büszke magára, hogy kemény munkával érte el a céljait. Sosem hitte volna, hogy lehetséges, hogy az idei kötet bajnokai közötti szerepelhet.

ALVIN (SWE) – A LÓ, AMELY A HÁTSÓ LÁBAIN A LEGGYORSABBAN TETT MEG 5 MÉTERT– 16.70 másodperc

Alvin, a svédországi shetlandi póni – 16,7 mp alatt tett meg a hátsó lábain 5 m-t. Alvin 2009-ben került gazdájához, Pauline-hoz. Kezdetben nagyon félt az emberektől, ezért Pauline, hogy segítsen Alvinnak leküzdeni a félelmét, trükköket tanított neki, így növelve a magabiztosságát. Alvinnak tetszett ez a szereplés. Évek alatt tökéletesítette a hátsó lábon járást. A rekordra való felkészülés során a pozitív megerősítési technikát alkalmazták, így növelve Alvin erőnlétét. Pauline szerint elképesztő érzés, hogy Alvin bekerült a Guinness Rekordok könyvébe, de hozzátette, hogy „Mindig is tudtam, hogy egyedülálló teremtés.”

FLORIAN KASTENMEIER (DE) – A LEGNAGYOBB BŰVÖSKOCKA-GYŰJTEMÉNY – 1519 DB

Florian bűvöskocka-szenvedélye 2005-ben kezdődött, az első Rubik-kockájával, és hamar a rabjává vált a kocka általi kihívásoknak. Az immáron 1519 db-ból álló gyűjteményéből a legrégibb példányok a kedvencei, hiszen ezeknek, ahogy ő mondja „történetük és személyiségük” van. Bár Florian képes mindössze 45 másodperc alatt kirakni egy Rubik-kockát, mégis a sokszínű gyűjteményére a legbüszkébb, amelyben a klasszikus Rubik-kockától a híres emberek arcát ábrázoló darabokig minden megtalálható. Amikor megkérdeztük, hogy milyen érzés bekerülni a Guinness Rekordok könyvébe, azt válaszolta, hogy hihetetlen, hogy az egész világ látni fogja a gyűjteményét.

Celeste megszállottja a fitnesznek, korábban versenyszerűen gimnasztikázott, veterán Ninja Warrior Dél-Ausztráliából, aki az idei évben három rekordot is felállított. Legyen szó gimnasztikáról, hegymászásról, CrossFitről, futásról vagy éppen úszásról, Celeste célja, hogy az edzés szórakoztató legyen, és ez segít neki a stressz levezetésében. Minden rekordjára hetekig edz. Elmondása szerinte a legnagyobb kihívást a leggyorsabb 10 m-es kézen járás 10 kg-os medicinlabdával a lábak között rekord jelentette, de eltökélte, hogy sikerülni fog. A rekordokra való felkészülés mellett három munkahelyen is dolgozik, de emellett az is hajtja, hogy a jövőben a saját rekordjait is megdöntse. Szabadidejét imádott „nindzsa kutya pajtásával” tölti.

 A Hírességek Csarnoka olyan ikonikus Guinness-rekordereket állít a középpontba , akik saját rekordjaikon túlmenően is elképesztő teljesítményt nyújtanak. Idén a brit paralimpikon Ellie Simmonds és a zenei szupersztár Beyoncé (USA) is bekerült az arany szobába.

Eközben a Fiatal rekorderek kategória tagjai bizonyították, hogy az életkor nem akadálya annak, hogy a legjobb legyél. Hat elképesztő ifjúsági bajnokot emeltünk ki, többek között a 12 éves Abhimanyu Mishrát (USA), aki a legfiatalabb sakk nagymester, illetve Scarlett Chenget (CHN), aki a legnagyobb ajakírgyűjtemény tulajdonosa.

A Guinness World Records mindenki számára elérhetővé teszi, hogy rekorder lehessen. Szakértőkkel együtt munkálkodva létrehoztuk az új, fogyatékossággal élők számára elérhető kategóriát, ahol a fogyatékkal élő személyek is rekorderré válhatnak. Dan Mancina (USA) a látása elvesztése után újra megtanult gördeszkázni és immáron magának tudhatja a leghosszabb 50-50 grind gördeszkával (IS2) rekordere címet.

A főszerkesztő, Craig Glenday, idén ünnepeli a 20. évét a Guinness World Recordsnál, a 2023-as kiadvány a 21. könyve, mint főszerkesztő. Azt mondta: „Az elmúlt évben közel 40 000 rekordpályázatot dolgoztunk fel, hogy elhozhassuk Önnek a 2023-as Guinness-rekordokat. Az embereket továbbra is lenyűgözi az extrémitás, a végletetek. Fred and Rose West:

Frederick Walter and Rosemary Pauline were English married duo of serial killers and serial rapists. They killed at least a dozen young British girls, including several of their own daughters. I recently watched a documentary on them, and wanted to research them further.

Fred was born in Herefordshire, in a small town and was the second of six children. Fred stated that sexual abuse of various kinds was common in the household, mainly from his father, Walter Stephen West. He claimed his father has sexual relationships with his daughters, sexual abuse Fred and taught him bestiality.

His father would force him to engage in sexual acts with his sisters, one of which he impregnated, and his mother, who he had lost his virginity to. It’s also suspected that his mother started sexually abusing him at the age of twelve, though he never admitted to it. He was often physically punished for doing badly in school.

At the age of seventeen, Fred was in a motorcycle accident that put him in a coma for a week. Afterward, he got a bad temper and would often have violent bursts of anger. Fred hurt his head again two years after the accident, when he stuck his hand up a girl’s skirt and she pushed him down a fire escape. At nineteen, he was convicted of molesting a thirteen-year-old girl; he didn’t serve jail time as his doctor stated that he suffered from epileptic fits.

Rosemary was born in England in 1953; her household was troubled and abusive. Bill Letts, her father, was a schizophrenic who constantly  disciplined her siblings, her mother and Rosemary herself. Growing up, Rose was sexually abused by her father. She often got bullied as she wasn’t very bright, and a bit overweight; she responded to this by attacking the bullies aggressively.

As a teenager, she became more sexually active and was caught getting into bed with one of her younger brothers and sexually fondling him. With her father as her figure and with his rules, she was prevented from dating boys her own age, so pursued relationships with older men; one of them took advantage of her and raped her.

Her mother finally had enough of her husband's abuse, took Rosemary and moved in with one of her adult daughters and her husband. Rosemary started spending even more time with male companions. Later the same year, Rosemary, surprisingly, moved back in with her father.

Not long afterwards, Rosemary met Fred, who was twelve years older. Rosemary's father strongly objected to her seeing Fred and even threatened him. Rosemary became pregnant with his daughter, Heather, and took care of his children on her own. However, because of her temper problems and her resentment about caring for children who weren't hers, she often treated her stepdaughters badly.

In 1971, Rosemary apparently snapped completely and killed Charmaine, Fred’s daughter from his first marriage. After severing the body's fingers and toes, Fred buried it under their kitchen floor. Costello, Fred’s first wife, disappeared when she came looking for Charmaine. Her body was found with its fingers and toes cut off, so Fred is suspected to have been the killer.

Fred encouraged Rosemary to have sex with other men, both for money and for fun. In 1972, they had another daughter together, Mae West. To make room for their expanding family and Rosemary's business, they moved to 25 Cromwell Street, where they carried out their rapes and murders. Rosemary continued working as a prostitute from their home. Over the following years, she gave birth to seven more children; three were fathered by Fred. Another may have been conceived by Rosemary and her own father, who kept engaging in incest with her. The other three, who were of mixed race, were all fathered by her clients.

In 1972, Fred and Rosemary hired Caroline Owens to work for them as a nanny for their children. They kept making sexual advances on her, but she declined every time. In December, after they both unsuccessfully tried to seduce her, she tried to leave only to be held captive overnight. The next day, she was released. 

Over the next six years, they killed at least eight young women who made their way to 25 Cromwell Street. Lynda Gough, a seamstress the Wests knew personally. Carol Ann Cooper, who disappeared while walking home from a movie theatre. Lucy Katherine Partington disappeared from a bus stop while on her way home. She was murdered by Fred and Rosemary, who abducted her, held her captive for a week, raped her, tortured her and then killed her. 

1974 to 1979, five more women, Therese Siegenthaler, Shirley Hubbard, Juanita Marion Mott, Shirley Anne Robinson, and Alison Chambers, met the same fate. It's unknown if the Wests killed more over the following years. If they did the bodies weren't buried on their property. Some of the girls are known to have been abducted, raped, and then released.

While committing murders, Fred also sexually abused Anne Marie West, Heather West and Mae West. Fred disposed of the victims by burying them under the garage of the house or in the garden. The Wests were finally exposed in May 1992, when Fred videotaped himself raping one of his daughters. When she told her friends, one of them reported the Wests to the police. The investigating officer had heard of Fred while he was in a relationship with Rena Costello. Another girl raped by Fred came forward and the police obtained a search warrant. Fred was arrested for rape and sodomy of a minor and Rose was arrested as an accomplice.

Kivételes alkalom! Anla Courtis, a kultikus Reynols együttes alapító tagja, a zajzenei improvizáció egyik nagyágyúja Argentínából érkezik hozzánk. Az általa vezetett field recordings workshop metodológiáját így határozta meg: "Ahogyan a fotográfia milliók mindennapi életének része a világ minden táján, a hangfelvétel is növeli a szerpét a modern társadalmakban. Ebben az összefüggésben a műhely fő célja a terepfelvételek (field recordings) bemutatása és megvitatása különböző perspektívákból. A témák a következők: változatos fonografikus tendenciák, a hangzás lehetőségei, kreatív hallgatás és a hangfelvétel kifejező felhasználása. A kreatív session-ök azonban a gyakorlásra is összpontosítanak: a műhely a résztvevők aktív és állandó bevonását igényli, akiknek saját képességeik és érdeklődésük figyelmünk egyik fő célpontját jelentik. Az aktív részvételt igénylő gyakorlati feladatok elvégzéséhez a résztvevőknek legalább egy, bármilyen típusú hangrögzítő eszközt magukkal kell hozniuk: digitális felvevőt, tabletet, számítógépet, mini-discet, kazettát, mikrokazettát, DAT-ot, iPhone-t stb. A műhely zenészek, nem zenészek, művészek, szakemberek, hallgatók és minden érdeklődő számára nyitva áll. Órarend: workshop: 13-17h, prezentáció; Anla Courtis és a workshop résztvevőinek field recordings koncertje: 18-19h. *** Anla (Alan) Courtis 1972-ben született Buenos Airesben, gyermekkorát az elnyomó katonai diktatúra és a falklandi háború élményei is erősen meghatározták. Először gitározni tanult (apja hatására, aki ún. gaucho gitáros, azaz Argentin cowboy-folk előadó volt), majd pedig zongorázni. Zeneszerzést, zeneelméletet a Manual de Falla Városi Konzervatóriumban tanult. Ezzel párhuzamosan került kapcsolatba a korabeli Argentin acid- és pszichedelikus rockzenével. 1993-ban Christian Dergarabediannal és Roberto Conlazóval együtt Courtis megalakította a teljesen formabontó The Burt Reynolds Ensemble-t; amikor Miguel Tomasín is csatlakozott az együtteshez, Reynolsra változtatták a nevüket, amelyet a kultikus zenekar 2004-es feloszlásáig meg is tartottak. (Tomasín, aki hamar a Reynols "arca" lett, az experimentális zenei színtér egyik leghíresebb és legkreatívabb fogyatékossággal élő művésze is egyben.) A zene mellett Courtis kommunikációelméletből is diplomát szerzett a Buenos Aires-i Egyetemen, ahol mind a mai napig experimentális zenei műhelyt vezet (ép, de főleg fogyatékossággal élő fiatal zenészek számára). Éppen ezért Courtis zenei világának egyik legizgalmasabb, egyúttal meghatározó eleme a fogyatékossággal élőkkel (főleg Down-szindrómásokkal) és az épekkel közösen kialakított univerzális experimentális zenei nyelv.   Az elmúlt évtizedekben a Reynolsszal és számtalan más projekttel a világ szinte minden táján megfordult, megjelent lemezeinek száma több mint kétszáz. Egyebek mellett olyan művészekkel dolgozott együtt mint Pauline Oliveros, Phill Niblock, a Nihilist Spasm Band, a The New Blockaders, Jim O'Rourke, Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide, Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), KK Null, Jojo Hiroshige (Hijokaidan), Merzbow, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Mats Gustafsson, Lasse Marhaug, RLW, C.Spencer Yeh, Okyung Lee, Eddie Prévost... Az akusztikus és az elektromos gitár mellett gyakran alkalmaz ready-made-eket, épít és használ különös hangszer-mutánsokat (pl. húr nélküli gitár), szintetizátorokat, élő elektronikát, komputer-elektronikát, környezeti felvételeket és a mindennapi élet tárgyait. A kritikusok így írnak róla: "Courtis has produced brillant work with the relative primitive tools at his disposal” (The Wire, Nagy-Britannia), "a true mastermind of noisescapes and sonic abstractions” (IEM magazin, Oroszország). Anla Courtis a The Wire-nek adott egyik korábbi interjújában beszélt a folklór és az experimentális zene hatásáról: “It’s about working with the imaginary dimension of folklore. Countries and cultures are collective inventions and, in some ways, we are inventing them all the time. Nowadays, everything is mixed up. Traditions are being constantly redefined. Anything could potentially become the next folklore... When listening to all this music, I realised just how ‘experimental’ music can be. I mean, I’m supposed to be an experimental musician, but in the end it’s quite shocking to notice that ‘experimental’ is not just a genre, label or adjective – it’s a basic quality of music. I think that all powerful music is basically experimental in the sense that it somehow sets its own parameters at some point. Non vedevano l’ora di sparargli in fronte. Il successo di Addio alle armi, tre anni prima, era stato straordinario. Troppo. Hemingway mette in quel libro, letteralmente, la vita e la morte. Nel 1928 la seconda moglie di EH, Pauline, partorisce Patrick: taglio cesareo, diciotto ore di doglie, ogni sospiro pareva l’ultimo. A fine anno, poi, il padre. Si ammazza. Quando consegna il manoscritto del romanzo, Hemingway si fa spedire dalla madre la pistola con cui si è ucciso il padre, specie di terribile memento mori. Ma quell’anno, appunto, in molti non vedono l’ora di sparare in faccia a Hemingway.

1932, Morte nel pomeriggio. Per chi non ascolta la campana degli hemingweiani di latta, quello è il più nel libro di Hemingway. Passò il 1931 tra la pesca al largo di Key West, la fiesta di San Firmin (la settima a cui partecipa), il flirt con Jane Mason, “bellissima moglie di un funzionario della Pan American” (Fernanda Pivano). R.L. Duffs, dal trono del “New York Times”, il 25 settembre 1932, lo scuoia con delicato bisturi. “Ci si potrebbe chiedere perché Mister Hemingway ritenga che i lettori americani siano tanto interessati al combattimento dei tori da comprare e sorbirsi un libro di 517 pagine sul tema. Ma questo significherebbe mettere il carro davanti ai buoi, o meglio, lasciare che sia il toro a sventolare il panno rosso sul ceffo del matador e non viceversa… La realtà è che il tanto celebrato stile Hemingway non è risolto come nei romanzi o nei racconti. Mister Hemingway, in questo libro, è colpevole del grave peccato di aver scritto frasi che devono essere lette almeno due o tre volte per capirle… La sua non è arte, nel senso che ricaviamo dalle pagine finali di Addio alle armi – è mero fuoco d’artificio… Mister Hemingway tenta di sorprendere il piccolo pugno di lettori che ancora vogliono ancora essere sorpresi… Il libro, insomma, troverà posto negli scaffali dei drogati di Hemingway. Non creerà altri drogati di Hemingway. Azione e dialogo sono le armi migliori di Hemingway – diluiti in filosofia e proclami, indeboliscono di molto lo scrittore”.

La Cambridge University Press ha annunciato la pubblicazione del volume quinto delle Letters of Ernest Hemingway. Nei paesi culturalmente avanzati fanno così: dei ‘classici’ pubblicano tutto, panni sporchi compresi, in edizioni utili, reperibili. Il volume uscirà a giugno, copre gli anni 1932-1934, sono raccolte lettere, tra gli altri, a Maxwell Perkins, John Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Come aperitivo il “The Observer” – firma il pezzo Dalya Alberge – ne pubblica una che riguarda l’edizione inglese di Morte nel pomeriggio. Hemingway è incavolato perché l’editore inglese vorrebbe ‘sanare’, addomesticare per il pubblico UK alcune zone del libro. “Prenderò le mie decisioni sanguinarie rispetto a ciò che voglio o non voglio scrivere, senza che il mio libro venga stravolto”, scrive EH all’editore Jonathan Cape.

La lettera è del 19 novembre 1932, Hemingway ha appena incassato la stroncatura americana di Morte nel pomeriggio. E sbotta: “Non capisci che se devono essere fatte modifiche o tagli sono io che devo farli, che non mi farò rovinare il libro? Se vuoi pubblicare altri miei libri o meno è necessario che lo sappia molto chiaramente. Tu non sei il mio vicario. Se il Papa è il vicario di Cristo è perché Nostro Signore non è qui sulla terra a prendere le decisioni. Non sono Cristo (questo è ovvio) e finché sarò su questa terra prenderò io le decisioni sanguinarie su ciò che voglio scrivere… Se dici che il libro non sarà edito perché contiene certe parole, affari tuoi. Se credessi che alcune parole non fossero importanti, che possano essere modificate senza alcuna perdita di senso, significato o effetto, le avrei cambiate o avrei lasciato uno spazio bianco. Che io sia dannato se voglio un vicario che purga i miei libri per compiacere le librerie”.

Il problema del libro? Agli inglesi non garbava la locuzione “vadano a fottersi”; avrebbero preferito “si vadano a impiccare”. Si fottano, appunto. In una lettera precedente, ad Archibald MacLeish, Hemingway se la prende con il recensore del “New York Times”. “Che quei figli di puttana non capiscano il mio libro mi fa stare bene – significa che sono troppo avanti per loro”.

L’anno dopo, nel 1933, Hemingway esce con Winner Take Nothing. Quattordici racconti, tra cui quel piccolo classico, Un posto pulito, illuminato bene. La vita continua a torcersi come una vipera. Quella ventenne con cui aveva una storia, Jane Mason, va in follia per lui, è gelosa, cerca di uccidersi, “si frattura la spina dorsale gettandosi dalla finestra ed è costretta a una sedia a rotelle” (Pivano). Alterna i safari africani alle gite in mare: nel 1934 ordina la sua barca, la “Pilar”, scrive poco, fa l’ammutinato alla letteratura, lo attira la rivolta alla ribalta, alle fotografie in posa; per una volta, almeno, vuole che la vita lo azzanni.
