The not-quite chill out players somehow tend to know each other well. I mean, some members from one outfit work in another with Kruder & Dorfmeister being a great case of that. Richard Dorfmeister of the two already defined downtempo with Tosca, so his another duet moves within a similar modus operandi. Nonetheless, I'm unsurprised this project functions more as a remix unit thanks to their sound being close to their other jobs, so they haven't released their tunes that much. Their pieces that were released, however, do feel – what else – close to Tosca, but they seem darker. No, I don't plan to call them a horror version of the other duo, Kruder & Dorfmeister merely put their lights settings lower. They move within a darker night.

Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister have been making and producing downtempo-electronic music as Kruder & Dorfmeister for three decades, and on Saturday night they were in the East Village to close out the American leg of their 30th-anniversary tour with a rousing show at Webster Hall.

DJ-Kicks by Kruder & Dorfmeister 1996 Downtempo / Trip Hop / Drum n Bass

Although they'd been primarily regarded as a talented remix and production duo, in 1996, Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister revealed to the world that what they may have actually been even better at doing, all along, was making DJ mixes. That year, they put out a pair of terrific ones: a drum n bass journey called Conversions, and their super chilly magnum opus for German electronic label !K7's popular DJ-Kicks series. And that DJ-Kicks one, in particular, happens to hold a mythical status of its own, as it's been rated by many as the single-greatest DJ mix that's ever been made. Plus, like Conversions, DJ-Kicks had drum n bass on it too, but K&D also blended that dnb with blissful bouts of dub-infused downtempo and trip hop as well 😌.

But what I ended up listening to today wasn't actually that mix, exactly; instead, it was the *double-12-inch edition* of K&D's DJ-Kicks, which collected full-length, unmixed versions of seven of the songs that appeared on the mixed CD edition.

So, if you love loungey chillout music and/or spacious and atmospheric dnb tunes, not only is the DJ mix essential listening for you, but so are all of these uninterrupted versions of some of that mix's own tracks too. Glasgow's Paul Hunter kicks things off with a terrific head-nodder in "Living Free," which is then followed by UK artist Omni Trio's "Trippin' on Broken Beats," a sweet, shuffling dnb-type of groove that incorporates one of my favorite synthesizer sounds of all time: the Korg M1 Organ preset 02, which was famously featured in a bunch of club classics, like Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman." And after that, Germany's Hardfloor, the master manipulators of the Roland TB-303—the bass synthesizer responsible for producing the famous acid squelch sound that kickstarted the whole acid house revolution—grace us with a trip-hoppy collage of different electronic sounds called "Dubdope," which sees them far removed from the hard trance and techno that had made them such dance legends in the first place 😊.

Plus, the kings of the globally-quilted chillout sound, Washington, DC's Thievery Corporation, swing by at the end to deliver the ultra-satisfying "Shaolin Satellite" too.

So, since there isn't a single skip-worthy track on K&D's DJ-Kicks mix, it only makes sense that there wouldn't be one on its corresponding double-12-inch version either. As expected, a terrific, little collection of very well-crafted relaxational vibes here.

Ransel is back on Beatservice Records with his latest studio offering, aiming directly for the floor via the off-kilter dynamism of "Love Is In The Air." Øivind A Sjøvoll has been on a non-stop roll since launching the Ransel project — an outlet for the music occupying the more dance-oriented corners of his wildly diverse repertoire. The Norwegian artist's production range is nothing short of staggering, and, while his previous Ransel releases have certainly lived up to the kinetically-charged manifesto, his latest piece is among the most club-focused to date. Driven by a sturdy four-on-the-floor rhythm, "Love Is In The Air" bursts out of the blocks with undulating synth chords cascading over bumping bass as alien textures add to the late-night mood. Stripped, hypnotic, and deviant in tone, the immaculately formed groove is designed with dancers firmly in mind. Yet more stunning material here from Ransel, further enhancing the already glowing reputation of this ultra-talented production don.

Beatservice Records is thrilled to announce the *Islands EP from Ransel – an intriguing new project birthed from the inspired mind of Øivind A Sjøvoll, better known as Kohib. The Islands EP sees Sjøvoll adopt a floor-focused sound for the all-new moniker, serving two typically finessed compositions that each exude the distinguished quality of production we've come to expect from the skilled sonic craftsman. Having released scores of well-regarded titles on some of the world's most revered underground labels, his latest project is a perfect fit for his familiar Beatservice home. Both tracks on the EP feature bewitching vocals performed by Charlotte Qamaniq and Kathleen Merrit, who spent time visiting his Tromsø hometown back in 2018. Embellishing the music with a delightfully mysterious charm, their traditional throat singing lends itself perfectly to Sjøvoll's profound sound signature. The opening track "Qimmiq" unfolds over a hypnotic midtempo rhythm, with the unforgettable vocals echoing over a bed of immaculately formed synth textures as thick waves of percussion add endless depth to the groove. Undulating over a deeply immersive arrangement, the music mesmerizes as it effortlessly builds. Nudging the tempo while delicately upping the energy levels, the propulsive strut of "Islands" is equally atmospheric. Rugged drums and infectious percussion provide the club-ready power before the almighty bass hook adds infinite weight to the groove. Purposefully ebbing and flowing over a full-bodied arrangement, saucer-eyed synths and loose-limbed congas swirl over the grainy vocal chants, combining to create a gloriously enigmatic moment of dance-focused abandon. Striking, original, and overflowing with class, this is yet more impressive work from Sjøvoll, leaving us waiting with bated breath to hear more music crafted under his fascinating new Ransel alter-ego.
