Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek in Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade, 2016) Cast: Sandra Hüller, Peter Simonischek, Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Trystan Pütter, Ingrid Bisu, Lucy Russell, Hadewych Minis, Vlad Ivanov, Victoria Cocias. Screenplay: Maren Ade. Cinematography: Patrick Orth. The nearly three hours -- well, two hours, 42 minutes -- of Toni Erdmann don't exactly fly by. It's more that they sometimes pause while we accustom ourselves to the eccentricity of the characters and begin to absorb some of the satire, build up another head of steam, and speed into another head-spinning but frequently funny episode. There's a feeling of improv about the film, and with improv there are often dead spots between outbursts of brilliance. The film is about a father and daughter, Winfried (Peter Simonischek) and Ines Conradi (Sandra Hüller). He's a shaggy old prankster who teaches music in a school; she's an intensely driven corporate consultant now working to land a contract in Romania that would help companies streamline -- mostly by jettisoning their unionized work force. The film is thus a satire on global corporate capitalism, with side glances at the pervasive sexism in that world. But writer-director Maren Ade has chosen not to weight the film in the direction of either character study or satire, and I think the film suffers from tone problems occasionally. Granted, it would be easy to slip into formula with such mismatched characters, a father who delights in comic disguises like fright wigs and false teeth to shake up his uptight daughter's aggressively workaholic ways. It's to the credit of the film that there are enough unexpected moments -- such as Ines's singing "The Greatest Love of All" at a Romanian family's Easter celebration that Winfried has crashed -- that it never sinks to the routine and conventional. Finally, the film does, I think, go too far, when Ines suddenly decides to host a corporate party in the nude, insisting that all the guests strip too, and claims that it's a "team-building" exercise. Winfried, of course, crashes this party as well, wearing a Bulgarian kukeri costume -- it almost literally turns the film into a shaggy-dog story. Toni Erdmann was a big critical hit, and was a major contender for the foreign film Oscar that went, I think correctly, to Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman.

peter simonischek is responsible for one of the funniest character introductions i've ever seen. like when my wife and i watched toni erdmann and he walked into a scene (and if you watch it you'll know what i'm talking about lmao) we just burst into immediate laughter and had to rewind the scene to watch it again. toni erdmann is one of the best films of the 2010s and he is its beating heart. i hope the sandra huller love at this year's cannes as well as peter's unfortunate passing inspires more people to go and watch this film

GEDEON BURKHARD
The known actor from INSPECTOR REX, COBRA 11 and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS hosts the gala concert.
Gedeon Burkhard was born in Munich and raised bilingually in German and English, subsequently attending boarding school in England and American high school. He starred in his first movie AUNT MARIA when he was 10, his second lead role followed one year later in the American/German co-production BLOOD AND HONOR as Hartmut Keller. Due to his bilingual upbringing, he was the only actor who did not have to be dubbed in either version. After high school, Burkhard concentrated on his professional training, attending musical school and taking speech and acting classes.
In 1988 Burkhard starred in the motion picture WELCOME TO GERMANY, next to Tony Curtis, which marked the beginning of his career as a grownup. Since then, Burkhard has acted in numerous films, including ACTING IT OUT (German Film Award/Movie and Bavarian Film Award/Actor) by acclaimed German director Wortman, SILENCE LIKE GLASS by Carl Schenkel and MAKING UP (Student Academy Award USA/German Film Award) by Katja von Garnier. He also starred in the internationally successful television series INSPECTOR REX (sold to over 140 territories) and COBRA 11 (an action series, sold to over 120 territories).
In 2006 Burkhard portrayed Henry Neumann, a Jewish boxer trapped in a boxcar with his family on the way to Auschwitz, in the motion picture THE LAST TRAIN and 2009 he played the Jewish Basterd Will Wicky in Quentin Tarantino’s movie INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. In October 2011 Gedeon Burkhard was seen in the cinemas next to Gudrun Landgrebe, Catherine Flemming and Konstantin Wecker in the World War drama WUNDERKINDER, directed by Marcus Rosenmüller, produced by the renowned Artur Brauner. The love of music and the friendship connect nations, which is the idea of Rosenmüllers film.
Further films of Gedeon Burkhard include the comedy OHNE GNADE with his fellow actor Jürgen Prochnow, and the Italian thriller BETWEEN THE OLIVE TREES, directed by the American David Worth. In 2011 Gedeon Burkhard was also filming the movie LUDWIG II, playing the character of Graf Max von Holstein along with Hannah Herzsprung, Peter Simonischek and Uwe Ochsenknecht.
Gedeon Burkhard has been hosting the gala concert HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA since 2010.
