These served not only to emphasize the need for systematic library programmes, but linked prison populations to the category of the public, as has been done in countries with vigorous library movements. Scholars of library science have produced detailed accounts of prison libraries, such as Anupama whose PhD thesis on prison libraries in Himachal Pradesh indicates that after preliminary reforms of 1835 in the colonial period, the Prisons Act of 1870 and 1894 shape the existing prison system in India. An overview of library services in prisons of Punjab (India)’ by Nirmal Singh who is Assistant Librarian, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, suggests that few prisons in Punjab have good libraries, often lacking even a newspaper, thereby locking their inmates away from any contact with goings on in the world.

Of the well-functioning libraries in various parts of the country, he mentions the Viyyur Central Jail (Kerala), which ‘has a separate library building with a collection of over 10,000 books in addition to newspapers and periodicals for 800 inmates (The Times of India, 2011)’, and the Central Prison, Poojappura which contains 15,000 books. Among other libraries that feature in his article are those of Bhondsi in Haryana, and Tihar in Delhi.

Singh also cites the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), Noida, which set up a library in Dasna Jail for prisoners. The library was stocked with over 4,000 titles by students ‘based on the survey of prisoners about their requirement for books as an extension of their social initiative under the Ranganathan Society for Social Welfare and Library Development.’, he states. ‘The institute also gifted two computers to the jail with library automation software uploaded’, and students trained prisoners to look after the library and the computers (The Times of India, 2012).

The Centre on the Death Penalty and libraries in Madhya Pradesh

The Death Penalty Research Project at the Centre on the Death Penalty at the National Law University, Delhi took up the question and included queries about the library as part of its research among prisoners, some on the death row.

As with other studies on prison libraries, these interviews mention classroom like rooms which seat between 8 and 10 people. The SC Bose Jabalpur Central Prison Library is a typical example of a functioning library which stores books on history, fiction, and law among other areas, and prisoners are allowed to borrow books for a fifteen day period.   It does not have any link with state libraries. Records of borrowing and a catalogue of books is preserved and literacy and skill training classes are conducted by programmes such as sarv shiksha abhiyaan and NGOS. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) has a ubiquitous presence in teaching programmes in prison to service literacy programmes. Officials in the Hoshiangabad prison stated that ten percent of the inmates needed basic classes in literacy, and the prison also conducted BA level courses that 76 inmates had cleared, while in the prison in Ujjain, 150 prisoners had sat the IGNOU exam. As is possibly the case in other prisons, while the officials at Hoshiangabad said that the prison put in requests for unavailable books when prisoners asked for them, a prisoner suggests that such requests were obstructed.

Vocation over pleasure

This is perhaps unsurprising as the prison mentions that the budget for books is the same as the stationery budget. Though some libraries in the country are linked to their state district libraries, this is not the case with most prisons. Such links could circumvent the absence of funds which, in the case of those prisons that actually address these needs, would be directed towards vocational training and more instrumental courses. In a prison in Gwalior, an official noted that since most prisoners from the Chambal region had very little education, rarely was a desire expressed for books.

J: As far as I am concerned, prison has proved to be the world’s biggest university. There is no book here that I have not studied. It is true that I can no longer see the sights and spectacles of the outside world. However, when I read I can visualize the world outside within my mind’s eye.

I: When did you begin to cultivate the habit of reading?

J: It is only after I came to prison that I began to read.

I: Would you say that your understanding has expanded?

J: Yes, this has been a change that has influenced my life and my outlook.

I: This expansion of understanding- what is the reason for it?

J: All my perspectives have been enhanced by the books I borrow from the library. I have read almost 10,000 books since coming to this prison. However, it’s been four years since I last stepped foot inside this library.

I: Why is that?

J: After escaping prison, I haven’t been allowed to come here. I request books inside my cell and they are given to me.

I: Which kind of books do you find most engrossing?

J: If you must know, Eyadi is a book I’ve read several times. Then there’s Manushyan Oru Aamukham, Aarachar and Ajith Varkey’s new book.

I: We have heard that you enjoy reading philosophical works as well.

Women have been ruling the education space at the school level because of their innate ability to instil a sense of security and comfort in children. “Women have a natural instinct to better understand the emotional needs of a student. This gives them an edge over their male counterparts,” says Banka (Bihar) school teacher Ruby Kumari, who made headlines for her unique Math pedagogy where she taught using one’s hands as a calculator. Hailing from the rural belt, Ruby, however, struggles to convince the parents in the villages to send their children especially girls to schools daily. “They are apprehensive about the safety of the girls but the presence of women teachers comes as a relief to them,” adds Ruby.

“What makes women successful as a teacher is their ability to multitask. They can juggle both at the home and professional front,” says Anushri Mazumdar, English teacher, Assisi Convent School, Noida.

Challenges in HEIs While women find greater acceptance as teachers at the primary level, they still do not have a stronghold in the higher education sector. ” The students, given their patriarchal background, sometimes feel that women may not be good enough to teach, more specifically the STEM subjects. Even the number of women faculty for such courses is less,” says Srabani Taraphder, professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Kharagpur. In the field of Chemistry, for instance, there are less than five female professors in the entire IIT system, she adds. “It is ironical that the number of women enrolling for PhD programmes is proportional to the number of men in STEM. For IIMs, it was only in 2017 that the glass ceiling was broken when Neelu Rohmetra was appointed as the first female director to helm IIM Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. “The lack of women leaders in IITs arises from the fact that there is a shortage of qualified women for the highest administrative post,”says Taraphder. “Despite their aspiration, often with family as their first priority, Indian women find it difficult to meet the demands of such high-pressure jobs, which reduce their pursuance and thereby chances of being at the top. Certainly, there is need to encourage women in leadership positions to bring in the element of diversity and newness in the already established organisational governance mindset,” Rohmetra adds.

Women in research “While women are able to reach mid-management level, of ten they restrain themselves from taking on the larger responsibility of heading the institutions, fearing they will not be able to do justice to the role. Leadership roles, irrespective of gender, demand time, energy and commitment as well as taking tough measures. But due to the social conditioning, many a time, women leave this role,” says Ruchi Singh, Scientist E, National Institute of Pathology (ICMR). Echoing her, principal scientist of Physics at CERN, Archana Sharma, says, “Girls are doing extremely well in schools and also at the undergraduate level, however by the time it comes to the masters and PhD level, the numbers continuously fizzle out. Only 2.5% Nobel laureates are women. Stereotypical behaviours continue in the society and there are few role models for girls to emulate a fantastic career balanced with an equally successful family and social life.”

Sharma is hopeful of the future and believes that there is light at the end of the tunnel. “Many women researchers have made it to the spotlight at the top of their careers, battling all odds. They serve as motivation and even if this is a drop in the ocean, eventually it is a step in the right direction,” she adds.

Tea, biryani, national anthem: How anti-CAA protesters in Shaheen Bagh welcomed 2020 - delhi news

Few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, the road outside Jamia Millia Islamia was reverberating with cheers from the audience as performers on stage sang parody songs criticising government policies. The scene changed as the clock struck 12.Phones went up in the air to record the moment, a person who was unfurling the tricolour near Jamia’s main gate took a pause, hijab-clad women holding their babies adjusted themselves, and soon they began singing the national anthem. As soon as the national anthem ended, they erupted into chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Inquilaab Zindabaad’.Class 8 student Aliza Haider was among the protesters who had come to attend the New Year Revolution programme organised by Jamia students on Tuesday night. With a candle in one hand and a placard in another, she stood a few steps away from the large poster of BR Ambedkar hung near the varsity’s gate number 7.“Generally, we go to the New Friends Colony community centre for New Year celebrations. But this year, we came here because this is more important. It took a lot of effort to prepare our Constitution, we cannot let it go in vain or let anybody change it,” said Haider.Hundreds of others like Haider have been participating in the demonstrations outside the varsity against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which began on December 15 after a violent clash between protesters and police injured dozens.“They entered the campus and beat up the students who were studying. If our children are not safe where they study, what should we celebrate? We are here to make our dissent known,” said Maria Shaikh, a local resident.The programme at Jamia, comprised of musical performances based on the theme of revolution, ended a little after midnight with protesters giving a call to move to Shaheen Bagh - where locals have engaged in an indefinite sit-in, blocking the arterial GD Birla Marg for 17 days now. Around 200 shops in the area, including major factory outlets, have been shut for over two weeks incurring huge losses. The protesters, however, have one thing to say: We won’t budge unless the CAA is repealed. Last week, the Delhi Police had written to the protesters urging them to clear the road because the sit-in protest has blocked an important road - Number 13A - that connects Delhi and Noida. For the last 17 days, the traffic police have diverted the traffic from 13A to other roads leading to traffic jams in many parts of south Delhi.Like Jamia, Shaheen Bagh too welcomed the new year with the national anthem followed by a night full of revolutionary songs and poems interspersed with tea, biryani, and ice-cream breaks for all who thronged the spot. The crowds started swelling around midnight as people from different parts of the city reached Shaheen Bagh to show their solidarity including activists like Harsh Mander, Kafeel Khan, Yogendra Yadav, and actor Zeeshan Ayyub. Protesters were also collecting messages in a cardboard box which they plan to send to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office.Natasha, a PhD scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University, was among those who said she had ditched house party to welcome the new year at Shaheen Bagh. “I was not in Delhi when these protests started. I reached Delhi on Monday and knew I had to come here. The energy here is exploding. People are exposing their kids here to the things happening in our lives which is extremely important. The protests here give me hope as they bring a discourse on resistance,” she said.With tricolour painted on her cheeks, Sumaiya Khan, 18, was among the protesters who regularly came to Shaheen Bagh. “One of the most significant things is that women of Shaheen Bagh are out to protest. Earlier, our mothers wouldn’t allow us to step out of our houses so late. But now, they ask us to wait till they finish our chores and join us,” she said while heading home at 2 am.Her cousin Shaba Naaz, 17, from Jharkhand added that generally they go home by 11 pm but decided to stay till late past midnight on Tuesday. “New Year celebration is not just about dancing and going out. Coming here to save our Constitution is more important. We are medical aspirants. Conversations in our house have drifted towards what would happen if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) happens just before my exams in May. That is why these protests are crucial for everyone,” she said.While speaking about the women protesters at the spot who have been sitting there for days, the sisters said, “There have been negative perceptions about those who wear hijab.
