“My name is Bria Shinoda. I was born in 1981.”

Bria was going around the house like she always did. She used her device to talk to herself. Elisa sighed as she watched her. She missed Mike, that was obvious. He was her best friend and primary caregiver. They were hoping she would be able to visit the band when they performed on the Jimmy Kimmel Show but it depended upon how she felt. She was doing her best. Did she know where he went? Yes, they went on tour to promote their new album.

That was correct. Because of her brain damage, Mike sometimes wondered about her short and long-term memory. He didn’t know if she was inputting information or not. She did have trouble sometimes recalling memories. When he asked her about what she remembered from the accident, she responded by saying she remembered the sound of breaking glass.

The next thing she remembered was being in the hospital waking up after brain surgery. She could not remember the accident itself. He thought her brain might have blocked that out because it was too traumatic for her. She could remember her life before the accident and everything leading up to it. Then, her memory was gone. He wasn’t a neurologist, so he wasn’t sure if his theory was correct. When he got back from the tour, he was going to make an appointment for her.

He just wanted to know in detail what parts of her brain were affected and what it would mean for her future. Especially if they could give them an idea of what they should expect. Was her condition going to get worse? At what rate would it get worse? Five years? Ten years? Not having that information was the hardest part and the most frustrating.

Elisa asked her what her middle name was. Michelle. Her name was going to be Jean-Marie for her parents but they changed it legally to be Bria Michelle. She thought both names were beautiful. Did she find out why they changed it? No, she just assumed it was because it was easier for people to pronounce. What were his first and middle names? Jean Pierre. She didn’t know her mother’s middle name. That was a very handsome name.

“My monitor doesn’t know how to pronounce his name correctly. It was John but with a zh.”

“Okay, now I understand. That is very French. Do you know what ALS is?”

“I don’t know what it stands for but it is a disease that affects the muscles in your body. The brain can’t send signals to them anymore. Mike thinks I have it but we can’t get a diagnosis.”

“Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It’s also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.”

“Yes. I could not remember what it was called. We thought I was going to get a diagnosis when I was in the hospital but I didn’t qualify. He took me to a specialist but he said the same thing.”

She was a medical mystery. The only diagnosis she had was epilepsy. No matter what happened, everything would be okay. How did she know that? She didn’t. It was just something she had to believe in. She nodded her head. Okay.

That next Friday, she was backstage waiting for Linkin Park at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. They thought she was coming but weren’t one hundred percent sure if she would make it. Joe and Phoenix were the first people to see her. Joe turned around and called out to him. Hey, Mikey! Guess who’s here? His eyes got wide because he had no idea. Until he walked in and saw his wife. Oh my god! They laughed as he walked over and hugged her. They were all very surprised and excited!

She was there with Abbie, who he also said hello to. After putting down their stuff on the stage, the band came over to say hello. How was she doing? She was very excited to be there.

“I told Elisa not to tell you guys we were coming, so it would be a surprise.”

“We are very surprised! Did you have dinner yet?”

“Yes, we did. We ate before we came. Is this going to be on television?”

“Yes, it will be. We are taping for the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Are you sensitive to lights flashing”, Phoenix asked.

“No, I don’t have that type of epilepsy. Thank you for asking though.”

Then, they didn’t have to worry about her having a seizure. They did have an extra pair of headphones for her to wear during the concert. While the band talked to the people running the show, she and Abbie went over to the seats so they were out of the way. They both had passes that allowed them to be there. Bria watched everything happening.

During the show, she couldn’t talk because it had to be quiet. After getting all the information, Brad came over and explained how everything was going to work. They were going to play two songs for the show. Then, they were going to play eleven more songs for the audience. She indicated she understood. He shook her hand before handing Abbie the headphones. Thank you. How was hanging out with Elisa? She liked her a lot. He was thrilled to hear that!

She told him how much fun she had with her. Then, they both agreed on the same thing. He agreed that was true. The audience was being let in, so he had to say goodbye. They would see them after the show. Backstage, Mike had a newfound excitement and energy. His wife was going to be in the audience! He jumped up and down.

Phoenix asked him if he needed to go Zoomies out. Maybe. They laughed. He would get his energy out while on stage. Abbie turned off her machine, so it didn’t accidentally input text during the show. They sat quietly and watched. Bria was curious about everything going on. When the boys came out, she wanted to jump up and down. The audience cheered for them. Abbie quietly put the headphones on her head to protect her hearing. She could still hear everything.

If she could, she would be singing along with them. Instead, she sang along in her head. It was better than watching them rehearse over and over again. The audience was energetic and they were throwing that energy back to them.

Before the last song, Mike introduced his wife. He talked about how much she influenced the band and how honored they were that she was there with them. She was invited on stage to join them. The band talked to Jimmy about bringing her on stage before the show to get permission. As long as they didn’t do it while they were taping. They promised to do it for the last song.

She was wheeled out on stage by one of the crew members. Everyone noticed she was disabled. Chester hugged her before they started the song, Faint. To the band, bringing her out meant everything. She was part of the band and had been since 1998. They credited her as being their inspiration and best friend. They could tell she was having the best time of her life! Her face and eyes were lit up brighter than they had ever seen!

When the song ended and the lights went down, they brought her backstage and into their dressing room. Chester asked how she liked the show. Nothing. She couldn’t respond. They looked at her monitor and noticed it was off. Once it was turned back on, she was able to answer him directly.

“Abbie turned off my monitor, so it would not accidentally go off during the show. I thought it was better than watching you guys rehearse.”

“Thank you! That means a lot to us”, Rob said.

“I was singing along in my head. I tried to mimic Chester but I was unable to scream.”

They laughed. How were the cats? They ignored her existence until they wanted food or attention. That sounded like them.

Abbie was able to get backstage using her pass. She was pointed in the direction of their dressing room. Thank you. She found it quite easily because the name was on the door. Along with laughter, she also heard Bria’s machine. They said hello to her when they noticed her walking in. She introduced herself as her nurse. It was nice to meet her. They returned the headphones before they forgot.

Where were they going now? They were going to go to Irvine before going to Copenhagen. Did they know Danish? No, they didn’t. She was just joking. Did she know Danish? No. How about French? She did but her program only knew English, so she was unable to translate. Since they had some time, Joe and Mike looked through the settings on her machine. They were able to program it to go back and forth between English and French. After going back to the main screen, they had her try it out.

“Bonjour.”

“Hello.”

“I have no idea what that means”, Rob said.

“I like big butts and I cannot lie. You other brothers can’t deny. When a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face, you get sprung.”

They laughed. Baby Got Back? Of course. They had never heard that in French before. That was awesome! She jokingly told them they were welcome. When it was time to go, they said goodbye to her and Abbie. Mike said I love you and good night. He would be home soon. She said I love you back to him. He kissed her forehead before joining the band. It had been a great night!

As much as he was tired from a long day, he would go to sleep dreaming about his wife being there. He would be home with her before he knew it. Chester put his arm around his shoulders as they walked to the van that would bring them to their hotel. Thanks, Chester. After sitting down, he closed his eyes. He saw how happy Bria was while watching them perform. It was a memory he wanted to keep for the rest of his life.

life before death

spring day. a corpse is buried beneath that beautiful cherry blossom tree.

yeon subin was born on april 2nd, 2032. cradled by vivid pink cherry blossoms that greeted her birth, subin lived as she died, her breaths numbered by the heartbeat that skipped irregularly in her chest - an offbeat metronome counting every beat.

her parents were loving, nurturing: her father, an IT technician, her mother, a schoolteacher. together with her younger sister, they make the picture-perfect family.

almost.

subin grew with complications with her lungs. she adjusted to living with a weak constitution – quick to get sick, slow to recover, and all the accompanying cliches. sports were off-limit after an asthma attack in the middle of the soccer field in middle school, but she didn’t mind too much. however, the larger subin grew, the less oxygen she could supply to all parts of her body. with limited access to the outdoors and other activities that other kids her age participated in, subin turned inwards, quiet and subdued. plagued with guilt, she watched her sister drift away from their family, bitter at the parents who dotted on fragile little subin and only broken little subin.

(subin would never forget the venom dripping from her sister’s voice.)

guilty, lonely, sad. she spent her days looking at the falling cherry blossoms, the same ones that turned a bright crimson in the glint of the setting sun. summer nights. what a strange thing! to be alive.

mintleaf.

the alias of an underworld prankster, mintleaf floated in the forums and dark webs, a name with no strings attached. in the parallel world of black screens, mintleaf was powerful - online anonymity, her protective veil, and the lines of code her magic spells. her father had come home with a laptop on her twelfth birthday, and subin was immediately entranced. what was only supposed to act as a temporary haven engulfed her entire world; she had dove past the surface of videos and games in a matter of months, and headed deeper into the black ocean of increasingly dark content. physical strength no longer had meaning in her new reality. and for the first time in her life, subin felt strong.

the confidence she built in the night pushed forth and blossomed in the day. subin entered high school with a new group of friends, sociable and fun, and her teachers praised her attentiveness. poor health continued to hound her, but it no longer towered her as it had in the past. subin was charming as she was unpredictable, equipped with a quick mind and an even quicker tongue. subin felt on top of the world.

and she was.

almost.

autumn sun. it starts as soon as it ends.

too much of a good thing quickly becomes bad. she’s expelled in her final year of high school. it was a careless mistake, a slip-up that she could have never accounted for. because who would expect her own sister would betray her?

(how foolish of her to leave a harddrive unencrypted, lying so haphazardly in her room for anyone to take.)

changing grades, hacking emails, falsifying identification and so much more. called in front of the grand jury of aghast parents, fuming administrations, and mute peers, subin kept her head held high. the principal had looked at her and asked: how do you plead?

guilty, i guess?

the wit was not appreciated by anyone but herself.

much like a scale, where one side goes up, the other goes down: subin spiraled, mintleaf uplifted. night became day as she scoured forums to master her trade. unwilling, and unable, to continue higher education, subin threw herself into hacktivism. while none of her viral attacks surpassed more than the occasional aggravating DDoS attack, it was enough for her name to solidify in the anonymous community.

meanwhile, her identity as a bright young student quickly dimmed. subin, high school drop-out, worked until the end in the neighborhood convenience store to appease her parents in hopes of lessening their suffocating disappointment.

and then it happened.

winter moon. like a thick thorn tree forest

subin kept a journal at this point in her life. not in a written notebook, but through medical records: may 19. viral respiratory infection. august 04. fever. december 29. pulmonary fibrosis. terminal.

the medication she took for her weak heart and worsening lungs had finally come to a terminal decree. pulmonary fibrosis, the doctor had said, at best, three years.

a disease rare in someone so young as her, and yet she had the luck of the draw. Scar tissues continued to fester and spread in her lungs, and eventually, her lungs would no longer sufficiently supply her body with the necessary oxygen. her muscles atrophied, and her stamina dropped.

the month after the initial diagnosis passed in a blur: her mother became her caretaker, the new medication made her feel awful, and all the accompanying things that came with a terminal illness. month two culminated in psychological decay: depression, guilt, regret. she withdrew from everyone around her, playing the part of the strong victim for only her immediate family.

month three, the turning point. the hacking forum she visited had decided on a new target. the hacktivists there, crusaders for truth and deeply against afterlife had their eyes set on securing the downfall of AFTpex. they wanted an insider, someone they could trust, someone that would have the tools and intelligence to supply them with information needed to take the company down from the inside-out.

and what better than anonymous mintleaf?

the end became the beginning as subin took on her role as the spy. she studied what she could of the company, researching from her own limited time, and compiling information into the forum for them to transmit to her. the details would be ironed out during the period of her death, but she trusted the unknown hackers to keep their end of the deal. mintleaf would infiltrate, her mind donated to afterlife for a worthy cause.

her parents agreed immediately, eager to give their daughter a chance at life she had been denied since birth. her sister stayed quiet.

subin lived for another year. her death was a quiet affair, almost poetic really. she was laid to rest under the same cherry blossoms that greeted her in the beginning, the vivid pink petals turned a soft red as they fluttered down to the ground.

life after death

spring, again. what do the cherry blossoms call to mind?

like a phoenix rising from the ashes, subin is reborn. The illness that plagued in her life no longer existed in death, and the sickness that dug deep into her bones had been lifted from her. In order to protect her family and to avoid any possible linkage back to mintleaf and her true identity, subin uses the alias “lee sujin” when introducing herself. nevertheless, she never parts with her name completely. (it’s much too important.)

subin continues to number her days. as a relatively new person in afterlife, subin usually wanders, more often lost than found in the vast space. examining everything and anything for a manipulable weakness, she takes notes with paper and pen in a special cipher to avoid detection. any people of interest are marked as well. the time she spends besides research is spent on a never ending bucket list she had crafted at the time of death. they’re sort of silly things really: sneaking out of the house, sky jumping, designing a video game, all things she had been denied by either her parents or from her lack of endurance. however, as she is no longer burdened with decaying lungs, subin has taken up exercise, trying to bring up the strength of her simulated body.

Sen. John McCain, Maverick Politician and Decorated War Veteran, Dies at 81

Sen. John McCain, the former POW and outspoken Republican politician nicknamed The Maverick for being unafraid to disagree with fellow members of his party, has died. He was 81. “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018,” his family said in a statement Saturday, according to NBC News. On Friday, his family announced that McCain, “with his usual strength of will,” decided to stop treatment for the stage-four brain cancer he had been battling since its diagnosis last summer. “In the year since,” the McCain family said, “John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.” My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year. We keep fighting because we are all McCains, we are a family of a long lineage of Vikings – fighting is what we have always done, and what we will always do.” Born in August 1936 at the U.S. air base in Panama, McCain was the son and grandson of two four-star U.S. Navy admirals. He ultimately followed in their footsteps, enrolling at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1954. As a naval pilot, he was deployed on the USS Forrestal to the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, where he was ultimately taken as a prisoner of war in October 1967. McCain was captured by the North Vietnamese after his plane was shot down by a missile. According to McCain, the plane entered an “inverted, almost straight-down spin,” and he ejected, breaking both his arms and his leg in the process. While held captive at Hanoi’s Hoa Lo prison, McCain was denied medical attention and repeatedly tortured by his captors. “They left me on the floor of a cell for four days, during which time I lapsed in and out of consciousness,” McCain told PEOPLE back in 1992. “Their policy was that they wouldn’t provide any medical treatment unless you gave them military information. I would only give them my name, rank, serial number and date of birth. And so, after about four days on the floor of the cell, they got nothing out of me because I kept passing out.” McCain refused to cooperate, and remained at the prison for more than five years – spending much of that time in solitary confinement. He recalled to PEOPLE, “they treated me pretty badly,” revealing further that he was suffering from dysentery and was being beaten every two hours in order to get him to sign confessions and make audio recordings trashing America. He was released in March of 1973, but still bore some of the injuries from his harrowing ordeal. “Unlike some, I was fortunate that I was able to put it all behind me when I came home,” he said. “People ask me how long did it take to readjust? It took me about 45 minutes. I never had a nightmare or a flashback or anything like that. I know a lot of my friends were not so fortunate, who never fully came back from that experience. But I did.” After returning home, McCain regained his naval flight status and was named the naval liaison to the U.S. Senate in 1977 before ultimately retiring from duty in 1981. During his service, McCain was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other honors, according to his website. McCain was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona in 1982, serving two terms before being elected as state senator in 1986. After more than a decade in the Senate, McCain ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 but lost to primary opponent George W. Bush. McCain went on to become the 2008 Republican nominee for president alongside running mate Sarah Palin; he lost to Barack Obama. While McCain continued to defend Palin’s performance in a new book and documentary set to be released in May, he also said he regretted not picking former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman as his running mate in 2008, according to The New York Times. McCain said “my gut told me” to choose Lieberman instead of Palin and “I wish I had.” Leading up to his death, McCain served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. In July, McCain underwent surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. The surgery went well but had massive reverberations in Washington, forcing GOP Senators to postpone a vote on the controversial Republican bill to replace Obamacare until McCain could return. The senator revealed his diagnosis in July, and one day after doing so he returned to Twitter and promised he’d be back on the Senate floor. “I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support — unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I’ll be back soon, so stand-by!” He said. Just five days later, he kept his promise and returned to thunders applause from people in both parties. While he was welcomed back, he proved to still by The Maverick when he refused to support the Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act in September, which drew sharp criticism from President Donald Trump as others hailed him a hero. After the vote, McCain went back to receiving chemotherapy treatments in Phoenix, Arizona, to slow the progression of the disease. He completed his first round of radiation in August 2017. In December, McCain was hospitalized for “normal side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy,” his office said. But to the excitement of his family, he was able to come home to Arizona for Christmas. In February, Meghan said that her father had a “crazy amazing recovery.” “He is in Sedona, Arizona, right now at our ranch doing physical therapy and he has amazing doctors and he’s doing really well,” she said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “He had a sort of rough time at Christmas and he’s made this crazy amazing recovery which I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at, he is so resilient in so many different ways. He’s a tough bastard.” He continued physical therapy at home in Arizona for the next few months, until he had to return to the Mayo Clinic in April for an emergency surgery. “On Sunday, Senator McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis,” his office said. Meghan added that he was in “stable” condition. Later that month, McCain shared an excerpt from his new book, in which he admitted that his brain cancer diagnosis gave him an “ungentle persuasion” to realize that his current term in office would be his last, and pushed him to change the way he votes. “I’m freer than colleagues who will face the voters again. I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry,” McCain said. “I don’t think I’m free to disregard my constituents’ wishes, far from it. I don’t feel excused from keeping pledges I made. Nor do I wish to harm my party’s prospects. But I do feel a pressing responsibility to give Americans my best judgment.” Before his death, McCain enjoyed spending time on the deck at his Arizona ranch, visiting with a constant flow of friends, including former Vice President Joe Biden, The New York Times reported in May. Biden said the two reminisced about the “crazy senators” they had served with, the overseas trips they took together, and the friendship between McCain and Biden’s two sons. A woman, her best friend, and a quick walk down the aisle?

Lilly Smartelli dreams of marrying her best friend on Valentine’s Day. “Bernie and I have been looking for just the right wedding venue to stage our big Italian wedding,” said Smartelli, 55, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Smartelli marks February 14 on her calendar, not as a romantic holiday, but as a day defined by comfort, happiness and a different sort of true love.

She found all of those things in Bernie, who happens to be one of the main characters in a book she self-published last October called “The $5 Dog Wedding.”

He also happens to be a dog.

“I love Bernie to death and I know he’s going to make quite a handsome groom,” Smartelli said. “But there is one problem where our wedding is concerned.”

The fact that Bernie is a dog?

“No,” she said, laughing. “The fact that we simply cannot afford the wedding we have planned.” Smartelli, a former travel nurse, is terminally ill with a form of pulmonary fibrosis, a respiratory disease in which scars are formed in the lung tissues, leading to serious breathing problems that worsen over time.

“My doctors tell me I have maybe one or two good years left,” she said, “so Bernie and I are racing against the clock.”

Two years ago, Smartelli was enjoying life in San Diego aboard her two-bedroom boat, a 47-foot, 1980 Hatteras long-range cruiser, with Bernie, a hazel-eyed, sandy-haired, 9-year-old mixed breed cocker spaniel poodle; and her other dog, Spinner, a cream-colored, 8-year-old Maltese-Shih Tzu mix who will serve as Bernie’s best man. She had rescued Bernie and Spinner a week apart in October 2011, from the annual Riverside County adoption fair hosted by the Humane Society of the Desert in Palm Springs, California.

She eventually began suffering from shortness of breath, dizziness and fainting spells, which led to a diagnosis of pulmonary diffusion defect,a subcategory of pulmonary fibrosis. She sold the boat and moved to Phoenix, where she began evaluating her life, not knowing how much of it she had left, and came away with one final wish: to know the joy of a wedding day.

“By marrying Bernie in a symbolic way, I could draw attention to organ-donor groups and local animal welfare shelters that lack proper funding,” Smartelli said between labored breaths. So her potential big day will serve as a fundraising awareness moment for the two causes close to her heart. “It’s all in good fun,” she said.

“I know I will never be married, but I would still love to experience the kind of wedding, even if it’s a fake wedding, that I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little girl.”

Smartelli chuckled when she said, “I’ve been involved in just 1 1/2 relationships my entire life,” and sighed when she added, “I’ve been single for quite a while.” She needed a significant other to make her a bucket-list item a reality, so she turned to Bernie, her best friend, to play the role of groom.

“I can’t think of anyone in the entire world who loves me more than Bernie does, anyhow,” said Smartelli, who said she dated a man in Palm Springs for two years before the relationship ended in 2007. (She refers to that experience as “only half of a relationship,” she said, “because he wasn’t half the man I expected him to be.”)

Smartelli grew up in Detroit, where 12 years ago she spread some serious love of her own, coming to the rescue of a childhood friend by donating a kidney to him.

“I thought, if I could do something to help this person extend his life, then why not do it,” she said. “He’s doing pretty well today, and he sends me a card once a year thanking me for what I did for him.”

Chris Stewart, the manager of the Sun City Pet Market in Sun City, Arizonia, has seen her kindness and unselfishness in his store. “She’s really no different than anyone else who comes in here and treats their dogs like members of their family,” he said. “When she’s with Bernie and Spinner, I can see the love she has for them just pouring out of her.”

Smartelli graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, and holds a doctorate of chiropractic medicine from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as a nursing degree from Excelsior College in Albany, New York. She says the experience of sacrificing a kidney “really, truly highlights the importance of donor organizations.”

Before her illness, Smartelli was working as a travel nurse throughout the country, taking eight-week assignments in such cities as San Antonio, Dallas, Albuquerque, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Denver.

Though there is no cure for her condition and no sacrifice that will put time back on her earthly clock, Smartelli said she still hopes to help save the lives of humans and dogs by raising awareness, and money. She has already been donating a portion of her book’s proceeds to Donate Life America, a nonprofit organization working to increase the number of donated organs, eyes and tissue.

“Any ‘wedding gifts’ I receive,” she said, “would go straight to both of those causes.”

She began considering a faux marriage to Bernie in October 2017, when she brought him to a dog groomer in Phoenix and mused: “I may as well marry Bernie. He’s always there for me. He listens, and he loves me no matter what. What more could a woman want?”

The groomer took note. When Smartelli returned later that day, she found Bernie wagging his tail, freshly blow-dried and fluffy, and sharply dressed in a sequined blue bow tie, with a blue ribbon on his collar and a plastic wedding ring and engagement band attached, along with a note that said “Marry Me.”

The moment inspired her. “Just because I didn’t have a fiancé didn’t mean there couldn’t still be a groom,” she wrote in her book. “It might be a little unorthodox, but so had many other choices in my adventurous life. I don’t need to find a man, not when I have Bernie.”

“It was the perfect plan,” she wrote. “How could I have been so blind?” The reality, however, is that there will be no actual event, as Smartelli is barely able to keep up with the costs of her own medical bills.

With her parents deceased and no family members or friends to turn to for financial support, she has managed to keep a sense of humor as she copes with her debilitating disease. “People who see only a headline that says I want to marry Bernie will think I’m totally insane,” she said, laughing. “So I hope they take the time to learn more about my whole story, and the reason I want to do it.”

In the meantime, Smartelli said, she will continue to dream of actually walking Bernie down the aisle, with Spinner as best man, and celebrating with virtual family and friends.

But no matter how the reality of her Valentine’s Day unfolds, Smartelli will ultimately find the true meaning of the day in the company of Bernie and Spinner, just as others who do not necessarily mark February 14 as a romantic holiday on their calendars might instead choose to spend the day in the company of a good book, or by watching a sunrise, or visiting loved ones at a cemetery.

“It’s kind of ironic, but Bernie and Spinner, who are just a couple of rescue dogs, have actually rescued me from a life of loneliness,” said Smartelli, who began to cry.

“I really love those two guys,” she said. “It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without them.”

Bria was a medical mystery. She didn’t qualify for a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s disease or anything similar. Her symptoms were not getting better or worse. Without a diagnosis, the doctor was unable to tell them what her future would look like. All they could do was treat her symptoms. She was diagnosed with epilepsy and prescribed medication. Her brain and muscles were not working together properly. That affected her ability to speak, eat, and walk.

She was paralyzed. The only parts of her body she could move were her head, fingers, and eyes. Technology was always advancing, so maybe one day she could have a computer like Stephen Hawking’s that used the muscles in her cheeks to create text. Mike officially hired a nurse who came highly recommended. She met him and Bria. Her background check was clean and she had compassion for others.

She did occupational therapy and physical therapy at home with her. They stretched her limbs to prevent them from getting stiff. They also worked to improve her muscle strength in her hands. They were going to do water therapy after her cast came off. He also hired a nurse for the evening to morning shift. She helped feed her dinner, take a bath, and get her ready for bed. While she slept, she was on hand in case one of her monitors went off.

Having them there gave him peace of mind. There were times when she forgot to use her machine to communicate, especially when she was tired. It was frustrating because they didn’t know what she wanted or needed, but they remained patient with her. Her seizures made her especially tired. She found out that they happened because signals in her brain couldn’t communicate.

The medication she was taking acted as the go-between. Since she understood why they were happening, it made them a lot less stressful and scary. Her daily routine consisted of exercising, multiple medications that had to be taken at specific times, resting, and multiple tube feedings.

Everything they did was recorded in a notebook that her nurses shared. Mike also went through it. He left notes for them. If she had a seizure, the three of them would know about it. They even recorded meal ideas and recipes, or her moods during the day. She tended to get the zoomies in the evening after dinner. That was when she got a burst of energy and went around the main floor in her wheelchair. She did it until she got tired. Mara thought she looked like a cat running around.

Sometimes the cats rode around with her. They let her enjoy her silliness because she had gone through a lot. She deserved to have some happiness and fun. Sometimes after getting ready for bed, she liked to watch a movie until she fell asleep. Just like a child. She was hooked up to her monitors, so they could detect her heart rate and brain activity.

If she had a seizure or heart problems during the night, the monitors would go off. The nurse was trained in CPR, so she could administer it while they waited for an ambulance. She also made a laminate with her full name, birthdate, medical history, and medications. It also included Mike’s name and phone number. Just in case she was out in public and needed help. It was put into a lanyard and attached to her wheelchair.

I have a traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. I am also nonverbal. I will not be able to answer questions and will need help following instructions. Thank you.

Thankfully, she didn’t have any allergies or issues with food intolerance. That made things easier at the hospital because they didn’t have to worry about giving her something her body couldn’t handle. Phoenix helped out to take his mind off of losing his mother. He also enjoyed spending time with her. She was and always would be his little sister.

He was trained in how to handle her seizures, along with using her feeding tube. She joked she felt like she was eating baby food. Why? Because that’s what it looked like. It kind of did look that way. Was he scared about spending time with her? Yes, he was. He was scared of messing something up and potentially hurting her. While talking to Mike, he learned that he also had a lot of anxiety about taking care of her. It got easier the more he did it.

They were jumping into the unknown with her. They didn’t know what would happen every day. The doctors didn’t know what her future would look like. That was the scariest part. Not having answers was hard, but the doctors could only do so much with the available information.

“What would happen if we all became robots”, he asked her.

“The machine is only as smart as the person using it. A robot cannot feel human emotions. They just follow instructions. They still need humans to maintain them.”

“That’s very true. What if they were like robots that didn’t need humans to maintain them?”

“You would need humans to make more robots. Robots cannot procreate.”

The band laughed, as they listened to their conversation. He thought about that. She was making very good arguments. He had nothing else, so he admitted defeat. Robots make robots, like in a factory. That could be possible, but it would make the world overrun with robots.

After a while, Brad called him back to continue rehearsals. He shook her hand and congratulated her on winning. While they rehearsed, she wore headphones to protect her hearing. They had been invited to perform at Live 8, so they had to practice. She had been invited to join them. They were performing four songs and then another five songs with Jay Z.

She wanted to go, but it wasn’t safe for her to fly. Even with her nurse because of the risk of her having a seizure while in the air. Brad was going to see if they could record it on DVD, so she could watch it from home. It would be on television, but they didn’t know if their performances would be shown. She liked that idea. Thank you. She was very welcome. He shook her hand. During a break, they got to watch as Mike used her feeding tube.

It was connected to her wheelchair. It was a mixture of apples and bananas with oats. It would keep her full until it was time for dinner. As it went through her stomach, she moved her fingers. She usually got tired after eating, so she would likely fall asleep. They could see her starting to get tired. It was almost three in the afternoon, so she would sleep for an hour or two.

If she slept more than that, then they needed to make sure she was okay. Especially since they didn’t have her monitors with them. Mike made a note of the time when she fell asleep. Two hours and fifteen minutes. They checked on her.

She opened her eyes and looked around. Okay, good. Did they wake her up? She was in between awake and asleep. He just wanted to make sure she was alive. She joked that she was alive and as annoying as ever. They laughed. She continued watching them until it was time to go. They said goodbye to her on their way out. Mike got her stuff together before coming over to her. Did she have fun? Yes, very. Good.

His first year at Hogwarts, however, was a hard adjustment. A very socially awkward boy, who was used to running on his own schedule, who inherited his Mother’s determination (or rather stubbornness) had trouble keeping up. While his grades did not suffer Frank had a hard time at first adapting to the new routines, however by the end of first year he found his stride and friends who helped him grow out of his only-child habits. He returned home from Hogwarts, proud of his personal growth during the year, feeling very accomplished. Second-year proved even more fruitful while maintaining friendships and balancing studying Frank, he was really getting into the swing of things. However the summer before third year proved a hard one, his parents revealing his father’s diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) having an immense effect on the family entirely, Frank neglecting his friends that summer and keeping to himself.

However, the return for his fourth year proved a healing one for Frank. Hogwarts helped him cope, and try to focus on his own life, versus his fathers deteriorating one. By fifth-year, Frank had set his sights on the Auror’s office, not truly understanding the amount of work it would be, until he had explained his ambitions to his mother, who readily had his a new study plan for him.

In his following years Frank began to set goals for himself, continuing to excel in studies, and developing a more tasteful personality, one more friendly and fun that made him more appealing to other students; though still having his occasional less than savoury moments or melt-downs when there weren’t too many people around. Finding a new love on the Quidditch team, being appointed as a prefect, Frank was sure to maintain the study habits his mother taught him, saving himself many moments to study, though many more to hang out with friends or partners through his time at Hogwarts. School was a balancing act, and if he managed to stay upright, if he didn’t fall, he would fly. He strived not only to make his parents proud of him but to make something of himself.

In his seventh year while preparing for his N.E.W.T.s (though if you really ask him, he has been preparing since last year) he tried to zone in on studying, feeling the weight on his shoulders grow heavier and heavier until his world came crashing to a halt with his father’s death. He was allowed to return home for the funeral, overwhelmed by his emotions and stress Frank returned to school stunted and numb. He resummed his studying, and tried to go on as if nothing had happened, not allowing himself the time to process his Father’s death until after his N.E.W.T.s where he subsequently broke down, only minutes after finishing the examination. He finished his school year, submitting his application to the Auror’s office, with glowing reccomendations from his professors, and recieved his acceptance letter before graduation. Unsure though at the time whether or not he was going to go, or take a year off, with the way things are, the tensions arising, he’s glad he’s at the Auror office, knowing there is no where else he would rather be.

Danielle and I both had the entire weekend off. We were fully expecting to spend a nice quiet weekend with each other, certainly nothing too crazy. It was supposed to be a micro honeymoon, but it had turned out far different than either of us could have expected. It was a far wilder experience than I could have ever imagined. The day after the surgery was anything but a honeymoon.

I was grateful that I was able to stay with Danielle in the hospital for the weekend. I was able to be by her side almost twenty-four hours a day except for when I grabbed some food. I know it made it easier on her to have me there with her. We were in a huge brand-new hospital with the staff being especially attentive and kind. Everything felt new, and peace surrounded us.

As I mentioned, there was a beautiful garden in the center of the hospital where we were married. The building was several stories tall and located on the North Side of Scottsdale, which is the upper-class area of Phoenix. I’ve never been a huge fan of hospitals, but this one wasn’t bad in my book. It felt like at least we had our little honeymoon suite. We had privacy and some space in the room, even though we weren’t expecting to be there this weekend, it wasn’t the worst place to spend time recovering.

I was also happy because there was a Sprouts Grocery Store down the street where I knew I could buy Danielle fresh organic juice once she could start eating again. I went to the store and purchased all the organic fruit packets I could find. I bought her fresh-squeezed juices and made sure to have some organic oatmeal too. Danielle was very strict about her diet before her diagnosis, so after this occurred, the dietary regulations became even stricter. She had some knowledge of proper diets because she worked as a health assistant for some time with a local MD/ND. The hospital food was far from anything that Danielle would even consider consuming. I did end up making several trips that weekend to purchase everything that she needed.

The first day went as expected, beginning with the nurses waking us up early for the shift change. So far, we had had very nice and helpful nurses. Most were talking to us about chemotherapy because my wife was constantly asking questions. I too had a long list of questions of my own. Most of the advice that we received said to get started as soon as possible. I was a bit concerned about starting treatment so early. Danielle expressed a lot of reservations about any treatment.

From my research, I found that chemotherapy basically stops the division of cells, the hope being that the cancer cells die off first because they have a quicker metabolic rate than our normal cells. I also realized that it stops all cell division, which means it should also halt the healing process. My wife was recovering from the most intense surgery that a woman can receive, she was in great pain, and preparing for several weeks to a month of convalescence. We each had our concerns about what to do next, and we were waiting for answers from the Doctor.

The doctor arrived around 8 am to talk to us about the surgery. We had been anxiously waiting and were nervous beyond all belief. He was a very pleasant and professional surgeon, very truthful and forthcoming with his answers. He immediately told us that it was Cancer when he opened her up. The Doctor was surprised to hear that Danielle remembered anything after the surgery. He told us that no one ever remembered what he told them after they came out of anesthesia. Which is why he told me I would have to tell her. He sat for a moment in amazement at the revelation. The Doctor even asked if she was a trained government agent, she just laughed and said nothing, as he proceeded to explain the surgery.

He explained that he had to make two incisions that went across and up her abdomen. He opened her up and performed the full hysterectomy. Additional exploration showed several inflamed lymph nodes, but there weren’t any significant signs that it had spread. I trusted his words as this was what he did as his specialty; we all felt confident that he had removed any visible signs of cancer. He didn’t consider surgery alone to be enough for her survival. He was dropping the big news bomb on both of our days. He told us that without chemotherapy, she would survive less than a year. This was a big blow to Danielle and a reality check. We were devastated.

Immediately we had questions for him. We were foremost concerned with the side effects of the chemotherapy. Danielle had a bit of a complicated medical history. For my wife, this was also not the first time that she had faced a terminal disease or a life-threatening prognosis. She had at one point in her life suffered from Lupus and Addison’s disease, but both had gone into remission and no longer affected her. She suffered from some problems because of the disease and had to take cortisol, a synthetic hormone, that assisted her when she had Addison’s disease, and her adrenal glands failed. If the lupus were to return, it would cause additional complication.

Another problem being that if she started throwing up and didn’t control it quickly, she would continue to vomit until death. Throwing up might require immediate medical attention. Vomiting and Nausea are the two main side effects of chemotherapy. When we asked the doctor what we should do about this, he said not to worry there were medications to help with that despite Danielle’s reservations about not responding well. The Doctors final recommendation was to try the chemotherapy and see what happens.

My wife and I had discussed before he came in what options we would consider. We both had very strong feelings against full blown chemo. However, the doctor had previously mentioned that there were less harsh versions now available depending on the outcome. I didn’t understand what he meant; this was new news to me. We were hoping the doctor was going to discuss the other options, but the only option he gave was full blown heavy dosage chemo.

During the surgery, he even installed a port into my wife so that they could pour the chemo into her insides. A more aggressive but potentially more effective method of treating the source of cancer. It seemed like a very intense treatment option. On top of that, Danielle was upset that he installed the port in the first place. It made her feel disgusting having something coming out of her. The port never bothered me, I never felt it took away from her beauty. My concerns were on the source of her cancer.

The Doctor only told us he was looking for genetic markers in the Cancer as he didn’t have any other answers as to what caused it. It would take several weeks to discover the results too. He never showed any sign or concern at the cause of the Cancer. His sole and main purpose was to sell his treatment. Encouraging Danielle just to give it a shot, as he explained it was the only option that would offer her a chance for survival. Trust me when I say that the number of times, he reassured us that my wife would die without doing chemo was disgustingly scary.

I had done my research, and on top of that, I had personally experienced the failed chemo patients at work every week. I heard the horror stories. I saw the struggles many of them faced. The hopelessness in their spouse’s eyes, I still didn’t get it at this time, not fully but I started to understand it. I began to see how hopeless the answers were making Danielle — constantly being reminded by the nurses and doctors that she didn’t stand a chance of survival without chemo.

The backlash from the staff, had us stop voicing our disapproval of the treatment options they recommended. Resistance was Futile. It was a group effort we realized we couldn’t compete against and win. They all had the same programming, and nothing we said was going to get them to think otherwise. Hopefully, this book will.

However, I expressed serious concern that they wanted to start treatment the first week after surgery. It upset me how fast the hospital wanted to start treatment while the recovery was still an issue. The doctor conceded that within the first month was fine, but for some reason, the doctor and staff wanted to push for more aggressive treatment. The doctor told us to expect about a two to three-week recovery time from the surgery and that we should immediately start treatment then. I was also wondering how long she would be in the hospital, and he said it would be another four to five days.

The apprehension continued to mount throughout the first two days. Danielle was uncertain about the answers from the doctor, as she didn’t feel that they took her conditions into account. First, she worried that her past illnesses would resurface if she were to do chemo, and in her condition, those problems could cause life-threatening complications. The only solution that they could provide was a long list of medications they use to combat side effects. It was literally if this is wrong, they give this drug, if this happens, they use that drug.

My wife became repeatedly upset because she would have such bad reactions to medications. She had many in her life already that showed adverse side effects; all pain killers would cause severe constipation, while Advil and Tylenol would cause nausea. Then anti-nausea meds would cause seizers. The doctors were facing a complicated patient, but the treatment never changed, the treatment they used was universal, and they never discussed a single other option. This enraged Danielle. She was furious that they hadn’t offered a single treatment option that took her health conditions into account.

I was still caught up on the lack of discovery process involved in the cause of her cancer. It upset me to have no answers to the potential cause of cancer. It felt like more should have been done to address potential causes of cancer, but that didn’t happen either. I anticipated that there might be toxins or chemicals that may have caused it, but there were no tests, no survey, no investigation whatsoever. I left me so angry that I had a difficult time discussing the issue calmly.

Thankfully I received a little reprieve when my mom and sister arrived. Danielle had several friends visit that Sunday too. It was nice that one of her very close friends lived near the hospital. She was able to come by and show some additional support, often giving me a couple of minutes to take a smoke break. I didn’t want to overwhelm my wife with too many visitors or conversations. I could tell after several minutes that my wife was not responding well to my family’s questions. I didn't find it appropriate to go over traumatic experiences in front of Danielle, putting too much stress on her. Danielle’s friend was visiting, so I was able to excuse the three of us.

I thought that grabbing a burger and watching the football game would be nice to get my mind off things. We coincidentally joined the family friend my mom and sister had driven up with at a local restaurant. His wife was strangely enough in the area, visiting a friend who was losing the battle to Cancer. I couldn’t help but feel life had called us together at that moment for support. Synchronicity was playing its cards again, and I couldn’t help but notice that we were all called to the same restaurant. It was a tough time for everyone, but we found comfort in each other.

I said a big goodbye to my sister because she was leaving to teach in Thailand for the year. My mom was returning home to Tucson 2 hours south of Scottsdale. When I got back to the room, I knew my wife was a little upset about my sister and mother’s comments about her having a full hysterectomy. I never thought they would make such horrible comments.

My mom and sister were concerned about the type of surgery and the type of cancer. After discovering it was ovarian and she had a full hysterectomy they were showing immediate concerns. I knew their concerns were that we weren’t going to be having children. I had to tell them that we were planning on adopting anyway to get them to shut up about the kids. Instead, their response was, “Good to hear; we were so worried about that.” Danielle was beyond upset and couldn’t believe they would comment about my wife not being able to have kids.

I didn’t understand the damage and trauma it caused to Danielle since I’m sure she felt bad enough about being robbed of the ability to have kids. This was a very sensitive subject for Danielle, and a source of much immediate sadness. This experience taught me how important it is to be mindful of what we say, and how we say it. Sadly this was just the first of many insane comments that people would say to Danielle that were completely inappropriate or disrespectful.

After my family left, we were back to dealing with the pain. The surgery left my wife unable to move on her own. The first couple of days involved convincing her to use the medications that the hospital had provided because the MMJ wasn’t strong enough to manage all the pain. The MMJ would help, but it wouldn’t make it go away like some of the prescription pain killers could. She needed to rest, and mixing the medications were helping. Still, her fear of constipation was overruling her need to control the pain; she had a high tolerance for pain. It made more sense to her to handle something that she could manage if it meant that a bigger fear could be averted. Danielle did things her way, and there wasn’t a lot I could do to convince her otherwise.

I went to bed Sunday night dreading Monday morning; I was in for the worst case of the Monday’s ever. The reason I wasn’t looking forward to Monday was that I had to work a ten-hour shift in Sedona on Monday morning. Typically I worked normal forty-hour work weeks with four days on three days off. This week I was in for a little more because I switched shifts to have our honeymoon. I would have to work for the next seven days straight.

Monday morning, we were up around five a.m. The nurses started coming in to check on us around 6. I had already applied the topical pain meds that I had bought. We saw better results every day. I was thrilled that it was making her recovery a bit more pleasant. She was still using an occasional dose of the pain meds they had on a drip. She wasn’t thrilled with how it was making her feel as every dose kicked up her nausea. I had to make a quick run to Natural Grocer’s to pick her up some supplies for the day before heading to work. Danielle needed some organic shampoo and conditioner, as well as some more juice snacks. It had to be quick if I was going to make it to work on time.

I promised that I would be back that evening because I wasn’t going to leave her alone a single night. I made a vow that day to always spend my nights with her. I gathered my things together that I needed for the day, and I was off.

I left early enough to miss rush hour traffic at 7:00 am. It was a little more than an hour and forty-five minutes back to Sedona, and I had to work at 10:00 am. I knew that would give me 45 minutes to an hour to get ready and get to work, which was plenty of time. That day at work was particularly hard, I didn’t say much and wasn’t feeling very talkative. Thankfully it wasn’t a busy day, so I was able to send a bunch of “I love you texts to my wife.” After nine hours, my boss let me out a little early. I did tell him about what had transpired, he sympathized. I grabbed everything I had forgotten to grab in our first crazy trip to Scottsdale. I ran by both of our houses, finishing little chores. We did have several days before Danielle would be home.

After I gathered everything, I was back in the car. I made sure to bring plenty of music with me so that I would stay alert. I’ve done some wild long-distance road trips by myself several times, so this just felt like it was going to be a bit of an extended one. I knew I could do it. Life had prepared me for this challenge with many solo road trips.

I’ll mention a notable few. Once, I drove seventeen hundred miles in less than twenty-four hours, making the trip from the Illinois border to Arizona. I also made a twenty-four-hour round trip to San Diego from Tucson to make it to a family reunion, Sunday was the only day I could get covered at work, so I left after a fifteen-hour shift at 3:00 am, then drove five hours to surprise the family at breakfast. I believe only my sister knew I was coming. Sadly I also had to work the following day. So I spent eight hours with the family took an hour and a half power nap and drove another six-hours home. It may not have always been fun, but it was always worth the trip.

My favorite adventure was a day trip from Tucson, AZ to Los Angeles, a short eight-hour drive each way. All to watch a US vs. Mexico soccer game with my roommates. Knowing full well I had to drive back immediately after the game to make it to my 8 am soccer game the following day. A game that we just so happened to win down three players. I guess you could say that long-distance road adventures have tested my commitments to the extreme, and I knew this was going to be one of my greatest tests of commitment. I committed to being with my wife every night, and I wouldn’t let her down.

The first trip back wasn’t a challenge at all. I was so excited to see my wife that my adrenaline just kept me super alert and super anxious. I sent a text or two to let her know my progress, but after an hour and 40 minutes, I was at the hospital entrance. Still had to take the elevator to level 3 and then go to the other end of the building, but I was just so happy to see my wife.

When we saw each other, we kissed and hugged and cried because we were so happy to be together again. It was about 10:00 pm at this point, but I wanted to stay up with her and talk. She told me how her friend from Phoenix had stopped by to show her support. She also talked about what she was going to do about telling the girls in her dance classes. She didn’t want any rumors getting out. I told her that wasn’t something we needed to worry about right now.

One of her friends and the parent of a student showed up over the weekend and drafted up an announcement while I was having lunch with my family. It didn’t reveal anything other than Danielle was temporarily closing the studio because of health concerns. She knew that it was going to make a lot of people worry because so many saw her as indestructible. It was a miracle she survived most of the events of her life, and many of her friends knew this. Danielle was miraculous in every sense. It always appeared like nothing could keep Danielle down, the cat with nine lives. Danielle never wanted to show weakness to the community, a community that she said loves to spread rumors.

Coincidentally, the friend who was now living in Phoenix had to move away from Sedona to avoid small-town gossip. When people make choices with their lives because they lose a loved one, it isn’t right to expect that person to go back to the way things used to be. Loss changes people, and many choose different paths when confronted with death. Danielle and I were reevaluating our situation faced with our new challenges.

To some, it could be a wake-up call; each of us must choose how we deal with the grief. Support is what people need, and asking inappropriate questions, or making any selfish comments are just unacceptable. Danielle wouldn’t stand for it. Sadly, people are so selfish that they would impose their needs or desires above another person’s. Too often, Danielle would push her desires aside to help others; she was the definition of supportive.

Support comes in many forms, it can be a kind word, showing up for someone, a home cooked meal, it can be a simple compliment, or offering to sit down and listen to someone, and when I say listen, I mean listen. Most importantly, any information which is shared is confidential, and should never flow into gossip. Today people spread crazy rumors to feel better about themselves. It is talking about the worst in people versus encouraging the best.

We don’t compliment random people unless they really stand out, but it’s the people who are not standing out that most need the encouragement. It is the homeless person that needs the reassuring word. We give all our energy to the glitz and glamor of life and compliment the pretty people but forget to compliment the person who is trying and struggling. Danielle would see these people and would offer support.

My wife made everyone feel special. I know that was one of the things I loved so much about her. I would like to believe I made her feel as special as she made me feel. It felt like I owed it to her to make her feel extraordinary. To provide the support and understanding she needed most. I felt beyond protective of her and didn’t want her to experience any additional stress from outside sources. We had enough to deal with at the hospital. She was constantly being scared by the nursing staff, convincing her that she needed to do Chemo.

After my first day back at work, my wife’s attitude towards chemo was already shifting. I was a little concerned, although I figured it wouldn’t hurt to get some more information. That night I went to bed on the fold-out couch as I had over the weekend. It was just nice to be with her and show her the support she deserved. We still had our intimate moments, despite the hellish nightmare we faced. It proved our love was deeper than anything purely physical. We had an emotional connection that neither of us had ever shared with another person in our lives. Neither of us had ever known such genuine love, and she knew at that point that I wasn’t going anywhere.

The next morning, I was up at 6:00 am again. Danielle and I spent an hour with each other. We talked more, and we said a lot of “I love you’s.” However, I had to head back for day two at work, and it was another hour and forty minutes home. I threw on some music for another smooth trip home. I Cleaned up, changed into my work clothes and I was back out the door. At work that day, I did a little research on Chemotherapy.

I started with cancer.gov, which is pro chemotherapy. I looked up all the information I could. The main thing I was looking for was more clarification on potential side effects and what we could expect while going through chemo. We hadn’t received many answers that satisfied my wife or me for that matter. I knew that no matter what we decided, we were going to make an incredibly informed decision. I read all the material that they provided on the website and printed out the information that I thought Danielle would want to read as well.

I thankfully got out of work early the next night as well, and I was heading home quick before going back to Phoenix. I was still feeling good and was ready for another trip back down the mountain. I packed up some snacks and hit the road. At this point, my wife was always anxious and wondering when I would be there. I arrived around 9:00 pm and was able to spend a nice evening rubbing the medicine into her feet. It had become somewhat of a ritual that I would give her a foot massage every time I applied her meds, well since I didn’t use gloves, I guess it was both of our meds.

I know at the time that I did use Medical Marijuana for anxiety, sometimes sleep, and for pain as well. I have used it more often recreationally, but I understood the medicinal benefits as well. The application of the Rick Simpson Oil, it was having a calming effect on me too, which was a good state for me to be of service. Danielle needed me to be calm, cool, and collected, because I was her rock, for the times when she couldn’t be calm and collected.

Four Days after her surgery, she stopped using the prescription meds, she was constipated, which was a common side effect she had from those meds and the anesthesia. She also had developed a bad case of ascites, which is when there is fluid buildup in the abdomen. The doctor recommended that they install a drainage port to take care of the issue. So my wife would have to be put under again for them to install this. I would have to say that the anesthetic they used gave her the worst side effects. The nurses constantly reminded her that it would take several weeks for that to clear the body. It was going to make her feel completely awful all over again having to go through this procedure, and they were going to do it the next day.

That night we discussed a little more about the treatment options. She was becoming increasingly supportive of trying chemotherapy. It was quite the shift for her considering that initially she had said there was absolutely no way that she would be doing chemo, but She didn’t want to tell them that. We felt forced to play along with doing the traditional treatment. Now she wasn’t playing. Danielle was serious about Chemo.

I pulled out the information sheets I found from the American Cancer Society; it was a lot of information. The first and most important thing I thought we should go over is the Side Effect Worksheet that is used to monitor and tell how you are responding to the treatment. It was literally four full pages of nasty side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation (yeah you can get both apparently), swelling, allergic reactions, and about twelve other side effects that all list levels of severity. We were supposed to use it to track her negative reactions.

Danielle’s immediate response was, “Fuck That.” She proceeded to say that most of the side effects and the main side effects were practically fatal with her pre-existing conditions. If she started throwing up ever, we would have to go to the ER, and they would have to administer a drug that helps her stop vomiting but makes her feel horrible. A coworker and neighbor confirmed to me that he had to take her non-stop puking to the ER one night. He definitely made it sound about two hundred percent funnier than it was, but that was just the type of guy he was, always making jokes.

Danielle and I decided it was probably best not to tell the Nurses that she wasn’t interested in doing chemo. If she did, it was clear that they were going to continue to pressure her into doing it. They practically scared my wife into starting chemo; thankfully, she didn’t succumb to the fear, and her rational mind won over. I should also say that according to the most recent statistics at the time, stated that she only had an eight percent chance of survival with chemo or radiation. I have noticed the statistics have drastically changed to closer to forty percent. Eight percent didn’t inspire hope.

The hospital could not provide most of what my wife needed and didn’t carry chemical-free, organic, or non-GMO food. The hospital couldn’t give her any information on available alternative treatments. They wouldn’t discuss alternative options even though over one hundred different alternatives have been shown to fight cancer in one way or another. I knew it was in Danielle’s best interest to get out of the hospital.

However, we had a problem. Danielle was still constipated. It had been about five days at this point, so it was starting to become a concern. The next day she had to go under for a small procedure, which meant more anesthesia. Creating more worry about the continued constipation as a result. The nurses reminded us that she hadn’t eaten enough to have a bowel movement.

We tried to get some sleep that night, but we both found it rather difficult. Most of our nights had been restless, and by day three of work, I could feel a bit of the emotional exhaustion. I was wiped out, but at least I had the drive and some music always to allow me to re-center myself to be the best I could be for my wife.

The following several days were very similar; I was driving every morning back to Sedona for an eight to nine-hour shift then hopping in the car to drive back to Phoenix to spend the night with my wife. Friday was the big exception, I didn’t work early in the morning, but I also hadn’t gone out looking for a new job either. I was slightly more concerned about making more money at this point. Especially considering we were facing the cost of alternative treatments which is never covered by insurance. I knew I needed to make more money.

I left a little later that morning around ten a.m. to head back and get cleaned up so I could apply to several restaurants. I was completely exhausted at this point and didn’t have the energy for job hunting. I didn’t have an option, and I needed to find a better job. I wished at this point in my life that I had a more stable foundation because much of this additional stress was because of financial need. It was an added stress because we were going to be out her income for several weeks, according to the doctor. I was seeing that it could be even longer than that for her to be able to teach again. So I decided to do what I could.

The first place I applied to was the restaurant at the end of Danielle’s street. I figured the menu and the style of dining was a perfect fit for me. I walked in and asked to fill out an application. I sat down at the bar and started filling it out, soon afterward the owner walked in. I said hi and introduced myself and told her that I had just married Miss Danielle.

Right away, she was impressed and told me that she absolutely loved Danielle. I didn’t feel it was the time to tell her what had happened yet. At once, she gave me the job, but I knew I still had to fill out the application for her records. I was so happy that at least I had accomplished what I came home early to do. I immediately went home for a needed nap before work that day.

After a five-hour shift, I went home. I was truly feeling the exhaustion setting in, and I was starting to worry about the drive. I wasn’t feeling my usual strong, vibrant self. Facing exhaustion, I couldn’t give up now. I hate to admit, but my secret weapon for extended road trips is nicotine or cigarettes typically. I gave up chewing tobacco seven years ago, but it wasn’t until I met Danielle that I was able to kick the smoking tobacco addiction. She made it easy, and after six weeks, I could really use one.

The stress was getting to me, and the need for a cigarette was at an all-time high. I knew I could safely drive anywhere if I had a little nicotine. I broke down and bought a pack of cigarettes. I wanted to keep it a secret and fully intended to give them up as soon as I was done driving like crazy. Loaded with my secret road trip weapon, I made it safely to Phoenix that night.

I brushed my teeth when I arrived and went up to see my beautiful wife. I am sorry I haven’t mentioned it more, but when I say she was beautiful, she was still beautiful. People couldn’t believe how lovely she looked, especially after her surgeries. Danielle always maintained that natural inner attractiveness she had inside. Even though Danielle was tough on herself, she would always get the best compliments from everyone who met her. Most said they wished they looked half as good when they weren’t sick. It was cute but still made Danielle feel like she was still missing some of that allure because of the circumstances.

We had another great evening together, but I also tried to get some rest. I had brought up all the orgonite that I had made and put it in the room. I immediately noticed that I slept better when it was in the room versus when it wasn’t. I made sure to always leave it in the room with Danielle because I’m sure it was helping her too. For those unfamiliar with orgonite, it is a substance that can be made using metal shavings, a resin, and crystals that helps protect from harmful EMF radiation. The radiation from all the devices was unavoidable in the hospital.

Most people tell me that they sleep better when they put a piece orgonite next to their bed. I never had a sleeping problem until now. I needed the rest, and so did my wife. I knew that I needed to do what I could to assist. The first night we both slept was the first night I brought a bag full of orgonite in the room. I later decorated the room with tons of pyramids. The addition had created a noticeable difference in my ability to sleep.

When we woke up on Saturday morning, it was another beautiful sunny day. We always seemed to wake up around sunrise. It also gave us an hour or two to talk before I had to go to work. I left that day, knowing that it looked like Danielle would be released on Monday. It brought me a lot of relief because I had Monday and Tuesday off so I would be able to take her home.

The next two days went without a hitch, and finally, Sunday night arrived. I was just relieved to have completed my endurance challenge for the week. It was nice just to know that we were likely to be discharged the next day. We could finally return home together.

We woke up with high hopes that we would be able to get out of the hospital quick. It ended up taking about five hours longer than expected but at least when we were able to leave Danielle was doing much better. The previous ten days had been enough, and she was pulling together all her strength for the car trip home. She was still suffering from extreme pain from the surgery, it had done a number on her, and the ascites was still causing severe discomfort too. My only goal was to make it home safe. I took it slow, making it home in about two hours.

We made it back to my house that evening around eight p.m. It was fantastic to get her settled into bed finally. I made sure to double dose her with medical marijuana. She was able to start eating the MMJ by this point, which was better for sleep and anxiety. I had to be careful not to give her too much because she didn’t enjoy being “super stoned,” as some might put it. In the evenings, it was a very useful tool to help her sleep and rest her thoughts. My home would be our new home. We had a journey of recovery and healing ahead of us.
