Be Home Soon [ calum hood ]
w.a.h series | pt.1 | word count: 3,912 | masterlist
Tumblr media
Sometimes, when you let your mind wander, you would come back to a thought that encompasses every other question you'd asked yourself in the last few years.
Where would you be now, if yours and Calum's lives hadn't merged when they did?
You admittedly hadn't had the best of weeks upon the day you had met Calum in Los Angeles. Being a graphic designer from the same side of the world as him though, it was easy to find a mutual connection.
Before sitting down in a waiting room at Interscope records, your week had been filled with paperwork. Paperwork that basically piled around your ankles as you waded through all the necessary documents to confirm your new life away from where you'd always known as home, New Zealand.
Not only was the stress of the move on your shoulders, but the stress of your new job was too. It almost didn't matter that you had gotten your bachelors degree, because nothing could prepare you for the first day on your dream job.
It was this first day on the job that you had met Calum, being sent to the same waiting room as him while you waited on your supervisor and he waited on his band mates, him being the first to arrive.
You'd recognized him instantly, and heard your boss in your head telling you not to get starstruck in front of the clients. Seeing it as your first major test, you let your shoulders relax, sitting down on one of the couches opposite him and setting your bag down by your feet.
"Morning." You smiled politely, looking over to him as you noticed him glance up at you from his phone.
He stalled for a second as he looked at you, just long enough for you to notice before he spoke.
"Morning." He replied, a small smile on his face as he nods in your direction.
Feeling like you handled the interaction well, you gave yourself a pat on the back mentally, opening twitter to catch up on whatever you'd missed overnight and this morning. As you scroll though, a text notification comes up on your screen, letting you know that your supervisor is running late in a meeting, and will take a little longer than expected.
You let out a soft sigh before you stop scrolling, letting your phone rest on the couch beside you and pulling out your smallest sketchbook while you wait.
"Hey," the man from across the room asks, catching your attention and making you look up from your pencil case, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but is that your dog on your phone case?"
You hadn't prepared yourself to actually converse with someone yet this morning, but you could feel your face light up as you flip your phone over beside you, showing off the picture of your most favorite dog in the universe.
"It is, yeah. Her name is Ayla. Normally I have flowers in my case but I had to take them out when I was coming over here and the first idea I had to replace it with was my favorite girl." You laugh lightly, handing your phone over to him so he could see the sweet neo mastiff on the back of it.
His face breaks out in a grin as he looks at the Polaroid in the back of your clear phone case, and you do your best to ignore the flutter in your heart at the sight in front of you, his bright grin helping clear the clouds that had been covering your week.
"She's adorable. My boy Duke is probably about the size of her head." He laughs, handing you your phone back, "If you don't mind me asking, where is your accent from?"
You're surprised with his question, mostly because you didn't expect to be having a conversation with him, but also because you were sure your accent wasn't that pronounced.
"It's from New Zealand. Born and raised." You smile proudly, and this time, it's his face that lights up.
"Can't believe we're practically neighbours, though I thought you sounded familiar." He admits, leaning back in his seat while you smile with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, they do always say aussies and kiwis can find each other anywhere."
He nods in agreement, and from there, it doesn't take you both long to start talking about your home towns, sharing your experiences about childhood snacks under slightly different names, the shows you'd both end up getting months after they had already screened in the US, and of course the numerous sports rivalries between your countries.
The ease in which he made you laugh felt different than your normal interaction with strangers, and as you shook your head, telling him about the extreme culture shock you felt walking into a supermarket to get your first load of food after moving, he could feel a wave of calm and familiarity coming from you that made him feel nearly instantly comfortable in your presence.
The conversation flowed easily, and as you saw your supervisor approaching while in the middle of talking about how long of a flight it is between Austrliasia and America, you felt kinda disappointed you'd be leaving your new buddy.
Once your supervisor collected you, you said your goodbyes to Calum, walking off towards the office space you could now call your own.
As you walked off with your supervisor, Calum's eyes followed you, taking a moment to catch a breath he didn't realize he'd lost.
You'd been talking for easily less than thirty minutes, but there was something about you that made Calum wish you would walk back around the corner again to tell him more about your life.
He kicked himself for not getting your number, only knowing your first name and that you're a graphic designer, but nothing that would help him contact you again.
The only thing that snapped him out of his thoughts was Ashton walking into the room, crashing down onto the couch beside him.
Little did he know, but you were feeling exactly the same as you sat down in your small office space, cursing yourself for not having the guts to ask him for his number, not wanting to seem like you wanted something from him.
There was a part of you that wanted to run back out to the waiting room, the hopeful side of you thinking there was a chance he'd still be there.
Something about leaving him back in that room didn't sit right with you, and before you could talk yourself out of it, you stood up from your desk, walking back through the hallways to the waiting room.
As you reached the entrance, someone else did too, and you bumped into someone solid that sent you wobbling back a few steps, the person reaching out to steady you.
Looking up from where you had been watching your own determined steps, your eyes widen as Calum stands in front of you, hands on your upper arms to steady you, shock crossing his face before a string of apologies fall from each of your mouths.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry-"
"I'm so sorry are you okay-"
Cutting each other off, you laugh lightly nodding at his question after a second.
"I'm fine, really. I was actually coming back here to see you so I'd say this worked out." You laugh, scratching the back of your neck nervously as he lets his hands drop to his sides.
"Really?" He asks, a small smile on his face.
"Yeah, I uh," you shrug slightly, "I would really like to hear more of your stories. Honestly, you're really interesting to me, and you haven't shown me your dog even though I showed you mine so I think you owe me." You joke, and feel your heart back flip as he bursts with laugher.
A wide grin covers his face as he nods, pulling his phone out of his pocket and unlocking it before handing it to you.
"You have a good point, and I'm glad you find me even half as interesting as I find you." He comments, looking down at your phone that you'd swapped him but still managing to make you blush as he typed his number in.
Taking a quick selfie to set as a contact icon, you save your number under "waiting room kiwi" before handing him his phone back.
The connection you felt that day did anything but sizzle out, evident by what happened after your phone first buzzed with a text from him later on that night.
With two years passing since you met, you and Calum had experience with distance from each other, being in a relationship since your chaotic first date that lasted a lot longer than anticipated, after a lost wallet sent you on a wild goose chase, knowing from that day on that you were both very much meant to be in each others lives.
Whenever you could, you would make the journeys necessary to be with each other. It was hard sometimes, fighting off the thoughts that the distance would affect your relationship negatively, but you did your best to remind yourself, and to remind Calum, that even when things were hard, you would always have a home in the other's arms when you could finally hold each other again.
With you basically living with each other while Calum was home recording Calm, it felt like you'd actually had a moment to breathe and just exist around, and with one another.
But then the pandemic hit, and everything shifted from slow motion into fast forward. With only two days to decide if you would be staying in California or going back to your families, you spent more than half of those 48 hours with tears in your eyes as you did your best to help each other pack what you could of your lives into suitcases, not knowing when you could come back.
It was the hardest decision you had ever made together, the decision to be away from each other for God knows how long.
Calum gripped your hand with a tight grasp nearly the entire 23 hour flight from California to Auckland, almost like he was trying to commit the feeling of your hand in his to his deepest, most permanent memories.
With a last "I love you" between tear flavoured kisses, your heart ached as you watched Calum's flight leaving you in Auckland while he traveled on to Sydney, and even the arms of your parents and siblings couldn't stop the aching in your heart you as you felt the distance between you and the man you love grow every second.
You sat between your older brother and sister on the way home, not far out of the city you'd only been back to a few times since moving to the States.
Calum spent a large percentage of time on his flight to Sydney with his eyes closed or cast down to his phone, flipping through pictures of your lives together before things became so uncertain and unpredictable. He knew it would make him feel worse in the long run, but with no end in sight to whatever you could even call his current situation, all he cared about was the fact he just had to say goodbye to the woman he loves.
Upon landing and seeing his big sister waiting for him from her own flight home a day earlier, Calum basically crumbled into her arms, searching for any ounce of comfort he could before they made their way back to their home.
You and Calum loved your families, and wanted to protect them and be there for them, no matter how much pain you caused yourselves.
Being at your childhood home for only hours before lock down took effect felt like the most absolutely wild fever dream your mind could come up with, but as you gathered around the TV every 1pm, the reality of it all started to sink in.
Though the first few days of being separated, you and Calum had a hard time finding space between family bonding sessions to phone each other in any capacity. You would spend hours together on facetime in the middle of the night instead, you watching him noodling with songs from the new album just around the corner, or him watching you reorganize a room you hadn't had the chance to since your teens before one of you would inevitably pass out.
With time blurring together the days quicker and quicker, the only thing that reminded you what day it was, was how many days since or how many days til it was Great British Bake Off night.
One night, the feelings of the world hit you harder than the others.
The shine of being home had quickly worn off, and sleeping became harder and harder without your boyfriend beside you like you had been used to the last few months.
With your exhaustion and situation hitting you all at once, you could barely breathe as tears ran down your face as you sat at the end of your childhood bed on the phone to Calum, doing your best to hide your current state from him as you covered the speaker with your hand.
"-and I just can't get zoom to work at all. I 'ave no idea how kids are meant to be using this for school when I can't even get it goin' to call my mate a dickhead." Calum complains, his example making you laugh, which is soon followed by an all too telling hiccup.
Hearing that small sound barely picked up by your phone made Calum freeze, tense energy immediately flowing through him.
"It's cause your WiFi is shit, babe." You laugh, but are confused with the silence you're met with on the other end.
"Babe?" You question.
Calum lets out a sigh, your quietness over the last ten minutes of your call making sense to him as things started to click.
You would only ever hiccup on two occasions, one, when you were close to blackout drunk, and two, when you had been crying.
"Darlin', you don't wanna be hearing me complain about technical issues, do you?" He asks, his heart aching as your following silence told him all he needed to know.
"I'm just happy to hear your voice, actually." You say in a soft voice, a fresh wave of tears falling down your cheeks.
Calum had to blink away his own tears at your words, inhaling as deep a breath as he could.
"This is fucking horrible." He comments, and you scoff lightly, nodding even though he can't see.
"You've got that right." You agree as you look down to the rug under you, faded from years in the sun that was nowhere to be seen as autumn's clouds quickly turned into winter rain. "I don't think I've ever missed someone so much in my life."
"Next time we're in a pandemic, we're going to Michael's." Calum adds, trying and succeeding in making you smile.
"On the way out I'll grab Moose and South, then we'll just have to steal Petunia to get the A team together." You laugh.
Calum takes a moment to drink in the sound of your laughter, knowing it had been few and far between these days, yet it still sounded like music to his ears just like the first time he'd heard it.
As your shared laughter dies down, you can hear Calum take a deep breath before he talks again.
"I didn't know I could be homesick for a person."
And with that, your heart breaks even more than it already has been.
You stay on the phone to him for a while longer before your mum calls you for dinner, leaving him with a promise of a text later on in the night.
You join your family after cleaning up your face, but take it you didn't do the best job as your brother and sister offer to do the dishes while you go back up to your room, telling you you'd looked too tired for it tonight, and hell, they weren't wrong.
Crashing down onto your bed, an idea flashed through your head as you stared at the ceiling above you.
While you'd never been one to really verbalize your feelings and emotions, you were the kind of person who knew how to get their emotions down onto paper, or in this case, into the text box to your boyfriend's number.
Hey sweetheart. Honestly, I swear sometimes you know me better than I know myself. You were right, as normal, things have been harder than I've been letting on. But because I know you and how that head of yours works, I didn't want to fill your mind with worry when so much is going on around us already. There's a large part of me that wishes we weren't as self sacrificing as we are, even though it's obvious to anyone that we're always the ones choosing the ones we love over ourselves. Things are way too scary for me to think about for too long and I hope you're doing better at distracting yourself from thinking about it than I am right now. I'm not as good with words as you are, love, but I feel like if this time apart shows me anything, it's that you're the best thing I've ever had the honour to hold, and god I'm dying to hold you again and never let you go. I could say I miss you and I love you in a million different metaphors and references, but sometimes simplicity is best, and I miss you, and I love you, so so fucking much. I'm more homesick now than I have ever been in my life. Not for LA, not for here, not for anywhere in the world, apart from the space beside you. You have my heart darlin, and you are my home. Good luck with your game of monopoly against Mali, though I gotta be honest I'm backing her on this one. Goodnight, I love you, and I'll see you (onscreen) tomorrow, honeybee.
Upon hitting send and rolling over as you close your eyes in hope for some resemblance of a full night's sleep, you couldn't have even imagined the pounding Calum felt in his chest after reading your message three times over before finally looking away.
Walking into her brother's room, a sad and understanding smile appears on Mali's face as Calum's attention pans to her.
"Rain check on the game?" She asks.
"Yeah, thanks." Calum clears his throat.
Questioning her movements for a moment, Mali moves forward into the room, sitting down beside Calum and wrapping her arm around his shoulders. It wasn't hard for her to see how much this was affecting him, both of them being as close as they are, and Mali wished she could fly you over herself to ease the heartache you were both going through right now.
"I'm gonna ask her to marry me next time I can see her again." He says, a finality and certainty to his words.
He was entirely serious, too. After this was over, Calum never wanted to let you go again, not like this. He was well aware of all the things he'd been lucky enough to do in his life, but you by far were the person who convinced him just how lucky he is.
You had his heart, and he had yours.
Mali just smiled as she comforted her little brother, knowing this was going to come from the first day you spent in the Hood family home when you joined them for Christmas two years prior. The ease at which you fit into his family was like you were meant to be there all along, and the looks shared between Mali and Joy during that period of time showed they were both very aware of that.
After promising to shift their game forward a Day, Calum is left on his own again.
Laying on his bed, staring at the ceiling, he doesn't quite know how to reply to the text message still sitting open on his phone.
He couldn't hug you through text, and knew no other way to comfort you like he wanted to, apart from the one thing that always made your heart beat at a different pace, apart from him, which was something he was capable of: music.
Picking up his acoustic guitar from the otherside of the room, Calum sits down behind his desk, phone propped up against his computer screen as he opens the camera.
Looking up to the ceiling, he takes a deep breath, collecting himself before he starts.
Gaze falling down to his hands again, he starts to slowly pick out the chords to the first song that came to his mind, the perfect song for you.
Upon playing out the final chords, Calum can feel the tears rolling down his face falling onto his shirt, wiping them away with the back of his hand that feels nothing like the soft touch of your fingers before throwing on a hoodie and walking downstairs to sit with his family, deciding against the solitude he knew would swallow him completely if he didn't do something about it.
Somewhere deep inside, something's got a hold on you.
And it's pushing me aside, see it stretch on forever.
I know I'm right, for the first time in my life.
That's why I tell you,
you'd better be home soon.
The crisp air of a morning soaked in an approaching winter wakes you earlier in the day than you would have hoped.
Fairy lights strung around your room still shined from last night, hung by your brother upon being bribed to help you earlier in the week, you not being bothered to turn them off before falling asleep.
You couldn't say you slept well, but you were grateful for anything at this point.
Rolling over, you pick your phone up from your bedside table, scrolling through a few notifications before landing on the text messages sent to you from your friends during the night, the good morning texts sent to you at two am reminding you of the time difference you were struggling with.
Your heart leaps as you see a message from Calum, remembering your own message from last night and the word vomit it contained.
You tilt your head in surprise as you sit up in bed, seeing a simple text saying "I love you too" sitting under your text to him, a video sitting under the message causing your interest to be pique.
Hitting play on the short video, your heart drops to your stomach and tears well in your eyes, the tune instantly recognisable.
After all, you had both been hearing it all your lives.
Tears flood down your face as you play the video over and over again, shaking your head as you wipe away your tears on your hoodie.
"Little shit." You laugh through your tears, knowing he would know exactly the effect the video would have on you.
Hand covering your mouth to soften the sound of your sobs, you lay back down again, curled into a ball in the middle of your bed as you feel the weight of thousands of miles press down on your chest.

Summary: This story is about Feyre. She has a couple of small dreams she wants to achieve but turns out it isn’t as easy as she imagined it would. Trust me, the story is better than the summary. Modern AU. Feysand.

Chapter 18: He's back
December 2019
More months passed as Rhys and I did better than ever. Everyone knew we were together and I loved that. Just that day we'd been talking about moving in together. I couldn't think of anything more thrilling than that. Rhys had started opening up to me lately, though he never told me exactly what had caused him to become so closed off, so guarded. I never pushed. It had taken so much from me to tell him about Tamlin.
Tamlin. I had managed to get him out my head. Until this month. Every other day, I'd imagine him around a corner or in a crowd, but when I looked back, he was gone. I felt like I was being followed, watched at, but when I glanced around, no one was there. It was making me paranoid. Frightened. Each time, I told myself I was just picturing him. He couldn't possibly be here, in California. He was in Auckland, far away from me. But then why did I keep seeing him?
Kicking the thoughts out of my head, I didn't let any of that come between Rhys and I. The only thing I could do was be with him and make sure he knew I was always there for him. That he could come to me whenever he wanted and talk to me about anything.
We were at the movies that day. It was late, around 8 or 9 in the evening. The nights were colder now and it got dark quickly. I had three layers on underneath my thick coat. Just as we reached the doors of the cinema, he said, "I'm gonna go to the bathroom. Meet you outside." His hand slipped out of mine as he walked back towards the bathroom and I smiled at his back before heading out of the building. Outside the only sources of light were the bright street lamps and the full moon. A sharp breeze was blowing. I could feel it on my face like pins and needles and my nose was going numb. It was tolerable for the first couple minutes, but then I started breathing into my hands and putting them against my cheeks in an attempt to warm them up. Then I heard someone call my name from behind me.
My mind went blank at the voice.
Memories went through my head. Kisses, hugs, smiles, dates. Everything and more.
His name echoed in my head, with words like 'run' and 'danger' also running through my head. It would sort of look like this if the words were physical.
Tamlin danger run run run not safe Tamlin danger run danger not safe not safe not safe run run Tamlin Tamlin Tamlin.
I watched as the words skimmed from left to right, over and over. I knew I was in danger; I knew Tamlin could hurt me any second, that I wasn't safe. But I just couldn't run, no matter how much I wished too. My limbs were frozen, unwilling to move. "Hello, Feyre." He said, smiling wickedly and coming to stand in front of me.
I shivered, not from the cold, and squeezed out the words, "Hello, Tamlin."
"How are you?" He asked as if we were still friends, as if I hadn't left him because he'd let me get raped. But those words brought me out of my trance. I was able to move all of sudden because I was angry. I was angry at him for putting me through all that heartbreak, angry at myself for freezing, angry at the law that hadn't thought it necessary to put this man behind bars. But no more. I refused to be weak, unable to fight for myself. And so before he could realise what was happening, I kneed him in his groin. "Fuming, you fucking asshole!" I said as he fell to his knees, groaning. I kicked him in the stomach, causing him to go farther down. And then I just kept going and going and going. I vented out everything, and it. Felt. Glorious. "I'm angry about what you did to me. I'm pissed!" I said as I kept kicking him here, punching there. "I'm angry at myself for letting you put me in that position. Do you know what he did to me? He fucking raped me. Do you what that is? Sex. He forced it on me. And you let it happen. You fucking let it happen, and I will never ever forgive you for that. I will not let you put me through something like that ever again. I will not be weak again. You'll never have me." I said laughing, half with hysterics and half with adrenaline, and finally stopped my assault on the son of a bitch. I had started attracting an audience, but I just shot them all of them a wide smile, probably looking like a crazy woman who needed a trip to the mental asylum. I didn't care. Tamlin was at my feet. I hadn't let him scare me and I was proud of myself for that.
It was then that I noticed Rhys, walking towards me. He stopped dead about five metres away from me, but he wasn't looking at me. Instead, he was staring at Tamlin who was groaning in pain, blood dripping from various parts of his face where I had punched him many times. Looking back at Rhys, I noticed how pale his face had gone. I'd never seen his face so immobile. It worried me. I kicked Tamlin again, making sure he wasn't getting up anytime soon and walked over to him. Bringing my hand up to his cheek, I said, "Rhys?" His eyes stayed glazed for several seconds, before he finally blinked a couple of times, and brought his eyes to look into mine. I swallowed, once again struck by just how beautiful his violet and silver-flecked eyes were, despite the tears brimming in them. Drops of tears started falling from his eyes and I moved to wipe them away with my thumb. He swallowed, and it looked as if he had to put in a lot of effort to force the words out, but he finally did it. "Tamlin killed them. My family." His shoulders shook with tears and then he was full out sobbing. He fell to his knees and I went with him. I didn't pressurise him into telling me anything else. I knew he would when he was ready. So I did what I could. For several minutes we sat there on the pavement, my arms wrapped around Rhys, rubbing up and down his back, as he cried. He'd held himself so strong and so closed off from the rest of the world, and now it was coming all out. I was so damn curious to know exactly what Tamlin had done, and I knew whatever he'd done was bad, really bad, but I held my tongue. And then several more seconds later, I watched as his sobs finally subsided and he reached into a pocket to get his phone out, and I listened to his side of the conversation. "Hello? Officer Wu? It's Rhys…Yes, it's Tamlin. He's sort lying unconscious in front of us…Um, my girlfriend beat him up?… We're in Palo Alto, at the cinemas… Yes, that one…okay, thank you." He hung up, turning to me. "The police is coming. I'll tell you the rest later." His eyes still had a haunted look but they were definitely more aware now. I nodded giving him a close-lipped smile, and we settled in, waiting for the police to arrive. They arrived in less than ten minutes and soon we were watching as the officers handcuffed a near unconscious Tamlin and lugged him into the car. An Asian officer—I'm assuming the Officer Wu Rhys had been on the phone with—came to talk to us. I gave him a summary of what had happened, which in turn caused him to warn me against assaulting people for no reason, but thankfully he let me off with just that and a knowing glance at Rhys. Soon after that, the police were off, taking Tamlin with them.
We both let out a huff of breath in relief once the car was out of sight before turning back to walk towards our car. Rhys was silent the whole drive back home, but finally, just as I put my hand on the handle to open the car door, he grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me into a kiss. It was frantic and rushed and passionate. He pulled me over the console and I settled in, straddling his hips. His mouth moved down to lick my jaw, to nibble on my earlobe, to suck on my throat. His hand slipped underneath my shirt, and he moved his arm to wrap around my back, pulling me even closer. We were both panting, not wanting to let the other go, but eventually, we broke apart with a gasp and tried to get our breath back. He leaned his forehead against mine and we breathed in each other's scents. We were finally breathing normally when he spoke. "I'm sorry, Feyre." I immediately opened my mouth to object, shaking my head, but he stopped me with a thumb to my lips. "No. I need to apologise. I'm sorry for what he did back there. He must've seen me hanging out with you, and was trying to get back at me by hurting you. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." I stared at him in astonishment, confused by his words.
"What do you mean, get back at you through me? He knows me from high school."
"What! What are you talking about?" He jerked back, looking straight into my eyes.
"I mean that he was in my high school. He was the person…my boyfriend." He stared at me, his face showing only shock. And slowly, I watched as that shock turned into anger. He started cursing loudly at Tamlin's name, and I told him to stop but he wouldn't listen, so I kissed him. That shut him up. "And why would Tamlin want to get back at you? What happened between you two?" I reminded him of my original question. I heard his breath catch, and he looked down. Lifting his chin with my finger, I saw his eyes had started watering again. Blinking the tears away, he said in low voice, his head going back down, "I guess I have to tell you now." It sounded as if he were talking to himself. He sighed and looked up at me. "Come on, let's go inside. I'll tell you there." As we walked up to the front door, I shyly asked him, "Would you stay tonight?" He smiled at me, though the corners of his eyes didn't lift, before nodding. I smiled widely, happy that he was staying despite everything that had happened tonight, and gave him a peck on the cheek, before hurrying up to the door and unlocking it. Mor, I knew, was already sleeping in her bedroom, so we were careful to stay quiet. "Why don't we get ready for bed first, and then I tell you how I know Tamlin the Tool?" He said and I smiled at the nickname before nodding.
Fifteen minutes later, I found myself lying in Rhys's muscled arms, my cheek on his warm chest. He was wearing a plain, worn-out t-shirt and sweatpants, which he had left here the last time he was over. His hand was hooked around my back, and I felt it as he took a deep breath, preparing himself for whatever was to come. Placing my hand over his heart, I could feel it racing. I moved to kiss his neck, wanting to calm him. I settled down again and I knew he was smiling as he kissed my hair, taking in my scent. And then he told me.
"It happened in the winter break, a couple of years ago. There were three of us. Tamlin, Amarantha and—what's wrong?" He said lifting my chin, a small frown on his face. I'd jerked at the name 'Amarantha'.
"Amarantha was one of my teacher's names. Amarantha Smith." I told him, my voice sounding strangely dead. He pressed his lips together in disdain, nostrils flaring. "Let me guess. Red hair, black eyes, slutty nature?" I nodded. "Guess they stuck together." He said, shaking his head in disgust. I sighed, realising Tamlin and Miss Smith had been together the whole time. It just made so much sense. Rhys carried on after a few seconds of silence. "Anyways. Amarantha was my girlfriend." My nose scrunched up involuntarily. Rhys noticed. "Hey, it wasn't my fault. I was stupid and young. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I thought I loved her. And maybe I did at that point, but obviously, she didn't. All she cared about was the money." That last part was to himself, his voice shaking with anger. He shook his head. "You'll see what I mean, later on in the story." He sighed. "Tamlin was her "brother" and my best friend. Or at least, that's what they led me to believe. And I did. We did everything together, us three." He paused, obviously regretting the time he had spent with the two. "I'd known them for about two years, before that night. They were staying over at my house, nothing new. They'd stayed over plenty of times, and of course, not once at theirs. When I questioned them about it they shut me up with their lies and excuses. Their father was a drunk addict, the house was under renovation, no food. All lies. And I, of course, believed them." I could hear the anger rising in his voice.
I said, "Hey, it wasn't your fault. You didn't know. And they must've been great at lying. It's what they do. They lie and lie and lie, but that doesn't mean it's your fault that you didn't realise. None of this is your fault, you hear me?" He stared at me, and then just carried on, clearly not agreeing with any of what I'd just said. I huffed, frowning, but let him continue. "I'm not gonna stretch it out. Tamlin was sleeping next door and Amarantha beside me. A gunshot woke me up, followed by a scream. I run out of my bedroom, barely processing Amarantha's absence. And then there she was. Amarantha, wearing her silk, purple nightgown," Tears poured down his face but his voice remained steady. "A gun held high in her hand pointed straight at my loving mother. I watched as she fell right down in the threshold of her bedroom with a thud." He was silent for a few seconds, sniffling and gulping as he tried to stop the tears from escaping. "The bitch must've panicked or something because when she saw me and it was clear that she'd shot my mother right in front of my eyes, making me a witness, she shot me too." His hands lifted his shirt and I looked down to find a round scar. The bullet wound. I looked back up as he pulled his shirt back down. "I collapsed from the pain, and soon I was out of it from blood loss. The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital. It was two days after that night. Officer Wu, one of the many who were a part of the investigation that happened afterwards, told me what had happened. Tamlin and Amarantha were criminals with long records. He had raped my sister and killed her afterwards, while Amarantha stole all of Mum's jewellery and the money we had saved up from the safe. A neighbour had called the police at the sound of the gunshots but by the time the police got there, both of them were gone. My mum and sister who had meant everything to me were dead and I was following closely behind. But they found me in time. Got me to the hospital. And no matter how hard the police tried, they couldn't find Tamlin and Amarantha. It was like they had disappeared off the face of Earth." He paused, swallowing hard. "Until now."
"My father was often away for his job and when he came home to find his wife and only daughter dead… He died soon after. From grief, I suppose. Mum and he had always been crazy in love and he had been sick for some time at that point, anyways. It only took a month and then he was gone too, leaving me completely alone." He paused again, swallowing as he got his emotions in check. "That winter break, I stayed in that wretched house, just staring at the tv or the stain of blood in my sister's bedroom or the spot where my mother had fallen. I only left the house once in about three weeks to get some groceries. I talked to no one. I isolated myself from the world." He paused. "A week before I was supposed to start college, I heard a knock on the door. I ignored it at first, but when they didn't go away, I opened it. It was Mor. I hadn't seen her in months and then all of sudden there she was, in front of me, hugging me. She brought me out my isolation a little but still, I didn't talk to anyone at college. Mor was still in high school. She wasn't there with me to force me to socialise. Halfway through the year, Cassian came up to me. We became the type of friends who always fought. And then Azriel came. He was constantly alone in college, and one day Cassian and I decided to talk to him. After that, we just clicked. I started thinking them of as brothers, as…family. I was scared though. I had already lost one family. I didn't want to lose another. I talked to Mor about it. She had already met them by then and helped me get rid of the fear. And then Amren came into the picture—she and Mor were friends from high school and before long, we were the Inner Circle, as we like to call ourselves. I had a family again." He looked down at me, tears brimming in his eyes. "I had a family." He repeated, his voice cracking. I just wrapped my arms his neck and kissed him.
I said, "You have a family, and they love you very much. Don't be scared. They love you. They won't ever leave. I swear on my life. They will never ever leave you." I kissed him again, slightly longer this time. Things were getting heated, but then suddenly he pulled away, a nervous look in his eyes. "Feyre, you know how I said the Inner Circle are my family, right?" I nodded, confused. "Well, since you and I love each other, you're a part of that family. You know that, don't you?" I looked at him for a few seconds before nodding, a light smile on my face. He smiled back at me and kissed me, flipping me onto my back.
Deepening the kiss, I wrapped my legs around his hips, pulling him closer to me. His hand on my hip, he groaned, bringing his lips to my neck, my ears, temples. He kissed every part of my face, and I groaned in desperation. I could feel every pore on my face burning as his lips passed over my face. And then he moved on and the fire was replaced with ice-cold air. I needed to feel him, to touch him. I wanted him. My hand drifted underneath his shirt and he groaned, pulling back far enough that I could easily pull the t-shirt of him. Now naked in front of me, I could see his chest rising and falling in great big gasps. Slowly I brought a hand to touch his chest, breathing deeply. He was pure muscle, hard and rippled. I felt one of Rhys's hands squeeze my hips and looked back at him. "I want to see you," He said softly, hesitantly. I nodded. My hands went to the rim of my shirt and he stopped me, getting there first. As he slowly pulled my shirt off me, he whispered in my ear, "I want to be the one to do it. Let me do this, for you, for myself. Let me—" His voice cracked—"let me touch you."
I cupped his cheek and met his gaze. "I love you, Rhys. I will for as long as I live. I want this. I want you." A ravenous hunger had started building in his eyes and I watched as my words set him on fire. He kissed me on the lips, softly whispering, "I love you too, Feyre." And then he unleashed the beast in himself.
We were a tangle of limbs, kisses, groans, moans and sweet, whispered nothings as I marked him down his back, his arms, as he devoured me.
Moaning, our clothes came completely off and he, with heart-breaking gentleness sheathed himself inside me. Once I was accustomed to him, he thrusted with that same gentleness and I came trembling and sobbing as we kissed. He kept moving and I screamed his name, as I came once more, his roar of pleasure mixing with mine.
We fell asleep in each others arm, my head nestled in his arm, his other arm wrapped around my waist. I could feel his hot breath on my ear and his soft snoring. I woke in the middle of the night, overheating from his warmth and gently unwrapped his arm from around me. Once I'd found a comfortable spot again, I let myself look at Rhys's resting face. Not a single wrinkle or blemish marked his face. He was mine and I was his. Looking at him in that moment, I knew where ever he was—that would be my home.
AN: Hello. My story's come to an end, did you know? It's the end and I find it so surreal to think of how far Feyre has come since the beginning of her story. I hope her actions in my story have motivated you to keep going, to never stop no matter how hard things can get sometimes. I've always had high expectations from myself and they more often than not take a huge toll on me mentally and physically. But still, I keep going. Because if I don't, there's no point in living. That's the way I think, at least. You may have different views but I think anyone and everyone could use a little push in their life. I hope my story was that little push for you. I hope Feyre motivated you to keep going because to keep going means you'll eventually find that little or big thing you started your journey for and the happiness I'm sure you'll feel at the end...that happiness is worth all the trials and turmoils life will throw at you. It's worth it. Trust me, I know. You just have to keep going to find it.
Also, I do have a little more planned. It's really sweet and I would tell you what it is, but I want to keep it a surprise. It's not necessary to read the rest of the chapters but I think you'll want to if you've already stuck with me so far. I'll upload them all on the same day, as soon as I've edited them. Thank you so much for reading until the end. I appreciate it and you more than you could ever imagine.

Farmhouse Diaries - Day 1
Written during my self-enforced second quarantined (after the government enforced one) at a farm house, an hour outside of Auckland.
24th March 2021
I had barely remembered which side was gas and which was brake before I turned out onto the main road, but off I went. And it all came back to me instantly. God, it feels good to be behind the wheel after such a long absence - 2 and a half years, was it? To have that control over a machinery bigger than myself, to have control over how fast or slow I go, especially after being holed up for 2 weeks inside a hotel room. With the wind in my hair, the Rav4 and I glided along the motorway, through windy country roads and eventually arrived on the little dot on the map.
The first things I saw was what looked like a pheasant darting into the bush. I unlocked the gate and saw lots of feathers on the ground. “Might do some pheasant hunting” I thought to myself. This was also when I noticed that my phone signal was barely there. I couldn’t send any txt or internet messages, nor could I call. Will I be cut off from the outside world in my entire time here? The house looked a lot more neglected than I thought. Tall grass blocking the entrance. On the ground floor were many small prison-sized rooms, each with one or two beds. The second story was a lot nicer, which put me at ease. Some of the furniture looked really new, but the arrangement, the decoration, and just the general way things were can only be described as tasteless. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere. I was told there might be rats, so that’s the first thing I looked for. There were rat trapping trays on the floor with no signs of rats, however there was a big dead bird on one of them, I don’t know what type of bird it is, but it’s the size of a small pigeon. Not sure how it got in the house, but by the amount of small droppings all over the place, it was probably trapped in the house for quite some time before finally landing on the sticky tray of death. Maybe the people who were last here couldn’t get it out and just decided to leave it to nature. The minute I turned away from the dead bird, I noticed ANOTHER dead bird, this time outside the house, right in front of the entrance. A small green silvereye. Maybe it hit itself against the window and died from the impact. Anyway, the house was already giving me the creeps, and these two birds were just the creepy icing on top of a creepy cake.
I got back in the car and drove around to find cellphone signal to no avail, but my messages to C did get through eventually, they were just hours late. Walking along the dirt driveway I saw signs of broken eggshells, and some feathers too. It looked like some animal stole the eggs and ate them there. Maybe there was even a little struggle too. Thank god New Zealand doesn’t have any scary mammals out in the wild. Cats and stouts, that’s about it.
Tumblr media
It was getting late, I heated up the food C’s mum made me, then chose the biggest bedroom to crash for the night.

Broken Happy Ever After / Jin x Reader
Tumblr media
Overwhelmed by the sudden realization that this life was not as easy as it had first seemed, you choose to put an end to your marriage, despite loving Jin with all of your heart. However, he’s not going to let you go without a fight.
Pairing: Jin x Reader
Warnings: strong language, A N G S T, but also some fluff i’m not an absolute monster
Words: 6k.
Request: Hey! Could you do a scenario with Jin ? It's about him and his wife (the reader) ? A sasaeng aggressed her and she was so traumatized that she decided to divorce and start a new life, somewhere away from Seoul, but Jin kind of managed to make her stay ? (Angst) 😋
Thank you for requesting this! I hope you enjoy!  🖤
Tumblr media
You haven’t slept well on Sunday night, which is why this Monday was twice as difficult for you. Obviously, you regretted staying up so late, but once you went on Twitter you hadn’t been able to stop scrolling. And soon enough, you found an entire hate account dedicated to you.
You knew Jin didn’t like it when you read the hate messages some people sent you and usually, you stayed clear of them but that night you just couldn’t. Curiosity got the best of you and you weren’t in control of your actions when it was 2am, so you clicked on the account and for the next two hours proceeded to torture yourself by reading the hateful tweets that were apparently submitted by different people.
You knew Jin had fans who weren’t particularly fond of you. After you two got married, the number of such fans decreased, but there still were some. Or so you thought. That night you found a whole new world of people who hated you with passion.
This realization hit you so hard that even after you managed to go to bed and feel the warmth of Jin’s body next to yours, you still couldn’t close your eyes, every single hateful tweet replaying in your head over and over.
When you woke up that Monday morning, Jin was already gone but he left you a post-it note on the pillow on his side of the bed like he usually did. Smiling for the first time in nearly twelve hours, you picked up the note to read it.
“Good morning, my beautiful wife (I’ll never get tired of calling you that). Have a great day. Can’t wait to see you in the evening. Love you. Your husband (Jin).”
You chuckled at the last part of the note. Just this simple gesture - a note that he probably wrote at the last minute before leaving - managed to make the pain, that you felt the whole night, go away in a matter of seconds.
You carried on with your day then, not even feeling the exhaustion of the sleepless night you’ve had.
Work was difficult that day. It seemed as though everyone wanted the impossible from you and then got angry at you for not delivering it. You felt like you were going crazy and you couldn’t wait to go home.
And then your car broke down. You couldn’t even drive out of the parking lot of your office. Annoyed, you called the service to pick the car up. At first, you thought you’d wait for them to come, hoping for a lift, but then you realized you’d freeze if you stood in one spot, waiting. And despite it being cold, it was a beautiful night. So, feeling like you could use the twenty-minute walk from your office to your house, you decided not to wait any longer and deal with your car tomorrow.
Just as you started to walk, your phone began to ring. Before picking it up, you noticed that it was your travel agent calling.
“Yeah?” you picked up, a little surprised.
“Hello, Y/n, it’s Mina. I’m afraid there’s been some complications with your trip,” she said, making your stomach sink. “Can I explain and offer some alternatives?”
Your and Jin’s first anniversary was coming up and ever since the wedding, the two of you have been dreaming about a trip to New Zealand, which is why you decided to surprise Jin with tickets to Auckland as an anniversary gift.
“Yes, please. What’s wrong?” you asked, already feeling like this Monday was the worst one you’ve had in a while.
“You see, the airline that we were using has bankrupted and—”
Suddenly, you heard two female voices behind you and stopped listening to what Mina was saying on the phone.
“She’s probably on the phone with some guy.”
“Knowing how big of a slut she is, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was on her way to meet some guy right now.”
“Poor Jin. I can’t believe that he doesn’t see through her.”
You stopped breathing when you realized that those two girls were really talking about you. Clutching the phone to your ear tighter, you decided to speed up and hope they will just walk away.
“—which is why I think it’d be best to postpone the trip,” Mina concluded on the other end of the phone.
“Wait, postpone it?” you suddenly asked. “I can’t postpone it. The trip was supposed to be a gift. Is there any other alternative?”
“Uh, let me check,” Mina said and you heard her start clicking buttons on her keyboard.
Meanwhile, the two girls behind you were getting louder, indicating that they were now closer to you.
“I kind of want to talk to her, you know? Like, tell her how much of a worthless bitch she is to her face.”
“Good idea! Maybe she’ll finally understand that she doesn’t deserve Jin.”
Your heart was in your throat when you heard the sound of running. Suddenly, you saw one girl on each side of you. You tried to calm your breathing and avoid panicking.
“Actually, Mina,” you interrupted the travel agent. “Now’s not a very good time, I’m on my way home from work. Can I call you back in just a few minutes?”
“Sure,” Mina replied and you hung up the phone instantly.
Carefully, you slid the phone into the pocket of your coat and turned to look at the girl on your right.
“Can I help you?” you asked her, trying to keep your tone neutral.
“Yeah,” the girl answered. “Why don’t you just fucking die, bitch?”
Your heart hammered in your chest as the other girl laughed at this.
“Seriously,” the girl on your left started. “Who the fuck do you think you are, always acting like you’re so much better than everyone else? You think just because you managed to seduce Jin, now you’re the queen of the whole fucking world?”
“I’m sorry,” you said. “But I really have to go.”
“Oh, that’s cool,” the first girl said. “We’ll walk with you. Get to know each other. Bond a little. Do you mind?”
“Actually—”
“Of course she minds, Hanna,” Girl #2 interrupted you. “She’s too good for us, remember?”
“Look,” you stopped walking and turned to look at them both. “I’m sorry you feel that way. I really am. But I have stuff to do and I need to be on my way.”
“Oh, so we’re bothering you,” the first girl, Hanna, said as she took a step closer to you. “Don’t you think that’s kind of hypocritical, considering you’ve been a pain in our asses for the past… how many years was it? Four? Five?”
You almost corrected her by saying that it’s been six years – not four or five – since you met Jin but chose to stay quiet, so as to not add more fuel to the already blazing fire.
“I hope you know you’re a huge fucking bitch,” the second girl added. You tried to start walking again but they blocked your way. “And there’s not a single person in the world that loves you.”
“Can I please just—” you tried, only to be interrupted again.
“Die? Yes! About time you do that!” Hanna snapped.
Afraid of their close proximity, you tried to unlock your phone without getting it out of your pocket so you could call the police if things escalated.
“We’d help you with that,” the other girl said. “But we don’t want to get our hands dirty. I’m sure there’s someone else who’ll do it for us, though.”
You weren’t breathing anymore, afraid that if you moved a single muscle, they’ll do something far worse than just harass you with words.
“Scared all of a sudden?” Hanna said, noticing that you’ve been frozen in your spot. “Good. It’s time for you to understand your place. You’re nothing. You hear me?”
You stayed quiet as you watched her walk even closer to you and stop centimeters away from your face.
“Fucking answer me, you slut!” she yelled into your face.
You closed your eyes but stayed quiet, not being able to get a word out due to paralyzing fear.
“Now she’s going to pretend we don’t exist to her,” you heard the other girls voice.
“Fucking bitch,” Hanna added and then – despite not seeing her do it – you felt her spit on you, her saliva landing on your scarf, right below your face.
You flinched in horror as you opened your eyes and managed to see both of them laugh loudly and walk away from you, giving you the middle finger while you still stood in the same spot, unable to believe that this actually happened.
When you finally managed to walk again, you chose to call a cab, fearing another similar encounter.
The taxi driver picked you up in five minutes and he tried to make small-talk with you the entire ride to your house but you stayed quiet, only nodding or shaking your head politely.
Once you finally got home, you could tell that Jin was already there because you saw the light in the kitchen from outside, and because once you entered, incredible smells – that partially soothed your shaken up heart – greeted your senses right away.
“You’re finally back!” Jin exclaimed when he heard you lock the door. “Did work hold you back tonight?”
You saw your husband exit the kitchen and walk down the hallway to give you a kiss on the cheek. The sight of him in his favorite red apron always made you smile lovingly, but you didn’t even notice if the apron was on today.
“Y/n,” he said, after having pulled away from you. “Are you okay? You look really… weird.”
“I’m…” you started but then stopped, not knowing if you should be telling him what just happened. And if you should, then how? “Can we talk?”
“Talk? What happened?” Jin asked, suddenly alarmed. “Oh, God, if you’re breaking up with me over something stupid that I did, then please don’t. I swear I didn’t mean it. It’s because of the phone charger of yours that I broke, isn’t it? I’ll buy you a new one, I promise—”
“Jin,” you stopped his seemingly endless tirade. “It’s not that. And by the way, I didn’t know about the charger.”
“Oh,” Jin swallowed. “Forget it then. Let’s go to the kitchen. I’m almost done with dinner.”
You nodded and followed him to the kitchen. As he finished preparing the meal, you slowly told him about arguably the worst Monday of your life. He listened patiently while you talked about the stress of work, the anxiety of your car breaking down, and the utter fear of the two girls who harassed you.
“And you’re sure they were fans?” Jin asked once you were done.
That was not the question you were expecting from him.
You shrugged your shoulders. “It seemed so. They mentioned your name multiple times.”
Jin sighed. “No, but see, ARMYs don’t do that. They’re not… they’re not like that.”
“Okay,” you chose to agree with it, never wanting to stand in the way of him and his fanbase. “So they weren’t fans. They were just obsessed with you.”
Jin bit his lip as he thought about this.
Seeing how difficult it was for him to find the right thing to say, you chose to speak instead.
“Look, I’m not telling you this because I want you to do something about it because I understand that there’s nothing to be done,” you said. “I just don’t want to keep secrets from you.”
“No, I get it,” Jin nodded. “I just find it hard to believe that someone would actually do this. I mean, it sounds ridiculous. Are you sure they weren’t just talking to each other and you sort of—”
“Jin, they spit on me,” you said with wide eyes, not being able to believe that he was doubting your story. “They literally blocked my way, yelled at me, and then spit on me. I’m pretty sure I didn’t imagine that.”
“Okay, okay,” Jin said in a voice that showed you he wanted you to calm down and that riled you up even more. “I understand. I’m just saying that maybe there’s a logical explanation why—”
“A logical explanation?!” your voice was visibly raised now. “Since when is harassing strangers on the street logical?!”
“Well…”
“Are you... actually trying to justify their actions right now?” you asked, staring at him in disbelief.
“No, honey, of course not,” Jin told you in a soft voice. “I’m sorry this happened to you. I guess I’m just trying to find a way to explain this because it makes no sense.”
“You’re damn right it doesn’t!” you shouted. “But that doesn’t mean it needs an explanation. Those girls freaked me out. I’m not asking you to hunt them down and get them arrested—”
“Well, what are you asking me for, then?” Jin interrupted you, his voice louder, too. “Do you want me to apologize to you for their actions? Fine! I’m sorry they claim to hate you!”
“They don’t—they fucking threatened to kill me, Jin!” you have lost all patience right now and groaned as ran your hand through your hair. “I don’t care about the hate I get, okay? I mean, of course, I care, it makes me sad, but it doesn’t make me scared for my life. These girls said, and I’m quoting, that they’re sure there’s a person who’ll kill me, so they won’t have to get their “hands dirty.””
“Maybe they’re children, they don’t know what they’re—”
“They looked my age!” you countered before he could even finish. “And sure, maybe they can’t suffocate me with their bare hands but there’s guns, Jin. And lots of other weapons.”
“Guns?” Jin raised his eyebrows. “Don’t you think that’s a little extreme?”
“It’s not extr—okay. I’m done,” you said, turning around to exit the kitchen. “I don’t want to talk about this with you anymore. I’m going to bed.”
“Y/n, come on—”
“Don’t. I want to be alone.”
And Jin made this wish come true.
He only knocked on your bedroom door when it was time to go to sleep and by this time, you had already fallen asleep and he didn’t want to wake you, so he just quietly got into bed next to you. He stared at your sleeping features for hours, soundlessly apologizing for not being there for you.
Tumblr media
When you woke up the next morning, Jin was gone again. The memories of your fight last night flooded your brain as soon as you saw the empty space beside you. You felt bad about not making up last night, but also you’d be lying if you said his indifference to the attack didn’t hurt you.
Jin’s post-it note was on the pillow again and with a racing heart, you reached out to pick it up.
“Good morning, love of my life. I’m so sorry for everything I said last night. I wish I could apologize to you out loud but you look so beautiful when you sleep, I don’t want to wake you. Call me when you wake up, please? I love you so much. Kisses, your husband.”
You could barely read the last few sentences due to him using smaller letters so the whole text would fit into the note.
Not wasting any time, you picked up your phone, calling Jin immediately.
And you stayed on the phone with him for two hours. You were already in your office by the time you finished the phone call – actually, you only finished the phone call because your boss was giving you angry looks and tapping her wristwatch to show you that it was time to get back to work. Jin claimed she was just jealous of your love and that made you laugh, cheering you up even more.
You had high hopes for today. Jin promised to pick you up and take you to a restaurant to make up for the fight and you weren’t going to say no. Also, you finally rescheduled the flight to Auckland, and you thought the dinner with Jin was the perfect place to announce the trip.
Once you finished work, you exited the building to see Jin already waiting for you with the biggest grin on his face.
“There’s my wife!” he yelled loudly, despite standing ten feet from you.
You laughed as you approached him and allowed him to hug you tightly as if he hasn’t seen you in forever. Then, he opened the passenger door for you and jogged around the car to sit behind the wheel.
The trip to the restaurant was filled with light-hearted banter and Jin’s favorite dad-jokes that somehow never failed to make you laugh (both of you thought this was why you fit so well together).
The entire dinner was just as fantastic. Jin was a gentleman and you kept teasing him about it but he said he just wanted to show you how much he loved you. And he successfully did that. You were smiling all throughout dinner, not even thinking about anything that caused you pain the previous day. The news that you had booked a trip to New Zealand for your anniversary seemed to remove the smallest traces of last night’s fight that there could have been left. Jin basically picked you up and spun you around in the middle of the restaurant, after you told him about the trip.
A few hours later, before heading home from the restaurant, Jin stopped by the bathroom and you stayed in your seat to finish your dessert.
Suddenly, right as you were about to put the last spoonful of cake into your mouth, someone dragged your chair back. Confused, you raised your head to see a girl, staring at you.
“Excuse me?” you asked, awkwardly watching as she released the back of your chair and walked around to face you.
A few people from nearby tables have turned to look at what was happening and you started to realize that this girl was not good news. Besides smelling like she just finished drinking the entire bar of the restaurant, she also looked like she was about to snap your neck in half.
“Can I help you?” you asked her quietly, already looking around for security to notice this encounter, but none of them seemed to think that the girl in front of you was dangerous.
“Actually, yeah, Y/n. You can,” the girl said and right as you were about to stand up and walk out of here before any drama could start, she extended her hand and placed it on the back of your chair, above your shoulder, pushing you backward harshly.
You fell back with your chair, groaning when your back hit the floor and going dizzy for a moment from the impact. You heard the people around you gasp and put their cutlery down.
The fear you felt when you saw the girl climb on top of you and roughly throw you off the chair so you were lying on your back on the floor, was evident in your eyes, and that seemed to fuel her.
“I want you to fucking die, you stupid bitch,” the girl screamed as she grabbed your hair and pulled at it with all of her might.
You screamed in pain and tried to kick her off of you, but she proved to be a lot heavier than you were.
“Don’t fucking fight me,” she snapped at you, suddenly releasing your hair and standing up from you. “You’re the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. I’m going to fucking kill you for what you’ve done. You thought you’d just get away with marrying Jin? You thought everything would be over? Well, guess fucking what. Now it’s time you get what you deserve.”
Right as she said those words, she kicked you in the thigh. As you yelled in pain and rolled over to your side to grab your hurting leg, she kicked you in the back, knocking your breath out of you.
You heard her yell something but no more kicks came. You couldn’t see anything because your tears have blurred your vision but based on the other voices, you assumed someone pulled your attacker away from you.
The pain in your back was so severe that you couldn’t stand up and you were breathing in quick shallow breaths, feeling your lungs ache with every intake of air.
“Y/n,” you heard Jin’s voice. “Y/n, baby, can you look at me?”
You tried to roll onto your back but this movement caused you even more pain, so you just shook your head, while you tried to control your tears.
“Should we call an ambulance, sir?” a different voice asked.
“Yes, please,” Jin answered him and you felt his hand touch your shoulder. “Can you sit up, love? Is anything broken?”
“I c-can’t br-breathe,” you managed to whisper.
“Baby, just hold on,” Jin said, his voice full of concern. “The ambulance is on their way, okay? And I’m right here. You’re safe now.”
You wanted to tell him that you weren’t safe. That you’d never be safe. But you couldn’t. You couldn’t talk at all, not to mention breathing. Your entire body ached but most of all, you felt so unexplainably broken that you just wanted to disappear.
The ambulance arrived at the restaurant ten minutes later and by then, you had already managed to sit up and breathe with the help of a yoga instructor who – by a lucky coincidence – was having dinner in the same restaurant.
The police were next to arrive. They arrested your attacker and took Jin’s contacts so he could press charges later.
Jin accompanied you to the hospital, not releasing your hand the whole way there. You still weren’t talking and the doctors put an oxygen mask on you so you wouldn’t pass out from the lack of air your lungs were receiving.
Forensic medicine examiners looked at your injuries and wrote everything down, already preparing for the court process since they had no doubt you’d sue your attacker.
Luckily, no serious damage was done. Your lungs weren’t punctured, so you resulted in a few bruises on your leg that caused it to swell up slightly, and a large bruise on your back from where the girl had kicked you.
However, due to the fact that you still couldn’t breathe properly, the doctors wanted to keep you in the hospital, but you just wanted to go home, so they had no choice but to let you go.
Tumblr media
Once Jin helped you lie down in your bed at home, the panic you’ve been feeling ever since the attack sort of subsided. You felt really exhausted but you were too shaken up to sleep. The doctors had prescribed you sleeping pills but you didn’t feel like taking them, especially not after you took so many pills to relieve the pain.
“Would you like some water? Tea?” Jin asked but you shook your head both times. “Can I do anything else for you, baby? Tell me anything.”
“Nothing,” you said. “I don’t want anything.”
“Are you feeling any better?”
“Well, kind of. I took a lot of pills.”
“No, I mean… emotionally,” Jin said awkwardly.
You weren’t sure how to explain what you were feeling.
“I’m afraid to feel anything,” you admitted finally. “I thought last night would be the last time someone harassed me on the street. But then the same thing happened tonight and… God knows how many more times it might happen again.”
“Wait… you think these two attacks are related?”
You stared at him, dumbfounded. “I thought that’s obvious.”
“W-Why do you think the attack today is related to the one yesterday?” Jin asked.
“Because both of these people were your fans?” you answered in a sarcastic tone.
“N-no,” Jin shook his head. “I told you, my fans would never do this.”
“Okay, Jin. You love your fans. I get it. But I don’t know what else to call the people who love you so much that they think it’s okay to attempt to kill me.”
“They—wait. She just pushed you, she didn’t—”
“She just pushed me?” you frowned. “I can’t believe you actually said that.”
“No, I’m just saying that she didn’t try to kill you, she just—”
“She literally said ‘I’m going to fucking kill you’ to me, Jin,” you told him, unable to believe that you two were having the same argument for the second time in a row.
“Right but—”
“You finish this sentence, Jin, and I swear to God, I’m not sleeping in the same bed with you,” you told him with a dead serious expression. “I can’t believe you’re defending a person who just attempted to beat me to death in the middle of a public restaurant.”
“Baby, you’re going through a lot of emotions right now. I’m not defending anyone,” he insisted.
“Oh, you’re not? Then why do I keep hearing you make excuses for her?” you asked, angrily. “I don’t care if this girl worships you, as long as her way of proving her love to you, is by abusing others. Do you hear me? I won’t tolerate violence and I would appreciate it if you didn’t either.”
“I don’t tolerate violence,” he said, looking down. “I’m just trying to tell you that maybe it wasn’t as bad as you imagined it.”
You sat on the bed, unable to breathe and think clearly because of the injuries you just suffered and here he was, the person that you were supposed to trust with your life, telling you that maybe your injuries weren’t that bad.
“Leave,” you told him. “Get out. Right now.”
“W-what?” Jin looked at you with a scared face.
“You heard me. I don’t want to look at you right now. Get the hell out, Jin.”
“Y/n—”
“Fucking leave, Jin!” you lost control suddenly.
Jin, scared of your outburst, got up from the bed and approached the door of the bedroom slowly. He turned back to look at you and saw you hug your knees closer to your chest while you hid your face from him.
He knew you were crying. But he also knew it was best to leave you alone when you asked him to. So he did.
Sitting there, alone in your bedroom, you’ve never felt more betrayed. You couldn’t understand why Jin wasn’t taking your side in this situation. You tried to think rationally and not play the victim but Jin clearly thought the attack wasn’t serious, even though your mental well-being was probably damaged for the rest of your life.
Finally, after a tireless night that you spent crying softly into your pillow, you’ve decided what you’ll be doing next.
Tumblr media
When Jin quietly entered your bedroom the next morning, he had expected to see you still asleep. He wasn’t expecting to see your suitcase on the bed. He wasn’t expecting to see you with your head stuck in your closet, throwing your clothes out, either
“Y/n..?” he asked, confused. “What are you doing?”
“Packing,” you replied shortly.
“Yes, I see that,” he said. “But why?”
“I’m leaving.”
Jin felt his heart drop. “W-what? What do you mean? Where?”
“Anywhere.”
“What?” he entered the room and walked towards the closet, so he could see you. “Y/n, what are you talking about? Where are you going? Why?”
You stopped packing for a moment. With a sigh, you turned to look at him.
“I can’t stay here when it no longer feels as if we’re each other’s main priority, Jin,” you told him. “Last few days showed me where your priorities truly are and I respect that. But I don’t understand and I’m no longer willing to question your logic. I’m done.”
“D-done?” his voice started to shake.
“Done,” you repeated. “Maybe we shouldn’t have gotten married.”
This was the final blow that forced his entire world to collapse around him.
“Y/n, no. Don’t say that. You can’t say that. You know we love each other,” he said, desperately trying to get you to see.
“I thought so, too,” you said. “But real challenges in life show how true that love is.”
“And now you think ours isn’t true?”
You stayed quiet for a moment and then sighed again. “I don’t know what to think.”
“Well, stop, then,” Jin asked, taking your hand into his. You wanted to pull it out of his grip but he just held onto it tighter. “Y/n, please, let’s sit down. Let’s talk about this. I don’t understand what’s happening.”
“I don’t understand what’s happening, either!” you said, roughly pulling your hand out of his. “One moment I’m talking to my travel agent, planning a romantic getaway for our first anniversary and the next, I’m being brutally beaten in a restaurant by obsessive fans, while you sit back and defend them!”
“I…” Jin opened his mouth to speak but he was at a loss for words.
“I knew this wouldn’t be easy,” you said. “You told me that from the start. And I put up with a lot. A whole fucking lot, Jin. But I’m not going to listen to you say that the attacks I’ve suffered weren’t serious because they were. I won’t allow you to tell me otherwise.”
“I’m not!” Jin said, his eyes already filled with panicked tears. “I love you more than life, Y/n, and seeing you hurt broke my heart. I just can’t believe there can exist such people who would purposefully want to cause so much harm.”
“Well, you’re living in a dream world, then, Jin. Because, newsflash: murderers are very real and, apparently, they live right here, under our noses.”
“Okay,” he nodded. “I was wrong. It was naïve of me to think that we’d be safe from the hate of the world if we didn’t believe it existed. I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry.”
You stayed quiet after this. You didn’t know how to tell him that it was too late to apologize. You had already made up your mind to leave.
You got up from the bed to walk to your suitcase so you could finish packing.
Jin watched you move with sorrow in his eyes. “Y/n, please don’t go. I can’t lose you. I can’t.”
“And I can’t stay,” you answered. “It’s breaking my heart, too. It feels like I’m dying, Jin. But I just can’t stay.”
Jin jumped from the bed and ran towards you, falling to his knees right in front of you.
“Y/n, I swear, I won’t survive it if you leave me. I’ll do anything you want me to do. Please, just don’t go,” he begged, hugging your knees and pulling you closer to him.
“Jin, stop,” you said, trying to get out of his grip and nearly falling off because he was holding you so tight. “It’s too late. You can’t do anything. I already know your point of view—”
“No, you don’t. You don’t know anything,” he continued, tears already rolling down his cheeks. “I called the police last night. I’ll be going over there today to press charges against that girl from the restaurant. And I want you to come with me so you could describe those girls from the street the other night. I want you to get a restraining order against them.”
You listened to this patiently, knowing that this was just a drop in the ocean.
“Jin, that’s just us against the world,” you said. “We sue three people, there’s three hundred more waiting. I just… I can’t do this anymore. I can’t stand the constant hate. The harassment. The death threats. It’s just too much.”
“I know, baby, I know. Believe me. I see your pain, I do,” Jin said. “But you told me I was worth it. You told me our relationship was worth it. What happened? Do you no longer love me?”
You fell to your knees, so you were his height, too.
“I love you with all of my heart, Jin,” you said. “But I’m not sure about what you feel.”
“What?” he gasped, suddenly offended. “You don’t think I love you? H-how can you say that? You’re the most important person in my life! I thought I proved that multiple times—”
“In this case, words speak louder than actions. I don’t doubt that you love me,” you explained. “But I’m not sure which place I take in your heart.”
“There are no places! You’re the only one!”
You turned your head away from him. “Jin—”
“No, Y/n, listen to me! I know that what I said last night, and the night before that sounded horrible. It wasn’t right for me to say those things. I don’t know what I was thinking,” he said. “But you can’t leave because of that. Let’s talk about it. Let’s work on this. I swear I take everything I said back. I’ll put every single person who looks at you the wrong way behind bars, just please, don’t leave me.”
You tried to stand up, but Jin grabbed your hands, not allowing you to walk away from him.
“I can’t, Jin,” you told him. “I need time. I need to think. To recover.”
“Think here. I’ll go. I’ll leave. I just need to know where you are. I need to know that you’re okay.”
You thought about it for a moment. You didn’t want to kick him out of your shared house but you couldn’t stay with him, either. And if the only way he was going to let you go is if he was the one who left, then you had to accept his terms.
“It’s not right, though,” you said. “I’m the one who wants to leave—”
“No, baby, I can’t let you leave,” he shook his head, desperately trying to show you how much he regretted his previous actions, while tears poured out of his eyes. “Stay here. Stay here as long as you want, okay? Take as much time as you need. I’ll… I’ll be someplace else. I won’t bother you, just… at the end of the day, please don’t end this. Don’t break my heart.”
Breaking his heart was never your intention. You loved him more than anything and the thought of hurting him, hurt you even more. But your mind was a mess and you needed to get yourself together.
So, you nodded, agreeing. “Okay.”
“Okay,” Jin nodded, too, standing up from the floor and helping you stand up as well. He wiped his tears away with the back of his hand and took a deep breath. “I’ll go. Please, just… stay here. And call me when you’re ready to talk to me, okay?”
You nodded slowly.
“Can you just promise me one thing, though?” Jin asked before leaving.
“What is it?”
“No matter what you decide to do,” he said, trying to stop the tears from coming back. “Don’t leave without saying goodbye.”

Mercury Outboards in NZ
The power rating of your Mercury Outboards NZ must match the load that it will be pushing. Consider the weight of the watercraft as well as the load it will bear when deciding on precisely how much power you need. The small portable outboards only make about and can quickly be hooked up to boats using clamps. The smallest portable outboards weigh only about including the gasoline tank. However, this small outboard still packs sufficient power to move a watercraft rather quickly. It has enough power to push a modest boat. To find out accurately what type of outboard motor to invest in, begin by figuring the weight of your motorboat and the load it will transport. So, if you are looking for marine engineering Auckland then contact Eastern Marine.
Eastern Marine knows that when shopping for boats or boat accessories some individuals will describe the experience as smooth and easy. As a matter of fact, it is often recognized as a hassle as individuals battle to find the parts they're searching for at the most cost-effective opportunity. When multiple parts are needed its regular to have an individual purchase one part here and another part from there in order to save the most cash. When you look to the online opportunity of mercury outboards NZ supplies, you ought to be seeking a resource that provides a variety of goods, detailed information on all goods and also an opportunity to get pricing directly from the selling parties. This online resource ought to be a one stop shop that eases the troubles of going from site to site or from store to store and simplifies the whole procedure. The boating experience is an opportunity that is enjoyed by many yet when you're unable to find what you're looking for at affordable prices, your pleasure is soon reduced.
When you try to buy ski boats, fishing boats, inflatable boats or aluminum boats on-line, you could benefit from an environment where you are in control and not bothered by pushy sales individuals.  The same could be said of trying to buy mercury outboards NZ such as outboards. Often experts in this environment come at you with all types of statistical information that they simply expect you to understand and asking to have it down is often a demeaning experience your own pace till you can discover all the features and benefits which appeal to your interests.
When it comes to recreational activities which several individuals enjoy, only some activities can compete with the popularity that exists with boating. Boating enthusiast's come in a broad range of characteristics from the individual that enjoys the power and speed which is associated with the ski boats to the individual that likes the quiet and tranquil opportunities of fishing boats. When you are set up with all the right mercury outboards NZ and equipment to pursue these interests it becomes rather easy to enjoy. Although, when you're lacking the equipment you require enjoying these hobbies; it could prove hard to enjoy. Rather than being out in the water you are traveling from shop to shop or spending hours on the phone searching for a resource which offers the very best goods at the most affordable prices.
If you find yourself in the market for ski boats or fishing boats there are often two avenues you could pursue. You could go to all the major suppliers of these vessels searching for a good investment opportunity or you can seek the mercury outboards NZ dealers so as to get a greater discount on what might only be a slightly used vessel. One way to eliminate a great deal of the hassle is to seek the opportunities relating to ski boats or fishing boats which can be found online. When you access the very best sites for these vessels you will discover a one stop shopping possibility which will help you in finding the best vessel for you and get quotes from competing companies, providing the best possibility for discounts.
If you already own a vessel and are discontented with its performance, there are a couple of alternatives available to you. While your vessel might still be in a high quality condition, your dissatisfaction might exist with the power coming out of your outboard motors. Instead of purchasing a new vessel you may be able to simply eliminate your dissatisfaction by investing in outboards or Mercury outboards to suit your need for additional power or performance. This choice can save a boat enthusiast a substantial amount of money since the exchanging of an old outboard motors to outboards or Mercury outboards is fairly a simple task.
Once again you could turn to the opportunity of the internet to find the best financial opportunity concerning this investment. As a matter of fact, when you are able to access a singular web site providing the person with information and investment opportunity on ski boats and fishing boats, and even quotes on outboards, Mercury outboards and other outboard motors you'll have unlocked your best way to save. Boating is a common passion for many and when you can invest in your own boat it opens a world of possibility.
One of the most popular propulsion system for marine engineering Auckland is the outboard motor time acts as the steering device. You can say that an outboard is a great combination of the engine, gearbox and the propeller every one perfectly rolled into one system. Whenever the motor is not running, the works as a rudder to maneuver the boat as one convenience of outboard motors over the inboard kinds is that they can effortlessly be uninstalled and stashed if necessary or for repairs. The neat ability of the outboard engine is actually that it can tilt up when running through shallow waters letting you to steer clear of rocks or the build up of seaweeds. When transporting a watercraft using a trailer, the outboard motor can easily be tilted up to avoid problems.

Get Free Phone Line and Make Internet Calls - VoIP Solution in Canada
VOIP is Voice over IP or Voice over Internet Protocol - using IP networks like the Internet to route phone calls vs using a regular land-line also known as POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).
Tumblr media
This setup can be totally free by using a "soft phone" on your PC or Mac and with a small initial investment it is possible to use a regular phone and still have a free VOIP phone line in Canada - or a Canadian phone number somewhere else in the world.  Business Phone Solutions for Canadian Businesses
Get a real phone number
No monthly phone bill
Call many cities in Canada free
This Instructable will cover getting a phone number, setting it up as a "soft phone" on your PC or Mac
But it gets better - with the correct VoIP/ATA device and configuration we can bridge VoIP calls over to POTS lines and vice-versa. This device in Auckland has a Vancouver number on it and is also connected to the POTS system and therefore has an Auckland phone number associated with it. From my device in Vancouver I can call the device in Auckland over the Internet, then call out on the Auckland land-line - so I can get Auckland dial-tone from Vancouver, for free! In Auckland they can pick up the phone and dial almost anywhere in Canada for free. There is also an app for both iPhone's and Android phones that allow you to call an Obihai device and use it to call out - for example my brother in New Zealand installs it on his iPhone and I add him to my trusted network. When he connects his iPhone to the Internet via WiFi he can call my Obihai device and use it to call me on my cell phone
Step 1: Pro's and Con's
As the saying goes there is no such thing as a free lunch. There are pro's and con's associated with using VoIP  Remote Work Services in Canada
Pro's:
Real phone number from 1 of 4 provinces
Can use a "soft phone" or regular phone
Call most Canadian cities for free
Bridge between VoIP and POTS
Take your phone number with you when you travel
Con's:
No 911 service or service not as reliable as POTS
Small initial cost outlay for VoIP device and "config file" now called a "VoIP Unlock Key"
It can be technical to setup
Needs Internet
If Internet drops so does the phone.
Step 2: Sign Up for a Phone Number.
Note: a "soft phone" is a software application you install onto a PC to give you phone calls via the PC microphone and sound card.
I use a service called VoIP Solution in Canada (Call Now -1-289-856-9950)
(Again I do not work for them or get any compensation financial or otherwise from them).
To setup an account with them you will need to provide your name, address (including postal code, street address, province etc), DOB, gender, email address, a valid phone number like your cellular number or existing land line number and agree to their terms and conditions (a lot of info on 911, 1-900, 411 etc etc). If you aren't happy giving this information out then don't bother registering! If you are OK with this then lets proceed.
Register on the site.
Initially you will need to provide an email address and a valid phone number (like your cellular number).
You will get a confirmation email needed to activate your account.
Once activated login to the site and click on the "register" button - here you will have to provide the info listed above.
Continue - you will need to agree to their terms and conditions.
Once you agree to the terms and conditions the next step they require is to confirm your existing phone number (this is to probably confirm you are Canadian but I am not 100% sure). They will call the number you provided and give you a 3 digit confirmation code you need to enter into a box and confirm.
Almost there.....
Now you get to pick the area code and number. The Provinces you can get a number from are: BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Once you pick a province you get a choice of cities. You can pick a number from any of the listed provinces/cities. If for example you are in Vancouver and have family in Toronto you can pick a Toronto number and family in Toronto will be able to call you for free. If you don't like the first number picked for you you can get a couple more tries.
Once you have got a phone number you can download either a Windows or Mac version of the software.
Install the software, launch it and login with the same login/password you used to register on the website.
Congratulations you have a free working phone number - no credit card needed.
To make long distance calls to places out of their free calling zone you can buy credits from your account on the Business Phone Service in Canada website.
Step 3: Using an ATA/VoIP Device
I used this setup for a couple of months but wanted to use a regular cordless phone so I didn't have to sit at my PC to make or receive calls. To do this I purchased an ATA/VoIP device and also a "config file" from http://wildxcanada.ca/ The VoIP Unlock Key is a login & password for their SIP system along with information on what servers etc. to use.
Where can you get more information about Free VoIP Solution? If you are based in in the country and want to make calls to across Canada or around the world then there are many free call providers. Contact Us- 1-289-856-9950 and Visit- http://wildxcanada.ca/businessphoneserviceincanada/

#1My topic is about solo living. I have researched statisctics of solo living and see how and had interviwe to people who live alone.
#2The reason i choose this topic is that i have many friends who live alone in Auckland and Korea and i often listen their solo living life that it is really lonely and hard. I aso have experiences to live alone in Korea but  but there were more inconveniences thing than living with my family.
In addition, somone i knew who was around 90 years old and lived alone in Auckland.  my dad used to help his house work sometimes like biweekly but oneday we couldnt contact with him for few days so went to his house and his house was unlock and all windows were opend. My dad felt something wrong there so went to inside then we found hi m dead. He looked like hes daed few days ago. I was very shocked and really sad because he was dead alone and there were nobody to help him and couldnt contact to someone. This was biggest reason i thought about solo living.
#3Also as you seen, solo livings are projected to be the fastest growing household type, increasing from 393,000 in 2013 to 599,000 in 2038. they will account for 27 percent of all solo living in 2038, up from 24 percent in 2013.
#3Firstly i had interview to 6 people who live alone in Auckland and Korea. Most of interviewee were aged 20-50 and some of them have international student visa or working holiday visa holder. They all have different situation, life style, age, living envrionment and gender so i could get various informations from them.
From the interview i found there are common issues.
They can not have a proper meal
they cost a lot of money to buy food to cook at home - Because they can not buy food for one person in market. for example they only need half size of vegetables or meat but they have to buy whole thing and they can not eat all.
So they often eat outside
Irregular eating patterTns
There are nobody to help when they are sick
They spend most of time on phone Tv or game
They are afraide of sick
#4 Secondly i had a interview with my grandmother. She is 88 years old and lives alone in Korea.
She cooks everyday but does not eat proper meal - Because only she eats alone and doesnt want to cook as she has no energy
Be that as it may, she deos not eat outside - salty, spicy, chewy, too hot
She often goes to hospital - bus or taxi
Irregular eating patterns
When she is sick she calls to relative or go to hospital alone
Feels lonely and isolated
Health problems
their eyes getting bad
Eat medicine everyday - Forgot sometimes
#5  I found this statistic in Newzealand and it shows thatOverall, the chances of living alone increse as both men and women grow older. As this statictics, 6 percent of men aged 25-34 were living alone in 2013. By age 55.64, this had doubled to 14 percent, and then rose to 25 percent at age 75 more.
#6 Of those who lived alone in 2013, nearly half (44 percent) were aged 65 or older, including 25 percent who were 75 or over. And only 10 percent of people who lived alone were under 35 years, including 3 percent who were aged 15–24 In 2013, the median age of people living alone was 62 years and the median age of solo living has chaged little since 1986.Also In the United States, nearly 30% of the 46 million
The staticstics show there are many solo living elderly people and it is increasing.
#7 So based on my all research and interview, i think biggest problem is health issue so i decided to create something relates health.Target market is of course people who live alone and aged 20-75 or more. However the problem is there are huge generation gap between young people and old people especially technology. Young people are used to use smart phone but elderlys are not. I only did one interview for old people so need to have few more elderly interview.. but its little bit late.
These are 3 Insights. I focused on health issues.
1. Solo living population is increasing (The likelihood of living alone increases with ages)
2. Regardless of ages, People who live alone do not prepare full, balanced meal. Thus, undernutrition becomes a concern.
3. There is nobody to help when they sick or in bad situations.
How might we..?
Creating something to help people who live alone maintain social connections and physical fitness. Also help to have proper meals.

Cybercrime a $600 billion problem
From hospitals, business, and government no target is too big for today’s sophisticated cyber criminals, not even an election - and it’s costing US$445 billion (NZ$647b) per year globally.
Hospitals became a major target this year raising serious concerns over patient data and privacy along with the threat of mass murder. Locally, Whanganui District Health Board’s system became infected with a ransomware called “locky”. They claim to have resolved the issue without losing data, which makes them very lucky.
In November three hospitals in England connected by an NHS Trust were forced to cancel thousands of operations after a cyberattack crippled their information technology (IT) infrastructure.
A Washington, D.C-area hospital chain was targeted in May shutting down all IT systems in ten hospitals in the D.C/Baltimore. The hospitals were forced to revert to paper records and patients were reportedly turned away from affected hospitals.
A month earlier, a California hospital paid $17,000 to hackers in order to have ransomware removed so they could regain access to electronic health records.
“Ransomware has continued to cause major headaches, especially for consumers and small businesses. Unfortunately this is likely to continue as I suspect criminals continue to make fairly good financial returns from extortion such as this,” said Barry Brailey, chair of the New Zealand Internet Task Force.
“The most common Ransomware we have seen basically encrypts and locks all content on a persons computer and requires a payment to be unlocked or decrypted. It’s a good reminder to have decent off site back ups of any important data,” Brailey said.
Dr Hossein Sarrafzadeh, director of the Centre of Computational Intelligence for Cyber Security at Unitec Auckland said ransomware affected tens of thousands of people in 2016 and is estimated to have profited the criminals to the tune of US$1 billion.
“The network of criminals trading and collaborating on the Dark Web will continue to grow [in 2017],” Sarrafzadeh said.
The majority of cyber attacks in New Zealand still go unreported, though figures released by New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) this year showed that attacks have more than doubled since 2011.
According to Netsafe, only around 4 per cent of all attacks in New Zealand are reported. The estimated cost to Kiwis is somewhere between $250-400 million.
Chief financial officers have been targeted this year, with one woman sending $100,000 offshore at the request of what she thought was her chief executive.
The New Zealand Fire Service got scammed out of $52,000, once again believing their boss was asking for the money.
“Business email compromise, fake invoices and CEO/CFO style phising have been big this year,” Brailey said.
“The fraudsters mislead companies into making large payments to certain (often overseas) bank accounts or companies. This has been impacting businesses of all sizes and the sums of money involved, even from NZ companies, suggest this criminal activity is unlikely to stop, although the attacks and tricks used may continue to evolve.”
And what have we learned this year? That hacking is easy. Techradar called 2016 “the year hacking went mainstream.”
“Criminals do not need to create their own tools,” said Sarrafzadeh. “They can simply hire them to carry out malicious attacks on specific targets.”
Firewalls and anti-virus don’t protect business from the biggest threat of all; careless and uneducated staff. Every business in New Zealand is vulnerable to attacks if they have staff who will are not rigorous about email attachments and verification of identity.
“Good accounting practices with checks and controls around payments to new suppliers, unusual payments, or bank account changes for existing suppliers help detect and prevent this fraud,” said Brailey.
As businesses become more connected, the risks of cyber attacks increase - making the education of employees vital.
“An organisation is only as strong as its weakest link. If one employee clicks on a link in an email or a link in a website that contains malware, then the whole organisation is at risk,” Sarrafzadeh said.
Think you’re immune? Think again. John Podesta, a former White House chief of staff and chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 US presidential campaign was victim to a phising campaign which saw a massive data breach and thousands of highly confidential emails released to the public. The hack, which occurred in the last month of the election, was hugely damaging to Clinton’s campaign.
While ransomware was the dominant trend, 2016 also saw the always trolling DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks hitting major companies such as Sony, Twitter, and Facebook. Even more frightening was the proliferation of the “Mirai” Botnet which turned computers into remotely controlled “bots” which could be employed for massive DDoS attacks co-ordinated on single targets. Another scary feature includes the ability for criminals to use the Botnet to spy on victims through their computer, phone, or even baby monitor.
“DDoS and the Mirai Botnet have ‘rounded out the year’”, said Brailey. “If your website is important to you, perhaps you conduct most or all of your business through it; you should talk to your IT staff or providers about DDoS mitigations”.
The good news? According to NZITF, general awareness of security issues has risen and will continue to rise in 2017. Another silver lining is the sudden shortage of cyber security skills which will open a range of new jobs to young graduates with IT and coding skills.
