Meraviglia F.A.Q.
Tumblr media
Here, we are going to lay out some general facts about the zine. We hope you will reach out to us if you have further questions. Our askbox (anon enabled) is open.
Tumblr media
♥ What is the nature of this anthology?
In essence, this anthology will be an illustrated fantasy book where writers and artists collaborate to create the chapters of a fully-fledged story. While we take inspiration from the original Alice in Wonderland’s aesthetics and plot, our goal is to create our own unique narratives and reimaginations.
We are looking for writers, artists, and merch artists to join us in this endeavor.
For more, you can read our zine introductory post here.
♦ Is this anthology physical or digital?
The anthology is going to be available in both physical and digital format. Merch will be available with the physical copies.
♣ Is this project for profit or charity?
A bit of both. Based on the responses we collected in our interest check, we decided that it’s best for each contributor to decide individually what they would like to do with their earnings.
All profits will be split equally amongst all contributors.
♠ Who are the mods?
@abri-chan (ideator & host)
@plavigmaz (co-host & art mod)
@pinkuoir (graphics mod)
@yumigahamakure (graphics mod)
@teamnijimura (finance mod)
You can see our mod introductions here.
♥ Who is Alice?
Alice is the main character and the reader’s guide through MeravigliaLand; in a way, they’re an insert through which the reader can experience the unfolding events. They have no specific gender or identity as these aspects of their character are ever-shifting. It is a wonderful, strange world after all where anything and everything is possible!
Alice means ‘stranger-like’ in MeravigliaLand, and that is the nickname the inhabitants of this world have christened them with.

♦ [Writer’s Application] What do you mean by world-building?
The requirement for strong world-building skills means that we are looking for samples of plot-driven fics and/or AUs.
First, let us provide an example of what IS NOT world-building, at least with regards to what we are looking for in this zine. Picture, for instance, two characters getting a divorce. The entirety of the story is spent inside the characters’ heads examining how terrible and miserable they feel. In general, anything with little to no external events does not readily lend itself to world-building.
Now, an example of what world-building IS. Science-fiction and fantasy are loaded with it: tech gadgets, a scientific phenomenon to explore, fantastical worlds, systems of magical powers; you get the drift. But do not be deceived; world-building can be much simpler than that. Take, for example, a story where the main character goes about a fictional town pursuing an objective. They navigate their environment, and in doing so, take their readers along with them. They face obstacles as they progress from point A to point B to point C, and they must use all the knowledge and resources available to them to overcome these obstacles and achieve their goal. Every interaction with other characters, external events, and even their physical surroundings will immerse the reader further into the main character’s world. This is what we are looking for in terms of world-building.
♣ [Artist’s Application] Why is it required to provide samples that have backgrounds?
It is important for us to see that you are capable of creating a full art piece that includes a background. While the characters are important to the story, the world that they inhabit is equally essential as it is rich with world-building. You will work with your assigned writer to help tell your artistic tale!
Did you know? The Land of Meraviglia is ever-changing!
It is important you know how to incorporate that variety into the two artworks you'll be creating based on your paired writer's story. Your art should be telling a story too!
A sample that illustrates what we ARE looking for is having the characters interact with the world they live in, by making a composition that tells a story. An example would be as follows: two characters have entered a house, as indicated by the wide-open door showing a glimpse of a blue forest from which they just came. They are now in an antique anteroom. Character A, with their back turned, is leaning into a dresser, hastily rummaging and throwing random objects onto the floor, as if searching for something. Character B is cautiously standing next to character A but curiously looking over the objects A has scattered onto the floor in front of us. On impact, the objects seem to shapeshift into different forms. Around them, there are pictures above the dresser that show photos of A alongside other people, indicating that the house they have entered is indeed A's. The composition should have the characters and background balanced so they both work together as a whole unit. This way it helps to illustrate a story!
A sample of what we ARE NOT looking for is having characters drawn on a background that serves only to passively accompany the characters. An example of that would be as follows: a character standing in a contrapposto with one hand on their hip and a stoic expression with the drawing’s focus being primarily to show off the character's design. Other sorts of backgrounds we ARE NOT looking for include the following: backgrounds with a single solid color or gradient, simple backgrounds featuring generic cityscapes or landscapes, geometric shapes or similar patterns that indicate the character's place in the world but not their interaction with it. The focus in the examples given above is more on showcasing the character itself than on the story being told by the art piece. We are looking for the latter.
Another sample of what we ARE NOT looking for is casting too much focus on the background instead, or rather, having the majority of the piece show off a landscape, cityscape, etc. In this case, the characters get lost in the environment, and it becomes unclear what story the art piece is telling.
Knowing the basics of art fundamentals is also appreciated, but do not worry, as we'll be providing feedback for your illustrations during check-ins to help correct any errors we may come across.
