Tell me your thoughts on the Marble Nest!!!
Oh you mean IPL's long awaited sequel to Knock-Knock? 🕯⚰️
In all seriousness though, I'll admit I can't go into as much depth as other fans due to my inability to play the game for the longest time (a tragedy I have now overcome w/ my new gaming pc), but from the walkthroughs of it I'd watch I always found myself so engrossed with the story!
Pathologic already does a lot to challenge me as someone with horrible thanatophobia, but the Marble Nest in particular serves as such a brutal, yet also surprisingly compassionate meditation on the nature of death and dying.
All of the events in the game feel like reflections of the thought process one goes through when they know they're dying: fierce denial at being told the news (the game's opening), trying to carry on and fix the problem (the time loop), reflections on one's religious beliefs or lack of thereof (that one conversation near the cathedral where you can choose if Daniil believes in God or not), past regrets resurfacing (the panacea/the conversation about Eva Yan), constant dread at knowing what's going to happen to you (the executor/death conversations), and finally being immobilized by the pain of it all and having to choose whether to go peacefully or keep on fighting (being locked in the house at the end/ the ending choices).
But what makes it all so compelling is how no matter which ending you choose for Daniil, the game doesn't label it as a "good" or "bad" choice. Death may be an inevitable part of life, but everyone has the right to view it differently, and this game truly respects that. It is yet another example of how video game narratives can be extremely fulfilling in a way that is unique to its medium; a book or film would never be able to capture the emotions you feel making the choice to repeat the loop, choose death, or find the "heart" to make a different choice all together ;-)
(Well, the game DOES judge you for picking the 1st ending where you choose to die at the very start, but that's only the game being disappointed that you didn't even try to play it.)
It's not the deepest analysis of TMN's narrative, I'll admit. Honestly at this point so many people, even my own mutuals, have said so much about the game that I honestly feel like I don't have much left to add to the conversation other than all the genuine Knock-Knock connections this game has that some Patho fans don't know of (I've talked about them before, but I didn't want to derail my specific thoughts on TMN). Anyway, these are my thoughts on how the game's story affected me personally 💀🖤

steve lets out an awkward little laugh as he nearly runs into the other, trying to ignore the pounding in his chest. the tension in the air. "uh, hey." he greets with a little wave, a slightly forced smile. looking at them, all he can think about is that kiss. and all he wants to do is take them somewhere and do it over and over again. but he can't. not when they're happily and publicly taken. "how was your night?"
