#2059 - Pleurotus australis - Southern Oyster Mushroom
Tumblr media
The spotty upper surface is not the natural state - it's severely moulded. The underside was even worse.
Tumblr media
In fact, most of the mushrooms we saw on the island over the weekend were hopelessly infected. The heavy rain really wasn't helpful.
A large and handsome gilled mushroom, often found growing from the trunks of trees in Australia and New Zealand where it feeds on the dead or dying heartwood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Often infested with the larvae of sunflies (Tapeigaster sp.) whose adult males will have punch-ups over prime fungal real estate.

(Agaricus bisporus fam. Agaricaceae)
Tumblr media
(Pleurotus ostreatus fam. Pleurotaceae)
Tumblr media
(Boletus edulis fam. Boletaceae)
Tumblr media
(Lentinula edodes fam. Marasmiaceae)
Tumblr media

Pleurotus ostreatus, Basidiomycota
As stated before, I am not particularly familiar with the regnum fungi, but it’s about time I learn more, so, if I’ve done my homework correctly, in the photos above you can see a nice cluster of Grey Oyster mushroom, which is edible and present throughout the year in the UK.
Although these are some of the most common mushrooms you could find and I was pretty confident with my ID, I still didn’t want to try my luck and collect them for dinner, in case I woke up the following morning intoxicated and with a failing liver...better safe than sorry! If anybody could confirm I was right, then I might feel brave enough to try them next time I see some!
