Mary Martin

British visual artist Mary Martin was born on November 16 in 1907. Her work is characterised by a repetition of shapes, according to mathematical sequences, respect for the law of proportions and sets of permutations, as well as a highly refined sense of the superposition of materials – natural and painted wood, cardboard and plexiglas, stainless steel and cement – which include her quite unique installations of plexiglas on wood. 

Her work can also be assessed within the context of the post-war British constructionist movement. Along with her husband Kenneth Martin and Victor Pasmore, she was one of the influential early practitioners of constructionism, which developed the ideas of the interwar constructivist movement by emphasising geometric forms, deploying mathematical patterns, and using mass-produced materials.

During the early 1950s Martin began to experiment with three main themes: spiral movement, climbing forms, and expanding forms. Her taste for industrial materials and architecture, and her training as a designer made her one of the few female sculptors to receive public commissions, including Wall Screen at the Musgrave Park Hospital (Belfast, 1957) and Wall Construction (1969) at the University of Stirling, Scotland. 

Convinced that artists should “have an understanding of, and a capacity to enter into, architecture, without destroying it, or dominating it, or distracting from it; an ability to crystallise it in an art which is a simple statement on the personal scale so that the work becomes a comprehensible symbol of the building itself, a part of the architecture but not architecture”, she took part in large constructed art exhibitions, including Konkrete Kunst, (Zurich, 1960) and Experiment in Constructie(Amsterdam, 1962).

Aujourd'hui j'ai réalisé mes pions en plexiglas.

Le résultat est plutôt pas mal. Quelques améliorations sont possibles. Notamment par le fait que de base, les formes géométriques et les barres devaient s'emboîter mais il y a un peu trop de jeu donc je les ai gluées. Mais j'ai demandé à plusieurs personnes de les tester. SI je ne précisais pas pour la colle, les gens ne s'en rendaient pas compte donc c'est valable pour un jury. Cela dit, une personne m'a dit qu'elle aurait aimée avoir 1cm de plus sur la barre. Je me pose aussi la question de la taille des pions. peut-être sont ils un peu petits. En même temps je les trouve plutôt viables par rapport à la taille de la carte.

En revanche, pour les cartes Lieu de Travail/ Infrastructures j'ai 3 options.

La première c'est celle de plusieurs carrés, qui ont chacun des petits trous allant de 1 à 4.

La deuxième c'est celle de plusieurs formes pleines passant du carré, au triangle et aux étoiles 4 et 5 branches.

La troisième c'est de juste mettre des pions carrés pour tout le monde.

Sur le papier, je préférais la première option que je trouvais plus élégante. Représenter l'ensemble des Lieu de Travail ne peut pas être figuratif, mais de simples carrés avec des encoches de différentiations me semblaient bien. Mais dans la réalité, si on les distingue de près, de loin sur le plateau elles le sont moins. Il faut donc se pencher pour vérifier.

La deuxième option est au finale plus visible sur la table que la première. Néanmoins, les diverses formes ne font pas vraiment sens avec le lore. Les étoiles sont connotées et ne sont pas vraiment semblables à un Lieu de Travail, donc je trouve qu'elles font un peu tâches bien que la couleur les fonde bien dans le décor.

La troisième option me vient plus ou moins d'une personne qui m'a simplement dit que pour elle, les pions pouvaient tous les mêmes puisque si les gens les placent c'est qu'iels font un minimum attention au jeu. Je préfèrerais des formes différentes mais si les deux précédentes ne convenaient pas à cause de leurs défauts cela pourrait être le compromis.

Je prend en compte ces opinions et si j'ai le temps, j'essayerais de les refaire une fois. Néanmoins j'ai d'autres priorités d'ici le jury donc je laisse ça de côté pour l'instant et j'essaye de finir tous mes assets pour fin de semaine pro.
